South Carolina Republicans apologize for op-ed comparing DeMint to penny-pinching Jews.
Yesterday, two South Carolina Republican Party county chairmen came under fire for using an ethnic stereotype about Jews in their op-ed defending Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC). They noted a “saying” that “Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves” — which is what DeMint is doing by “watching our nation’s pennies.” The Republican Jewish Coalition has demanded an apology:
“Unbelievably, [Merwin and Ulmer] drew on an old and malignant stereotype of Jews as penny-pinchers in their attempt to praise DeMint’s efforts to look out for his constituents,” said RJC director Matthew Brooks in a prepared statement. “It is difficult to comprehend how men in positions of leadership in a state Republican Party could demonstrate such ignorance and insensitivity in the year 2009.”
Both the chairmen have now apologized. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) also denounced the remarks — which were meant to praise him — saying the comments were “thoughtless and hurtful.”

Ulmer, in his apology, still shows off his general cluelessness. When he said, “I meant absolutely nothing derogatory by the reference to a great and honorable people,” he still doesn’t get that the saying he used HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE JEWISH PEOPLE — WEALTHY OR NOT. The saying is believed to have come from Benjamin Franklin — a gentile — and has been used by people from all cultures and walks of life over the centuries.
The only reason he used it was because he was trying to come up with an image of tightfistedness and frugality, and the “skinflint Jew” stereotype fit the bill for him.

The fascist Republican Party has taken #3 to heights that no other fascist party has ever done. The hate and fear Republicans propagandize are now completely adaptable. They still hate all the traditional groups, such as African Americans and Jews, but they have expanded hate and fear to dozens of other groups.
Republicans have expressed hate for Hispanics, Socialists, Communists, Marxists, Liberals, Democrats, the poor, Muslims, pot smokers, woman, college professors, and the list goes on and on. They are even willing to start hating new groups on demand, as evidenced by the hate towards the French via “freedom fries”.
They seek unity via fear and hate and in that, they have some limited success. Unfortunately for Republicans, they have taken it to the extreme, placing themselves in the minority, and hating the majority.
Once it becomes clear to fascist Republicans that they will never again be a majority, they will use more violence in an attempt to regain political power.

No, it’s not. All you need to do is look at the support for Gov. Sanford and the public abuse afforded Senator Graham to understand how insensitive some South Carolinians can be.
Unfortunately, racism and anti-Semitism are alive and sick in the hearts and minds of many in the South, even among their leaders, who are elected by constituents.
But it’s changing. Senator Lindsey Graham is an example of the emerging thoughtfulness.
