Teabaggers Try To ‘Flush’ Graham Out Of GOP; Graham Responds: ‘If You Don’t Like’ Moderates, ‘You Can Leave’

In April, former Republican Sen. Arlen Specter (PA) switched his party affiliation to caucus with the Democrats after being targeted by right-wing activists and others within the GOP. Shortly before his departure, an anti-Obama tea party rally focused its attention at Specter, hate radio host Rush Limbaugh demanded that Specter be “flushed” out of the party. A campaign with the theme “Benedict Arnold” subsequently harassed Specter for voting for the stimulus.

Now, after voting to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court and expressing a willingness to build a compromise approach to clean energy legislation, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) appears to be the new target of tea party activists. At a Graham town hall in Greenville yesterday, activist Harry Kimball of “RINO HUNT” protested by constructing a display that depicted Graham, as well as moderates like Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), being flushed down a toilet:

KIMBALL: This is for every RINO who has failed to represent us. [...] [the toilet represents] flushing them, flushing them.

One attendee of the event asked the senator, “when are you going to announce that you are switching parties?” The question drew loud applause from the crowd. Graham defended himself, and denounced the influence of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) on the Republican party:

GRAHAM: I’m going to grow this party, I’m not going to let it get [inaudible], I’m not going to let it be hijacked by Ron Paul. [...] I’m going to find people in Maine, Delaware, Illinois, other places–

AUDIENCE: Move there!

GRAHAM: That can win as Republicans, and I’m going to go up, and we’re going to move this party, and this country forward, and if you don’t like it, you can leave.

Watch it:

Angry attendees in the crowd interrupted Graham with cries of, “You’re a country club Republican,” “Sotomayor!,” and “You lie.” Outside the event, right-wing activist Julliet Kozak picketed the town hall with a sign decrying all “Unconstitutional Anti-Christ Socialist Federal Deficit Spending Programs.” She explained that she opposes what Graham is “doing in our Congress, what he’s doing to our country.”

Graham’s fellow South Carolina senator Jim DeMint (R) was an outspoken proponent of ejecting Specter from the Republican Party. DeMint told a conservative blogger Specter “cut our knees from under us.” He added that conservatives in the Senate need to aggressively “go after” Specter and other GOP moderates.

Update According to the newspaper The State, Graham repeatedly responded to those who accused him of being a "traitor" to "chill out." One man told Graham he had "betrayed" conservatism and made a "pact with the devil" by working with Democrats.

"We're not going to be the party of angry white guys," Graham said to even more shouts. Some people walked out during Graham's speech after he told them, "if you don't like it, you can leave."
Update Brad Johnson rounds up the conservative blogosphere’s reaction to Graham.

And there you have it. The founding fathers were very wise when they established the separation of church and state. You don’t mix politics and religion, nothing good ever comes of it.

For 30+ years the corporatist republicans manipulated the fears of the religious right in a cynical but successful attempt to secure their votes and achieve power. Now, the Grand Old Party is finally paying the price. Serves them right. Conservatism, whether it was democrats of the old south or Republican today is detrimental to a functioning democracy.

  8. AaronQ of Maine says:

God forbid my senator represents her constituents. I live in maine and the only reason we have republicans as senators is that they promised to worked with obama and for the benefit of our people. I’m glad she’s not tooling around with the wishes of the misinformed rednecks of the south.

I’ve met Snowe and collins(she gave my grandfather his purple heart.) and they of the old-school republicans (fiscal conservative small government type). They are not the Neo-cons that destroyed that party. When other republicans hate-on the best people in their party you know they’re going the way of the wooly mammoth.

By 2012 Snowe and Collins are going to be the only republicans left in congress.

I think this is a natural extension of a party philosophy where the objective is to destroy the other party; it gets to be something that people can’t back away from. Happily, a smaller and smaller group of people still want to play that game. Happily, the public eventually realizes that people out to ‘destroy’ are poor stewards of the public interest.

When this kind of behavior is tolerated, if not encouraged, when directed at others, it is only a matter of time before mob rule begins to take hold and all control is lost.

Marie, they will not stop until a sufficient number of Americans have died. The Beast is hungry for blood. The few killed thus far, in churches and medical clinics are whetting its appetite. Those who put money ahead of human life will continue their calls for violence, while washing their hands of the bloodshed they cause.

When the bloodshed hits them personally – then they will stop. But it may take a revisit to the days of the French Revolution – when all aristocrats were systematically beheaded, their entire bloodlines, in an effort to change the disparity of wealth in that country. If our wealthy class were similarly targeted, then, perhaps, the rhetoric might change. But, before that happens, perhaps they could learn from the South Africans and how they moved away from apartheid peacefully.

I saw the video of the event. Graham wasn’t criticizing them because they were “angry white men” but because they were small government people and opposed the Bush/McCain/Graham foreign policy. He’s framing the narrative and the ThinkProgress and the Left are buying it. Graham even bashed antiwar Republicans like Ron Paul and started defending the Bush foreign policy and told those who disagree to leave the party. He’s the close minded ideologue.

Graham is claiming the mantle of “moderation” but is really a neoconservative that just cares about promoting his ruinous foreign policy more than domestic policy.

Where is Graham on attacking the anti-Semitic, Apocalyptic kooks like John Hagee, Pat Robertson, etc? These cranks actually believe the End Times are upon us and are literally lobbying for a war in the Middle East to bring on the Rapture. They’re the crazies and yet Graham, Frum and other “moderates” appear at their conferences and actually lobby for their support. Why? Because they share the same neocon foreign policy and the megachurch Apocalyptic kooks own the GOP primary. Lindsey Graham & Co NEED and WANT those kooks but ThinkProgress is too gleeful at the criticism to realize they’re being played by the war mongers neocons and promoting their neocon narrative.

You guys on the Left should be more careful who you count as moderate or you’ll wind up anointing the war mongering neocons as the “respectable opposition”. If you think the debate over domestic issues has become caustic wait until you inject “national security” and “patriotism” back into the debate and welcome the neocons back from their well deserved exile.

I have enjoyed your postings. I can’t understand your doublespeak, it sounds so much like the rest of the screeching you hear from the conservatives. I just would like to know what happened to the party that was to be in power for 40 years (Carl Rove). I don’t see a love fest with GW like you have with Regan. What’s happening to the morally outstanding pin up boys of the moral, conservative right?

The Conservatives didn’t and don’t have any ideas. Who are your leaders? We have Murdoch’s buffoons or how about the brilliant Limbaugh leading your party. The “C” street gang is looking quite pathedic.

Lets face it boys, you Republicans are a bunch of losers.

  137. AaronQ of Maine says:

These are the tactics you can look for juan to be pulling:

1: Vote everyone down regardless of what they say.
2: Attack the other posters by pretending to be defensive.
3: Say outrageously erroneously things to draw attention.
4: use attention to go back to #2.
5: Never discuss topic because that only leads to defeat.

  138. Pelotonpro 048 says:

Let the bloodletting begin! As the G.O.P. continues to court whack-jobs, low information voters and the blindly self interested more moderate voices will attempt to be heard above the din. Despite the fact that in the last presidential election it seemed to be a contest to be as far right as possible their shrinking demographic will require that moderate voices come to the fore. This will send the neo-cons into a tizzy as they feel their grip on power weakening within the G.O.P. It should be fun to watch!

With the Senate Finance Committee health care vote today, they just pretty-much guaranteed the Democrats an easy mid-term election in 2010 by going ON THE RECORD en masse against health care insurance reform. That will not look good on their resume.

What will they do tomorrow to further their cause?

What a surprise. It’s the old “what goes around comes around” trick, as performed by the Republipimp base. As many others have noted here this evening, the cracker tea-bagger revolt has turned to eating its own. It’ll only get better, or worse; probably better for the Democrats. If there are any sane folks left among the Republipimps, they probably ought to bail out before the zombie tea-bag virus gets ‘em.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch, either.

  244. Innocent Bystander says:

Ride the beast, Lindsay…just don’t fall off or you’ll be trampled in the ensuing stampede.

The typical teabaggers/rubes that are now making the moderate republicans miserable, are just not very politically astute. If they were, they’d realize that they have been voting for decades for the outcome that they are now living with. They bought the GOP rhetoric of ‘family values, taxcuts and deregulation, guns, and God’….they sure got their deregulation and(and a small bribe to give away billions to the rich)!

So, like us, these people are broke, job-less, with crummy healthcare. But, the difference is, they still don’t get it was their political choices that have crated this country. And the solution? Elect more radical cons to make it even worse! Instead of voting against their best interests, they should just stop voting. They should turn back to the church and let the saner parts of this country put the economic systems back together. They can pray and when we fix it, they can proclaim a devine miracle!

Robert Wexler to resign from Congress
    http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/broward/blog/2009/10/robert_wexler_to_resign_from_c.html

    Update:

U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, who represents Broward and Palm Beach counties, plans to resign from Congress.

Wexler plans to meet with reporters Wednesday morning in Boca Raton to detail his next move. A Democratic source with knowledge of Wexler’s plans said the seven-term congressman is likely to take a public policy job that deals with the Middle East. The job does not involve working for the Obama administration and does not involve lobbying.

Democrats expressed admiration for their longtime political colleague — and began handicapping who among their ranks might run. Republicans were critical of the Democratic congressman.

Bush Administration covered up global warming finding, then deliberately kept from Democrats
    By The Associated Press
    Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

    http://rawstory.com/2009/10/bush-administration-covered-up-epa-global-warming-finding-email-reveals/

An e-mail message buried by the Bush administration because of its conclusions on global warming surfaced Tuesday, nearly two years after it was first sent to the White House and never opened.

The Bush administration, and then EPA administrator Stephen Johnson, refused to release the document when it was written in 2007, and labeled it “deliberative, do not distribute” to Democratic lawmakers. The White House instead allowed three senators to review it in July 2008, when excerpts were released.

The e-mail and the 28-page document attached to it, released Tuesday by the Environmental Protection Agency, show that back in December of 2007 the agency concluded that six gases linked to global warming pose dangers to public welfare, and wanted to take steps to regulate their release from automobiles and the burning of gasoline.

The document specifically cites global warming’s effects on air quality, agriculture, forestry, water resources and coastal areas as endangering public welfare.

Is it possible that the birfers and teabaggers are going to TAKE BACK THEIR gNOpig party?

  252. Mike Hunt says:

The Repignofascist’s created the tea baggers now they get to live with them. Too bad so sad. Enjoy it you creeps.

  253. osage says:

CAUGHT BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political power they’ve enjoyed for decades, Republican moderates and fiscal conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the demons they empowered and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and “advocate” the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.

The survival of today’s shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America’s increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

The idiom “caught between the devil and the deep blue sea” is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery.

Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and the inflammatory insanities of mercenary GOP opportunists like Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and O’Reilly are costing them their viability.

  254. KayInMaine says:

Basically, the republic party is a cult and not a political party. We need to keep reminding ourselves of this.

  255. KayInMaine says:

I’ll never forget the first time I used the following picture on my blog:

    http://www.kdebusk.com/bush/images/FlushBush.jpg

The neocons went crazy! My, my, my how things have changed.

  256. Perry logan says:

The salient point here is that even Republicans hate Republicans.

  257. ljm says:

The neo-Repubs are looking more and more like the Taliban. Arch-conservatives who zealously cling to “God’s way” and who are intolerant of others in order to save their own way of life. They use fear and hate; and are ruthless. They carry guns to intimidate, and appear ready to use them. AND they will eat their own.

  258. Pilotshark says:

AWWWWW nothing like the chickens coming home to roost.

poor poor Graham>>> kinda feel for him but i just can not reach him.

  259. fletc3her says:

Hilarious watching them eat their own. If the more reasonable Republicans would just quit the party already and the Democrats would stop fretting about being bipartisan, then maybe we could accomplish something in this country.

  260. Apphouse50 says:

Is the GOP being killed off by self abuse? You betcha. Self-marginalization. And part of me is sad that the credit goes to them: I’d have liked to think the Democrats actually reduced them to rubble, but we know better.

  261. J. Fred Smug says:

    Dear Miss Lindsey,

Welcome to YOUR party. Yes, they’re a bunch of NUTS, but they’re YOUR nuts. Get used to it.

  262. Apphouse50 says:

Plus it just occurred to me that according to them, self abuse leads to teh gay sex.

So with that, we return to Lindsey Graham…

  263. Rascalcat says:

The real beauty of this, from a liberal’s perspective, is that the GOP will not get the independents that they need to win elections, unless they move to the center, like we had to. The problem is, FOX and the AM Screamers have so radicalized the base, they will not do this. In fact, I would not be surprised to see the base form a third party if the “grown up” conservatives try to move to the center.

  264. STS says:

I find it intriguing that the loudest heckler agreed with Ron Paul that Bush was a war criminal … and seemed to have the crowd with him. The Republican insurgency doesn’t appear to be much interested in neo-conservative foreign policy.

  265. linzloo08 says:

This makes WWE or ANTM look boring… Where’s the popcorn and soda?

  266. linzloo08 says:

Good work repugs, all you accomplished was to convince me and many other independents/moderates to switch over to the Democratic Party! I’ve seen 4year olds behave better than this!

  267. susancarrie says:

Listen, let them rave… they will eventually drown themselves in it… not to be missed

  268. Mark701 says:

Lindsey Graham a moderate? It does my heart good to see the GOP beast consuming itself.
