During his Fox News show yesterday, Glenn Beck declared that the members of his radical blackboard — including various Obama administration officials, SEIU, ACORN, and Center for American Progress CEO John Podesta — all support “social justice, environmental justice, REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH!” Watch it:
Beck says he gathers his inspiration from political philosopher Thomas Paine. The title of Beck’s bestselling book is Glenn Beck’s Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine. Think Progress has unearthed startling evidence that Paine also held radical notions about social justice and wealth redistribution.
In his 1796 tract, Agrarian Justice, Paine writes:
It is a position not to be controverted that the earth, in its natural, cultivated state was, and ever would have continued to be, the common property of the human race. In that state every man would have been born to property. He would have been a joint life proprietor with rest in the property of the soil, and in all its natural productions, vegetable and animal.
Paine then goes on to claim that in order for the dispossessed to earn their rightful part of this common inheritance, it is necessary to charge wealthy landowners ground-rent that would be used to…
[C]reate a national fund, out of which there shall be paid to every person, when arrived at the age of twenty-one years, the sum of fifteen pounds sterling, as a compensation in part, for the loss of his or her natural inheritance, by the introduction of the system of landed property. And also, the sum of ten pounds per annum, during life, to every person now living, of the age of fifty years, and to all others as they shall arrive at that age.
By the iron-clad logic of the blackboard, these associations can only mean one thing about Glenn Beck. Who will tell the people?

But everyone supports redistribution of wealth. Economies ARE redistributions of wealth. The only questions are how are the rules of the game set up? Who has the advantage, the monied classes or the middle class?
Given that over the past twenty-nine years, this nation’s wealth has been dramatically redistributed upwards, and that movement has nearly destroyed the middle class and pretty much turned the United States into a third -world nation (i. e., one which exports natural resources and imports finished goods), it’s pretty clear which side Becky supports.

I appreciate your perspective on Mr. Cvetic’s comment. When I first read it I had to do double take. I found the thinking apocalyptic. A steady diet of Glenn Beck produces strikingly similar reactions in certain people. Why people choose to live in fear is beyond me. The religious overtones strike me as odd; religion is to replace fear with hope. The more I consider the mentality of the source, the scarier the prospects become. I assume people gravitate to a core they can understand or associate with.
P.S. I also thought of Jimmy Hendrix. That song did have an apocalyptic tone to it.

I think that’s an appropriate insight. But one of the methods of fascism is to replace fear with hope (done, of course, with a calculated eye at entrenching unlimited power in the hands of a chosen few). But first one makes the fear as absolutely tangible as possible, thus giving “the people” a clear target to fight (while giving away all of their freedom and power to the above mentioned chosen few).

It was eerie to watch the progression of the fusion of nationalistic ambitions of the German state with the elements of Christianity. It is remarkable that the same progression of events has started in this country with the religious right. I must agree with you that this is the formation stage of fascism. The fermenting of fear.
What I do find baffling is the dismissal of the authority behind the separation of church state. Christ warned on several occasions not to confuse the two authorities. Our own founding fathers were very much aware of this warning. This country was founded on this principle.
Mr. Cvetic’s comment at 93 brought into acute focus the mind set of a significant group of people in this country. I firmly believe the rational of Mr. Cvetic’s is the product of poor religious training and the lack of a good liberal education (in the classic sense). The appeal of Glen Beck and his fear mongering is understandable, but not acceptable.

Excellent points, Andrew, particularly #2. Glenda may have heard something about Tom Payne in a jr. high civics class or during a barroom bloviation, and that’s probably the extent of his knowledge. There’ve been several books out recently on Payne, of which I’ve read reviews but not the actual writings, and the consistent thread that runs through them is that Payne was something of a pain. He was anti-establishmentarian to the point of getting himself named persona non gratia and thrown out, often bankrupt or on the verge, and from the quotes above, probably something of a “Leveler”. On the other hand, he was also the great pamphleteer and probably a much more astute conspiracy theorist, at least for his times, than any bozo like Glenda Beck (who’s really more a train wreck than anything else).

It IS Involuntary Servitude to be forced to pay somebody else’s bills, like food and health care. The Government is supposed to be protecting me FROM somebody doing something TO me, not making me DO something FOR somebody else.
An example of the Government protecting me from somebody doing something to me would be:
Buying an insurance policy, and when I went to collect, the company failed to live up to the contract they made.
As far as being FORCED to pay for the military, for somebody who does not want to, that is why we have Representatives, so that they can look into how much is actually necessary in order for the Government to fulfill on its duty to protect our Rights from being violated by people outside the country. The person who disagrees, receives the protection that they are being charged for, so they are not be FORCED to serve somebody else.

His ideas are interesting but how would property be handled after death? For example, someone owns a hundred acres, does he get to will it to his heirs? And if someone gets paid an amount for ceding his natural property right, hasn’t he traded his right for the money? Capitalism (in its pure form) is intended to redistribute resources to the most efficient producers. In its pure form, perfect markets assure that prices are set so as to benefit the most efficient producer, but only just barely.
Here’s the problem: we don’t live in a perfect world. Markets are not perfectly efficient. People are not perfectly rational. Information is limited. The Government has interfered, most severely through cronyism, disproportionate legal protection for corporations, and a wildly nonsensical military budget.
When markets are imperfect and inefficient, Capitalism ceases to funnel wealth to the most efficient, but rather funnels it to the economically powerful (in other words, the wealthy).
So, because we live in an imperfect world, the baseline of our society is already creating a massive one-way tide lifting wealth up from all and giving it to the already wealthy, taking resources away from those who need them and giving them to those who don’t. This tide will happily deprive people of their minimal subsistence needs.
Economic justice seeks to prevent that. It adds a minor counter pressure against this massive tide. It asserts that the benefits of our society are enjoyed unequally and so the costs should not be distributed identically to all. The wealthy have more property and thus they benefit disproportionally from the legal framework and the system of law enforcement. The owner of a fleet of 1000 trucks benefits from our infrastructure to a far greater extent than the owner of a single car. Economic justice does not add enough of a counter-flow to overcome the baseline tide; no one has gone from riches to starving-to-death through being overtaxed.
Environmental justice is even more important since the polluter harms not only himself but the whole globe. Currently, there are only minimal penalties for polluters and they come nowhere close to remedying the harm they cause. Environmental justice merely seeks to recover more of the societal costs they’ve created.

Now, I’ll not dispute the fact that people, regardless of party affiliation, are caring enough to give. Republican people have their own causes to support, as do Democrats and Independents, and those Venn diagrams overlap quite a bit.
However, don’t think that giving is merely a conservative or a Republican quality. People give to the causes that they tend to agree with most. I myself give my time and money for melanoma research and leukemia research.
