Think Progress

Politico on TP: ‘Judged by the standard of influencing the conversation, Think Progress is flourishing.’

tppolitico

Politico’s Daniel Libit has a front-page story on ThinkProgress. It begins:

Can a liberal blog launched in the midst of the Bush era – a blog that once obsessed over Alberto Gonzales, Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove and the outing of Valerie Plame – still make its mark in the age of Obama?

In the case of Think Progress, the answer so far is yes.

Read the rest here. Let us know what you think in the comments section.

Think Progress? Isn’t that a place where insects hang out?

Yes. Bonus mens niteo penuriosus mens es ventagium sicco.

  3. Marie says:

Some of us have been here since TP was born. We’ve known this for a long time. I have noticed in recent months that Olbermann, Maddow, Schultz often elaborate on topics I have seen on TP. There is no doubt that TP is having an impact. :)

  4. Death Counselor says:

I still obsess “over Alberto Gonzales, Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove and the outing of Valerie Plame” and wonder when all of them will face a jury and BE HUNG FOR TREASON? Bush and Cheney have confessed their treason, I am just await the hanging on the Pay-Per-TV schedule. Gotta have some way to pay down the IMMENSE DEBT they screwed us into. THE IRAQ WAR WAS OFF THE BOOKS FOR 6 years. Of COURSE Obama would end up having a deficit, fvking DUH!. He has took the RESPONSIBLE position and ACCOUNTED for the Bush wars of choice and Obama did the RIGHT and RESPONSIBLE thing and accounted for the $200 BILLION per year spent on the BUSH WARS OF CHOICE.
Hmm, let’s see $200 BILLION X 6 years, Hey that’s $1.2 TRILLION dollars and we are not even counting the $2 TRILLION that RUMSFLED absconded with.

I can hear the conservatives that read that politico article now: I HOPE THEY FAIL!!

    WAIT!

    THEY’RE NOT?

    #$%&*#@ THINK PROGRESS!!

Poor republicans. I almost feel sorry for them. Almost.

  6. Reggie says:

If Bill O’Reilly reads the post at Political, he may have a stroke.

Jessie Waters, if you happen to read this, could you please ask Mr O’Reilly when is he going to finally act like a man, admit he made a mistake, and apologize to Ms. Terkel for send you to stalk he across state lines.
It’s been six months and the apology is long overdue.

  7. Hoodathunk says:

Cue the trolls. This is more local than a Nobel and they will have to whine.

Lock and load, everyone. This should be fun.

  8. sherifffruitfly says:

Kudos to all of you – especially the girl that O’Reilly or whoever was hounding. People who care about the truth and don’t back down are a treasure.

  10. katy says:

    yes!

    CONGRATULATIONS, FAIZ & CO.!

this is great for ThinkProgress and the TP community!

    THANK YOU ThinkProgress!!!

  13. jimspice says:

If Obama/Reid/Pelosi are socialists/fascists/communists, what does that make us? It’s time for more pressure on the people we voted for to do the right thing. Please, more emphasis on moving faster and more “liberally.”

  14. dixie blood says:

Congrats TP and thank you for allowing me to blog here. This is the only site where I blog and it is the most tolerant.

    Keep it up everyone.

  15. ReMarker says:

What’s freaky is the GOPers seem to view complaints targeting people engaged in subverting our government as an obsession, rather than treason.

Thanks T.P. for all you do.

  16. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

This site enables me to make the payroll here at the trolling dept. (or the trollroll or whatever you want to call it). Otherwise, we would have been laid off and stalked by the higher ups at the RNC a loooong time ago.

When an arm of the Murdoch-Drudge-Politico machine sends praise your way, is that a good thing?

  18. evangenital says:

Has Politico become part of Murdoch’s empire yet?

Politico is getting more and more like FoxNews.

  19. flight says:

Think Progress; the truth is a powerful weapon.

Think Progress is redefining the word “liberal”.

Think Progress may well be the standard by which all others are judged.

I enjoy this sight, the articles and the sheer intellect of the people who frequent this sight. It’s great.

    The honor is well deserved!!!!!!!!!!

  20. fedupinmaine says:

Think Progress is my favorite blog. I check it before reading the online newspapers.

    Keep up the great work.

  21. COProgressive says:

As a commenter on both, I come here to get some sanity and get away from the mindless wingNUTS. Both Politico and TP have their good points, but Politico has a base, and I do mean base, or debase of disgusting wingNUTS that get would get voted down here. Something Politico should consider.

  22. katy says:

    whew! i’m so glad i didn’t speak too soon…
that was a really good article, faiz…

this line stood out for me:

goldfarb says – “They’re a shameless bunch of lying, distorting, propagandists, which I respect,

now THAT says a lot there… “respect” … and lots of projection…

and I don’t know what MSNBC would do without them,”

    such flattery!!!

oh, and thank you, Politico’s Daniel Libit, for that story!

  23. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

I’m think about becoming the next Murdoch and placing a bid for TP. This site has been too good to facts and the quality of political research and not good enough for the GOP’s fortunes.

I want to purify the message (once I get that bonus check the RNC told me six months ago was in the mail).

  24. DallasNE says:

The watchdog role is vital in a democracy so when ThinkProgress fills that role they are filling a vital role.

I would like to see more policy debate pulled out of the wonk room where it would gain greater visibility. Other than that, I say just keep doing what you are doing.

  38. Hoodathunk says:

When an arm of the Murdoch-Drudge-Politico machine sends praise your way, is that a good thing?

No, that is an awesome thing. They may have crap between their ears but at least they can acknowledge an opponent. When was the last time TP (granted a major underdog) did that?

  39. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

I am the Col. of Keyboard Commandos. My assignment is dual-hatted as the Chief of Staff of the Basement Brigade. I previously served in the Fighting Hellmice as poop collector. I have lots of experience with poop.

  40. Briseadh na Faire says:

Let us begin with level flight.

  41. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

High praise indeed from the Fixed News of the Internet.

  42. evangenital says:

ThinkProgress and HuffPo are my two favorite sources for on-line news features and hard news itself.

I check both each day without fail.

Keep up the wonderful work that you do, TP folks.

Too many “news” sites these days such as Politico identify more with the rich and the powerful, and plead that agenda to the detriment of anything else.

It is encouraging to me that there are so many bright, intelligent and incisive progressives who post on this blog.

I would suggest to the Politico pundits that they stop eating all the high-calorie slop that the repiggies serve.

In particular, Politico needs to end its policy of blindly parroting the crazy white-wing crap, especially in regard to health care.

Perhaps the Politico pundits might actually do some investigative journalism, for a change, and stop with all the biased crap about national health care systems of other nations that these pundits pan so often.

Try interviewing some of the hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals who live and work here, but who return to their home countries for any medical needs.

    How about it, Politico pundits?

Can you give all the repiggie dogma a rest, just for a week or two?

  43. Hoodathunk says:

While TP may overindulge in the trivia, that is part of its magic. Having Politico give a nod to that is important. TP, keep having fun and definitely keep up the serious work.

Poking fun at the insanity is part of what makes TP work. If you can’t have fun from time to time, the rest is just depressing.

  45. Innocent Bystander says:

Congrats Think Progress. Very well deserved! You are on my “must read” shortlist. Outstanding reporting, citing, and analysis.

Of course, a side benefit is the enjoyment I get watching the regulars play troll-smack. Nothing seems to drive the Reons and Rubes crazy like a site that’s willing to tell the truth. Keep up the good work – let the Truth Prevail.

  46. Hoodathunk says:

katy, chavez complaining about not winning the Nobel ranks right up there with Cheney whining.

  47. SmokeyJoe says:

This is terrific news. Most of us really have no idea how much traffic sites such as this gets daily so I am happy and pleased to not only see that your doing well, but that you’re also being recognized.

Think Progress is fantastic and is a site I quote often during the week when posting at other blogs. I trust completely what I read here. And the comments I read as well are written by intelligent, informed people.

We are in the midst of taking our country back from the nut cases. And Think Progress is playing a big role in this regard.

  48. thejoshuablog says:

The most surprising part of the rather good article, is that Politico published it, and did so with the meme – TP good — kept up top…leaving the silly criticisms for latter half.

  49. katy says:

TP is based on, and is always practicing,
that which is sorely missing in the MSM/SCLM –
    STANDARDS.

  50. Zooey says:

    *sniff*

    So proud…

Our TP crew is all grown up now.

  58. P.D. says:

Congrats TP. I have only been here a couple of months, but you truly rock.

  59. ralph the wonder llama says:

Larry the Septic Tank Guy says:
60, good question. I’m going to leave that to slappy and kwsventures because I haven’t had time to study the issue as much as I would like. But mostly because I would say he’s a socialist nazi.

    Three points:

one, “socialist nazi” is an oxymoron. One of the first groups the Nazis targeted for elimination were the socialists.

Two, even if there were such a thing, and the President were one, there is no law against holding or espousing a particular political ideology.

    So good luck with that.

And three, if you’re gonna leave your thinking to slappy and kwsventures, you’re gonna wind up convinced that the world isn’t fair because it doesn’t seem to follow the rules that you think it’s supposed to.

Although I suppose that will happen anyway.

  64. P.D. says:

My friends, I have had a MSM black out this weekend. I have to know. How many people marched for Gay rights? I read tens of thousands showed up. Was it more than the 912 protest? That was pegged at 50,000 to 70,000. Was the Gay march bigger? I can’t get a number.

  65. tanglewood says:

I love Think Progress it is one of the first places I come when I need information and you never let me down. I also like Raw Story, Atrios, and Crooks and Liars.

Politico is republican and its owner is a big republican donor……I have never been that impressed with Harris or VanDeHei and as for Mike Allen, he’s a gossip queen…they think they set the tone for the day……they don’t set the tone for my day.

  66. SP Biloxi says:

Congrats to TP. It is an informative blog and a blog that is earning credibility. Now, Politico’s story on TP should be next to the news story of Obama winning the Nobel prize. I just want to see the wingnut media’s head spinning and exploding.

  67. EugeneDebs says:

Big deal. A lying repug site has finally put together one-plus-one and came up with two.

I already know TP is great and I don’t need no stinkin teabagger to tell me so.

The above sentiments also apply to repugs telling me that Weiner, Grayson and Frank are great. Nor do I need them to tell me President Obama deserves the NPP.

I just want them to STFU NOW.

A tip of the hat to TP. I’ve been reading and venting here for some time now. It’s been a great source of ammunition against those who try to spread fear and ignorance.

Thank you TP. Keep it up.

  74. Hey There Delilah says:

Good for TP and keep on giving ‘em hell.

  75. Game of Life says:

What the GOP REALLY means …

What is the matter with you? It’s not like TP needs another troll.

  76. katy says:

from the comments at the politico story, sembi says:

Think Progress has the inability to look at the issues objectively. Their militant, terrorist ways are scary – because we all have to think like them.

    God help us.

They are the bullys of the internet.

    ah hahahahaha!

    go TP!!!

  77. cmoose says:

While Politico seems quite biased to me, I agree with them when it comes to focusing on people like Glen Beck. If it comes to getting him off the air by pressuring his advertisers, I’m all for it. I don’t need to hear about his daily outrages. One of the reasons that I get my news mainly from Think Progress, Crooks and Liars, and Media Matters (among others) is the low opinion “traditional” media has for it’s customers. Must we aim television news programs only at people that are too lazy to read? Glen Beck is only the worst of a very bad bunch. Meanwhile, WP and NYT have sunk to new lows as a Republican mouthpiece and a war monger, respectively. Think Progress is successful because it has only the above mentioned blogs (and a few others) as competition in the political news business. The right wing blogs are only trying to amplify the traditional media’s message, and it hardly needs that.

  78. Jane E. Schneider says:

Way to go, Faiz, Amanda, and everyone at TP! Of course, we’ve noticed for some time that Rachel and Keith followed TP stories, but it’s great to get more notice.

I can’t believe TP only started in 2005, I feel like we’ve been here longer than that.

  79. AaronQ of Maine says:

Politico has finally stumbled on the bipartisan formula that Shepherd Smith @ Fox News made up:
1 part truth + 32,000 parts crazy fear mongering lies= Fair and balanced

  80. laworder says:

Think Progress helped me keep my sanity during one of the worst presidencies in U.S. history. 8 years of absolute hell is having some arrogant moron (W) talking to the American people like we’re a bunch of 4th graders.

I’ll never forget President Barack Obama’s first answer to the first question he received as president. It took him just 7 minutes to answer! I was proud of my fellow Americans for supporting and voting for someone so intelligent and articulate. I think the whole world breathed a sigh of relief that one of the darkest chapters in America was history.

Keep up the good work Think Progress. Nothing matters more than the facts.

Politico should confuse Thinkprogress with the easily manipulated and lately tabloid driven Huffington Post. Think Progress has never changed from who and what it was intended to be….and thank god….. Places like the Arianna Television Obsessed Huffington and her blog site no longer has the appeal it once had….. And the fact that Politico thinks it can write up an article on Thinkprogress, in a way to manipulate them in to stop going after and exposing many members in the Obstructionist Party just only shows what an outstanding job their doing…. Politico, not everyone is Arianna Huffington and Thinkprogess, keep up the good work.

    g’nite all.

  103. RUCerious says:

I’m buzzing in quite late to say…

    Congrats you TPers.!

Now, if we could TP FuaxSNOOZE!!

  104. cali says:

Thank you Think Progress for having the best site. When I get home from work, I come straight here to find out the days news. Thanks for being here and the great work .

  105. ppatt says:

Anytime we get conservatives suggesting that a progressive blog is taking the low road by exposing conservatives and conservative pundits taking the low road KEEP DOING IT.

When Bill O’Reilly calls you an “Insect” for the right-wing hypocrisy you’ve exposed you know you have done a very good job. When someone from Freedomworks tells you that you would be more effective arguing policy then don’t let up. Argue policy but don’t let up on theother stuff.

  106. SKdeA says:

Congrats TP, we knew we loved you but it’s nice to see that the right FEARS you! And us insects!

  107. okie dokie says:

    Thanks,katy I’ll check that out.

Thanks, TP for calling out Coburn.
Looks like he’s finally pinned to the wall.
I haven’t seen any polls (They might be illegal here, now)
but from comments I’ve read on local papers,
little support is to be seen for him.

  108. tantrictim says:

congrats on the kudos, however i always thought that Politico was a right wing bulletin board for gop talking points?

  109. Briseadh na Faire says:

Did anyone (besides me) go into the archives back to January, 2005? The comments were nothing but spambots back then.

For my part, I’m thankful to have a forum whereby we can all post instantenous “letters to the editor” and have a global readership. I’m just lucky pundits like O’Reilly can’t figure out how to pronounce my moniker or he might be deriding some of my comments on Fox.

  111. Virtual Pebble says:

First impression of the Politico piece? Not bad.

If I were to really critique it, I’d read it again tomorrow, probably more than once, maybe pull a copy down to a text editor so it can be annotated and then start beating on it.

  112. pags2 says:

The idea that O’Reilly, Beck and other neocons hate the site means it is doing its job. TP and other similar blogs keep the pressure on these people who abuse the airwaves with their twisted logic and lies. Once you strip out the name calling, trolls and rants, what is left are nuggets of reasoning that clarify many issues in simple terms. Maybe we can get Glen Beck to obsess on the site and create more free advertising.

  113. Hey There Delilah says:

    What happened to Slappy?

  114. EugeneDebs says:

Well its Slappy. People are so sick of him constantly begging us to pity him they see his nick and vote down even such inocuous statements and send them to the sewer.

  115. Robt says:

I can only benefit from Think Progress’s information and reporting as you continue in the Obama years and beyond.

    Thanks

  118. Perry logan says:

It matters not a turd what Politico thinks.

  119. angels81 says:

Congrats TP for the best blog out there. I’m proud to be one of TP’s insects.

  120. gturck says:

Freedomworks spokesman Adam Brandon tells Thinkprogress how to better engage and that says it all. It is like Hitler telling Eisenhower how to best hold on to Belgium in the Battle of the Bulge. Nothing says success like the yelping of your adversary to be more effective.
    Congratulations!!

  121. zxbe says:

Congratulations TP. This has become a daily must-read for many of us. Keep up the good work.

  123. Purple State says:

TP, thank you for showing that liberal and progressive messages can still exist in a society that attempts to reformat itself away from the conservative message that bogged our country down for the last eight years.

In a side-by-side comparison with RedState, you guys obviously are more cultured, civilized, and pronounced with your articles on the opposite side. The fact that Wonk Room and the other associated sites help back your message says even more; RS has to depend on the loon front and FoxNation.com to coexist.

And don’t even bother answering the trolls regarding the “giving-attention-to-Beck-and-FreedomWorks” meme. If that was the case, Twajie would be Keith Olbermann’s biggest fan.

  124. dumbstruck says:

    Has anyone said “kudos” yet?

Kudos is a goofy word and about the only time you see it is when it’s used to congratulate journalists.

It’s like they made it up just for them.

    Anyway …. Kudos.

Don’t let up on the bastards for one minute!

  125. Marie says:

Politico was launched as an “independent” web site. I was skeptical, but gave it a try. Within weeks, I was writing to VanderHei and Harris, pointing out that their claim of independence was belied by their reporting, and when one reads comments written by readers, it is even more apparent that they are a right-leaning, conservative website.
For them to acknowledge the influence and power of Think Progress makes this article even more important.

  126. Marie says:

I am sure that TP was around long before 2005; it was an off shoot of Center for American Progress, and I believe the original TP began sometime in 2002 or 2003. Perhaps it was reorganized in 2005 to the site we are all familiar with today — can someone back me up on that? Or am I mistaken?
Remember some of the old regulars?

  127. bterway says:

Think Pro9gress is a great answer to the idiots on the right who have nothing to offer but negativity, hate, hypocracy, lies et al I look forward to reading the news every day on think Progress and wish them all well and keep up the good work

    123,

    you’ll always be here,

you have nowhere else to go.

    :)

  129. Trollspotter says:

Well done, Think Progress, keep up the excellent work.

  130. Merkin says:

Reading this post prompted me to check my Most Visited bookmark folder. And as I suspected Think Progress is near the top of the left leaning blogs along with TPM and Crooks & Liars.

Ever since I give up on Huffington “Entertainment Tonight Lite” & “Alternative Medicine Land of Woo” Post and decided to sit at the adult table I spend more of my time here. I congratulate you and your frequent commentators.

However, I cannot help but to caution you on feeling superior to some of the right leaning blogs when the comparisons are based on pure effort. Your constant reliance on facts, truth and reality means you must put in much less effort to produce this blog than the rightist who must rely on distortions, lies and faith in long discredited ideologies.

  131. belaccifer lacca says:

Also, #131… ‘kudos’ is a corruption of a Greek word, I believe… means ‘fame’ or ‘renown’

  132. dumbstruck says:

    #s 138 & 139

    Thanks.

You just never know until you know.

    Then you know.

    whoosh, buddy!

Hooray for TP, which makes Drudge look like George Will and Perez Hilton had a baby!!

  134. Bluerager says:

Thank you TP for being here and holding up the left side of the political spectrum. Your constant vigilence and decisive commentary are critical contributions to the debate. I go to this site first before I even read the news. Well done.

  135. ElBruce says:

The Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb says that Think Progress’s focus on conservative pundits shows that its impact, if anything, is waning.

Actually, if the scope of targets is becoming more limited, it’s only because so many have already been picked off. There are a lot fewer wingnuts in government now than there used to be, and they’re continuing to decline. Now the main voice of the right is from people who aren’t elected, so they’re the next in line to draw fire.

“They’re a shameless bunch of lying, distorting, propagandists, which I respect, and I don’t know what MSNBC would do without them,” he says.

I’m interested to hear specifically what lies and distortions Goldfarb thinks TP has committed. If he has an actual list of such complaints, I’m sure that TP would be willing to go over their facts and check them again.

But the fact that he claims to respect such behavior is disturbing.

    /sarcasm

    Seriously, great work, TP!
    Thank you.

  139. Crazy Cat Lady says:

Has Politico been lying a lot? I know they’re slanted right, but when I used to read the occasional article on Yahoo they seemed honest at least.

Congratulations, TP! I stumbled into this place during the 2008 election and found a site where my own hopes and fears were being discussed intelligently (and sometimes, outrageously hilariously) by all of you regulars. I read things here every day that I never hear from the MSM.

  144. Joseph8th says:

Amusing. The trend of the media making its own news has entered the blogosphere. :) Heh.

That said: congratulations Thinky P! This is where I go first for the real grit.

  145. EugeneDebs says:

    SlappyMORON

You cant do anything except constantly beg us to pity you. You have shown that consistantly. You are stupid and pathetic. NO pity for you. You sucked us dry. All you do now is provide the sewer with posts. Sucks to be you.

  146. blood1 says:

Think Progress does have a POV, as does every other website.

In today’s political environment, there are many sites that are more than willing to interpret information for the reader…where as TP provides the reader the opportunity to decide for themselves.

So for Politico to charge TP with influencing the conversation, one has to wonder if they are complaining only because they think that knowledge is a dangerous thing?

TP – keep sharing and we will keep coming back!
