Right Wing Activist Launches College Social Networking Site To ‘Smash Left-Wing Scum’ On Campus

John-Belushi---College-Poster-C12044867Campus Progress reports that Morton Blackwell, founder of the right-wing young adult organization, the Leadership Institute (LI), has launched a new social-networking site for young conservatives called CampusReform. The purpose of the site is to expose “bias” in universities “completely dominated by the left” and give students a forum to report and organize against professors perceived as abusive leftists. Blackwell described the motivation behind his ambitous project to the American Prospect:

I have had a long-term awareness of how the campuses have become left-wing indoctrination centers, and many, many students can go their entire college educations and never see any representations of conservative principles on their campuses — but they see innumerable amounts of propaganda both in campus curriculum and with speakers and in campus newspapers. It has always bugged me that conservatives have not done likewise.”

In other words, CampusReform’s young conservatives want to “smash left-wing scum,” as Tony Listi, a graduate of Texas A&M, wrote on the site. There is a CampusReform subsite for each of the 2,376 four-year colleges in the US which contains a blog, event listings, membership roster, and “access to a variety of powerful weapons to identify, expose, and combat leftist abuses on campus.” Those weapons consist of a system which allows students to review “biased” textbooks, rate faculty and “hold professors accountable,” report “leftist abuses,” and take a survey to record “specific injustices.” Currently, LI is offering a $100 prize each day in October for reporting “leftist abuse.”

Ken Johnson, a humanities professor at the University of Southern Indiana who was recently flagged by CampusReform as an academic who “continually degrades the Bible,” offers a seperate interpretation. “Students sometimes confuse the presentation of ideas” with his own, Professor Johnson told Campus Progress. “Some students, as soon as their thinking is challenged, the challenger becomes the evil one.”

LI has already bred conservative leaders like chief GOP strategist Karl Rove, Rep. Joe ‘You Lie’ Wilson (R-SC), and Grover Norquist, head of American’s For Tax Reform. CampusReform also proudly points out that James O’Keefe, the “filmmaker” who posed as the pimp that led to the ACORN scandal, attended ten different LI schools in addition to receiving funding from the Institute.

  3. DNFP says:

Because college campuses are for LEARNING, not sticking your head up your a$$ and crying about it.

  4. Zimzone says:

Fact #1: Truth has a liberal bias.

Fact #2: Conservatives cannot have an open mind because it’s closed.

Fact #3: Science is based upon truth & facts.

Fact #4: Conservatism is based upon greed, power and diminishing others’ success.

Fact #5: The ‘Leadership Institute’ has no leadership.

  5. dixie blood says:

If they don’t like their education then they should just drop out.

They aren’t learning anything anyway with a closed mind.

  6. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

I thought professors were there to teach the facts, how to have an open mind and to think for your self. I wasn’t aware they were there to teach conservative or progressive principals.

  7. WaltB says:

I don’t get this ‘boo-hoo-hoo’. There’s Young Republicans, dozens of conservative evangelical organizations (Campus Crusade, etc.). He want’s to “smash left wing scum”? Maybe that’s his problem in the first place. I don’t know of anyone coming up with a “smash right wing scum” ideology. Sounds more like one of the neo-subversives kind of rant.

  8. laprofesora says:

These people wear me out. I need to find a nice deserted island with no radio, TV or internet and spend my days perfecting my margaritas. They can spend their days spreading hate.

  9. P.D. says:

Yeah… Good luck with that. Young people are turning away from the Repug Party in droves. The more educated you are, the more likely you will vote Democratic or Independant. Hey, with leaders like Palin and Bachman, can you really be suprised college kids are turned off?

  10. paleolib says:

Something else for losers who can’t get a date to do on a Saturday night. Heck of a job Mortie!

  11. Pilotshark says:

So is he also going to do the same for Falwell university seeing they would not aloud a democrats to organize.

  12. EnnuiDivine says:

Because it’s never too early to become a souless corporate whore bereft of compassion and rational thought. Even the campus Republicans at my college were, by and large, rational human beings. At least, no more confused than the campus Dems or the campus Green/Socialist/Anarcho-Syndacal-leftist club (Yeah. RCORE was awesome)

The idea of turning the college experience into reactionary, mindless consumerism dedicated towards ignorance and hatered is wretched.

  13. Fred says:

Well, the drumbeat for violence just got louder.

Won’t be long now before these idiots cross the line that they can’t retreat from.

Dean Vernon Wormer: Greg, what is the worst organization on this campus?

Greg Marmalard: Well that would be hard to say, sir. They’re each outstanding in their own way.

Dean Vernon Wormer: Cut the horseshit, son. I’ve got their disciplinary files right here. Who dropped a whole truckload of fizzies into the swim meet? Who delivered the medical school cadavers to the alumni dinner? Every Halloween, the trees are filled with underwear. Every spring, the toilets explode.

Greg Marmalard: You’re talking about the Leadership Institute, sir.

Dean Vernon Wormer: Of course I’m talking about the Leadership Institute, you TWERP!

  17. tom says:

I am reminded of the guy who says “there are only two kinds of people . . . those who separate everything into two groups and those who don’t”.

These conservative campus wing-nuts belong to “those who do”. Theirs is the “you’re either with us or against us” school of thought made infamous by GDumbya.

The fact of life, however, is there are many more shades of color than just black and white. That ought to be the purpose of college — to challenge thinking and to come to new knowledge as a result.

Unfortunately, these brain-dead morons will always be with us. It’s good that they are an extreme minority, though.

  18. JustADumbFireman says:

Here’s the problem, Morty: if you have a functioning intellect, you tend not to be a conservative.

  19. P.D. says:

You know the expression ‘The Squeaky Wheel gets the Grease’? All Summer we have been subjected to the ‘Squeaky Wheels’. MSM tried their damnest to make people like this ‘Main Stream’ But it backfired. Just like these bellowing as*holes. Oh sure, they may scream the loudest, but that doesn’t make them the majority. In fact, these guys are the types who pray on intellectuals. That would make them bullies. No suprise there. Repugs will always be bullies.

If Blackwell does not like the way universities are teaching subjects, he can always go to one that suits his political ideas. There is BYU, a few in Texas and the South, Liberty, etc. What Blackwell is trying to do is intimidate professors with the group. I don’t think it is good sense to be involved with such a group when the professors are going to grade you. These kind of tactics are not going to work in the prestigious schools.

  27. "Bluto" Blutarsky says:

  33. House of Roberts says:

They won’t be able to withstand any actual intellectual scrutiny or exchange. In all my years of teaching, I only had one of these types, and he sneered and swaggered all the way, shouting down “Plato as puerile” and such malarkey. The other students complained to me to “Do something about him.” I told them that was their job: they had to raise their hands and ask questions, too, and argue with him when they found him incorrect in his increasingly silly commentary. After two class sessions like this, he slinked off and never showed his face again.

These guys are loonies, but above all- hypocrites. The number of “rightist abuses” (to flip their words)in the article are many, but they don’t even see it. And why do right-wing attacks always include such violent comments? They just can’t criticize without that violence that apparently means so much to them.

  47. slappy magoo says:

Leadership Institute mission statement, in a nutshell:

“I deserve to have my say! I deserve to speak my mind! You have to sit there and listen to what I have to say! No! I will not say what I want to say somewhere where people want to hear it! Nobody’s over there! I’m going to say it right here, in front of you! And you HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME! NO! You’re NOT allowed to interrupt me! This is my time! And you just have to listen to me until you agree with me or get fed up and leave, at which point, I WIN! YAY, ME! I will not be ignored! What have to say is important, you’re just too stupid to realize it! I’m right! You’re wrong! Sit down! Shut up! You’re an enemy of all that is right and true, and I should know because I am right and true! Where are you going? Fine! I’ll just go wherever you are and keep shouting at you until you admit that I’m right and I win and you lose and I rock and you suck!”

Conservatives: They’re not going to let a little thing like everyone thinking they’re a-holes stop them in their quest for world domination.

  48. dasm says:

Right-wingers will never understand that good universities promote critical thinking, understanding, research, and open-mindedness – all of which are contrary to the right-wingers’ agenda.

Every fascist political party in history share 14 common characteristics. #11 on the list is…

    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

The screaming of “thought police” would be deafening . . . but it’s OK to do this sort of thing if you’re a Young Republican, I suppose.

So lets see, even if this is true which I have no reason to believe. But giving him the benifit of the doubt I still don’t see this as such a great deal.

One hospital visit that costs 250,000 would still leave you holding the bag for:

    20% of 245,000 = 49,000

    5000 + 20% of 245,000= 54,000

    Now that’s a deal, not.

And aaronk thinks this is acceptable.

    Aaronk sez:

How many of your employees can afford that first $5,000 deductible if something major happens? Does the covered employee pay that, or do you?

They pay for it, and all of them can afford it.

Really? What do they do? I don’t know very many people who have an extra $5k lying around… what line of work are you in?

And how much is this coverage costing you and the employees en toto?

It costs me about $3,700 per month, so the remaining approximately $1,200 is covered by employees.

About $5K/mo for medical coverage…. how many employees does that cover?

    4??? 5??? 6??? 7???

You say the cost has gone down during the last year, due to a higher deductible, but that’s misleading. If, and when your employees use that coverage, it does cost THEM more. You just moved certain increased costs to THEIR side of the ledger.

    aaronk says:
I agree that students can argue their points and professors will engage them, but many kids of that age are very impressionable and they aren’t prone to argue points, rather to just listen and accept the professors opinions as fact.

If a student has not developed the ability for critical analysis by the time he/she reaches college, then no amount of schooling is going to help. Likewise for most other skills such as proficient reading and writing appropriate for a college level. “Impressionable” is a lot of hooey.

I’ll tell you this, aaronk… I went to school for playwritng and directing… I once wrote an entire ‘Director’s concept paper’ on ‘Hamlet’ for a Shakespeare class that took the position that Hamlet should be played as the villain of the piece.

Everything is fine in Denmark until he starts seeing ghosts and killing people.

An English professor read it and rejected it out of hand as ‘wrong and a misrepresentation of Shakespeare’s work.’ The only time that EVER happened to me in college.

She knew the correct answer and I was wrong and that was all there was to say about that, the ONLY time a professor TOLD me the answer and did not want to hear my arguments or have a discussion.

Thanks for the headsup Tom. All I can say about that is that, while I’m not here all the time, I’ve been around for a while, and if libs and progs and indies and mods don’t want to be accused of being idiots – you know, as conservatives are wont to do to us thinkin’ types – they won’t dismiss what someone writes just because it comes from a moniker similar to one they’ve come to loathe. because then it seems like they’re addressing the person making the point (with all inherent biases) and not the actual point.

After all, if an “Angelenos80″ or a “Ferd” started perusing the site and linking to stormfront, I’m sure neither angels81 nor fred would like getting blowback meant for those IDs.

If liberals are supposed to be SO well-educated, then it stands to reason that you KNOW HOW to READ. So know to whom you are speaking when you start spouting insta-hate. It can wind up making you look, forgive me for using such a small word, dumb.

Are you kidding me? (warning, that was rhetorical)

Smash education on (college and university) campus? (ditto)

These bastards started at the other end, where they get the most bang for the buck denied – elementary schools. Trash primary public education and it doesn’t matter how much money gets thrown or denied to secondary and tertiary. You won’t have people that can get over the threshold. There’s a reason, well, several reasons, for the insane growth in remedial English, Mathematics, etc, at the college freshman level. One big component in that growth is resource denial at the primary and secondary level, coupled with some other stupidities.

  228. WillWrite4Food says:

They must think that all college students are gullible sheep like they are! I’ve had liberal and conservative profs who I disagreed with but wanted to know their expert opinion so I could mull it over. Again, a lecture or speech is indoctrination, but the Pledge of Allegiance isn’t?

Now just one more reason i joined the Democratic Party: at least us libs know how to think for ourselves, not what we are told to think. And honestly, if a college student is dumb enough to think what they are told to think..A) They should not be in college now, since they’re just going to waste their money or their parents money or B). They should not be allowed to vote in any election..

This is a good example of why we should have i.q. tests for potential voters; those whose i.q. isn’t up to a certain minimum score will not be allowed to vote.
