Husband joins Army so cancer-stricken wife can get health care.

One of the worst tragedies of the recession has been people losing their health insurance because they lost their job. Nearly 14,000 Americans lose their insurance every day. Wisconsin father Bill Caudle was laid off from his job at a plastics company in March 2009, which resulted in his family losing their employer-subsidized health care coverage. This put the family in an especially precarious position, because Bill’s wife, Michelle, was an ovarian cancer patient. After months of unsuccessfully looking for work, Caudle did the only thing he could to get his wife chemotherapy — he joined the Army:

billnmichelleBill needed a job. He needed health benefits. [...]

The Army would solve their health coverage problem. In years past he would have been too old, but in 2005 the age limit for enlistment was increased from 35 to 40, and a year later it was raised again to 42. The tradeoff would be his absence from home.

In the end, although he risked leaving Michelle to fight cancer on her own, Bill chose the Army. He signed on for a job as a signal support systems specialist, a soldier who works with communications equipment.

“Seventy percent of the reason is for the insurance,” said Bill’s mother, Marguerite Hemiller. “He told me, ‘I’ve always wanted to do something for my country and I have to help Michelle.’”

The United States is the only industrialized country in the world that does not guarentee comprehensive health coverage to all of its citizens. In the rest of the developed world, Bill would not have to leave his cancer-stricken wife behind and risk his own life in order to get her care.

Recruiters love them some recession, and when you throw health care that middle class Americans can’t afford, but desperately need, well ol’ Staff Sergeant Rekreuter just has a great day.

This sounds very familiar. I joined the Army in 1998. My wife and I had just had our first child, depleted our savings paying for the delivery, and had no health insurance. I got a $12,000 enlistment bonus for joining the infantry, and my family got Tricare insurance.

There was a war in progress in 98?

    – - I don’t think Americans have cornered the market on self-sacrifice so Caudle’s story is not unique in that sense. But he’s certainly a hero by anyone’s measure. His story might even bring tears to Glenn Beck.

  9. Marie says:

    Only in America!
What a Hobson’s choice for this family — join the military in order to get health care for your sick wife.
Reminds me of George Bush praising and boasting about the American opportunity to a single mom who needed to work 3 jobs.
No job = no insurance = no health care. Even if he could afford it, his wife is uninsurable.

  10. Jackie says:

The discision is already written as this soldier will learn his wife will not get help with her pre condition. Insurance Companies only cover the chosen few while denying others. As testified in the House Hearing woman will have to get the stop any child barring to get coverage and others will be asked to pay but when they get sick they will be denied. Some Americans have paid into insurance for over 45 years without serious medical problems but now their dropped or denied. It’s like paying insurance but never getting the service when needed.

No, I just meant joining the military for health benefits sounded familiar. And technically there is not a “war” in progress right now. OIF and OEF are both “Operations Other than War.”

I don’t know if any of the trolls would make fun of this couple (well, OK — they probably would), but I fully expect them to come here and claim that they’re “getting away with stealing” health care. And they won’t even realize how stupid they sound.

  13. SoapBox says:

Wow…almost like being black mailed…join the military and we’ll give you health care.

If our “no public option” government were to play it right, they could just raise the enlist age to 65ish, get people in by the millions, use them as they can and then eventually kick them out and let them get Medicare.

Oh ya…Rushpub would object to the “government handout”.

  14. Zooey says:

Michelle’s increased stress and anxiety over her husband’s military service will likely have a detrimental effect on her treatment outcome.

She could die alone here, or he could die alone in Iraq/Afghanistan.

    That’s a hell of a thing…

  15. Hoodathunk says:

I follow you on joining for the benifits. Thousands of kids did the same thing..Many for trying to get through college. They also were betrayed.

You call it what you want. I call it a war. Hard for me to let it go as anything less when a million people are dead.

Sorry to hear that you got caught in the trap. You were some of bush’s prime victims.

  18. Charmed says:

Since the Bush years, corporations have been targeting the sick, the aging, and the “over-paid”, using redeployment/lay-offs as the trigger to get rid of certain groups of employees.

One of the primary benefits of exporting jobs to China, India, and Mexico is that it allows corporations to legally (but immorally) thin their herds and pass their “profits” onto shareholders.

The fix has been in for several years now. But in the last year or so, all of these corporations (in collusion with the health insurance industry, for one) are accelerating their activities, more people are affected, and even more people are taking notice.

I believe we are quickly approaching a time when we (as a population) finally say, that’s it–we’ve had enough.

And the consequences could be shocking and deadly.

  19. RUCerious says:

Gotta wonder how long it will be until ‘debtor prisons’ offer the masses quality health care as an option. In exchange for their slave labor, of course.

  20. paleolib says:

Needless to say the Republicans think this is horrible. They want to get the government out of health care so this patriotic and loving husband could join the army, have to settle for crappy private sector insurance that wouldn’t cover his wife’s cancer because of the pre-existing condition exclusion and risk getting his fanny shot off in one of Chimpy’s wars. Thanks Michael Steele, now I understand completely!

first, I wish them both the best.

Second, it’s an American shame that a man has to put his life, and perhasps his ethics, on the line for healthcare for his family.

In America, you CAN get healthcare if you’re willing to go to a foreign country and kill people, but you CAN’T get healthcare for your wife’s “pre-existing” condition when you’re out of work.

We need to end this Employer-based healthcare and have a Universal Single Payer Healthcare System so that people won’t have to join the Army for healthcare.

This last paragraph is very telling of the sad state of American Healthcare.

“The United States is the only industrialized country in the world that does not guarentee comprehensive health coverage to all of its citizens. In the rest of the developed world, Bill would not have to leave his cancer-stricken wife behind and risk his own life in order to get her care.”

This is nonsense. Portability of health coverage is standard in countries like Germany, for example. Do you see a lot of Germans hanging out at the gasthaus because they don’t have to work for medical care? Do you think there are no other motivations for people to work? How about you? Would you quit your job just because you had free medical coverage?

I can’t tell you how many people I knew while I was serving who stayed in simply because they were afraid they wouldn’t find a job with benefits to cover the rest of their family. It’s completely blackmail and it goes against the very heart of the idea of a completely volunteer military.

I was just a little kid but I remember when the fear mongers said Medicare was going to destroy our country. I remember when they said civil rights would be the end of the US.

It is so sad that the US died in the 60’s.

  97. belaccifer lacca says:

Proof positive that 56% is well worth it. Thanks for debunking yourself!

I have a rock that prevents Tiger attacks, OS… how do I know?

Ever since I’ve had this rock I have not been attacked by a Tiger! Not even once!

I’ll sell you this rock for $1,000!

You’re ‘de-bunked’ so often it must start to seem like you’re going to summer camp on a Roller Coaster, huh?

  98. dbadass says:

the best you can muster is a vote down that will vanish shortly? Damn it why do I even bother with your sorry pussy ass. Let’s go. All you have to do is stand up and have a normal conversation. Why does that frighten you so?

China and India have significantly more people serving than the U.S. and the rest of the world.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures

The U.S. spends about the same amount as the rest of the world combined.

I agree with those that advocate a reduction in military spending.

Although the numbers of personnel in China is troubling, the U.S. spending is overkill (pun intended).

If conservatives are serious about spending cuts, they should start looking at the U.S. defense budget first.

  101. dbadass says:

    Olby Sucks:

    Bull.
This story makes it seem like there is something wrong with the U.S. healthcare system.

    And there is.

Is FOX News “an arm of the Republican Party” as White House Communications Director Anita Dunn says?

Democratic and Independent voters beg to differ. A national survey shows that 46% of those who watch FOX News “just about every day” are Democrats or Independents as are 50% of those who watch it “several times each week” or more.

Oh, like I’m gonna take this seriously…not. It’s a “poll” commissioned by the League of American Voters, done by the unknown Global Marketing Research Center (and I can’t even figure out how the Hell *this* site fits in), and was sent out by Dick Morris – with absolutely NO original source. All it is is “a recent poll says”. You can’t find the ACTUAL poll ANYWHERE.
