One of Steele’s ‘rules’ that immigrants need to follow to ‘get into the country’: ‘Have some apple pie.’
Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that in an interview with Univision, RNC Chairman Michael Steele defended the use of the pejorative term “illegal alien” to describe undocumented immigrants. Elsewhere in the interview, describing the GOP as “the party of assimilation,” Steele offered his advice for how immigrants should approach entering America:
STEELE: Number two, I think as I found with a lot of Hispanics, particularly those who have been her for several generations, they understand and respect the rule of law that is so important as a foundational principle of this country…I can sum it up for you this way, the party as I said is always the party, its been the party of assimilation and that is something that we believe in very firmly and basically what we should be saying is that there are rules that you need to get into the country, go the right door, fill out the right form, have some apple pie, hum a few bars of the star spangle banner and get to work, God bless you, and I think that that begins to set us on the right road to dealing with this issue.

Most of the people who come here to live (either legally or illegally) are very pro-United States. Why would they come here if they weren’t? They embrace the culture here — they watch television, they wear jeans, they eat at fast food places. And they work hard so their children will have a shot at a better life — just like so many other Americans.
But I think what Steele means by “assimilation” is that immigrants should abandon all traces of their culture and ethnicity when they enter. They should be able to speak English without a trace of an accent. They should not observe any holidays or customs of their former land. No Cinco de Mayo. No quinceaneras for their daughters. No Las Posadas at Christmas time. Although it’s OK for them to eat at Taco Bell, because that’s “American”. Oh, and anglicizing their last names would help, too.
Steele is a clueless jerk.

He routinely says some of the most assinine things I’ve ever heard and almost always comes across as a clueless buffoon. Yet, he’s on the world stage as one of the leaders of one of our predominant political parties. You have to wonder why the GOP allows him to retain his position. Does anyone know how much he’s paid? One dollar a year would be too much. If the Republicans see him as their answer to President Obama or think somehow he will help attract more African Americans to their party, they’re further off in left field than I thought.

This message resonates with a large majority of citizens. Most Americans do not favor mass deportations. However, they do want better border security and enforcement of labor laws against the employers of illegals. A large scale amnesty program will create a backlash against the Dems. Obama will have to settle for a limited amnesty, worker permits and some changes in law to make it easier for families to be reunited.
