Republican officials: DeMint is ‘watching our nation’s pennies’ — like a Jew would.

On Sunday in the Orangeburg, SC Times and Democrat newspaper, local Republican Party chairmen Edwin O. Merwin Jr. and James S. Ulmer Jr. wrote an editorial defending Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) from criticisms by Democrats. As the Huffington Post’s Rachel Weiner notes, “After a Democratic state senator wrote that DeMint didn’t bring enough money back to the state,” Merwin and Ulmer invoked an ethnic stereotype about Jewish people to defend DeMint’s penny-pinching:

There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves. By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation’s pennies and trying to preserve our country’s wealth and our economy’s viability to give all an opportunity to succeed.

The conservative Palmetto Scoop writes, “Umm… who in mainstream America thinks it’s a good idea to write something like that in a guest editorial? Especially in light of the racially-motivated attention garnered by South Carolina Republican activists over the past few months. It’s people like Ulmer and Merwin that make many folks fear for the future of the once Grand Ole Party.”

There’s another saying that goes like this: The GOP is full of racist idiots.

Every time you think the wingnuts have hit rock bottom they pull out the shovel and start digging. Just surprised that they didn’t add something to the effect of “and he counts real well just like an Asian!” Any bets on how long it takes for the excuses, justifications and campaign contributions to pour in?

On the other hand; a nation of 308 million has necessarily enough idiots to produce an endless stream of such reports if you look at every newspaper.

  37. missmolly says:

If this was, in fact, an old saying that genuinely had its roots in Jewish culture, I’d cut Merwin and Ulmer some slack.

However, when I googled the phrase, I didn’t find any sources that pointed to any Jewish roots in the saying. Many who used it would just say “the old adage” or “the old saying”, and those who did credit where they heard it usually just said “my father always told me,” or something just as generic.

When a source was cited, it almost always was Benjamin Franklin — a gentile.

Therefore, I can only assume that putting forth this ethnic stereotype was done only for the purpose of perpetuating an ethnic stereotype.

What’s interesting is that the Scots also have a reputation for frugality. So why not invoke the same ethnic stereotype about Scots instead of Jews, if an ethnic stereotype must be invoked at all?

Oh. Right. There are a lot of people in South Carolina who are of Scottish descent. They probably don’t like to be characterized as tightwads, even when it’s meant as a compliment. So it became necessary to insult the Jews, because they felt they couldn’t communicate without a stereotype???

  38. Marie says:

They are so accustomed to using stereotypical, ethnic, racist comments, they don’t even consider how offensive they are.

Ignorant bigotry is rampant in the GOP.

I was going to invoke Scrooge, because while the Scots have a reputation for frugality, there’s nothing like an Anglo-Saxon miser to really warm the cockles of a banker’s heart.

Well, speaking of gold, or koine, I think Merwin, Ulmer, and DeMento just have the Sidam touch. And one guy out of that crowd, Ulmer, has a name that ought to make him leery of popping off with anti-Semitic remarks. But then again, SC isn’t exactly on the map for enlightenment in ethnic relations.

Most jews are republicans anyway, I doubt they will care much.

Nothing can be further than the truth than the lie you just squeezed from your anal cyst little troll…

According to PEW RESEARCH, 78% of Jewish voted for John Kerry over Bush’s 22%.

65 to 74% of American Jews identify themselves as Democrats while only 11 to 21 percent of Jewish Americans identify themselves as Republicans.

Among Jewish males, 70% voted for Kerry while a paltry 28% voted for Bush. Among Jewish women, Kerry received 82% of the vote while Bush garnered only 16%.

  61. swordsbane says:

I can’t believe all the PC crap I’m reading here. You all do realize he was DEFENDING DeMint. I don’t get where the insult is here. If he had said “Jews are nice people. DeMint was just being nice.” no one would bat an eye. I admit that usually, when someone says or hints that Jews are good with money, it’s intended as a put-down, but that is clearly not what is happening here. He clearly thinks that this is a virtue, and that by extension, DeMint is a good guy for emulating them. So which is it? Is he insulting Jews? DeMint? People who aren’t good with money? Who exactly is he insulting and why is it an insult?

While you’re at it, how do you insult someone without knowing you’re doing it? Isn’t intent the whole point? If you don’t intend to insult someone the worst that you can be is wrong. Intent is EVERYTHING.

There are SO many examples of stupid Republicans, and the last thing I want to do is support one of those maggots. However, this is a waste of time.

  62. linzloo08 says:

Who else havent they alienated yet? They’ve already alienated blacks, women, other minorities, and now Jews. Too bad minorities are a faster-growing segment of the population, socially and politically, so all the Republican Party is doing is really shooting itself in the foot. Pretty soon, it will turn into a party thats only active in the southern and western states thats made up of mainly WASP men (’cause no free-thinking woman would ever be a part of such a sexist political party).

  63. estetik says:

What means this “apologized”? I would say, thank you. For nothing is as hidden as the danger of an American Krystalnacht estetik. Americans like scapegoats and it could soon be that the very Israel so many “Christian Zionists” hold high and holy gets blamed for the rising price of oil and the War on Terror burun estetigi. Why? Because it makes an easy deflection from the fact that our “shop until you drop” definition of “American gögüs büyütme ameliyatlari” is the sole source of our economic demise. Why point the finger at all of Wall Street (so much harder to get your hands around gögüs estetigi) than just at Madoff and “his type.” A recent trip way down South and into the Southwest made it clear that for a lot of folks there it was the Jews who shoved the “ni–ers” down our throats with civil rights gögüs küçültme ameliyatlari. Indeed, I heard, Rohm Emmanuel controls Obama, our “Muslim un-American” President vajina daraltma ameliyatlari. DON’T LOOK FOR LOGIC, the only issue is: people scapegoat because they can. As things get worse, angry uneducated people’s whose paleocortex comes to dominate their neocortex, all the progress we made as a nation will swept away by racial lazer epilasyon- ethnic violent surges showing that the scourge of Europe has been here waiting for its time. karin germe estetigi As American education gets dummer, the hate gets stronger and scapegoats are made to face evasion of self-responsibility. It’s the American Way, alas estetik. I have switched from being a Communist to a Blue Dog Democrat to a Republican to a Conservative in a manner of a few months. karin germe estetigi I am watching an economy in free fall, the White House’s enemy list (how Nixonion! saç ekimi), an administration that kisses terrorists and demonizes citizens, a government that is ruining our currency, trying to regulate carbon dioxide (aka plant food), and the list goes on and on.
