WH communications director: Fox News operates as ‘a wing of the Republican Party.’

This morning on CNN’s Reliable Sources, White House communications director Anita Dunn defended her recent comment to Time magazine that Fox News is “opinion journalism masquerading as news.” Noting the inordinate amount of attention Fox devotes to stirring fake controversies like Bill Ayers and ACORN, Dunn explained:

The reality of it is that Fox News often operates as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party. And it’s not ideological. I mean, obviously there are many commentators who are conservative, liberal, centrist, and everybody understands that. What I think is fair to say about Fox is — and certainly the way we view it — is that it really is more of a wing of the Republican Party. [...]

They’re widely viewed as, you know, a part of the Republican Party — take their talking points, put them on the air, take their opposition research, put them on the air, and that’s fine. But let’s not pretend they’re a news network they way CNN is.

Watch it:

Last month, President Obama appeared on five Sunday morning talk shows, including Univision’s Al Punto. He rejected Fox, however. Dunn revealed this morning that Obama did not appear on Fox because of its reflexive, partisan opposition to Obama. Obama will go on Fox in the future, Dunn said, but when he goes on, “he’s going on to debate the opposition.”

I am happy to see the Faux Noise actions are being called out but I hope the attention they are now getting does not work to their advantage. Those that are glued to Faux Noise will not understand what Dunn is saying. The Faux Noise machine will whip up more froth for the faithful dolts to whine about. The right is very good at pushing falsehoods and framing those that oppose them as traitors. They are adept at putting out the message and not letting the facts get in their way.

  5. Xisithrus says:

Mostly they operate as a wing of K Street [lobbyists] so its natural they appear, and do, work for the gNOpers and use government, elected politicks, to bilk the salus populi of its tax dollars.

Its a canard they are for tax cuts. Its a canard they are about smaller gogvernment, its a canard they care about life, its a canard they care about anything other than paper IOUs.

  11. pags2 says:

Dunn did not need to state the obvious. When Fox attacked Clinton nonstop and did not criticize Bush, then it should have been very clear to even the average person. It is good that Fox is being shut out of the White House press. If Murdoch and Ailes want to be a part of the WH press corps then they know what they need to do. But they won’t.

No, it isn’t. It’s Flatulent Noise. It’s all well and good to call it Faux but it certainly isn’t News, and apart from screeching sensationalism and the strong ‘the sky is falling’ sort of opinion, it has the dull thump of a rather too solid fart and the stale smell of Rupert Murdock’s bum.

  17. Marie says:

We here all know that Fox News is faux news — but not everyone sees it that way; this was pretty important today — an interview with Dunn on CNN, a news channel which is still viewed by the more independent, moderate citizen as being legitimate.
She took full advantage of the opportunity.

It’s time to take the obvious truth of Fox’s partisan nature to the obvious conclusion – their activies are campaign activities that should be subject to campaign spending laws. Advertising on FOX is an unregulated campaign contribution. It is NOT a valid business expense; it should not reduce a company’s tax liability.

    Dear Cesspool Troll,

I left your first English-for-idiots lesson on another one of the threads on the TPsite. Glad to hear you’re providing reading material along with a bad smell for your fellow motorists.

The word is PLAIN, Cess, not PLANE. A plane is a tool used in woodworking to produce a flat surface (usually – there are spokeshave planes and others for speciality curve forms); also, there is a mathematical object which is referred to as a plane (I’d tell you a lot more but you’d find it tedious); and plane is also an acceptable contractive form for airplane. The word plain, however, as an adjective, which is how you used it, means unadorned or simple or undecorated; in ordinary guy talk, straight up. Plain, when used as a noun, shares it’s meaning with the mathematical plane, in that it refers to a (more-or-less) level geographic feature, usually devoid of trees (it ain’t a forest – yo) etc etc.

The word is spelled ALTERNATE, not alturnate.

Good on you, cess, you keep deciding. You’re the deciderer, right? What is it you decide? Whether you agree or not? Whether you understand or not? Whether they’re lying or not? Why do you think they want anything but to have you watch the next commercial? What makes you think they’re telling it straight? Wassup? Dood?

  68. belaccifer lacca says:

is ‘just trying to sell books’ and be popular…

    http://crooksandliars.com/2008/07/25/mcclellan-white-house-gave-fox-commentators-talking-points

He will then probably claim that FOX is #1 in the ratings and this PROVES that they are AWEXOME…

He will then ignore the contradiction presented by arguing that one must diss Fox to ‘Sell Books’ and that Fox represents the majority of American’s views at the same time… Jeebuz

    Snarry the Dyspeptic–

You always seem to imply that liberals don’t work and contribute to this society because Fuchs Noose told you to think that way. Unless you homeschool your kids, if you and I live in the same city/town, I was probably one of their teachers, and most likely they passed every state-mandated test they took. I did it while being a liberal and an African American, as I did with the children of many Fuchs Noose freakazoids, and the state gave me a teaching certificate because I passed all the required tests the first time I sat for them. I also completed undergraduate school in 3 years instead of 4 and, paid out-of-pocket by the quarter/semester to finance both of the advanced degrees I have in education, in different areas also.

And before you get started on your affirmative action rant, I was accepted to all colleges on the basis of grades and test scores, and paid the costs myself. None of the colleges I attended were historic black colleges. I was in the minority population at each institution. I have a kid who is also highly-educated and employed, with no out-of-wedlock offspring

This is what scares Fuchs Noose and its freakazoids about President Obama and people like myself. We defy the stereotypes that this society has institutionalized. While you and Fuchs Noose are busy shouting and acting out to attract attention, we are staying the course, living our lives, and being successful in spite of you, and there is nothing you, Fuchs Noose, or anyone else can do to stop it without resorting to violence, which is your usual “solution” to problems. Reminds me of the Nazi “solutions” to their “supposed” problems, but wait, it’s libruls who are Nazis.

This very belief shows what a hatchet job Fuchs has done on the minds of it’s viewers, just like combining Nazi and czars, which has no historical relevance.

  148. DoctorD says:

Isn’t there a First Amendment problem here?

  149. pbeeg says:

The two problems with the Right right now are 1) They’ve been nothing but movement conservatives at least since 1994 and arguably since 1980, and 2) their ideological and policy points have been shown to be disasters.

The Republicans have always been Party before Country, but they’re now Party before Ideology. They trumpet their free-market libertarianism around (since it’s the closest thing to a philosophy they’ve got), but they’ll avoid Ron Paul like he’s got scabies. They’ll despise John McCain, but when the decks are ordered clear for his run(remember how mysteriously Mittens dropped out?) was there any fragmentation? Diid Ann Coulter make good on her threat? Nooooo.

It’s possible for conservatives to be isolationists as much as being imperialists. It’s possible for them to be fiscal conservatives as well as spendthrifts. It’s possible for them to be atheists (Randists) as well as Christians, it’s possible for them to be jealous guardians of individual liberty as well as exponents of a security state. But these days they’re all together on those positions–and completely dependent on their political leadership.

Under Bush, the party line was ‘Reagan proved deficits don’t matter.’ Noe it’s ‘America is broke!” Under Bush, it as the Unitary Presidency and warrantless wiretapping. Now it’s “Obama is taking too much power to himself!” And in best whiplash we’ve seen, they’ve rejoiced over the low opinion he world has over egotistical Obama in not getting the Olympics–and mere seconds later growled over the high opinion they have by giving him the Nobel Prize. 180 degrees and does this bother them? Nooooo…

This whole ‘Obama theMessiah” thing is classic projection. Comparisons of GWB to Winston Churchill were fine, and righty bloggers calling him an underappreciated genius? sure. But when Obama takes a position we criticize not only the position but his style.

Our allegiance is to ideals and principles. And if Barack Obama betrays them, we’ll dump him without a qualm. Many already have.

But Righties? They’ll still vote for David Vitter.

But the bigger problem is that if they try to rise to their principals, they screwed them up so bad they broke the instruments. They screwed up unilateralism so badly they all but broke the military and made us worse than a pariah–they were well on their way to making us a joke and a has been. And their deregulated free-market economy screwed the country up so badly they destroyed the financial industry and the automotive industry.

And now, of course, they’re screaming at Obama’s efforts to fix it.

The Republicans have shown that they’ll cheer any dimwit, from W to Sarah to Addison Chase Wilson to Orly Taitz-that they’l change their line on a dime–and that they think that being the anti-Obama party is going to get them somewhere instead of standing for something.

It’s just so obvious and pathetic.

So they split the reasoned viewers between them. FOX is the only destination for those who prefer to be lied to and want PROPAGANDA instead of information. As for your comment about MSNBC, I think the whole business has been much oversimplified. Flatulent Noise Channel is a branch of Noise Corporation and Rupert “Murder” Murdock, who holds US citizenship but is beholden to no one, gives them their marching orders, which apparently includes having Roger Ailes do little but spew Republipimp talking points. I think Rupert would also like to produce and own the next President; wouldn’t be the first time someone from the media tried that one. Can I cite a source for that? Well, no, it’s suppostion, but given that Hearst damn near single handedly started a war, it isn’t very far fetched to think a “press lord” might try to have a President of his choosing elected, and Rupert is exactly the kind of person who might see an opportunity in doing that.

OTOH, MSNBC doesn’t seem to put up all that many Democratic Party talking points. Then again, MSNBC is just a small part of NBC Universal, which in turn is part of GE. They have their own interests, but I think it’s probably safe to say that MSNBC wouldn’t be going in the direction it is if GE management and their analytical team didn’t think there was a fair audience share there.

Some years ago, I politely tried to tell the Tracy (now Tracy 5) troll that people might pay more attention to his posts if he paid a bit more attention to his spelling. He responded, “Your grammer sucks.” Well, maybe my grammer(SIC) does suck but not my grammar.
More recently the Crotalus2 troll referred to “Dan Issa” who might make President Obama sweat. After I asked him/her if he/she meant “Darrell Issa the car thief,” he curtly responded that he meant “Dan Issa, the ranking senior member on the Congressional Oversight Committee” and accused me of being an ignorant 12-year old. However, the Congressman’s name, in fact, is Darrell Issa, and he does have a past involvement in car theft.
Perhaps most hypocritical of all was the “amused by hypocrites” troll who implied to me that the adverb “hypocritically” does not exist in any English dictionaries, but it actually does.

What would you prefer we call them, SG? The people who are called ‘trolls’ deserve to be collected under some sort of moniker, some name, and troll is fitting. Some of them do get called rather less polite terms. They are grown-ups, just as we are, and they can defend themselves; for the most part, they don’t defend themselves well, but that’s because they come onto the site with a box of insults, thinking they’re gonna open a can of righty whoopbutt, knock over all the wimp pussy libs and progressives, and then find out they’ve opened a hornet’s nest of invective.

We are not obliged to be polite to people who come onto the site with no sense of decency or consideration. People who come onto the site with a negative opinion disguised as an assertion of fact will be disabused of the opinion, and if they persist in being nasty about it, that will be reflected in what they receive.

I’d prefer to call them trogs or retro, but trolls it is.

Well, lets see what the social psychologists and political scientists have to say about the matter, shall we?

“It appears that conservatism has pathological dimensions manifested in violence and distorted psycho-sexual development” (Boshier, R. (1983). Education inside: Motives for participation in prison education programmes. Vancouver: British Columbia University).

This is supported by a study conducted by Walker, Rowe, and Quincey (Authoritarianism and sexual aggression. Journal of Personality & Social Psychology, 65(5), 1036-1045) in which there was a direct correlation between authoritarianism and sexually aggressive behavior.

An investigation done by Muehlenhard (Misinterpreted dating behaviors and the risk of date rape. Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, 6(1), 2-37) revealed that rape justification and aggression toward subordinate individuals was much higher in traditional (conservative personality) than non-traditional personalities”

“Conservatism is not the doctrine of the intellectual elite or of the more intelligent segments of the population, but the reverse. By every measure available to us, conservative beliefs are found most frequently among the uninformed, the poorly educated, and the less intelligent” (McClosky, Conservatism and personality. American Political Science Review, 52, 27-45)

Oh, dear! Not looking very good so far, is it? Perhaps Altemeyer, a man who has been studying conservative/authoritarian behaviour for decades has to say on the matter. Surely he’ll straighten out this terrible blasphemy.

“The studies explain so much about these people. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show the Religious Right has more than its fair share of hypocrites, from top to bottom; but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other? Yes, their leaders can give the flimsiest of excuses and even outright lies about things they’ve done wrong, but why do the rank-and-file believe them? What happens when authoritarian followers find the authoritarian leaders they crave and start marching together?”
Dr. Robert Altemeyer – The Authoritarians
    http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

Hmm. Well what about the US’s own social scientists, now working for the DHS counter-terrorism section?

“A meta-analysis (88 samples, 12 countries, 22,818 cases) confirms that several psychological variables predict political conservatism: death anxiety (weighted mean r .50); system instability (.47); dogmatism–intolerance of ambiguity (.34); openness to experience (–.32); uncertainty tolerance (–.27); needs for order, structure, and closure (.26); integrative complexity (–.20); fear of threat and loss (.18); and self-esteem (–.09). The core ideology of conservatism stresses resistance to change and justification of inequality and is motivated by needs that vary situationally and dispositionally to manage uncertainty and threat.”
    http://faculty.virginia.edu/haidtlab/jost.glaser.political-conservatism-as-motivated-social-cog.pdf

Seems pretty clear to me that the much-vaunted “liberal media” could be much harder on conservatism than they presently are….that is if in fact it ever really existed. However, the above-linked factual data strongly suggesting that this too was merely yet another conservative myth thrown up as a means of protecting themselves from the truth of what miserable little creatures they truly are.

SG. Did Beck happen to include these statistics with his usual set of lies…lies you’ve been repeatedly warned about but continue to believe?

Each year prostate cancer caused 245 deaths per 100,000 population for men over 65 in the US 2000 (SEER Cancer Statistics Review, 1975-2000, NIDDK)
(Compare that to the 10 Beck shoveled you. Now doesn’t that figure seem somewhat more liklly than the glaring and blatantly low-balled number you re-posted here?)

Prostate cancer death rates for various sub-populations in the USA:

African American men have the highest rate in the world (CBCF Health Organisation, 2004)

Kills 1 in 23 African American men in America CBCF Health Organisation, 2004)

12.9 per 100,000 Asian/Pacific Islander people died from prostate cancer in USA 2001 (NCHS, 2003)

19.0 per 100,000 American Indian or Alaska Native people died from prostate cancer in USA 2001 (NCHS, 2003)

26.6 per 100,000 white people died from prostate cancer in USA 2001 (NCHS, 2003)

66.1 per 100,000 black people died from prostate cancer in USA 2001 (NCHS, 2003)

Rates of death from prostate cancer are dropping in Canada 2004 (Canadian Cancer Statistics, National Cancer Institute of Canada, 2004)

27 per 100,000 deaths in men from prostate cancer in Canada 2004 (Canadian Cancer Statistics, National Cancer Institute of Canada, 2004)

    To SoldierGurl:
You complain about being called a troll, however what I believe was the SepticTankGuy’s first comment ever on TP was: “Your(SIC) all a bunch of liberal pukes!” Those of us on the left have also been called by rightwing trolls posting here “libtards, f.cktards, terrorist-lovers, communists, unpatriotic, uneducated and silly, educated elitists, homos, idiots, shepple, lazy welfare recipients,” etc. Compared to that, I think being called “troll” is fairly mild. But if that still hurts your “dainty” feelings, you shouldn’t be posting/trolling on a progressive site.
