Louisiana justice of the peace denied marriage license to interracial couple, worried they might have children.

The AP reports that Louisiana justice of the peace Keith Bardwell has refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple because he believes that such marriages don’t usually last very long:

“I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house,” Bardwell said. “My main concern is for the children.”

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

“I don’t do interracial marriages because I don’t want to put children in a situation they didn’t bring on themselves,” Bardwell said. “In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer.”

If he does an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.

“I try to treat everyone equally,” he said.

The couple said they “will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint.” (HT: Right Wing Watch)

    News Fox,

Yes, please defend this judge. Make sure as many republicans as possible defend this judge. Then claim you’re not racist. After all, the GOP doesn’t need the black vote. Or the Hispanic vote, the gay vote, the youth vote, the labor vote, or any other votes for that matter.

Look at it from the Republicans’ point of view, guys.

  42. dannylauve says:

Speaking as a 47 year old white male from New Orleans, Slidell and Pass Christian Mississippi, and now living in Washington State, the general public does not see this type of racism very often but is still prevalent in that area. There is a real racial hatred of each other that thrives today. As a young adult I joined the USMC and left the area for 7 years and when I went back home, I realized this could not be my home anymore. The area is an angry, ignorant blight and has not kept up with the rest of the country in terms of anything relevant. The economic disparity mixed with the high crime rate and plentiful drug supply has crippled the cities. You can feel the hate just waking down the street. I am happy to have escaped

It’s by Victor Greta of the Sun-Sentinel, and is very in depth. There are no reliable divorce statistics, and the population in general has been accepting of these unions.

This kind of discrimination seems beyond the pale in America today and yet it is only in recent years that miscegenation laws have been struck off the books in many states. Many of the arguments which were used to justify miscegenation laws in the past are used to argue against the rights of same sex couples to marry today. I would hope that this judge’s last century view on interracial marriage could serve as a teaching moment in which we can reconsider the bigoted stance against same sex marriage.

When I complained about the kid and the baloon I meant it as being HEADLINE news when there were so many questions about it being real or not.

Not that we shouldn’t care about the child – just the Natalie Holloway manner in which the media was treating it.

I don’t know, I just don’t happen to recall the last time there was a nationwide hunt for some poor black child’s killer. I just think the media has a little responsibility to do some basic research before changing their entire programming.
