In Ohio, Huckabee takes a veiled shot at Boehner as a ‘phony Republican.’

Last year, just before Congress voted on the financial rescue package, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) told his caucus in a closed-door session that he thought the bailout was a “crap sandwich” but that it should still be supported. Later, on the House floor, he called it a “mud sandwich” that still needed to be passed. Appearing in Ohio yesterday to boost gubernatorial candidate John Kasich, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee took a veiled shot at Boehner in an interview with ONN:

HUCKABEE: What has to happen is that Republicans have to start acting like real Republicans. The reason Republicans got defeated in 2006 and 2008 is because people couldn’t tell the difference between them and the Democrats. In fact, the Democrats weren’t spending any more. What has to happen is Republicans who get elected have to show that they actually believe in something and mean it when they get there. You can’t have phony Republicans, people that don’t have any convictions and, these guys who say they’re conservatives but they went out and supported a TARP bill last year? There isn’t anything conservative about that. There were a lot of Republicans who were wringing their hands saying ‘oh, TARP, it’s terrible but we’ve got to do it.’ No you don’t. You don’t ever have to do something that’s stupid. And that was stupid.

Huckabee, a longtime critic of the bailout, has been making this argument for a long time. For instance, in a Nov. 17. 2008 talk at the Hudson Union Society, Huckabee called the rescue “the dumbest thing Congress has done in a long time.” “I was most distressed that people who claim to be hardcore Republicans and conservatives and free market thinkers, were out there wringing their hands and saying, ‘well we have to do this.’”

I so love to watch the infighting

Boner & Huck sittin’ in a tree
    k-i-s-s-i-n-g.
These Republicans have a big tent, so many kinds of stupid.

  3. EnnuiDivine says:

I’m all in favour of the GOP cannibalizing itself, but I shudder to think that the party would actually appoint someone farther to the right of Boehner as minority leader after the midterms. Cantor? Sessions? Franks?

How about Minority Leader Gohmert? That sounds about right for the “ideological purity” the party is seeking.

  4. Badmoodman says:

Huckabee, a longtime critic of the bailout…

    – - Huckabible thinks all things should flow like manna from heaven. Praise Jeebus.

  5. jb says:

“Crap Sandwich”, sounds like an apt description of the GOP.

  6. P.D. says:

Oh my God. I would hardly call Bohner a ‘Moderate’ but these religious Righties are tossing out every Repug who doesn’t fit in their extreme mold. Just look at what the ‘Tea-baggers’ did to Sen. Graham this weekend. Poetic Justice sure is sweet.

  7. Nix says:

HUCKABEE: What has to happen is that Republicans have to start acting like real Republicans.

Is that why the moderate McCain beat Huckabee like a red headed stepchild? LOL

Making stuff up is great but this is just stupid.

  8. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

JP Morgan is trickling-down on us! 3.6B profit! Thanks Rep. Bayner! You made the right choyce.

  9. Zooey says:

I hate to say it, but as much as Boney disgusts me, Huckafcuk is getting in over his head.

    Who wants popcorn!?

  10. Uncle Ho says:

    Q. How can you tell when a Republican is phoney or not?
    A. The real Republican is wearing his brownshirt, jackboots, and swastika.

  11. barfly says:

I’m loving the meltdown of long-held conservative beliefs, notably Reagan’s Eleventh commandment. It was as much a scam as “fiscal responsibility,” and “respect for the rule of law.”

  12. P.D. says:

Zooey@9, An just think, Huckabee won the straw poll. He beat out both ‘Wailing Palin’ and creepy Mitt Romney. Two of the GOPers rising stars. That says a lot about the Repug Party don’t it?

  13. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

JP is sharing their profits with Juan and aaronk as we speak. They are interested in the average teabagger’s welfare. Trickling-down and the invisible hand of the free-market at work!

  14. Chyron HR says:

    Chris Squire
    Geddy Lee
    Mike Huckabee

Three bass players you don’t want running your political party.

  15. Shayne says:

Huckabee wants to be president. I wonder what he believes he’s gaining buy cr@pping on other Repub leaders.

  16. jb says:

I’m sure Daryll will settle this before it comes to a duel. But then he thinks Huck is POTUS.

  17. The Dogfather says:

Actually, Chyron, I’d let Geddy Lee run my party — he’s Canadian, after all, and probably knows a good public health care option when he sees it…

  18. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

    President Huckabee

    A gifted American storyteller

  19. P.D. says:

Huckabee lives in a dream world. People didn’t vote out Repugs because they were acting like Dems. They threw them out because they don’t like the way they run government. People saw what the Repug Party stood for, and they didn’t want it. If anything, the GOP has to reinvent itself. Younger people and minorities are completely disenfrachised by the Repug party. It seems the Repug’s new motto is, ‘Only, white males should apply.’

  20. jb says:

This is all quite comical and worthy of a good laugh, thanks to the posters here, but then I think of all the people (pigeons) out there that would actually vote for either of these fools and once again my mood turns sour.

  21. Wiz says:

A classic sign of an organization in trouble is when the infighting and blaming starts. The Republicans have been criticizing each other almost as much as they have Democrats. While the pollsters and the pundits are predicting Republican pickups in 2010, the infighting may mitigate the potential for these gains. The Repubs going after Snow, Graham, Collins and anyone else who dare to do anything but what the radical right wants. They already drove out Spectre, now the question is will we see more aisle jumping.

  22. spearNmagicHelmet says:

if only we could get michael vick to mc these little slap fights.

  23. LizCoro says:

Jeez, I thought Huckabee was faux’s stomach-stapled banjo player??

  24. GeeDubs says:

I think there’s a lot to criticize about the TARP bailout, but the FREE MARKET got us into this, and he wants the FREE MARKET to get us out of it? Um…maybe it’s because the term has the word ‘free’ in it…

  25. EnnuiDivine says:

Yeah, seriously, I wouldn’t mind having Geddy Lee leading a political party. He’s patriotic (against the seccession of Quebec), a humanitarian (member of USA For Africa), and, being a patriotic, humanitarian Canadian, likely supports single-payer healthcare.

  26. evangenital says:

What happened to the “fitness” buff known as Huckabee?

He’s really packing on the pounds these days.

With all his constant braying and yelling about his faith, why isn’t he back in the pulpit 24/7?

Why has he forsaken ministerial work for politics?

Can he get even richer and fleece more people on a national scale?

  27. GeeDubs says:

Plus, I wonder how long they can keep firing at each other before there’s only one red-shirted, rifle-toatin,’ fundy free marketer left. Let’s hope Huck and his ‘friends’ do so much damage to each other, they’ll never be able to crawl out of the grave again.

  28. laprofesora says:

    Dear Santa,
What I’d like for Christmas this year, please oh please, is to have Sarah Palin seek the RepubliSCUM nomination for President. I would LOVE to watch her fellow “conservatives” chew her up and spit her out, while we progressives quietly witness the spectacle. And Santa, if I get my wish, I promise to be extra good next year.

    Your friend,
    La Profesora

  29. Shayne says:

Huckabee seems to be echoing Limbaugh’s mantra that they’re not far enough to the right. Apparently the two have more in common than just gastric bypass.

  30. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

I’d take a juicy well-done burger with the fixins, doritos, soft tacos, and all 27 dunkin donuts over the presidency anyday. I’m with Huckabee on this. Fox News provides the free-market salary to make it happen.

  31. evangenital says:

Huckabee and the rest of the repiggie clowns are running around frightened to death of the big black genitalia.

That’s what this whole anti-Obama thing boils down to.

    It’s size issues, folks.

All these repiggie fat guys are most likely diabetics that can’t “get it up” without enormous amounts of viagra, cialis and the like.

  32. tarazan says:

Huckabee: “The Bailout was a ‘Crap sandwich’”.

And if I win the Presidency…It will be nothing but a ‘Fried Squirrel’ sandwich”.

  33. evangenital says:

Aren’t the Boner and Jesus on a first-name basis?

They play golf together, don’t they?

Does Huckabee troll around pancake houses with Jesus?

  35. wolfsinger says:

With news of Huck biting at Boehner’s ankles and the GOP Christian right taking pot-shots at Lindsey Graham, it makes me hopeful that the wholly uncivil anger and hate being vented at dully elected Dems will now get focused on the ever-shrinking, every-crazy GOP, its “leaders” and its machines of war: FOX and Clear Channel.

Although, I’m not holding my breath. When it gets like this, Christian right GOP thugs are nothing if not mean-to-the-core. They will ALWAYS don their jack boots and “Get In Line” with the GOP thug of the day. Come hell or high water.

  36. paleolib says:

I do so love the sound of a 21 gun salute from the wingnut circular firing squad. Time for Huckles the Clown and the Boehnerman to reload.

  39. LeslieBurton says:

These people are all nuts, I tell ya! The thing that freaks me out is when I hear pundits talking about the republicans taking back seats in the 2010 election.

  40. Roket says:

Hark, is that the voice of the republican party I hear?? No wait. What’s today? I know that McSenile has Sundays but who has Wednesdays? No wait he said this on a Tuesday. Me thinks Huckabee skipped a turn.

  41. Pagan_American says:

Seriously, do you think the Repugs can pick more than just a few seats in the House? I see them losing another 4-7 seats in the Senate. They don’t have a coalition anymore. Any moderate will get ignored by their base and Right Wingnut will get ignored by Independents.

I just hope the Dems play hardball when the election cycle kicks in. Can you just imagine the infighting after the Repugs lose more seats in 2010 and after Obama gets re-elected in 2012? Should be light watching the WWF.

  42. evangenital says:

I bet that Huckabee has a secret stash of gay muscle porn at one of his hideaways.

  43. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

We shouldn’t underestimate the crazy extremists from the right. Many independent voters voted for Obama, but if he continues to sit on the sidelines as democrats fight it out over a public option, if more jobs aren’t created, if a crappy health care bill is signed and if the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan get worse many of these independent voters could switch to some right wing extremist candidate in 2012.

The reason I say this is because all of the bull being spewed by these extremists in the MSM is going unchallenged by the democrats who need to fight back hard against these dangerous lunatics if they want to remain the majority party.

  44. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Huckabee is dead wrong on why the Republicans were defeated in 2006 and 2008. The GOP lost because voters got very sick of and very tired of the idiot war-mongering lying Bush and his endless imperial occupations (please note: President Obama…). Voters were tired of having American elections hacked, rigged, Diebolded and stolen by Republican operatives. Voters were tired of the racist indifference of the Bush Administration after hurricane Katrina and the Bush flooding of New Orleans…

  45. jbrantow says:

I heard that on the boners web site they have posted a lesson on how to properly pronounce his name……
I’ll stick to “BONER”. It says so much in so few letters.

  46. Xisithrus says:

I have this sudden urge to have some breaded and popcorn fried pecan crusted red squirrel

  47. Zimzone says:

The Mayberry Think Tank told Huckabible to ‘play to his bass’…

  48. J. Fred Smug says:

Ah, yes: Republicans in turmoil over the George W. Bush Troubled Asset Relief Program. The wingnuts have no concept of responsibility/ownership. Everything’s Barack Obama’s fault now.

  49. pags2 says:

It is easy for Huckabee to sit on the sidelines and throw bombs. However, if Boehner and the Republicans failed to go along with the bailouts and stimulus, and the economy dived into a depression, they would have been blamed. Then there would be almost no Republicans in Congress. Even some of the hardcore in the southern states would have been tossed. From the Dems point of view, that would have been better for them because the backlash against the Republicans would have been even worse.

Huckabee is doing the Limbaugh dance by trying to move the party further to the right. He is laying out his strategy for winning in 2010 and 2012. The theory is that Republicans lost because they were too moderate. That is incorrect because the economy is what caused the defeat of the Republicans. If Huckabee is wrong, which he is, and drives the party further right, the losses in 2012 will be even worse. The catharsis would force the party to reform or dissolve. My bet is on dissolve because the radical right wing is not going to allow the party to take moderate positions even if the polls show they are going to lose big. The radicals think their positions are more important than winning seats.

  50. Virtual Pebble says:

Sheeyit, Hucklebutt, Boner ain’t no phony Republipimp, he’s just a phony. But he’s Republipimp all the way, and an embarrassment to the George Hamilton Method.

  51. Virtual Pebble says:

    From Matt’s post;

“Huckabee, a longtime critic of the bailout, has been making this argument for a long time. For instance, in a Nov. 17. 2008 talk at the Hudson Union Society, Huckabee called the rescue “the dumbest thing Congress has done in a long time.” “I was most distressed that people who claim to be hardcore Republicans and conservatives and free market thinkers, were out there wringing their hands and saying, ‘well we have to do this.’””

Setting aside Boner’s phoniness for a moment, it’s apparent that Hucklebutt and a bunch of other Republipimps haven’t the least understanding of economics at the state, national, or international scale. If they did, they’d quit whining about countercyclical government driven monetary operations and do something about pushing the recovery forward. Oh. Sorry. They want Obama to fail on that one, don’t they? My mistake, Republipimps, keep whining.

  52. Mike Hunt says:

Repignicans eating Repignicans – and I don’t mean that sexually. What a beautiful sight. Please keep it up you morons. At least until after the 2012 election.

  53. Pelotonpro 048 says:

CNN is definitely right-of-center a lot of the time. Huckabee is an operative of Rupert Murdock and the RNC. Surely CNN could find a conservative spokesman who isn’t directly on the payroll of a News manufacturing organization! This is a lame attempt to counter right wing criticism of not being,”fair and balanced.” Huckabee and his ilk have a news outlet 24/7! I would like to hear more moderate Republicans have a voice. Under the current media environment this will never happen because media outlets are helping to maintain the conservative litmus test. Since when is preserving the status-quo equated with good journalism?

  54. Leftside Annie says:

    Huckaboob gives me the creeps.

Hell, they ALL give me the creeps. *shudder*

  55. decora says:

as long as the dow keeps rebounding, the ‘phony republicans’ are not going to really care if they are being ‘ideologically pure’…. many rank-and-file Republicans are pragmatists, not ideologues or podium pounders.

  56. decora says:

i find it a bit disturbing how many people are using epithets like ‘repiggie’ here…. its rather dehumanizing… i dont think many heroes of liberalism would really be comfortable with that language… they might understand the anger but… … i dont see JFK sitting around calling his opponents ‘pigs’

  57. okie dokie says:

    Unfortunately, decora,
JFK was assasinated before George Harrison wrote “piggies”.
