Boehner Admits That He’s Now Heard From Supporters Of The Public Option

Earlier this month, House Republican Leader Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) explained his strident opposition to a public health insurance option by claiming he had never met an American in support of it. “I’m still trying to find the first American to talk to who is in favor of the public option,” Boehner said. “This is about as unpopular as a garlic milkshake.”

Of course, the public option is supported by a majority of the nation, but also by a majority of people in Boehner’s home state of Ohio. Boehner’s comments elicited ridicule, as well as visits to his office by many supporters of the public option. The SEIU has a video of one such visit:

Q: So then now he can’t go on TV and say he’s never heard from real Americans about the public option or healthcare –

BOEHNER STAFFER: I think that if he could go back, he might restate that.

Watch it:

Yesterday at a press conference, Boehner conceded that “we have had several phone calls in favor” of the public option. Listen here:

Several? He got that many from just me and my friends!
Even when caught in a lie, they just can’t help themselves from lying again.
Comments from repugs go beyond orfdinary exaggeration and understatement — they just lie. Period.

  2. evangenital says:

The Boner is a total moron.

What is it about the population of his district, that they keep returning that chucklehead to power?

I am grateful to ThinkProgress for its continual exploration of the incestuous relationships of certain Congress critters and the health insurance cabal.

The whole notion of the “citizen legislator” is dead and buried.

Most of the congress critters represent the needs and desires of the corporations, and care only about the approval of the corporate elite.

  3. EnnuiDivine says:

I know Congressional leaders tend to get more heat than other members…but this guy is an absolute trainwreck. How hard is it to just NOT LIE when asked about a policy you disagree with, and provide a substantive rebuttal?

(that was largely a rhetorical question)

  4. dixie blood says:

If his statements were under oath in a court of law he would be charged with perjury…He’s a lying bastard and not of any use to a real Democracy.

He’s sucks up cash from lobbyist and screws the people.

  5. brothejr says:

The man is a Republican and therefore lying is just the screed he lives by. He barely if ever will admit that he has heard from those who want the public option and while this is on tape, in the end he will still ignore it in favor of the health care industry and their interests.

  6. Dave N says:

What’s the old saying, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it”? That seems to be the Repugs’ M.O. these days, on everything.

Wait, that quote is attributed to Joseph Goebbels…how utterly appropiate for the Reich Wing trying to construct their American version of the Weimar Moment.

In America it is simply known as a GOP Whiner Moment.

  8. Pilotshark says:

OH he hear`s from muti people I bet, but if he was to respond it would really really mess up his tanning and tee times.

  9. Mr.Bungle says:

Not only has he heard about the Public Option, but we all know he’s heard from supporters of single payer as well.

  10. larkohio says:

For heaven sake, he kinda sorta lives in Ohio! Ohio has been hit hard by this recession. You know, we used to build cars and other things… Unemployment is high. Lack of insurance is high. Many people here support a public option. He has no idea what is happening in his own state! What a tool of the insurance companies!

  11. ralph the wonder llama says:

Perhaps it’s a new day for Republicans. they’re not accustomed to having to account for their… let’s call them exaggerations.

Let’s help them get used to the feeling.

  12. A Patriot Acting says:

Boehner’s concession, “Well yes, I have to admit that I have heard from several of my constituents that are in fact in favor of a public option. They didn’t give me any money when they expressed their opinions though so tough nuts. Now if you’ll kindly excuse me, I have a scheduled appointment with a tanning bed and a bottle of southern whiskey.”

In a Sen.’s mind several may mean several things. They see numbers in the billions and trillions so several ten’s of thousands is just several in the tanbed burnt brain of the phalic one.

iRi obviously gets it’s information the same place that the other 1% of ill-informed fools get theirs, FOX notNews. Fools like iRi still think that they are in the majority in America. iRi would like to ignore the fact that approximately three quarters of Americans support a public option. It must suck to be iRi although you know what they say, “ignorance is bliss” so stay in that bubble iRi as your foolish opinion is just that…foolish and only your opinion.

  16. belaccifer lacca says:

    The Nazis were socialists Dave.

Nonsense. There is zero history to support such a foolish statement. That’s an invitation for you to tell me that ‘Nazi’ means National Socialist and PROVE that you are the idiot who judges a book by its cover.

The Nazis were totalitarians , you ignorant moron …….

  19. Dave N says:

Never said they were Nazis, iRi…I was simply relating the tactics of the Repugs with the propaganda tactics practiced by Goebbels and the Third Reich. Specifically, the Weimar Moment, and more so, Goebbels’ admission “that he was exploiting the lowest instincts of the German people — racism, xenophobia, class envy and insecurity. He could, he said, play the popular will like a piano, leading the masses wherever he wanted them to go” (Fest, Joachim (1970) The Face of the Third Reich).

The parallels between Goebbels, the Third Reich, and the demogogues in the modern-day GOP are stunning.

Hitler and his goons were just a step to the right of Stalin, also a totalitarian of sorts though I doubt you know what the word really means, public education being what it is these days.
    October 16th, 2009 at 11:02 am

Leave Nazism, known officially in German as National Socialism (German: Nationalsozialismus), is the TOTALITARIAN IDEOLOGY AND PRACTICES of the Nazi Party or National Socialist German Workers’ Party under Adolf Hitler, and the policies adopted by the dictatorial government of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazism

Guess that “public education” kicks the crap out of your wasted private school education , eh George W Bush , Jr …….?

Boner – what a perfect name for this horse’s Cheney.

  23. Mr.Bungle says:

    iRi,

You realize we aren’t a capitalist nation. We are a democratic one. Through our democratic process we have chosen a regulated (albeit poorly) market economy.

Socialism is an economic system just as capitalism is. Democracy is a political system. The political systems don’t go hand in hand with a particular economic system.

I’m merely pointing out that you are a (typically) incorrect GOP slug.

You made a glaringly erroneous and stupid claim/statement , and are now trying anything to worm/weasel your way out of it ; isn’t going to work……..

How’s that private school upbringing working out right about now for you , Forrest ?

OK, your on. For every similarity you can find to the GOP I’ll find two for the Obama gang.

I liken them more to fascists. Below are the 14 defining characteristics of fascism. Take a read through and tell me point by point which party fits. I’ll give you a hint, there is one party that fits these point to a tee.

    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
    4. Supremacy of the Military
    5. Rampant Sexism
    6. Controlled Mass Media
    7. Obsession with National Security
    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined
    9. Corporate Power is Protected
    10. Labor Power is Suppressed
    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
    14. Fraudulent Elections

  26. pags2 says:

Boehner would not change his statement. He, like many other opponents of the public option, keep repeating a big lie. Their theory is that most people are gullible to believe that lie. It may work for the Fox viewers but most people are not that stupid. The lies will continue because people do not hear the retractions because the liars use a different medium to take back their statements.

And it’s those like her and the morons in the GOP she (ignorantly , stupidly and blindly) supports , who claim progressives like myself are arrogant/haughty/elitist about my own schooling ; nothing tops the level of ignorance and hypocrisy that a GOP tool produces…….

  29. Mugsy says:

    “We’ve had several phone calls…”

LMAO. That’s Republican-speak for flooded with calls. :)

  30. Dave N says:

    1) Right-wing talk radio. Goebbels used radio to dispense his brand of propaganda, and to demonize those who didn’t agree with him/them. Parallel: Fox News, Limbaugh, Hannity, et. al.

2)Cult of the leader. Third Reich, Hitler. GOP, Reagan.

3)The Germans used the Reichstag fire of 1933 to suspend civil liberties. Bush used 9/11, and in a somewhat tangential extension, the Patriot Act.

4)Goebbels called people who didn’t agree with them “sub-human”. The GOP call their opponents “unpatriotic”.

5)Lack of Accountability. Hitler, as head of the Third Reich, blamed all of his troubles on military leaders who “let him down”. Republicans blame the econimic demise on Obama, when it was they who were in charge for 6 of the past 8 years in Congress, and 8 years in the White House.

    Ok, you owe me 10.

  31. delafield says:

Those people who visited Boner’s office should have screamed their heads off and scared the hell out Boner’s staff, “WE WANT SINGLE PAYER HEALTH CARE NOW!”

Why were they so polite to these lousy Republicans who don’t give a damn about the 65 million Americans who can’t afford health care?

  32. MapleStreet says:

    Boehner was actually right.

He said that he has never heard from “real americans” for the public option.

People for the public option are commie pinko liberal nazi fascist socialists. By definition not real americans.

  33. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

The Nazis were nationalists, first and foremost, who promoted some socialistic principles for the benefit of “the pure German race” only. “Socialist” was the label they used to lure in the less bigoted Germans who would not buy into the nationalist fervor. To say that the Nazis were truly socialists ignores the primary belief that underlied every policy they had and action they took, which were not socialistic by any modern acceptable definition of the term.

  34. belaccifer lacca says:

iRi… I’m more interested in your contention that there was zero evidence to support the contention that the majority favors a public option… in light of the three polls that were posted withing seconds of you making that absurd statement would you care to ‘go back’ and ‘restate that?

  35. A Patriot Acting says:

    PatrioticLiberalChristian says:
““Socialist” was the label they used to lure in the less bigoted Germans who would not buy into the nationalist fervor.”

Gee, kinda like the Repubs using labels like “The Patriot Act”, “The Protect America Act”, “compassionate conservatism”, “fiscal conservatism” to try to sell their bullshit.

  36. Intrepid says:

    17…

Many conservatives accuse Hitler of being a leftist, on the grounds that his party was named “National Socialist.” But socialism requires worker ownership and control of the means of production. In Nazi Germany, private capitalist individuals owned the means of production, and they in turn were frequently controlled by the Nazi party and state. True socialism does not advocate such economic dictatorship — it can only be democratic. Hitler’s other political beliefs place him almost always on the far right. He advocated racism over racial tolerance, eugenics over freedom of reproduction, merit over equality, competition over cooperation, power politics and militarism over pacifism, dictatorship over democracy, capitalism over Marxism, realism over idealism, nationalism over internationalism, exclusiveness over inclusiveness, common sense over theory or science, pragmatism over principle, and even held friendly relations with the Church, even though he was an atheist.

    Educate yourself home schooler.

You guys always try to excuse right wing extremism by claiming they were really left wingers! LOL! What a nut job! ;)

Considering there are only 14 points of Nazism and the GOP exhibits them all – this isn’t possible! But please, if you want to make up your own definitions to avoid the facts that’ll just prove the point of “the big lie” you Nazis are so famous for! LOL!

  45. just the bleepn facts says:

No the Nazis were right wing Fascists that hunted down and killed socialists. You can’t change that. But denying it proves you are a right wing extremist apologist!
