Today on Fox News, RNC Chairman Michael Steele railed against Democratic efforts to reform health care and said how proud he was that Republicans have stalled action. “They told us in June that there would be a health care bill on the President’s desk on Aug. 1,” he boasted. “I think our efforts helped change that dynamic.”
But with Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe (ME) supporting the passage of the Senate Finance Committee health bill — and with news that Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) may be willing to break from GOP ranks to support legislation — the Fox News host asked Steele whether the health care “train” had left the station without Republicans on board. Steele then compared himself to a cow:
HOST: Very quickly, Chairman Steele. The feeling in some circles is that this health care train has left the station with President at the wheel, and Republicans better jump on board.
STEELE: Well, I’m the cow on the tracks, and you’re going to have to stop that train to get this cow off the tracks and move forward.
Later during an interview with Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY), another Fox News host laughed about Steele’s analogy, pointing out, “If you look at that analogy, the cow is not much of a match for that train.” Watch it:
Of course, trains often run over cows. If the cow is able to derail the train, a lot of people may get hurt as a trade-off — a fitting metaphor for what will happen if Republicans block health care reform.
Also during the interview, Steele blasted Democrats’ lack of “bipartisanship” and insisted that he isn’t trying to be an “obstructionist.” “To the contrary, I’m saying, can we all get in a room and have a Rodney King moment and work toward something that addresses the common-sense bottom-up approach voters and certainly the voters of our country — you, me, and others — want to be done,” he added. TPM points out that he appeared to be referring to “King’s famous ‘Can we all get along?‘ line following the 1992 Los Angeles race riots sparked by the acquittal of the police officers who beat King.”

Transcript:
STEELE: This has now been turned over to Harry Reid, and Harry Reid is going to draft the bill that’s going, in my view, go counter to everything that certainly we’ve been arguing for with Republicans for the last six or seven months, putting in place real reform in terms of portability, the ability to get small business pools in place, tort reform — all those things that are not part of really turning this thing around. I think what we’ve seen here is a vote yesterday for higher taxes, more government spending, higher premiums, and more government control, and I just don’t think that’s where the American people are.
So, you know, everyone can do their little victory lap and talk about bipartisanship, John, I’m not trying to be an obstructionist here. To the contrary, I’m saying, can we all get in a room and have a Rodney King moment and work toward something that addresses the common-sense bottom-up approach voters and certainly the voters of our country — you, me, and others — want to be done. [...]
They told us in June that there would be a health care bill on the President’s desk on Aug. 1. I think our efforts helped change that dynamic, and our efforts this fall will continue to change that dynamic so we can get to real health care reform instead of government-run health care. [...]
HOST: Senator, just 30 seconds left, but I do want to ask you — Michael Steele, the RNC chair, was on a few minutes ago with my co-anchor, John, and John said, “It seems the health care reform train has left the station. The President’s at the wheel,” and Michael Steele said, “Well, I’m on the cow on the tracks.” (LAUGHTER) If you look at that analogy, the cow is not much of a match for that train.
A ‘Cow on the Tracks’? More like a deer in headlights!

STEELE: “Well, I’m the cow on the tracks, and you’re going to have to stop that train to get this cow off the tracks and move forward.”
Amanda; Of course, trains often run over cows. If the cow is able to derail the train, a lot of people may get hurt as a trade-off — a fitting metaphor for what will happen if Republicans block health care reform.
Generally speaking, cows don’t derail trains; they get mangled and chopped up by trains. In a sense, it’s a simple physics problem; the train has mass and momentum on it’s side and the cow is just a poor flesh and blood critter. Relatively speaking, it’s like hitting a squirrel with a Cadillac. Poor, poor Michael, asking to be run over so early in the day.
A further point is that frequently, the train can’t stop before impact. If the engineer or conductor sees the cow with enough space to stop, sure, but ordinarily, if there’s only a couple of hundred yards (metres) to the cow, and the cow doesn’t respond to the locomotive horn, it’s buh bye cow. In this case though, the metaphor goes awry, because nobody is even going to look up to see if Michael is on the tracks mooing. (splat snark)
October 14th, 2009 at 2:18 pmYou da cow, Mike…you da cow!
October 14th, 2009 at 2:18 pm“If you look at that analogy, the cow is not much of a match for that train.”

October 14th, 2009 at 2:20 pmGo back to your stall, man.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:21 pmHey look, Richard Stall man is here!
Are you a friend of Larry Craig, Richard? I hear he’s a “stall man” too.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:21 pmWhat’s his loco-motive?
Yesterday he was floating around a badly designed website like the Microsoft ‘Crabby Office Ass’t’ & today he’s a bloated bovine laying down on the job.
Bipartisanship, my ass. I doubt if he can spell it, let alone practice it.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:22 pmHey I think I found Mike Steele’s new alter ego:

*now with more crazy!
October 14th, 2009 at 2:22 pmThe,”cow on the tracks,” comment by Steele is very revealing. This cow apparently can’t see the train coming. Steele is rapidly becoming an albatross around the neck of the G.O.P. He almost never gets anything right!
October 14th, 2009 at 2:22 pmShorter Steele: Ill just martyr myself, thats grand chess.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:24 pm#18 – Richard Stallman says:

“Every conservative/libertarian should try to be an obstructionist against these fascist leftists and their insane agenda.”
October 14th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
We’ve been following the fascist righties and their insane agenda for the last 8 years, and what has that disaster brought us?
The larget increase in the national debt EVER. Watching politicians be whores for business and riding roughshod over the average American citizen just for more political contributions. Killing American citizens to pay for wars based on lies.
Yeah, any path is better than the fascist righties and their political agenda which has brought us to the state which we’re currently digging out way out.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:25 pmPsst, Mikey, cool it. You’re gonna blow your cover. I mean, it was incredible that you were able to infiltrate the Republican camp as a black man, and get elected Chairman of the RNC, but if you keep saying stupid stuff like this, the Republicans are gonna wake up to the fact that you’re really a Democratic saboteur. And of course, if that happens, the Democrats will disavow any knowledge of you. That’s the way it goes for people in your business.
But your contributions will be remembered and honored.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:25 pmOf course, we all know that to Republicans “biaprtisanship” means ” doing what Republicans want”…
October 14th, 2009 at 2:26 pmToken Steele has nothing in common with Cows. Cows are intelligent and useful animals.

Thanks.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:31 pmSo if we installed grates outside RNC headquarters this stalling problem would be dealt with?
Awesome!
Thanks for the tip, Steele.

What up, Cowboy Mikey?
October 14th, 2009 at 2:36 pmOnly Michael Steele would invoke an animal metaphor to describe his own efforts. But it certainly is fitting. Last time I checked, cows are able to shit, but not express themselves verbally.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:37 pmMichael Steele had this story planted in the NY Times in 1910 just to prove the cow was American.

October 14th, 2009 at 2:38 pmI’m so very glad this absurd man is leading the opposition party. I’m equally happy he seems to be an endless source of comedic material as well. Heckuva job Mikey!
Just saying . . .

October 14th, 2009 at 2:40 pmHas this republitwerp ever seen the consequences of something being on the tracks?! Throttle up, guys…..
Rest my case…
October 14th, 2009 at 2:40 pmI just heard my other republican senator might vote for the health bill too. Good job my state.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:42 pmGood for you, Michael. Now do all of society a favor and lay on the tracks – spread eagle if possible – until after the train has run over you. Please?
October 14th, 2009 at 2:45 pmHey Mike, when the repubs selected you, I don’t think they wanted you to say anything. Also, you need to share your drugs.

Hitler was an idiot, just like you Richard.
October 14th, 2009 at 2:58 pmLemme get this straight — Steele is proudly his dedication to obstructing this bill (with his body if necessary, I guess), but claims that he’s not an obstructionist?
He’s giving no reason (at least not revealed by the transcript) for his desire to block health care reform. Therefore, it is left to us to infer his objection to it is that President Obama wants it, and he wants President Obama to fail. American people be damned.
That spells obstruction (not to mention poor sportsmanship) to me. What am I missing here?
October 14th, 2009 at 3:00 pmActually Steele: Im got my back to the door on the bus and they are pushing me out hoping to keelhaul me under it!
October 14th, 2009 at 3:00 pmThree out of four Doctors recommend the Public Option.
(Remember all the commercials that started “Three out of four doctors recommend…” or “Four our of five Dentists recommend…”? Well, three out of four Doctors DO recommend the Public Option, so why haven’t some of these 75 percent of doctors run a commercial stating their support for the Public Option?
We trust Doctors when they make a medical diagnosis and prescribe, often-lifesaving, treatment and medication, so why are 75 percent of U.S. Doctors suddenly NOT trusted when they diagnose that our current healthcare system is ill, injured, needs repairing, needs reform? Why?)
October 14th, 2009 at 3:02 pmMost rational people, when they see the light of an oncoming train, will step out of the way.
October 14th, 2009 at 3:05 pmObstructionist ahole.
Frankly, I say run the stupid bastard over. He’s in the way – along with the rest of his bovine brethren.
And…no insult to cows was intended.
October 14th, 2009 at 3:06 pmMyth: Hitler was a leftist.
Fact: Nearly all of Hitler’s beliefs placed him on the far right.
“Many conservatives accuse Hitler of being a leftist, on the grounds that his party was named “National Socialist.” But socialism requires worker ownership and control of the means of production. In Nazi Germany, private capitalist individuals owned the means of production, and they in turn were frequently controlled by the Nazi party and state. True socialism does not advocate such economic dictatorship — it can only be democratic. Hitler’s other political beliefs place him almost always on the far right. He advocated racism over racial tolerance, eugenics over freedom of reproduction, merit over equality, competition over cooperation, power politics and militarism over pacifism, dictatorship over democracy, capitalism over Marxism, realism over idealism, nationalism over internationalism, exclusiveness over inclusiveness, common sense over theory or science, pragmatism over principle, and even held friendly relations with the Church, even though he was an atheist.”
You can learn more here.

I sure hope so.
October 14th, 2009 at 3:17 pmAs a German/Dutch American whose family has been in this country not quite 100 years, I cannot believe the morons who claim “Hitler is a leftist.”
Please explain why German Social Democrats and Communists (i.e., the “Leftists”) had to go into exile or risk torture and imprisonment when Hitler came into power. I just returned from a 2-week visit to Germany and would be happy to refer you to elderly relatives who can disabuse you of your stupidity.
My god – the GOP is REALLY the party of Shameless Historical Revisionism and Ignorance!
Although if you are a conservative, that’s not likely.

October 14th, 2009 at 3:23 pm“can we all get in a room and have a Rodney King moment and work toward something”
Where was the GOP from March of this year, when Congress began working on healthcare reform? They’ve had six months to work toward something, and they decided to work toward their party’s extinction by being nothing but obstructionists. Their fault, not the Dems’, too bad for them.
October 14th, 2009 at 3:25 pmSteele is the goose in the engine of healthcare reform.

October 14th, 2009 at 3:41 pmThis cow sure is a “downer” cow…
October 14th, 2009 at 3:45 pmmajii, I disagree . Common sense is not logical, it traditional and simple. There are hundreds of medical conditions, plans, hospitals, doctors and laws. The legislation needs to be hundreds of pages long to cover all those groups. But republican “common sense” says that anything over 8 pages is too long. Their common sense doesn’t apply to complicated issues, which is why they love dictators so much.

October 14th, 2009 at 3:51 pmHere’s my theory. Steele is playing everyone. He’s providing great entertainment for us, but he’s driving the RNC and GOP base absolutely nutz. No one can convince me that Steele is this clueless or unaware of how his performance is being perceived.
Here’s the thing…the RNC can’t fire him without making this a bloodbath. I’ll bet they’ve already conveyed their interest that Steele just ‘go away’. He’s probably holding out for a huge severance package. If they fight it, I bet he takes them to Court for a really hi-profile, hi-stakes suit with plenty of opportunity to damaging discovery. I can see Steele making this a civil rights case…oh, the irony.
He’s shaking these guys down, he’s outconning the cons.

Aside from a bad metaphor, this is just more Republican childish attitude. They are like little children having a temper tantrum and screaming “My way, my way, my way.” Their idea of bipartisanship is that they get to dictate the terms despite their minority status.

Funny how Republicans didn’t give one single thought or expend any effort towards bipartisan actions when they were in the majority. If they got one single Democrat vote, they “claimed” that was bipartisan legislation.
Now that the right-whining Republicans cannot shove their legislation down everyones throat, they complain about the lack of bipartisanship.

free helth care for elegal mexicans why do liberal want that? o yeah for more votes.
___________________________________________________________
OK, even though you’re obviously a newbie parody troll who desperately needs to expand his act a little bit, you bring up a myth often cited by the wingnuts.
In the first place, there is nothing in ANY of the bills or amendments floated in either house of Congress so far that provides “free helth care for elegal mexicans”.
In the second place, attempting to buy the votes of undocumented residents by giving them freebies doesn’t work — they can’t vote.
And in the third place, even though it would be political suicide for anybody from either party to mention this, the truth is that the American people would be better off if we had a system that ensured EVERYBODY in this country had access to regular health care, regardless of their status.
Face it — nobody is rounding up and deporting our undocumented residents. Even if it was logistically possible (and practical) to do so, our economy has become dependent on them. Therefore, we’ll hear a lot of xenophobic noise coming from politicians seeking re-election, but there will never be any action.
So, since they’re here to stay, what do they do when they get sick? Usually, nothing. Which means that if they get something contagious, like the flu or hepatitis, they’ll just pass it on (especially in they work in a service job). And when their health conditions progress untreated until they wind up in an emergency room, we’ll all pay for it — just as we do now for uninsured people.
Personally, I think I get more bang for my taxpayer buck by keeping people healthy to begin with. Not only does it cost less in the long run, but my chances of picking up hepatitis from an infected kitchen worker are much smaller.
October 14th, 2009 at 4:11 pmmissmolly says:
Therefore, we’ll hear a lot of xenophobic noise coming from politicians seeking re-election, but there will never be any action.
The biggest xenophobes are in states that do not have as many illegals as some large cities. You don’t hear the mayors of any large city endorsing the idea of mass roundups and deportations. These illegals place more of a financial burden on these cities. But you won’t find many people in those cities demanding action on illegal immigration. This is just my observation.

If President Obama is supposed to be the engineer, he isn’t at the wheel; he’s at the throttle. Trains, child trolls, don’t have wheels for the engineer to steer by, trains run on rails and need no such thing. Of course, they roll on wheels and each car in the train has an emergency wheel with which the brakes can be applied if the air-brake system fails.
Back in the fabled day when trains still ran with four man (or more) crews, one man was the brakeman and applying those brakes was his job, along with assisting the conductor. That’s a bit of a digression though.
Nice try, Flatulent Noise and Steeleye Mike. Better luck with your analogies and metaphors next time.

October 14th, 2009 at 6:16 pmIn NY where I live we learn about the predominant political and economic systems in the sixth grade. Among people that are throwing around the phrases socialism, communism and fascism (sometimes interchangeably) It appears that most of them either did not make it to the sixth grade or were educated in the deep south. They know these things are,”bad,”but could not give an even remotely accurate definition of these systems. Plays right into the G.O.P. strategy of manipulation of the intellectually wanting!

Well duh, because if they were at least semi-intelligent, they would know to do some research and think critically for themselves ( Shocker!); and of course the GOP is fully aware that the better educated and semi-intelligent tend to go towards the left and that is a possible explaination for the decling quality of education in the Deep South. Is it just a coincedence that many of the states that tend to go red (except for Arkansas, which tends to swing Blue for some weird reason) also tend to have crappy (for lack of a better word) school systems ?
October 14th, 2009 at 11:11 pmsorry, it should be spelled coincidence, not coincedence.

Yup, that’s about the size of it, Intrepid. The Oxford English Dictionary defines (a) fascist as “…one of a body of Italian nationalists, which was organized in March 1919 to oppose Bolshevism in Italy…”. There are a few other remarks about Mussolini, violence against Socialists, etc. So, since the Fascists, the Falangists, and the Nazis were all anti-Communists, anti-Socialists, and anti-Marxists, one does wonder about the ignorance of the “conservative” and “libertarian” groups and their trolls.
The attitude of their trolls comes across as being generally, authoritarian and totalitarian, but being anti-Communist, anti-Socialist, and anti-Marxist, they must be, ipso facto, fascists. But come on, with Ron Paul as Foo Rare or il Doochie? (snark)
Come on, trolls, gimme a break. Get fracking serious. You’re way off base with the fascist insult here and if you keep it up, we’ll ask to have you banned as a public nuisance.
