Maddow Calls Out Americans for Prosperity President: ‘Parasite Who Gets Fat On Americans’ Fears’

In May, the Wonk Room first reported on the sordid history of Republican operative Tim Phillips — who now heads the front group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) — with respect to his long history of orchestrating “grassroots” lobbying efforts for nefarious corporate and political clients. For example, Phillips helped run a “religious and pro-family” campaign for Enron’s largely successful attempt to achieve energy deregulation policies, and in another campaign used anti-Semitic attacks against Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) during Cantor’s first run for Congress.

Last night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow called Phillips out for using deceptive tactics and fear in his campaigns, noting in particular his role in creating the ads which portrayed former Sen. Max Cleland (D-GA) — a triple amputee and Vietnam war veteran — as a terrorist sympathizer. Phillips stood by every single example of his work for his Republican and corporate clients, adding that he indeed does believe Cleland didn’t have the “courage to lead on the war on terror.”

Maddow extracted confessions from Phillips that he had in fact worked for a Jack Abramoff client to pressure members of Congress to vote against legislation that would have made the U.S. commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands — where Chinese workers were forced into prostitution and mandatory abortions — subject to federal wage and worker safety laws. Even given the deplorable conditions at the sweatshops, Phillips was unrepentant. “I don’t have an issue with it,” said Phillips, adding, “I’m not going to disown it.”

Phillips defended his methods with a curious argument. He disregarded the morals of his tactics, then explained that no matter what his organization says, who funds them, and how they operate, he and his corporate backers have every right to be “involved in the process.” Maddow conceded that point, but asserted that AFP’s fear-mongering and lying is simply bad for the country:

MADDOW: And I have to tell you, because we’re making this about you and me, is that I personally think that you and the folks who do what you do are a parasite who gets fat on Americans’ fears.

Watch it:

AFP, which was founded and is currently funded by David Koch of the Koch Industries oil refining empire, maintains a variety of mini-front groups to attack progressive labor efforts, clean energy legislation, and most recently, health reform. AFP places multimillion dollar ad buys knocking reform, employs dozens of high level Republican operatives planning “grassroots” events, and rents buses crisscrossing the country to shuttle anti-reform speakers to their rallies.

Third-world superstitions will get you exploited like third-world trash. This is the model the Republicans have brought home to the US. It works best in the third-world south.

Calling him a parasite is an insult to parasites. Rachel was just being nice.

Max Cleland has more courage in his left ear lobe than this scumbag has in his whole body.

I do have to give some credit to Mr. Phillips for coming to speak face to face with Rachel. These sorts of one-on-one face-offs have died ever since the “Crossfire” contests. There were barbs thrown, but notice there were no shouting matches between commentator and guest.

I’m staring at you, Bill O’Reilly.

However, I do feel that Mr. Phillips doesn’t recognize the meaning of “grassroots” as one that has no involvement with lobbyists. Their causes may have started small, but they were fueled by big business.

  13. Hoodathunk says:

As long as there is Rachel, there is hope.

  15. jaimymoore says:

From the link in the article, above:

An Interior report found that Chinese women were subject to forced abortions and that women and children were subject to forced prostitution in the local sex-tourism industry.

Process that through a Republican brain, and it comes out:

“The radical left, the Big Labor Union Bosses, and Bill Clinton want to pass a law preventing Chinese from coming to work on the Marianas Islands,” the mailer from Reed’s firm said. The Chinese workers, it added, “are exposed to the teachings of Jesus Christ” while on the islands, and many “are converted to the Christian faith and return to China with Bibles in hand.”

Baby Jesus doesn’t want the commies to stop me selling teenagers to sex tourists like Rush Limbaugh, and then forcing the girls to abort. Bill Clinton opposes traditional American values lik ehot underage sex and forced abortion. Baby Jesus is crying for all the fetuses the liberal media wouldn’t let us grind into cattle feed.

And, after that tour through the mind of a Republican, I need a bath.

  25. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Watching last night, it was pretty obvious to me that Rachel was both VERY angry at this guy’s tactics and continual denial that his movements are far from grassroots as well as being VERY concerned about coming across as a some kind of b!tch. IMHO, she had every right to be angry for all of us and she handled herself with class in her assertive confrontation of him. Philips indeed comes across as a parasitic SOB, both in his movements and in this interview.

    Great job, Rachel!

And more important, as Maddow pointed out, is the direction of control; top-down here, not “from the grass-roots up”. It’s Phillips that’s setting the agenda (under pay from his masters, no less), not the people he’s preaching to with his bus and speakers. In his defence, the tea-bagger rubes don’t know enough to put together a cogent position for themselves; all they supply is the anger and vitriol … on command.

  30. zxbe says:

I don’t believe Rachel should have even conceded the point to him that they have a right to be involved in the process. Freedom of speech does not condone yelling fire in a crowded theater. Their “participation in the process” is along the same lines. They are needlessly creating fear and panic in the public. They are not trying to participate in the debate. They are effectively trying to kill it.

You are the party of fear, and every single stance of your party is 100% based on fear and nothing else.

  38. Dave N says:

I wondering if Maddow will ever have the courage to call out Al Gore for doing the exact same thing…getting fat (literally) and rich (literally) on America’s fears?

While Gore is playing off people’s fears, his arguments are based on scientific studies (and I will admit that there are just as many scientific studies debunking Gore’s claims). But at least there is a basis for what Gore is pushing.

Phillips’ work is solely based on invective and lies.

    Rachel Maddow for president!!!

  47. pags2 says:

Individuals like Maddow can only do so much. It is up to organized labor and other progressive groups to organize counter demonstrations. The Koch company and their lobbyists have offices and counter demonstrations at these places will make them feel uncomfortable. The same applies to Fox News. They have attacked groups who seem unable to fight back with the people power at their disposal. It is time for these groups to take back the national dialogue by exposing these fake grassroots groups and making conservatives feel the sting of bad publicity.

  50. Meremark says:

If it isn’t this time and if it isn’t Maddow — although it very well could be her and now — soon comes the lance to the boil, we all can see the rightwing fear-filled hate-pus head surfacing, and popped in these times with the equivalent of the ‘have-you-no-sense-of-decency‘ shaft through the throat of McCarthy in his time … at the advent of TV.

Maybe today’s devastation of the rightwinger cretin clutch is by their own LIARS simply two words: mission accomplished.

While majorly normal people everywhere see plainly it’s not humankind’s ‘mission’ and it’s not ‘accomplished’ … thankfully.

Watching last night, I was amazed that Philips seemed not to give a damn about anything but his paycheck and unreservedly so, someone give me money and I will do whatever job they want. His attempt to minimize his overall role as then state he was doing this astroturfing as “for the good of the nation” was delusional. Unfortunately, those that fund him will probably not change their tactic.

This was the first time that I have ever seen Rachel state a personal opinion and she stated it clearly as her opinion.

For those who would rather deal in facts, she deserved a round of applause for not allowing this guy to weasel out of his historical and current actions.

  54. wolfsinger says:

I watched Rachel last night. (as I always do) Last night was a lesson in why we must have free speech and most importantly, a free, vibrant press and news media. Rachel was magnificent.

Listening to Tim Phillips answer Rachel’s questions with all the compassion and warmth of a tip-pot despot with his finger on a daisy cutter bomb trigger was breathtaking.

Thank the Gods for HD TV. I’ve never seen the face and cold blue eyes the likes of Tim Phillips who so un-apologetically sees human beings as mere insects that are in his way and to be eradicated purely for profit so closely before.

It has been said through out the ages in many ways: “the LOVE of money is the root of all evil”

Tim Phillips is one of the purist embodiments of that truth that I have seen and I am deeply grateful to Rachel for her courage to speak her heart to someone who is pure poison to our democracy. Last night, she spoke for me as well.

Tim Phillips is a loathsome despot of a human being. A walking, talking hypocrite and psychopath.

The Christian-right GOP worships him, his methods and those he supports. Republicans should be ashamed of themselves to the core of their beings for embracing the likes of him.

Sadly, they are not and we owe it to ourselves to fully grasp the depth of Mr. Phillip’s greed and depravity.

  55. Lefty Liberal says:

    Dave N says:

Why don’t you post a link to those peer-reviewed scientific studies that debunk Al Gore’s claims? Those links must be acutal scientific research which means peer-reviewed and presented in legitimate scientific journals.

  57. okie dokie says:

Maddow did well last night but she did not trounce him. Phillips is a smooth talker and kept his cool. Rachel kept talking over him and that is what I hate about all the cable channel news. They have a 24 hour station and it would seem to me that they can allocate more time for these discussions without having to force the discussion into a small segment. It would have been even more interesting to have other people from both sides with the discussion. I am sure there are many other people who are familiar with these organizations that could have helped.

  62. Levi the Oracle says:

  83. Johnbo says:

The rise of nasty, partisan rhetoric and dirty campaign tricks track directly to Bush the Elder. He didn’t invent them but he gave rise to two of the sleaziest operators in modern politics; Lee Atwater and Karl Rove.

Atwater was his campaign director in the 1988 presidential race with Michael Kukakis and famously apologized on his deathbed for his underhanded tactics in that election. The term “kinder and gentler” was used often after that campaign to characterize how the Bush Administration would NOW act after their scorched earth campaign against Dukakis.

Atwater came to the attention of Bush when Bush adjudicated a College Republican race in which Karl Rove was one of the candidates and Atwater his campaign manager. Atwater and Rove used underhanded campaign tricks to elect Rove to the position of Chairman of the College Republicans in 1973. Their tactics resulted in a deadlocked convention that Bush the Elder, as Republican National Committee Chairman, was called on to decide. He chose Rove over his rival even though it was Rove and Atwater that had gamed the election and caused the deadlock.

Bush did dump Rove from his ‘88 campaign for leaking to the press so he did have his limits but I think those limits had more to do with press leaks that could damage his own campaign. And, of course, Rove went on to fame and fortune as probably the biggest scumbag ever to NOT go to jail (yet) in U.S. political history.

Hmmmm seems like “Think Progress” is not a good name for this website but instead “Stick your head in the sand, bow down to the omnipotent one in the white house and screw everyone else” would be a better title. You’re not promoting progress- just capitulation to one group’s ideas. H

Perhaps I’ll explain a little bit to you. Don’t worry…I’ll talk slowly. burun estetigi Rachel was the one who looked completely flustered, kind of like how John McCain looked during the presidential debates. gögüs büyütme The other guy came across as completely prepared for all of her attacks and gave competent rebuttals for each one of them. gögüs estetigi He effectively portrayed himself as misunderstood by Rachel and she didn’t do enough to damage that appearance. gögüs küçültme Rachel seems to think that evidence of funding from a biased organization = biased representation by that person. vajina estetigi It’s like going to a murder trial and resting your case only after you prove that the defendant had a motive to kill the victim. lazer epilasyon You need to establish much more of their guilt to guarantee a guilty verdict. Here’s a great example. karin germe estetigi What was Rachel’s rebuttal to when he brought up the deal that the Obama administration made with the pharmaceutical industry and about the $150 million in advertising they would do? estetik She was so gung-ho on crushing this guy that she wouldn’t even concede that he had a good point there nor did she effectively counter it. karin germe estetigi She seemed like a White House press secretary shill during that part of the interview. The fact is, if you walked into that debate on Rachel’s side, you left on Rachel’s side. saç ekimi But if you walked into that debate leaning toward that guy, Rachel didn’t convince you otherwise.
