Phil Gingrey’s Stimulus Hypocrisy: Votes Against Recovery Act In DC, But Hands Out Giant Stimulus Check In Georgia

Earlier this year, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) — commonly referred to as the stimulus — without a single Republican vote in the House of Representatives. Since then, a whole host of legislators who opposed the stimulus have jumped on the chance to personally deliver stimulus funds to their cash-strapped districts.

The latest member of Congress to engage in this hypocrisy is Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA). Earlier this month, Gingrey appeared in the city of Cedartown, Georgia, to present a giant check of $625,000 in stimulus funds to the city commission to help fund the the city’s Streetscape project, which will install new sidewalks and infrastructure:

The money comes from federal stimulus funds and will fund the second phase of Cedartown’s Streetscape project, with new sidewalks, landscaping and other improvements to the downtown area. [...]

Believing that the project qualified for federal stimulus funds as a “shovel-ready” project, Gingrey presented the proposal at the federal level, his spokesperson, Linda Liles, explained. [..]

“These federal dollars will allow us to work both phases together and complete Streetscape by mid-2010,” [City Commissioner Scott] Tillery said. “This will be a big boost for the historic downtown area and for the whole city.

The Cedartown Standard snapped a picture of the congressman presenting stimulus funds which he once decried as the “trillion dollar debt” bill:

Gingrey joins numerous other conservatives in opposing the stimulus while touting its benefits and exploiting its funds. For example, following their votes against the stimulus, Sens. Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates to steer $50 million in stimulus funding into a bio-energy project they supported. Rep. Joseph Cao (R-LA) boasted about securing funds for streetcar expansions that came from ARRA funds. And perhaps the biggest hypocrite of all, Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), toured his state handing out jumbo-sized checks that were funded by the stimulus, despite his pledge that if he was still a member of Congress, he would’ve voted against the Recovery Act.

gosh, i guess having the local rag point out the hypocrisy is just too much wishful thinking. from the local rag:

Tillery praised the efforts of Gingrey and his staff in pushing Cedartown’s request through the federal bureaucracy.

“Rep. Gingrey is our point man when we need action from the federal government,” Tillery said. “His staff is always interested and involved in local concerns, and the Congressman will use his influence to make a case for his constituents.”

Also, doesn’t a tenther like Phil Gingrey know that it violates the Tenth Amendment for the Federal government to spend money on infrastructure and sidewalks? If the free market doesn’t want people walking in the street, the free market will build sidewalks!

If the Dems let these hacks get away with their lies, then the Dems have no one to blame but themselves. The department head that is giving the money should be having press conferences in every state where these hypocrites are found. The local stations and newspapers won’t ignore these matters when you draw attention.

1-how about an example rather than a stupid “you guys do it too” comment like your kind tried in the other georgia idiot thread with the georgia inbred claiming that Nobel Prize Winning President Obama (man that just rolls off the tongue) is a half breed?

2-Even if you can come up with some examples of hypocrisy from the dems that approaches this, so what? Does that make it ok? Are you really that stupid?

  20. Marie says:

    Hypocrisy, thy name is republican.

They have no compunction in taking part in these photo ops — they reject the money – which was INTENDED FOR THEIR CONSTITUENTS — then they take the funds and distribute them like they are the generous benefactor.

These dummies down here in GA are full of BS. All these politicians have to do is say that they are pro-life, Christian, warmongers, homophobic, immigrant haters with family values, and they fall for it everytime. When it flooded in the northern & southern parst of the state a couple weeks ago, they were asking, Where is Obama? Where is FEMA? They weren’t pushing any of their tired BS then. Gov. Perdue called the president on Tuesday, VP Biden came on Thursday, FEMA was already here. Perdue was in Panama, supposedly trying to lie to get a business to set up shop here. GA will always have problems attracting new industries as long as the area is plagued by low rates of educational achievement and small minds. Now, the same people who had been in D.C. acting out on Sept. 12th against the president and big government were whining just a few days later, begging for help. There was a funny thing about that flood. It mostly affected North GA and some parts of South GA, the areas where the teaqbaggers live. Very strange. I felt sorry for the people who died and for the children, but the adults I could care less about. But once they get back on their feet, they’ll go back to doing the same stupid stuff.

*Award not valid if superceded by a greater display of hypocrisy by a politician before month’s end. Award not valid where prohibited by law or good sense.
