Kristol: ‘Thank God Most Of The Workforce Isn’t Unionized’

Earlier this week, hate radio host Rush Limbaugh was dropped from an investor group that was trying to purchase NFL’s St. Louis Rams franchise. Limbaugh’s involvement with the group sparked a week of controversy due to his history of racially divisive commentary. African-American NFL players said they “wouldn’t play” for Limbaugh’s team while the head of the NFL’s players union said he opposed Limbaugh’s bid because sports are meant to reject “discrimination and hatred.

On Fox News Sunday today, the “All-Stars” jumped to Limbaugh’s defense. NPR’s Juan Williams set up a false comparison, claiming that people don’t complain about MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann announcing football games even though he makes “divisive” statements about conservatives. The Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol used the NFL player’s union’s opposition to Limbaugh to attack unions in general, saying “thank God most of the workforce isn’t unionized”:

KRISTOL: Thank God most of business isn’t a monopoly. Thank God most of the workforce isn’t unionized. Why could this happen? This could happen because all the NFL players are in one union. Because all the NFL owners are in one club and pressure can be put on them. Thank God there’s more diversity in this country in terms of different industries and different businesses. And people can be controversial and can still find places that are willing to have them.

Watch it:

Kristol’s attack on unionization ignores the fact that unions are good for the American economy since unions help workers secure higher wages and greater benefits. Additionally, the collective bargaining of unions give workers the ability to shape the conditions of their employment, as the NFL players union successfully demonstrated.

According to Dan Lebowitz, executive director of the Center for Sports and Society at Northeastern University, the NFL has 78 percent African-American players. Because the player’s union has leverage, that means the players won’t have to work for someone who said just two years ago, “the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”

NPR’s Juan Williams set up a false comparison, claiming that people don’t complain about MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann announcing football games even though he makes “divisive” statements about conservatives.

Keith never tried to buy a football team and never made racially insensitive and insulting comments. He also never insulted the sport of football.

What these idiots don’t seem to understand is that Rush wasn’t kicked out because he was a conservative, he was kicked out for his RACIAL comments.

Also, the NFL donates more to republican politicians than to democratic ones, so I don’t see how that could possibly fit into their “anti-conservative” bias.

His pompous arrogance fits nicely with with his utter incompetence.

Little Billy CryStal was on quite a roll this morning. I think he is growing very desperate these days. After all, FoxSnooze is one of the few life-boats left for washed-up pundits like him. His PNAC has dried up and his magazine ad revenues are declining. Where is a brown-nose knee-jerk reactionary neo-conservative twit like him going to be able to make a living these days?

Why, he may even have to consider joining a union!

  11. tbone says:

Can someone tell me what exactly the union did? Didn’t they just voice their opinion on Limbaugh’s potential ownership? Since when is that a problem?

I guess that right to assemble only applies to churches and corporations. When workers assemble to advance their position it is somehow wrong.

  12. AIO says:

Just as soon as I begin having a shred of confidence in Juan, he starts Uncle Thommin’ again.

The NFL capitalists made a decision based on the bottom line: They think Rush would have damaged their product. The Players” Union has nothing to do with this. The owners are conservative in every sense of the word. They don’t want controversy, they don’t want surprises, they don’t want an owner who thinks he’s bigger than the game. they want a controlled message and product.

  26. Shayne says:

Why are Republicans always babbling about personal liberties until it goes against their agenda. Professional football players worked harder and are more talented than all the other guys who wanted to be professionals. But Kristol thinks they should be treated like peons and forced to work for somebody they hate. Then again he probably wishes black people were still slaves.

  27. eyesopen says:

Thank you William Kristol for once again confirming how cluelessly perverse you are. One must work long and hard at the the practice of self delusion to become so completely inured to the reality of the world, and Bill Kristol has never stinted in that work.

  28. dbadass says:

    Hi aaronk.
Was that 26 or 28 people you employed or was that supervised? How did that work again?

  29. pags2 says:

I think Kristol is just a great walking and talking advertisement for the Republican party. He turns off many middle class blue collar voters who form a substantial voting bloc. You add these voters to the ones that are horrified at the thought of Sarah Palin as the next presidential candidate and you have the makings for a landslide for the Dems. Kristol should keep talking on Fox because it is the perfect way for him to spread his bad advice to the Republicans. The party will keep shrinking until there are very few left, and Kristol will still be dispensing bad advice. This is a great strategy. At least for the Dems, it is great.

  35. Virtual Pebble says:

  36. Hoodathunk says:

And all those nasty legacy health insurance costs. They shouldn’t have made the health insurance companies jack their rates 400%. That was just evil of them.

  37. eyesopen says:

From the AFTRA site it looks like Fox splits hairs over who has to join the union more than most broadcasters. While most cover all on-air people Fox doesn’t seem to. And it appears they keep getting extensions on their contracts so they don’t have to negotiate proper terms. I think I’ll call AFTRA Monday and ask them why they are allowing this.

  46. evangenital says:

This raw, open racism must be challenged at every turn. Why Juan Williams would say what he did just boggles the mind. Limbaugh is a hate mongering racist who also happens to be a conservative on other issues. Olbermann is a liberal who goes after the likes of Limbaugh but without the hate — calling someone the worst person in the world is hardly hate speech when tied to an event as Olbermann does. What is the matter with Williams that he defends a hate mongering racist while going after someone for deploring Limbaugh’s racism. It smells like Rupert Murdoch had a little talk with Williams and told him to get on board. Williams obviously choose to remain Fox’s token minority.

The article states, “Kristol’s attack on unionization ignores the fact that unions are good for the American economy since unions help workers secure higher wages and greater benefits.”

Unions are either good or bad for the American economy depending on whether they move wages and benefits toward or away from an appropriate portion of revenues.

In the main, unions are beneficial because they give workers a unified voice versus a profit maximizing management who see wages and benefits as the easiest costs to minimize.

However, there are many examples of companies sans unions wherein employees benefit without unionization. It depends on whether management sees employees asw partners in the enterprise.

In the main, unions form when management sees employees as resources to be engaged at minimum total cost.

  86. Sven Ortmann says:

From a purely economical point of view unions can be good or bad. it’s not so much about being unionized or not – it’s about power balance.

Employers who are much more powerful than employees (the default case) achieve unfair conditions – an undesirable distortion of the market.

It’s on the other hand possible that unions become more powerful than employers – that’s disadvantageous as well.

    Power symmetry is desirable.
    —————————————————
From a politics point of view it’s just ridiculous how Republicans love independent unions as an expression and bulwark of freedom – in socialistic countries. They hate unions as socialistic cancer – in their own country (and if they oppose the plans of the U.S. government or U.S. corporations).

How shocking, teabagging anti-American faux hicks can’t even come up with an original talking point:

    IS KEITH OLBERMANN DIVISIVE?

Or can only conservatives be “divisive”?

Well: as I wrote last night, it is ironic that Keith Olbermann, who, unlike Rush, is actually a hatemonger, is a network commentator on NFL games. Apparently no one thinks Olbermann is too “divisive” to be associated with the league.

Which raises this thought: has any liberal ever been labeled “divisive”? I can’t recall a single instance. President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are trying to dismantle our health care system, an effort to which most Americans object and about which many millions care deeply. So, why are they not divisive? If that isn’t divisive, what is?

These thoughts are prompted by Olbermann’s latest outrage: another attack on Michelle Malkin, in which he accused Michelle of being a “fascist” and described her as “a big mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it.” It is impossible to imagine a conservative with a network television contract using language like that about a liberal woman. Impossible. It is, to begin with, misogynistic; it’s also aesthetically ridiculous. Agree with her or not, Michelle is a beautiful woman. One can only wonder what kind of twisted, sick psyche could produce this sort of venom. (Michelle writes about Olbermann’s bizarre outburst here.)

But let’s apply a much lower threshold: by what conceivable standard is Keith Olbermann not a divisive figure?

Rush Limbaugh’s opinions are based on hate, fear, hysteria, paranoia, lies, revised history and is the water carrier and leader of the republican party.

  155. The Moderate Squad says:

Kristol seems to think it’s OK for a business to fire you if you violate a “morals” clause in your contract, but the business owner himself should not be held to any moral accountability (and if blatant racism isn’t a moral issue, I don’t know what is). The NFL and the players decided – correctly – that Limbaugh is a stain on the brand and his inclusion in the league would hurt the NFL’s bottom line.

In addition to which, I don’t think Limbaugh could pass the NFL’s drug test, and you can’t expect the players to eschew chemicals (or buggery) when the leadership won’t.

  156. KayInMaine says:

Kristol is fine with CEO’s making $20,000,000/year in salary and getting an additional $10-50,000,000 in bonuses as long as the CEO fires off his or her employees to make sure a profit is shown to the Wall Street investors.

Think about it libs. Put down that joint and use what brain cells you have left.

People pay money to see the actors, and if an actor isn’t profitable, he doesn’t get that kind of money next time. Many CEOs, however, not only get huge salaries, but get more in severance pay and bonuses than most people earn in a lifetime, and after the banking and auto company meltdowns, you cannot possibly be serious that the CEOs deserve all that money. It’s simple – do well, get paid more, unless you are a captain of industry. Then you drive the company into the ground and still get paid as though you did something worthwhile.

He then got busted smuggling prescription drugs into the US.

  166. Levi the Oracle says:

Do you think that smoking marijuana is an escape from reality? How does smoking pot cause one to escape from reality. My understanding is that smoking pot gives you a feeling of mild euphoria, that is to say it makes you feel good.

Is feeling good an escape from reality? Taking a long, hot bath could be considered an escape from reality because it makes you feel good also.

The question is, why do you presume that smoking pot to escape reality is somehow worse than other ways in which people escape from reality. The answer is because you, and others like you, stand in judgement of others, despite the fact that the religion you hold so dear tells you not to do so.

It is not for you to judge that a pot smoker’s escape from reality is somehow worse than someone that escapes from reality is some other fashion.

What it boils down to is you are a bigot over smoking of pot. You have pre-judged the smoking of marijuana as something bad. A common name for that is prejudice. You are a hateful person.

OOPs, the WH didn’t say rush couldn’t play ball, the NFL did. I like how since the NFL doesn’t like Rush, and the WH doesn’t like rush they must be the same thing. nice logic there. Actually I haven’t heard anything from the WH at all about Rush (you’re just making up facts). If you’re so into debates try using fact instead of fiction.

Small businesses can’t meet payroll because their credit is being cut off.

congratulations. When the union drives your company to be no longer competitive or profitable and you are laid off, I hope you will also give the credit where it is properly due. Also, thanks for contributing to inflated wages and increased production costs that go into the products & services that the poor have a hard time affording now. I thought you were in favor of helping the poor?

  267. EugeneDebs says:

Aaron You are DISGUSTINGLY STUPID. ALL wealth is made by those who WORK. I dont see you snivelling about the millions paid in bonuses for high officials. You are a brainwashed moron. You clap about the excessess and snivel like a punk about a working man making enough to give his family a good life. YEAH its worth that much and MORE. The companies didnt get in trouble because they paid their workers too much. I make FAR more than thirty dollars an hour and my company has been in good financial health for more than a hundred and fifty years. What hurt the car companies is that while their competitors mainly Japan and Germany, which by the way MORON are ALSO UNION, HAVE national health insurance so THEY dont have to carry the cost of healthcare not ONLY for their workers but the added costs of the uninsured also those countries have REAL pensions so the companies do not have to shoulder THAT burden. My GOD you are so stupid, so gullible and SO brainwashed. You are such a good aparatchik for wealth that Stalin would have been proud to have a moron like you working for him

  268. KayInMaine says:

  274. EugeneDebs says:

aaron is SUCH a moron he buys the stupid propaganda that goods cost more ONLY because of wages. When its well known that things cost what companies can GET. So he wants all workers to get peanuts so that the RICH can pocket more and more money. My GOD you are stupid aaron

  275. EugeneDebs says:

I guess we should cut aaron some slack it must SUCK to know you are so stupid all you can do is regurgitate what Rush TOLD you to think. aaron is a moron is that really his fault?

  282. aaronk says:

By the way. I respect and encourage employee’s rights to organize into unions, and I understand the principle behind the intent. In a free society, people should certainly be able to pull together to gain leverage and ask for more money, benefits….etc. That doesn’t mean I think they are always great for the economy, nor do I think they are always bad for the economy. A blanket statement either way would be ignorant.

I’m guessing you don’t realize the conflict in your statements. I mean, we could “deflate” wages, but wouldn’t that just make more people poor?

Not that they aren’t already that is. Since the “inflated wages” you’re talking about are actually living wages, which unions help insist companies pay their employees, instead of trying to get away with slave labor – as most would do if it weren’t for labor watchdogs on their backs.
