As part of the ongoing White House v. Fox News battle, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace complained yesterday that “as they’ve done every week since August, the White House refused to make any administration officials available to ‘FOX News Sunday.’” On Fox and Friends this morning, host Brian Kilmeade tried to paint a contrast between the Obama administration and the Bush administration, telling former Bush press secretary Dana Perino, “not only did you not go after” networks critical of Bush, “you gave them interviews, as did the president.” Perino corrected him, however, saying that “towards the end,” the Bush administration largely froze out MSNBC:
KILMEADE: And not only did you not go after them, you gave them interviews, as did the president.
DOOCY: Sure.
KILMEADE: Gave them all interviews. Read Ronald Reagan’s diaries…
PERINO: Towards the end we didn’t do a lot with MSNBC. That’s, that is the case.
Watch it:
Perino said that it would have been “a bridge too far” for her to “go after MSNBC” from the White House Briefing Room. But she seems to be forgetting the public letter that her White House colleague Ed Gillespie sent to NBC News President Steve Capus, in which Gillespie accused NBC and MSNBC of blurring the line between “news” and “opinion.” As ThinkProgress noted last week, Fox News cheered on Gillespie’s shot at NBC.
IOKYAR, right Dana?

October 19th, 2009 at 12:08 pmDana “Queen of Spin” Perino. Did I leave anything important out?
October 19th, 2009 at 12:10 pmI know Bush 41 recently criticized MSNBC, so let me use this as an opportunity to expand on another Bush 41 story.
On Friday I was fortunate enough to secure a couple of tickets (my wife knew a friend who had a friend) to attend President Obama’s event at Texas A&M here in College Station Texas.
It was sponsored by The Points of Light Foundation started by President Bush 41 to encourage and recognize volunteerism within the country. A&M as you know is the home of President Bush’s’ Library and the largest ROTC population after the service academy’s, and is the center of the most conservative segment of the states population.
Most of the audience was “hand selected” from around the country for those who are involved with the foundation, so I was more than a little concerned about the reception President Obama would receive. The fact that over 600 tickets were made available to A&M students and faculty didn’t help ease my concerns.
Secretary Bob Gates, who was President of A&M before becoming Secretary of Defense, was to there on stage along President Bush and President Obama. After the “preliminaries”, President Bush was introduced and he received a “10” (on a scale of 1-10), Secretary Gates was introduced and he also received a “10”…get ready for this. When President Obama was introduced by Bush 41, the place erupted and went nuts…he actually got an “11”. I was thankful and amazed but the applause went on and on and was full of enthusiasm. My wife and I were about 5 rows and center from the stage (GREAT SEATS). The President truly gives a great speech and evidenced by the frequent rounds of applause.
Here is another surprise. After the event the President, along with Bush and Gates visited the mess hall for the Corps of Cadets. The video showed the surprise and frenzy of enthusiasm that erupted after the Present entered the building. The secret service was working overtime trying to maintain order as the Cadets cheered and the President said he was going to “shake as many hand as possible”…WOW. After the event many Cadets said openly that they really appreciate Obama and have definitely changed their opinion of the man.
YES WE CAN…now lets get this health insurance thing done!!!!
October 19th, 2009 at 12:10 pmAnd Perino won’t be allowed back on Fox…

October 19th, 2009 at 12:10 pmDoes the well publicized jihad against the New York Times following reporting on illegal wire taps count or are we only talking about television networks pretending to be news outlets? Next we will probably hear that Obama is anti-press because he won’t give an interview to Wingnut Daily.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:11 pmThe whole White House v. FoxNews thing needs to end. It’s a manufactured controversy with no reedming qualities. Yes, FNC savaged Clinton and was Bush et.al.’s personal cheerleader, reaching millions of viewers daily. Still, a politician (and, in particular, a Presidential administration) cannot expect to fight a media outlet and win.
This is just bringing negative attention and distracting the media from the substantive policy debates it SHOULD be having.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:11 pmWell, you don’t want a network that might ask any ‘gotcha’ questions… like asking you to know about the ‘Cuban Missle Crisis,’ for instance…

October 19th, 2009 at 12:14 pmI think what people are missing here is not so much the blurring of news and opinion but the blurring of news and outright lies. I understand that Olbermann and Maddow have a perspective. But I would turn on them like the Balloon Boy’s family is being turned on if I thought for one second that they were deliberately deceiving me like FOX does to it’s viewer.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:14 pmAs if MSNBC is liberal…
…only Keith & Maddow are sorta liberal…
…Keith is, Maddow just seems to be smart….which is liberal to Conservatives.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:16 pmAnother example of the rightwingnuts short memory.. and a reminder of “Do what I say, not what I do” You know Rightwing Hypocrisy.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:18 pmAnd once again, the hypocrisy of the Reich Wing Faux News rears its ugly head…
October 19th, 2009 at 12:20 pmFaux Snooze is drawing their wagons into an increasingly tighter circle; soon, the only “guests” that will appear will be those who won’t go off-script (KKKarl Rove, Charles Krautenheimer, Billy Krystolballs, Michael What-Up Steele, etc.)…
October 19th, 2009 at 12:25 pmThrough all this tit-for-tat going on between the WH, FAUX News, former Administration officials, MSNBC…the point lost in the story is that FAUX News is not factual or honest in their “reporting”. MSNBC would not carry Bush’s water and were frozen out. Does this mean that the other networks WERE carrying Bush’s water? Sure sounds like it and can be easily proven by every network’s blind and undisclosed use of ex-military personnel shilling for the Pentagon’s Propoganda machine. Practically every major news network sat idly by as former President Bush and Cheney lied on a daily basis. Not about sex with interns but about threats to our national security. Lies that directly sent thousands of American soldiers to their graves based on outright lies and a neocon agenda. The lies from the former Administration were to cover criminal activities like illegal torture, the politicization of the Justice Dept, thousands of “missing” e-mails, pay-offs to our enemies…all lies that could and should have been easily debunked with some simple honest investigative reporting and honest journalism. Our so-called “liberal media” is and has always been a pure lie that has served the Right well for decades.
No one involved in this back and forth has claimed that the networks or on-air personalities who are accused of leaning left have used lies and distortions to push an agenda. This distinction goes to FAUX and has not been refuted as far as I know. They wear their lies proudly and will happily continue their distortion of facts and manipulative reporting in order to serve their political party. While those in the media who possess a liberal slant will continue to call out the lies, report the truth and be smeared by those on the Right as being part of the lunatic Left.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:26 pmIs is me, or did that Perino clip in the main text seem like it was more of an infomercial/cheerleading for Faux News than actual reporting of the news?
Then again, I’m not surprised.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:28 pmI find Chris Mathew’s interviews pretty close to the middle. He will get into someone when they say something idiotic, but otherwise, he tries to be in the middle.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:31 pmThis is just bringing negative attention and distracting the media from the substantive policy debates it SHOULD be having.
I think that you’re about 180 degrees off there, buckaroo. FoxSnooze itself is the source of negative attention and is distracting from the substantive policy debate.
That is exactly the White House message about Fox. It’s soundtrack is no different than listening to Chinless Mitch, Cryin’ Johnny Boehner, or Limpballs or Little Seanie Vanity for that matter.
The problem is that the rest of the media plays off Fox, fact-checks them and treats their news-pinions as if they were important. It is way past time to cross them off the list of legitimate news operations. Period.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:32 pmDana Perino has peroxide in her brain.
I wish I could brain bleach my memories of the Botch admin the way she bleaches her hair.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:34 pmThis is just more whining by Fox. They interjected themselves into the political process and are being treated as a political opponent. Fox wants to have it both ways by claiming they are a news organization while actively working in the political process to oppose Obama. Organizing partisan tea parties is not a part of a news organization. They have stepped over the line in reporting the news because they have become a part of the news.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:41 pmWhy did they freeze MSNBC out? Didn’t they want to know what Pat Buchanan was thinking?

October 19th, 2009 at 12:58 pmI once saw Keith Olbermann being interviewed. The interviewer asked about his criticism of Bush and other Republicans. He said, “I’m not liberal or conservative. Again, this is the rightie Repugs refusal to see the forest through the trees.
The point is, now listen closely here, Fox News is being hypocritical when they blast the Obama administration for “freezing out” Fox News, when their own on-air analyst admitted that the Bush 43 administration did basically the same thing with MSNBC.
It’s not defending the Bush administration; rather, it’s a shot at the GOP Mouthpiece, er, Faux News, er Snooze, (et. al) for crying “victim” when they’re part of the problem.

Sad isn’t it. Seems like Bush worship is a lifelong affliction.
Aaronk, no one is defending President Obama, unless you think Dana Perino is trying to defend him. Who has to defend the Obama administration for refusing to waste their time in alternate reality, trying to talk sense to Republican insurgents?
October 19th, 2009 at 1:05 pmPerino! Get back in line! None of that edging off toward the center. No Facts, damnit….
(snark)
October 19th, 2009 at 1:05 pmthey also announced that they will not be appearing on Fox News for the remainder of 2009.
Huh, is appearing on Fox News a requirement for this administration?
October 19th, 2009 at 1:06 pmI think errong wants to see the President, but he can’t bear to switch the channel from Fox News.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:08 pmaaronk says:
Additionally, this is another case of using the Bush administrations actions to defend Obama’s, even though you hate the Bush administrations’ actions to begin with. Weird.
Not quite right. MSNBC did not organize political activities to oppose Bush. Fox did and that is what makes the difference. If Fox had merely stuck with being just a propaganda machine, it is likely the White House would not have barred Fox.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:10 pmYou really don’t get it, do you?
It’s about the criticism (or lack of it) towards the administrations. Fox is criticizing the Obama administration for doing to them what they cheered the Bush administration doing to MSNBC (see the link in the last sentence of the story). Hypocritical.
It’s really not that difficult to understand.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:12 pmaaronk is the undisputed master of false equivalency.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:13 pmno, but it’s a blatant contradiction to Axelrod’s comments.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:39 pmaaronk says:
Um….how again is Fox News being hypocritical? Fox News didn’t freeze out MSNBC did they?
Because Fox had no problems with Bush doing this to MSNBC? Cry baby much aaron?
October 19th, 2009 at 1:42 pmaaronk says:
no, but it’s a blatant contradiction to Axelrod’s comments.
The contradiction is that Fox expects a Democratic whitehouse to behave differently when they aren’t the beneficiary. That’s consistent with you whiny conservatives though. When you are forced to take your own medicine you whine like a bunch of inbred children.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:44 pmaaronk says:
they also announced that they will not be appearing on Fox News for the remainder of 2009.
Nor should they. It isn’t a news organization, it’s a propaganda opinion station that has nothing but bile, lies and hate to spew towards the administration. When Fox learns to fact check and how to behave like journalists they should consider asking politely for the chance.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:45 pmno, but it’s a blatant contradiction to Axelrod’s comments.
Aide’s will appear on Fox’s shows… despite Fox’s bias.
They might not appear as soon or as often as you would like, but then, they aren’t required to…
No contradiction there…

October 19th, 2009 at 1:56 pmOh, they know how to fact check. They can’t avoid the facts if they don’t know what they are.

After all, she found one who married her; I know, I know, it’s not the same, but you’d think that if she can turn over enough rocks to find something stupid and disgusting which will still spend time with her, then with another few rocks, she ought to be able to find a sperm donor. Might even do it in person, with no fee for a house call.
Didn’t Perino get blindsided by the mortgage crash? Whatever happened to that? You know that neither the Shrub nor Darth Cheney was going to call in a chit to help her out (not high enough on the greasy pole, yanno).

AOL Users Poll:
An unscientific poll pushed to radical friends by radical friends? LOL!
According to the results of a 2006 study by the Project for Excellence in Journalism a survey of 547 journalists, found that FOX was most frequently cited by surveyed journalists as an outlet taking an ideological stance in its coverage, and most identified as advocating conservative political positions, with 56% of national journalists citing Fox News as being especially conservative in its coverage of news. Additionally FOX was viewed as having the highest profile as a conservative news organization; it was cited unprompted by 69% of national journalists.
That was 3 years ago, and it’s only gotten worse!
October 19th, 2009 at 8:07 pmThe Project on Excellence in Journalism report in 2006 showed that 68 percent of Fox cable stories contained personal opinions, as compared to MSNBC at 27 percent and CNN at 4 percent.
October 19th, 2009 at 8:07 pmThe documentary Outfoxed claims that FOX reporters and anchors use the traditional journalistic phrase “some people say” in a very clever way; instead of citing an anonymous source in order to advance a storyline, FOX personalities allegedly use the phrase to inject conservative opinion and commentary into reports.
October 19th, 2009 at 8:08 pmFox News executives exert a degree of editorial control over the content of their daily reporting. In the case of Fox News, some of this control comes in the form of daily memos issued by Fox News’ Vice President of News, John Moody. In the documentary Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism, former Fox News employees are interviewed to better understand the inner workings of Fox News. In memos from the documentary, Moody instructs employees on the approach to be taken on particular stories. Critics of Fox News claim that the instructions on many of the memos indicate a conservative bias. The Washington Post quoted Larry Johnson, a former part-time Fox News commentator, describing the Moody memos as “talking points instructing us what the themes are supposed to be, and God help you if you stray.“
October 19th, 2009 at 8:11 pmFormer Fox News producer Charlie Reina explained, “The roots of Fox News Channel’s day-to-day on-air bias are actual and direct. They come in the form of an executive memo distributed electronically each morning, addressing what stories will be covered and, often, suggesting how they should be covered. To the newsroom personnel responsible for the channel’s daytime programming, The Memo is the Bible. If, on any given day, you notice that the Fox anchors seem to be trying to drive a particular point home, you can bet The Memo is behind it.”
October 19th, 2009 at 8:12 pmPhotocopied memos from Fox News executive John Moody instructed the network’s on-air anchors and reporters to use positive language when discussing pro-life viewpoints, the Iraq war, and tax cuts, as well as requesting that the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal be put in context with the other violence in the area. Such memos were reproduced for the film Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism, which included Moody quotes such as, “The soldiers [seen on FOX in Iraq] in the foreground should be identified as ’sharpshooters,’ not ’snipers,’ which carries a negative connotation.”
October 19th, 2009 at 8:13 pmTwo days after the 2006 election, The Huffington Post reported they had acquired a copy of a leaked internal memo from Mr. Moody that recommended: “… let’s be on the lookout for any statements from the Iraqi insurgents, who must be thrilled at the prospect of a Dem-controlled congress.” Within hours of the memo’s publication, Fox News anchor Martha McCallum, went on-air on the program The Live Desk with reports of Iraqi insurgents cheering the firing of Donald Rumsfeld and the results of the 2006 Congressional election.
There is nothing “fair and balanced” about this Republican Propaganda Nazi Noise machine!

October 19th, 2009 at 9:50 pmThe big difference, Bush actually did interviews with MSNBC and didn’t have his staff go on weekly attacks against the network. Furthermore, I’m sure most liberals didn’t like the thought of their network being frozen out, it represented a point of view mixed with news.
