ThinkFast: October 16, 2009

Tyren

At a town hall event in New Orleans yesterday, 9-year old Tyren Scott asked President Obama, “Why do people hate you? They supposed to love you. God is love.” Obama responded, “If you were watching TV lately, it seems like everybody’s just getting mad all the time. And you know, I think that you’ve got to take it with a grain of salt. Some of it is just what’s called politics.” Watch the video here.

CNN has rejected an ad produced by America’s Voice and Media Matters that calls out the network for giving Lou Dobbs a prominent platform to spew anti-immigrant hate. “The most trusted name in news isn’t willing to critically examine one of its pre-eminent hosts,” said Eric Burns, president of Media Matters. “He isn’t worthy of the platform CNN gives him.”

Obama is facing criticism from his liberal allies for moving too slowly to fill positions on the federal court. “During his first nine months in office, Obama has won confirmation in the Democratic-controlled Senate for just three of his 23 nominations for federal judgeships, largely because Republicans have used anonymous holds and filibuster threats to slow the proceedings to a crawl.”

The House voted yesterday “to allow detainees being held at the Guantánamo Bay naval base in Cuba to be transferred to the United States, but only to stand trial.” Republicans tried to strip the measure from the overall Homeland Security Department appropriations bill but failed by 224 to 193.

Some rank-and-file congressional Democrats are expressing frustration about the influence of Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) in the health care reform debate. “This is the United States of America. This is not the United States of Maine,” said Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA). “I mean that one senator cannot hold the entire nation’s health care plan hostage.”

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) said yesterday that he believes that “every Democrat” in the Senate will end up supporting healthcare reform legislation. Baucus also said that “there will be at least one Republican and maybe a couple more who also will vote for it.”

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) blasted “charges by a group of Republican lawmakers that a Muslim activist group has planted interns on Capitol Hill in an effort to alter national security legislation.” “Numerous Muslim-American interns have served the House ably and they deserve our appreciation and respect, not attacks on their character or patriotism,” said Conyers in a statement.

After an investigation in to allegedly fraudulent ballots from Afghanistan’s disputed election, the U.N.-backed Electoral Complaints Commission has found that President Hamid Karzai’s portion of the vote has been reduced to about 47 percent, “an outcome that will trigger a runoff between him and his closest competitor.” Karzai’s ambassador to Washington said yesterday that a runoff is “likely.”

The Treasury Department’s “pay czar” Kenneth Feinberg “pushed outgoing Bank of America Corp. Chief Executive Kenneth D. Lewis into giving back about $1 million he received so far this year and forgoing the rest of his $1.5 million salary for 2009.” Feinberg reportedly decided that Lewis’ retirement benefits package and unvested stock worth at least $69.3 million “was large enough, and possibly too big.”

And finally: Yesterday, the national media tripped over themselves to provide live coverage of a runaway balloon that was supposedly carrying a young boy on-board. Falcon Henne — aka “balloon boy” — suggested to CNN last night that it was all “an elaborate attention-seeking stunt.” “We did this for the show,” Falcon said. The father — Richard Henne — dismissed allegations that the disappearance was staged on NBC’s Today show. During the live interview, “Falcon threw up into a container when his father” was answering the question.

I wonder the same thing that Tyren does. Obama handled it well, but kids are more in tune with what is happening than you think. Tyren’s mom seems to have it under control and is teaching him good values. That in itself, is a hopeful thing.

  2. Purple State says:

I didn’t follow a minute of the “Balloon Boy” adventures yesterday, and in retrospect I guess I am glad that I did not.

In even further retrospect, I’m hoping it was just a mistake and not the story of an American family getting too big a taste of instant fame.

even though he produces enough hot air daily to fill all the balloons on the planet, there is no balloon large enough to carry Plush Limpballs away

How interesting that just two items above this was an item about how anonymous holds are used to keep President Obama’s nominations for federal court from being confirmed.

There are a number of things about the way the system is set up that really suck. And it often results in nominations AND legislation getting held hostage.

  5. missmolly says:

Translation of CNN position: “As long as Lou Dobbs gets ratings, we don’t care what he says.”

Which is pretty much the attitude of any medium facilitating hate-spinners.

  6. missmolly says:

If a nine year old had posed that exact same question to President Bush (43) when he was in office, I wonder how he would have answered it.

Dubya probably wouldn’t have been able to wrap his head around the “why do people hate you?” part, since he had been kept so insulated he most likely wasn’t aware of it.

  7. missmolly says:

    Where is everybody today?

  8. tom says:

The double-edge sword here is that the Congress is so busy over the health care reform bill that the usual session recesses will be cancelled up to at least Thanksgiving and perhaps beyond. Therefore, any opportunity for recess appointments will be delayed until then.

“People hate me because they hate my freedoms”

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the excuse that we were attacked on September 11, 2001 because “terrorists hate us and they hate our freedoms”. And am very happy that we now have an administration that speaks to the American people as grown-ups.

That we currently have Lou Dobbs spewed hatred about illegal immigrants giving Americans leprosy, elected members of the legislature crippling the judicial system because they don’t like the sitting president, thoroughly incompetant leadership in the Senate so beholden to special interests and the notion of “bipartisanship” that they will cripple any meaningful effort to give Americans the basic human right of affordable healthcare…and a nation so captivated by Rush Limbaugh trying to buy a football team and the adventures of a boy in a balloon that no substantive debate about war, life, death, and policy can be carried out….that I think Obama may be vastly overrating our ability to function as grown-ups

and NOW wants to blame the family for creating a hoax…

    jeez… i’m sick too, falcon… that was disgusting…

sure, that is one weird family, but they did NOT cause the sensation the ensued… and to take the words of a SIX YEAR OLD CHILD as any kind of proof of “a show” is incredibly STOOPID.

but, considering today’s “media”, nothing surprises me…

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) said yesterday that he believes that “every Democrat” in the Senate will end up supporting healthcare reform legislation.

So he has all 57 democrats on board? what 3 Independent senators and we know one of them is not voting for it. so the sad part it seems is the snowe might be that 60th vote. Still should not mean she gets to negotiate.

  14. EnnuiDivine says:

    13. Pilotshark,

There are 58 Dems and 2 Indies. One Indie won’t back it, but Snow and Collins might. Ditto Voinivich. And possibly Lugar. Also, Baucus is an ass. Neither Nelson nor Landrieu will vote for the final bill, but I doubt either will filabuster.

“During his first nine months in office, Obama has won confirmation in the Democratic-controlled Senate for just three of his 23 nominations for federal judgeships, largely because Republicans have used anonymous holds and filibuster threats to slow the proceedings to a crawl.”

Think about this scenario: the Republican Party is down to ONE senator. Anonymous holds block every single nomination, preventing judgeships and cabinet posts from getting confirmed throughout an entire 4-year administration. It’s theoretically possible, unless the Senate changes its rules.

I knew from the get-go that there was nobody in that little balloon.

Seems to bit that this would have been the perfect opportunity for the President to remind little Tyren that, “God is love,” is a distinctly Christian concept and that in the US we have something called the, “…separation of church and state..,” which means that he – the President – would have to step out of his position as President to answer the question as a private citizen of the US and not as the President. (Did you secularist get offended by the cheap tricks of this Democratic president to appear religious?)

OTOH, the President could have just as accurately told little Tyren that we, the US, since we are not a Christian nation – according to the President, could not address such a remark as, “God is love.”

This was one cute, lame attempt to manipulate the populace with their beliefs even though it’s not clear that the President actually agrees with little Tryen or with the populace. (BHO has only gone to church three times since becoming POTUS.)

Yes, little Tyren, it’s only a coincidence that the most rabidly anti-Obama part of the U.S. are the former Confedrate States that fought a war to try to keep ownership of their African-American slaves about 145 years ago and within Obama’s lifetime had separate drinking fountains for the races and many of the people there would be enraged if Obama used the same water fountain as them.
Just a coincidence, Tyren, the real reason there are so many rabidly anti-Obama people in that part of the country is that there are so many people in that area of the country with advanced degrees in economics who really understand what’s going on.
You can see these economic experts at gatherings called ‘

So you are saying socialism is evil? Or calling someone an obvious socialist what they are is evil? Wake up.

  82. Levi the Oracle says:

    kwsventures,

I am saying you are a fascist, and you belong in a prison before you start killing people. You pose a clear and present danger to every America.

  83. belaccifer lacca says:

He is a socialist. Have you never listened to him? Why is everyone so afraid to admit it?

    Because it’s not true…

and believe me, I wish it were…

  84. EugeneDebs says:

Dr Venture. You ARE evil. You are also stupid beyond all reason. What part of ILLEGAL are you too stupid to understand? If its illegal it is NOT allowed you MORON. Only the stupidest people on EARTH are still even trying the Obama is a socialist BS. That WOULD be you. Stupid, stupid STUPID. Just kill yourself moron. ralph the wonder llama says:

    bitblt says:
At a town hall event in New Orleans yesterday, 9-year old Tyren Scott asked President Obama, “Why do people hate you? They supposed to love you. God is love.”

Seems to bit that this would have been the perfect opportunity for the President to remind little Tyren that, “God is love,” is a distinctly Christian concept

Seems to ralph that bit has little understanding of the other religions and faiths of this great world.

Believe that this quote is “distinctly” Christian: God is love.

From I John 4 in the New Testament at
    http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/r/rsv/rsv-idx?type=DIV1&byte=5513391

[14] And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world.
[15] Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
[16] So we know and believe the love God has for us.

God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
[17] In this is love perfected with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so are we in this world.
[18] There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love.
[19] We love, because he first loved us.

If you know of some other great religion of the world that can match this, now would be a good time to quote from the religion’s book of faith.

Seems to ralph that bit has no use for understanding other religions or faiths of this great world.

Exactly which other religion do you think matches this? You forgot to say.
