Today is Blog Action Day, with thousands of blogs discussing global warming. Matt Yglesias, the Wonk Room, and now ThinkProgress have participated.
SuperFreakonomics, the forthcoming sequel to the pop-economics bestseller Freakonomics by economists Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, devotes 44 pages to a contrarian view of climate change, calling global warming a “religion.” Much of the chapter praises Microsoft billionaire and scientific dilettante, Nathan Myhrvold, whose solution to global warming is to pump acid rain pollution into the atmosphere. Levitt and Dubner also claim that prominent climate scientist Ken Caldeira does not think carbon dioxide is the “right villain”:
Caldeira is thoroughly convinced that human activity is responsible for some global warming and is more pessimistic than Myhrvold about how future climate will affect humankind. He believes “we are being incredibly foolish emitting carbon dioxide” as we currently do. Yet his research tells him that carbon dioxide is not the right villain in this fight.
Levitt and Dubner’s portrayal of Caldeira is false. As he told Climate Progress’s Joseph Romm in an e-mail interview, he believes carbon dioxide is the central villain:
Every carbon dioxide emission adds to climate damage and increasing risk of catastrophic consequences. There is no safe level of emission. I compare CO2 emissions to mugging little old ladies.
Levitt and Dubner spend much of their time channeling conservative columnist George Will, complaining about a “drumbeat of doom” growing louder from “doomsayers” even though the average global temperature, they say, “has in fact decreased.” The book also repeats Will’s obsession with a supposed consensus about “global cooling” in the 1970s.
My GOD this consensus about a global cooling scare in the 70’s is officially a zombie meme. There is no way to drive a stake through its heart. Its a lie. Its plain stupid but the rightwing cares NOTHING about truth, facts, OR reality. They simply regurgitate whatever they are told to think and dont even CARE if its true. If it is necessary for their propaganda it BECOMES true for that reason alone. I just cant believe how sickeningly pitiful these morons are.

You are so pathetically stupid and such an ignorant punkass troll it makes me sick. Did you REALLY link to a political OPINION editorial then PRETEND it proved us wrong about Global Climate Change? You are stupider than any human being has a right to be. When will morons as stupid as YOU get that if you want to even ENTER this discussion you need to DO THE SCIENCE. Cough up a few dozen peer reviewed articles. Your political editorials about science are only good for lining the bottom of birdcages and brainwashing morons as stupid as YOU

October 15th, 2009 at 9:58 pmAnd who are Micheals CLIENTS? Why power companies like Edison and coal companies. Who said it is hard to convince someone of something when their PAYCHECK is dependent on them NOT understanding it? GOD you are pathetic Marwick
October 15th, 2009 at 10:01 pmThroughout history, fascist parties have always denied science when necessary to make reality fit to their particular dogma.
The fascist Republican Party is no different. If wingnuts accept reality, their entire worldview unravels. A fool like Marwick is just a propaganda troll trying to support their fascist agenda.
October 15th, 2009 at 10:02 pmGlobal warming is a hoagie. If it were real, that little boy in the balloon would have been sucked into externity to the point where we would have witnessed the air balloon bombing the moon.

marwick also thinks that health insurance companies yanking coverage in the middle of treatment is “alarmist.” But hey, look over there, the government might create death panels someday.
October 15th, 2009 at 10:42 pmMarwick you are stupid, brainwashed, and pathetic. Doesnt it embarass you that your entire ideology is based on denying reality? Rush tells you what to think about Global Warming instead of science. You wingnuts are pitiful. You morons are trying to do science as a PR campaign and that is NOT how science is done. Until you can cough up the peer reviewed studies you are just a joke. You bring in the bought and paid for science guys giving their OPINION but not doing peer reviewed studies. You IGNORE the thousand or so PEER REVIEWED studies that ARE how science is done. You do that because morons like you are just the kind of people I was talking about in my first post. You dont CARE what is real. You ONLY care about your propaganda. If you have to LIE, then you lie. If you have to look like particularly stupid and brainwashed idiots then THATS what you do since you couldnt care LESS what is true only what will support your ideology. You are pathetic
October 15th, 2009 at 10:45 pmIs “Wolverine” one of your leading scientists?
A scientist is someone who merely agrees with the science?
Nice logic there, sparky.
Any other subjects of which I can make sure not to seek your counsel?
October 15th, 2009 at 10:46 pmMarwick you are a liar and a fool. There were a few scattered articles that posited the possiblity of cooling but even then the MAJORITY of studies and papers were predicting Global WARMING. You are so stupid it makes me feel sorry for your brainwashed ignorance
October 15th, 2009 at 10:47 pmMushdick
Double lardo fries are also healthy for your arteries.
You should start a campaign debunking the clogged arteries deniers.
October 15th, 2009 at 10:48 pmMarwick you lying ignorant pile of dogshit. Who cares what Travolta and Jackman have to say. The VAST majority of climatologists agree about Global Climate Change. Even YOU, as stupid as you are, know this. No one said Jackman was any kind of scientist. Then again you are a LIAR, you dont care what is true. You are pathetic

For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures. And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise. So what on Earth is going on?

And still there’s not a single scientific body, groups of scientists who tear each others pet theories apart for fun and profit, which dissents from the theory that global warming is occurring and it’s due largely to human emissions.

October 15th, 2009 at 11:05 pmI’m feeling generous so, I’ll give Slappy partial credit. We humans, as a species, needs to change what we burn and how/why we burn it. Of course, that doesn’t mean a return to hunter-gatherer societies.
Mostly it just means conservation through more efficient engines, lighting, etc. We also might have to add a few seconds to our 0-60 times. Eventually, however, it will mean the virtual elimination of gasoline engines.
Let’s face it. Oil is a finite resource that has thousands of beneficial uses besides fuel. Frankly, it’s effing stupid to just keep burning it when alternatives are doable. Living without gasoline will be easy. Living without plastic will cause much more disruption.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:06 pmSlappyMORON
GOD you are pathetic. Still no pity for you
October 15th, 2009 at 11:07 pmI love him too Slappy.
I love him too.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:08 pmThe Associated Press had reported on July 27, 2006, that the Intermountain Rural Electric Association of Sedalia, Colo., gave Patrick Michaels $100,000 and called on other utilities to give more. Responding to that appeal, Tri-State Generation and Transmission, another Colorado-area utility, pledged $50,000 in June 2006. The money in both cases seems to have gone to New Hope Environmental Services, Michaels’ “advocacy science” consulting firm, which publishes World Climate Report, a publication that denies mainstream climate science.
Michaels is a coal industry hack…
October 15th, 2009 at 11:08 pmBTW, It’s also ridiculously stupid to build a roof without solar panels.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:08 pmCould someone tell these morons about the plastic bag surcharge?
Many markets in cities across the world are charging customers for purchases using plastic bags to carry their items.
Only in wingnutia they pretend caring about the environment is no big deal.

I guess someone has to. Of course he is a liar. A moron, and an intellectual lightweight. A propagandist and VERY stupid but its always good that someone loves you. Even someone as pathetic as Beck
October 15th, 2009 at 11:10 pmEveryone should also understand how wrong Levit and Dubner get the topic of oil depletion, AKA Peak Oil.
They do not understand the fundamentals behind peak oil, which ultimately surprises me since oil depletion analysis is nothing more than probability and statistics, which they purport to be authorities on. I myself consider it no more difficult than bean-counting.
This is what they have said in the past:
At one time, I thought Freakonomics was all about looking at the statistics and basic math underlying a premise and trying to debunk or support that premise. They have often been able to do this by demonstrating how that almost certain correlations between cause and effect were simply anomalies that could not overcome the null hypothesis.
But here they say “I don’t know much about world oil reserves.” So, with that, how can they predict anything, one way or another, on how things will turn out?
They don’t even mention that the USA has gone through its own peak oil in the 70’s. This could have formed the basis for a classic Freakonomics statistical studies from that well-understood set of data. Economists largely ignore this topic, yet I thought these guys were FREAK economists, willing and able to buck the tide. Yet they don’t do that. Geez, I wonder why?
The freakonomics duo are essentially charlatans, and they are no different than John Stoessel.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:11 pmThe evidence that Michaels has ever done significant amounts of research serious enough to be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals is … slim at best.
This is not to say that he has never been published in a scientific journal—but merely to say that the vast bulk of his work has been polemics published in non-scientific or non-refereed publication, often publications with an axe to grind. The role of gadfly—picking at the intellectual weaknesses in other people’s research can indeed be a valuable and honorable one. But only when it is intellectually honest.
Harvard’s John Holdren, currently President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, told the Senate Republican Policy Committee, “Michaels …. has published little if anything of distinction in the professional literature, being noted rather for his shrill op-ed pieces and indiscriminate denunciations of virtually every finding of mainstream climate science.”
October 15th, 2009 at 11:12 pmThen there’s the simple step of “on demand” water heaters. Keeping 50 gals. of water hot 24/7 is also, as they say, stupid.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:16 pmmarwick says:
10 vulnerable points on global warming
Those issues have all been addressed. Your ignorance just proves your unsuitability to discuss this topic.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:16 pmginslinger. Dont you just get embarassed at how stupid you are? You know people have been DYING since the beggining of mankind so I guess by your utterly childish logic you shouldnt worry about taking POISON. You are far too stupid to be cluttering up an adult conversation just STFU
October 15th, 2009 at 11:16 pmEven Rick James made more sense than this load…
October 15th, 2009 at 11:17 pmginslinger says:
So when the scientists try to tell us that glaciers have advanced and retreated thousands of times, over millions of years, in the absence of human intervention, we should just laugh in their faces and tell them to see AlGore’s slide show.
When those events happened and mass extinction resulted, we should all laugh in the faces of conservatives that say there’s nothing to worry about? LOL! You people are nuts.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:17 pmIGNORANCE is the overwhelmingly defining characteristic of rightwing trolls.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:18 pmginslinger says:
There is a reason that even Skinner at the DUmp has a DUngeon for global warming nutz right next to the 9-11 truthers.
The “global warming nutz” are those in denial like you! It’s no irony you’re in the same party as the “tenthers”, “birthers” and “fascist plots to overthrow the government”…
ginslinger says:

IGNORANCE is the overwhelmingly defining characteristic of rightwing trolls.
Not just the “trolls”, it’s true for the right wing period… ;)
October 15th, 2009 at 11:20 pmHeck! I’ll even raise the unpopular specter of nuclear power. In theory, it can be done safely and with manageable waste. Basically, one can design a reactor that will breed it’s own fuel and utilize the bulk of the waste. Properly done there would be a tiny amount of “hot” waste (pounds rather than tons) and a larger amount of waste that’s less radioactive than the original ore. Fantastic as it may sound, such waste could, theoretically, be safely dumped back in the hole said ore came out of.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:22 pmmarwick says:
“By taking a snapshot in time, and by ignoring the history and the ecology of the Arctic, global warming alarmists can make a grim case for a disappearing Arctic, and even fool themselves. In May of this year, a six-country effort involving 20 scientists an aircraft outfitted with precision equipment to Canada’s Arctic in an expedition designed to prove that the Arctic ice was thinning. The expedition found the opposite…” – Lawrence Solomon, The Financial Post
Sounds rosie huh? Too bad for you this report was just released…
Arctic sea ice extent remains low; 2009 sees third-lowest mark
October 15th, 2009 at 11:26 pmIn fact, theoretically, one could build a reactor that would utilize the irradiated scrap from the old reactors.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:27 pmWhy would I do that? I am not stupid beyond human comprehension like YOU are. Now YOU should just kill yourself. I know if I were HALF as stupid as you or only had TEN TIMES the amoung of honesty and integrity I would commit supuku IMMEDIATLY from sheer shame. Yeah healthcare will stop people from dying. My GOD you are so stupid it would shame a fruitfly. I bet your sister/wife hides her head in shame rather than admit she even KNOWS someone as stupid as you. YOu inbred pile of dogshit

I’m sure that Obama’s Public Option, single payer health care plan will prevent that also.
You don’t think we should keep people from dying much? Nazi much?
ginslinger says:
Why don’t you just follow your old family tradition and off yourself? You sound too bitter to live.
LOL! Too bitter to live! If that doesn’t sum up the GOP, right wing radio and tea baggers – nothing does! Project much – drunken dork? LOL! ;)
October 15th, 2009 at 11:28 pmpete, most nuclear fuel comes from russia. You’re trading one cartel for another with nuclear
October 15th, 2009 at 11:29 pmWe haven’t even touched on the potential of wind, waves, tides, geothermal, hydrogen fuels and on and on. So you see, stupid trolls, we don’t have to abandon civilized living to reduce emissions and some people are going to build new fortunes just like there forefathers did when that newfangled fuel called petroleum took over from coal.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:30 pmjust the bleepn facts,
Nuclear power is, indeed, problematic on many levels. However, I don’t think we can reject the notion completely out of fear.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:33 pmginslinger arent you following YOUR old family tradition of blowing crackheads on skid row for nickles?
October 15th, 2009 at 11:37 pmpete says:
just the bleepn facts,
Nuclear power is, indeed, problematic on many levels. However, I don’t think we can reject the notion completely out of fear.
Fear is only part of the equation. When you factor in the entire lifecycle costs, investment, cleanup and source of fuel it’s even more problematic than fossil fuels. It just doesn’t add up.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:44 pmPoor trolls. It must be awful to have a hateful hobby like annoying people to no purpose. Especially when they aren’t even good at it.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:45 pmpete says:
We haven’t even touched on the potential of wind, waves, tides, geothermal, hydrogen fuels and on and on.
Exactly… Then we have biofuels and solar which should be able to handle our needs easily if prices are brought down further.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:45 pmjust the bleepn facts,
All that is true with current technology and Uranium fuel. But…
One theory that holds promise is a breeding Thorium fuel cycle. Another is “micro-reactors” and there are others. I guess my point is that there are newer technologies that deserve R&D.
Unfortunately, the biggest problem is human nature and the profit motive. One thing we can’t allow is for politicians, bean counters, and lawyers into the decision making loop. I do not think that it’s a good idea to build reactors at the current level of technology or under the current political/business climate. I shudder when I think about people using the second best alternative to save a few bucks, for instance.
October 15th, 2009 at 11:55 pmjust the bleepn facts,
Biofuels are doable but we need to find a cost-effective source that’s not food. Hemp is one that might work but the political fight is daunting to say the least.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:02 amAs usual, the marwick troll can’t speak for itself.
*yawn*
October 16th, 2009 at 12:03 amOkay, time for a simple question: If right-wingers don’t trust Scientists, Doctors, Journalists, or Researchers who do they trust and why? I’m guessing they make up stuff on their own, click around on the net till they find something vaguely like what they think and just cuddling up with a gun thinking they are smarter than everyone else. Man, Ignorance is Bliss.
October 16th, 2009 at 12:22 am#68 ginslinger has no sense of time. He probably thinks that The Maltese Falcon came out last year. Seriously, these deniers have some sort of mental defect that does not allow them to understand the concept of millions … unless it is in terms of money at the end of some sort of pipe dream.
Repeat, natural climate change occurs on the span of thousands or millions of years, what is happening now is in terms of tens of years.

October 16th, 2009 at 6:21 amWhy do repugs have a desire to ruin earth? You never hear a repug talk about cleaning up unless its something financial. There should be a repug pollute the earth tax levied on repugs.
October 16th, 2009 at 7:10 amThis is what happens when people like Levitt and Dubner have some success writing pop versions of their area of expertise and then try to act like experts in areas they know nothing about.
This is a big disservice.

Marwick,
When the wingnut roundup begins, you will spend the rest of your life in a prison camp for propagandizing lies.
you are scum and should be shot were you stand for even uttering such a statement.

Which one should be shot?
October 16th, 2009 at 8:29 amGuys, let’s stop threatening people for their views. No one should be jailed or shot or anything. Just because we are semi-anonymous here that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be considerate about our words. Let’s keep things civil.
October 16th, 2009 at 8:57 amGeorge Will has no professional credentials in any of the hard sciences.
He is at best the little pipsqueak punk for the oil and coal corporations.
Fred Hiatt and the other morons at the WaPo think that Will talks to God about incremental global warming issues, and that God has told Will that it’s all a “socialist” plot.
I trust the vast majority of the educated scientists on this issue, not the punk pipsqueak repiggie whore.
October 16th, 2009 at 9:54 amLevi the Oracle,
I was only making a point. I was not saying I am going to shoot anyone. I am just saying..if you think it is ok for someone to be jailed for their opinion in AMERICA. then why stop there..lets just execute anyone who does not agree with global warming or health care reform.
sorry but saying the debate is over about climate change to me means..someone wants to silence the debate. it is snowing here today..in october.
i tend to live my life by what I can see, taste, touch, feel. I have been lied to enough by this goverment and people with an adjenda to know that I do not trust anything I am being told about anything anymore.
October 16th, 2009 at 10:42 am‘Global warming is a hoagie. If it were real, that little boy in the balloon would have been sucked into externity to the point where we would have witnessed the air balloon bombing the moon.’
Ummm….what? Externity? So climate change means the laws of physics don’t apply? WTF are you talking about?
October 16th, 2009 at 11:23 am‘Ummm….what? Externity? So climate change means the laws of physics don’t apply? WTF are you talking about?’
My apologies; I see now that you were clearly joking; sorry about that Chief.
October 16th, 2009 at 11:24 amGlobal warming deniers are pathetic. All of them.
October 16th, 2009 at 11:19 pmA few questions: How much co2 does mankind put out now?
How much must be cut back to mitigate 1 degree C, under the IPCC’s models? Anyone know? I’ve heard some arguments, but would like to hear the other side.
I haven’t read their book, but it appears the authors of the Superfreakonomics are simply attempting to make the case that adaptation may be far more feasable and cheaper than prevention.
On a side note:When alarmists start talking about rounding up and imprisoning people who disagree with them it makes their critics case for them.
