Acknowledging that they lack the votes to block health care reform, Senate Republicans “have implemented a comprehensive political strategy to delay, define and derail.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Republicans are going to “insist” on several weeks of debate.
A new Harris Poll reports that Obama’s approval ratings have slipped for the third month in a row. Only 45 percent gave the president positive ratings. On the economy, Obama’s approval ratings slipped further to 40 percent.
White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett said that while President Obama supports the public option, he is “not demanding that it is in” the final health reform legislation. “He’s pushed for it, certainly, but he’s also realistic to say we’ve got to look at all options,” she reiterated.
In a closed-door speech to financial industry lobbyists in Washington in September, National Economic Council director Larry Summers “told the executives they were beneficiaries of an unprecedented government bailout and should brace for a regulatory overhaul.” He said the Obama administration “will not be lectured” by opponents of a proposed consumer-protection agency.
“The White House and congressional Democrats are working to marginalize the Chamber of Commerce” by going around the group and dealing with major CEOs directly. “There’s a strong, very conservative ideology there,” said House Financial Services Committee Chairman Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA). “They’re more like The Heritage Foundation then [sic] they are like an economic association.”
White House officials Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod yesterday criticized Wall Street’s exorbitant compensation packages and banks’ lobbying against financial regulation plans. Axelrod said the big financial firms could help by “increasing lending…and by standing down” from their lobbying efforts, while Emanuel called the bonus practices “very frustrating.”
The administration announced today that the Recovery Act has saved or created at least 250,000 education jobs across the country. “This is one more indication of how the Recovery Act is helping soften the blow of tough times, by keeping educators on the job and teachers in the classroom,” said Vice President Biden.
A new study by PayNet Inc finds that the recent wave of bankruptcies were largely unforeseen by lenders. “Approximately half the lenders never saw it coming,” PayNet President Bill Phelan said. “They were blindsided.”
While Obama administration officials have said that elements of the Afghan Taliban insurgency can be bought off, “many analysts, particularly in the CIA, do not believe that a substantial” number of Taliban fighters are reconcilable. ”As a general matter,” one offical said, “our view is that it would be a very difficult thing to accomplish,” adding that reconciliation prospects are “dim and grim.”
And finally: Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin has joined LinkedIn, the website known as the “Facebook for professionals.” Her resume lists “Vice Presidential Candidate” as one of her positions and “goes back to 1992 where she was the Council Member for the Wasilla City Council.” Her profile also says she is interested in “Job inquiries, expertise requests, business deals, reference requests, and getting back in touch.”

Republicans went for the short term gain of appealing to the ignorance, bigotry, and fearfulness of their base. In doing so, they gained enough to get in power and make off with our nation’s surplus revenue, but they did themselves long term, perhaps terminal, damage and are now suffering the consequences of their short-sightedness.
Good.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:05 amTwo reasons why Obamas poll numbers are down.
1) His weak support for a public option on health care.
2) Big bonuses going to wall street pigs and no real plan for jobs.

October 19th, 2009 at 9:11 amObama’s approval ratings are down due the fact that showing a lack of toughness. Sorry Mr. President, we want you to show full-throated support for a public option and we want criminals (Rove, Cheney, Bush, Wall Street Execs, etc.) made to answer for their actions.

‘Morning everyone.
It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that Obama’s poll numbers are down; this is what happens when the press gets too caught up with process stories and pays too little attention to substantive issues. If the administration plays its hand right and Congress does their part to ensure real healthcare reform, expect to see the president’s numbers back up around 50. Also, 250,000 education jobs saved or created? Wow. It’s a definite sign that the stimulus is doing…something. But it might be awhile longer before unemployment stops climbing (it will cross 10% by the end of the year, more than likely) and begins to drop.
The report by the CIA on Taliban fighters is pretty grim. Especially when you consider the events in Iran yesterday. Jundallah is Baloch, rather than Pashtun…but a destabilizing force with similar ideology to the Taliban in that region can be catastrophic. Neither Jundallah nor the Taliban can be defeated through military force alone. Afghanistan and the FATA might suffer from Balkanization, but, unlike al-Qaeda, they’re interested more in ethnic soverignty and less on global domination. Ditto Jundallah. The problem with both groups is that they tend to forge alliances with people and organizations whose goals are far more destructive.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:26 amOlbyLOON, you must rally be smarter then you have shown here right? I gave you two reasons why I think Obamas poll numbers are down, and it has nothing to do with him being a Democrat, black or personal likes or dislikes of the man himself.
On the other hand you come here and make personal smears, and just plain stupid comments and add nothing to the issues.
So, I guess I was wrong. You are as stupid as you sound.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:29 amIsn’t it funny how people like Olby completely lost the ability to discern a lie for 8 years, and now they see lies in every statement by the President?
October 19th, 2009 at 9:30 amMany bankruptcies blindsided the lenders who didn’t see them coming?
How stupid are they?
Or were they too blinded by greed to look at the facts?
This is the state of our nation today — people in high places have all reached their Peter Principle, and have placed others all the way down the corporate ladder who have also reached their Peter Principle. Like the PP notes, there they will remain — in the meanwhile, the rest of us suffer the consequences of their collective stupidity.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:30 amI don’t get why the Whitehouse thinks being soft on the Public Option helps them. Public support for it is growing exponentially and this statement seems geared to kick it in the groin. Maybe now that Obama’s poll numbers are sinking, he’ll start listening to his base again. Then again, maybe he’s thinking he’ll need all that Insurance industry cash to win his next election.

October 19th, 2009 at 9:33 amIf memory serves me, Obama said the stimulus package would provide some immediate relief (which it has) but that the full result of the recovery would take place over the course of two years.
It has been compared to an ocean liner — one is not capable of making a U-turn, but instead a gradual turn around.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:34 am¡¿Vice Presedential Candidate?! Is it common place to put jobs you applied for but didn´t get on your job resume? Can I do that?

October 19th, 2009 at 9:36 amWell said, Marie. And it’s just downright laughable when the GOP demands that unused stimulus money be used for tax cuts. They were pushing that back in April after declaring that the stimulus “failed”. Politics hacks. All of them. (Not every member of the GOP, just the hypocrites…which comprise about 98% of the GOP)
October 19th, 2009 at 9:38 amHey, I did that all the time. Which may explain why it took me over a year to find a job after college.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:39 amObama’s poll numbers are a reflection of his protecting Bush administration officials in court and his lack of action in restoring the constitutional rights of Americans while handing out billions to corporate bankers and offering a health bill designed by the insurers and pharmaceutical industry which will amount to a bonanza, 45 million new customers , for the insurance industry .
October 19th, 2009 at 9:40 amThis comes at a time when the average citizen can’t find employment ,has lost their home or seen their retirement funds die in the stock market.
Corporate America owns the US government .
The press/media has a responsibility to the public but they have abdicated their mission instead to focus on the controversies, the sensationalism, and the inane.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:41 amIf we had a press committed to informing the public, checking facts, and providing background, the nation would be better today. The decades-long process of media consolidation by corporations whose profit margin is their main goal has perversed journalism, and we suffer for it.
Media is not solely to blame, but who holds them to account? The industry owners have an agenda and the outlets over which to broadcast it.
What ever happen to the one or two page resumes>>>>>> Sarah went back to 1992,,, OH sorry thats right she probably go back that far to get a one page resume.

October 19th, 2009 at 9:43 amRecord-breaking gas price hike – 2008. check.
Followed by people not paying their credit cards. check.
Followed by a reduction in consumer spending. check.
Which led to a severe recession (always happens after a spike in energy prices). check.
Followed by businesses shedding jobs by the tens of thousands. check.
Accompanied by people not paying on their mortgages. check.
Followed by massive foreclosures. check.
And we taxpayers gave the financial industry $700,000,000,000.
Well, gee, since this recent wave of bankruptcies was unforeseen, maybe we should give them more money to make up for their losses…

October 19th, 2009 at 9:46 amNot supporting a public option will make Obama a 1 term President.
The same banks we gave billions & billions to a year ago are the health insurer’s biggest shareholders.
Bailing out banks was bad enough, but allowing health insurers to continue with no price caps and possibly mandating coverage will not sit well with the American people.
What would happen if everyone dropped their health insurance for a year?

October 19th, 2009 at 11:55 amWhite House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett said that while President Obama supports the public option, he is “not demanding that it is in” the final health reform legislation. “He’s pushed for it, certainly, but he’s also realistic to say we’ve got to look at all options,” she reiterated.
Sorry to say that President Obama is a puss.

October 19th, 2009 at 12:01 pmSo they aren’t tapping the phones and collecting the personal data of 10 of millions of innocent Americans ?
Millions of Iraqi haven’t been killed, maimed or refugeed in a war to provide permanent bases in Iraq on concocted evidence provided by torture and the Obama administration is not stopping trials from proceeding in court on this to protect the guilty ?
There was no secret health task force at the White House in the first classified six months and the health insurers didn’t craft the reform of their industry ?
The bankers who burned the American people didn’t profit handsomely from both the theft and the remedy ?
ect.

October 19th, 2009 at 12:03 pmMight you share the last administration which was okay by you? Thanks I am just looking for context.
Some people like troll wacking so much they post as both the troll and the wacker in order to spam the entire thread with obscenities , personal insults and thinly veiled threats none of which has anything to do with political inquiry , which is probably the point in the first place .
October 19th, 2009 at 12:06 pmfreeman, assuming for a moment that you really are concerned and you are not b.s.-ing, I would remind you that the war in Iraq is winding down and the administration is in the process of completely re-assessing our strategy in Afghanistan. U.S. contractors are now subject to Iraqi law when they’re working in Iraq. And, no, the health insurers didn’t craft the reform. A number of bills are going to the floor of the House and Senate, they will be debated, and what comes out will NOT be something the insurance industry wants. That’s why they spend over a million a day trying to influence votes. And the bankers won’t be getting any more stimulus money so I wouldn’t spend too much time worrying about that.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:07 pmTo mainly Freeman.. and his base.
No, the country isn’t ruled by the oligarchy / Illuminati/ corporations /lobbyists / media / IRS / or whatever conspiracy group of the week..
No, the parties are not ‘all the same’.. No, there is no secret group that in some back room pulls both the republican and democratic candidate from the same pool and then flips a coin to decide who get’s the (R) and who gets the (D)
I get so tired of futile, defeatist arguments that lead the intellectual discourse to a dead end.
No, the end is not nigh. America is not going to spontaneously implode. The dollar isn’t going to nose dive. The H1N1 virus wasn’t constructed in a secret lab.. the new world order isn’t going to put us in concentration camps.. nor is Obama.. though I think Beck would if he could..
No, Democracy isn’t a sham.. though it definitely has it’s faults..
I’m so tired of pessimism.. defeatism..cynicism.. – expressing such a pointless viewpoint is pointless.. and if anything makes me lose my hope for humanity it’s humanity’s lack of hope for humanity.

Who did that? Any chance of getting an answer to the favorable administration question?
WHAT LUX SAID!

October 19th, 2009 at 12:20 pmRoosevelt’s ?
Democratic ones somewhat , with Carters at the top of that list .However since Clinton the democrats have moved decidedly to the right and become more cozy with the bosses than the unions . Clinton was the most corporate friendly democratic administration to that point .
Obama talks the talk ,no doubt about it , especially while campaigning but ,according to most progressives ,continues to act like Bush 2 and is unwilling to relinquish changes made during the previous administration assumption of truly dictatorial powers .
Hence , the endless defence here of the very actions that were deemed reprehensible under the previous administration .
Domestic spying ,signing statements ,posse comitatus , permanent US military presence in Iraq ,indefinite detention .
ect .

October 19th, 2009 at 12:24 pm—
But I thought you decreed progressives idiots or was that fools? I appreciate your concerns but what concerns me is that when you announce yourself to be the only person whose opinions are not fooloish or idiotic you rule out any possibility of influencing others.
Sarah Palin has joined LinkedIn = Speaking engagements not going so well.
And if Obama would just tell the Repukes to phuckoff, I sure would be happy.
And why is Bush and Cheney STILL not on trial for WAR CRIMES?

I get so tired of futile, defeatist arguments that lead the intellectual discourse to a dead end.
.
None of my arguments lead to a dead end .
October 19th, 2009 at 12:27 pmNeo said at the end of one of the Matrix movies …” I’m not here to tell you how this ends , I’m here to tell you how it begins.”
Good line .
dbadass… I think Obama is being practical.. – though he wants a public option – and yes we control the house and senate – the votes truly aren’t there. Almost.. but it’s not a sure thing.. and the votes have to be there once it hits the floor. I blame moderate democrats more than anything. We can’t force them to vote a certain way.. as someone recently said..the whip is just a title.
one of my favorite one liners from I believe steven wright.. ‘you can lead a horse to water.. but you gotta be strong and determined to drown the bastard’..
October 19th, 2009 at 12:29 pmLux you don’t think along with rahm emmanuel that without corporate money no one gets elected to office ?
October 19th, 2009 at 12:31 pmReally .
well then Freeman.. cheer up mate – we’ve closed a dark chapter.. and the future is brighter than it’s been in decades!

I never said the parties are the same .
As to the second part the guys who flip the coin in a back room …. they’re called lobbyists and the people they work for are equal opportunity employers .
They’re influence over the 2 party system is more than obvious , whether that depresses you or not .
freeman says:

WTF? Could you POSSIBLY provide any real proof of this?
Some one call Protective Services… whatever sight grip he once had on reality is definitely slipping away…
October 19th, 2009 at 12:38 pmWhich freeman are you debating there DB me or the one you created who said what you are refuting ?

October 19th, 2009 at 12:42 pmNo, the end is not nigh. America is not going to spontaneously implode. The dollar isn’t going to nose dive. The H1N1 virus wasn’t constructed in a secret lab.. the new world order isn’t going to put us in concentration camps.. nor is Obama.. though I think Beck would if he could
Other the the dollars nose dive I never said any of that .
But you did say this
October 19th, 2009 at 12:43 pm“the one you created” which is so utterly untrue and not in keeping with my integrity that you might wanna quickly rethink that one.
# 72 and 64 are not my posts , one even has the link to my blog … nice touch .
October 19th, 2009 at 12:46 pmFreeman.. I think that without MONEY no one gets elected.. that’s just how it is – and that will never change. It’s not the perfect system.. but you also can’t just allow any a$$hole to try for a seat at the table.. there has to be some factor that limits the prospective candidates for every race..or else you’d have 252345 people running.. in our society, the factor that makes sure the candidate is serious – is $$$. You burn through a ton of it – which means you are invested in heavily in the gamble.
Yes, I think it would be great if corporations couldn’t affect a representative or candidate.. but on that same token.. you have to extrapolate the alternative.
If candidates only work off of investments from individuals.. that’s definitely going to dramatically reduce their funds – it also will further influence the system to only have candidates from rich (elite) families.. Also, if all campaign funds only came from individuals.. corporations could still manipulate that system as well. With elaborate transparency.. I suppose that could be eliminated as well..(doubtful.. actually) but then you have a system that every race is only run by the rich.. I’d figure.
I dunno.. I guess if you want to complain about the problem.. you have to imagine how things would be otherwise.. this system is easily corrupted.. but it functions. If we only work off of personal funds.. it wouldn’t be as corrupt..but it would be even more elitist.. wouldn’t it?
October 19th, 2009 at 12:47 pmSo how does it follow that I have anything to do with that. The problem I see is that you mistake your opinions for universal realities. I will accept a simple apology or I will expect that you offer some sort of documentation/evidences in support of this claim. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:49 pmYour debating the comment , halfway back up the thread thatI didn’t write looks a tad strange DB . Sorry .
October 19th, 2009 at 12:55 pmThan I will consider the matter resolved.
October 19th, 2009 at 12:57 pmbut anyway.. ya freeman – I know you didn’t say most of that.. I was reacting to the general doom and gloom of it all.. the collapse of the dollar.. and the whole ‘dems and reps are all the same anyway’… it wasn’t even entirely directed at you – I’m just tired of all media channels and comments being so bleak.. I just don’t think it’s all as bad as everyone makes it out to be.. and I think the spreading of further negativity is like buying into the FOX formula..
just think of it all as my own personal war on terror..
October 19th, 2009 at 1:05 pmLux , the only problem confronting the removal of money’s influence of our democracy is political will . I believe in democracy and to an great extent capitalism and believe that the corporations have done much good in their pursuit of profit and the free market .
October 19th, 2009 at 1:06 pmHowever I believe that most corporation actual legal charters ,to produce profit for their stock holders ,prevents them from acting truly ethically . This is not the type of individualism the founders had in mind when they crafted out democracy .
As evidence I present a nation which spends twice as much annually on it’s military budget as the next nearest 14 countries combined or better for decades but is the only Western nation without universal health care for it’s citizens .
Compassion for profit is BS . Sooner or later one must make a choice .
The matter isn’t cleared up till the guilty party steps or is pushed up … till then suspicion rules , besides DB I was in your area and never got invited to lunch .
October 19th, 2009 at 1:12 pmLunch is tough what with my day job. Today works as I took it off. Did you pick up any new accounts?
October 19th, 2009 at 1:28 pmFreeman: “This is not the type of individualism the founders had in mind…”
True. Our revolution began with an act of civil disobedience and vandalism against a large corporation getting special tax breaks from a dictatorial government.
October 19th, 2009 at 2:19 pmWanted:
One anti-healthcare wingnut to test a solution to healthcare reform.
I will give you $100 and a one-way ticket to the nearest third world country (I hear Bangladesh is HOT right now).
Go over there PERMANENTLY and let those of us who want to improve our healthcare system to do so without any “noise”!!
Unfortunately this will never happen, but a girl can dream, right?
October 19th, 2009 at 7:01 pmSAVE AMERICA, SLAP A WINGNUT!!
October 19th, 2009 at 7:08 pmA new Harris Poll reports that Obama’s approval ratings have slipped for the third month in a row. Only 45 percent gave the president positive ratings. On the economy, Obama’s approval ratings slipped further to 40 percent.
Better give the masses more stimulus money so those silly poll numbers go up. Spread the wealth… LMAO….
October 20th, 2009 at 1:07 pmMr DUKE
better go listen to Rush to find out what you think today. MY GOD you are an ignorant pile of dogshit and a stupid punkass troll
