Last night on Fox News, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich joined some of his colleagues on the fringe right and urged the GOP to make repealing health reform the “number one” campaign issue in 2010 and 2012:
GINGRICH: Let me make a straightforward promise. These bills can’t be implemented before 2013. If they pass a bill which is a disaster the number one campaign issue in 2010 and 2012 is going to be repeal the bill.
We repealed the catastrophic health legislation that was a disaster. We can repeal this monstrosity. If they’re determined to put something bad in the country, the country can rise up, defeat the people who do it and repeal it.
Watch it:
Gingrich is referring to the Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988 which was repealed a year after it passed because it raised seniors’ Medicare premiums disproportionately to pay for benefit expansions.
But the former House Speaker may have a tough time getting the “repeal” theme on current reform measures to stick. A new ABC/Washington Post poll out today finds that 57 percent of Americans support reform proposals currently before Congress that would include a government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurance to bring costs down — part of health care reform that Gingrich presumably feels would be a “disaster.” In fact, more Americans would rather have a bill with a public option that one “that is approved with support from Republicans in Congress.”
Gingrich has signed onto the right’s fringe movement, led by Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Tom Price (R-GA), and Joe Barton (R-TX), to repeal health care reform if it ultimately becomes law. “[A]fter we defund the left, we pass repealer bill after repealer bill after repealler bill,” Bachmann recently boasted.
Good luck with that, lizard brain
October 20th, 2009 at 1:03 pmWhether it`s war or health care,Newster and his commrades want to keep killing Americans(liberals)that is……….
October 20th, 2009 at 1:04 pmWhat a pathetic joke. If people wake up some morning and find that they are able to take advantage of a Medicare-like system, the last thing they’re going to do is complain, much less stage a revolt.

October 20th, 2009 at 1:09 pmUmmmm…Newtie? “The country” isn’t going to rise up and follow you anymore — “the country” is now in favor of comprehensive health care reform.
No country for old men, Newtie…time to hang ‘em up…
October 20th, 2009 at 1:09 pmI think passing a bill repealing Newt Gingrich might be unconstitutional (something about bills of attainder, ex post facto laws, and violating a few of the amendments)…but it would still be easier for us to do that….than for the reactionary right to “repeal” healthcare reform.
Sadly, Newt isn’t delusional. He knows how Congress works. And he knows how to rile up a base. If he thinks a successful healthcare bill with a public option will HURT the Dems in 2010, he’s gone from riling up the base to marching with them. Off a cliff. Into an ocean. Down a trench. And so on.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:10 pmShorter Ginrich: Special interest corpocommie rule!!
October 20th, 2009 at 1:10 pmNewt has lost his mind. Does he really think the 40 million uninsured Americans would vote for any legislator stupid enough to try and repeal a comprehensive health care system? And that’s just the uninsured, not the millions of people who have some kind of insurance that has turned them down for treatment or have lost a loved one who was turned down or had no insurance. What he proposes is political suicide.

Hey Newt how’s that catostrophic Contract With America going? What is he on his fourth wife by now?
Funny thing is the GOP and their industry buddies have allready pulled out all stops to try to block this Bill from lying commercials, phoney “grass roots” campaigns, millions upon millions spent on lobbying, 24/7 anti-reform propoganda on FAUX News and the American people STILL overwhelmingly support a public option. What kind of campaign does Newt think he can pull off after this passes and the health industry is forced to cut back on lobbying in order to maintain their overblown salaries? When millions of uninsured voters finally gain a chance to stay healthy are they going to support repeal and the Republican Party after they tried to block it? Newt’s just blowin’ hot air as usual.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:14 pmHis forehead is becoming abnormaly bulbous, soon it will explode.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:15 pmSpeaking of health care . . . has Gingrich ever been give a prescription for lithium carbonate or lamotrigine? Is he currently taking one of those drugs? Inquiring minds want to know.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:15 pmGingrich reminds me of the white Southern politicians who called on the country to “rise up” and “repeal” civil rights back in the 1960’s.
It didn’t get much traction. And Gingrich won’t, either. But he should find a soul mate in Michelle “defund the left and repeal bill after bill” Bachmann.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:16 pmAbsolutely correct — which explains why they’re working so hard to defeat, or at least weaken (”co-op”s, “trigger”s, “opt-out,” etcetcetc), the public option. They know that if they can get Congress to pass a bill that forces more Americans to buy insurance from the private sector, without a strong cost-control mechanism — can you say “Baucus?” Sure you can! — there would be a revolt, and justifiably so.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:16 pmNewt must be forgetting why they are a minority party now.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:16 pmNo. Repealing something for a special interest group is not democratic.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:17 pmGingrich has signed onto the right’s fringe movement, led by Reps.
Sorry, Ms Bachmann, but you would have to be in the majority in order to “pass” even one “repealer bill” (let alone the extra ones that would be a waste of time.) The country has already decided they don’t like the way your party does things. Learn to accept that and move on.

October 20th, 2009 at 1:19 pmAnd what do you think the insurance companies will do between now and the implementation of reform in 2013 to popularize the repeal?
Lower premiums? Waive pre-existing conditions to coverage? ANYTHING to help?
Good luck with that one, Neuter.

October 20th, 2009 at 1:20 pmSorry, I misquoted Bachmann (not that it matters much — drivel is drivel). What she actually said was “pass repealer bill after repealer bill after repealer bill” — not “repeal bill after bill.”
I got confused because “repealer bill” isn’t a phrase I use regularly.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:20 pmThat’s obvious from the last two elections.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:21 pmIf there was no debate this year over healthcare reform the GOP would still be grasping at straws and destined to lose more elections. They are well aware that if comprehensive reform passes they are toast in the next couple of election cycles. They are afraid and rightly so. If a public option is included in this Bill the Republicon Party might as well just pack it in as they have allready proven to American taxpayers that they don’t give a shit about the health of the Nation and the protection of it’s citizens. They only care about protecting big business and stopping our duly elected officials from enacting legislation that benefits the people for political gain. Party over Country every time folks!

Yep! it sure is buddy, say! how’s that circular firing squad of a republican party working out for you?
October 20th, 2009 at 1:25 pmGingrich is doing what he does best-throw bombs from the sidelines. Fortunately, the public opinion is in favor of the public option and they do not like the Republicans. Again, they are going to be running as the party of “No” without any plans of their own. That will not be enough to get a majority in the House or Senate. People want to know what you are for, not what you are against.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:25 pmWait a minute. I thought they were the “do nothing Congress”. What the Hell are they going to repeal? I wish the silly GOoPers would make up their minds.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:26 pmThe people are way too sick to rise up right now.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:27 pmVarious Republican senators are saying that people DON’T want health care reform. Now we have Newt, as timely and forward-thinking as ever, saying the voters need to get ready to REPEAL reform.
Which makes me think one thing…
The Republicans know a public option is coming. And it’s scaring them sh*tless. They know they can’t stop t from happening, all they can do is hope to “take it back” before it’s allowed to start actually working.
And that’s good news for everyone that wants real reform. Republicans fear it’s happening and they can’t stop it.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:28 pmThat’s funny.

October 20th, 2009 at 1:29 pmWhat the hell are you talking about. Are you just spouting crap in hopes of drawing a response?
It’s a position. If Democrats put together a healthcare program that people see as beneficial and affordable, Republicans will lose even more support by trying to repeal it.
If, however, the program is established and people subsequently find that the program doesn’t provide what was promised or is too expensive or not worth it; repeal would be appropriate and a winning strategy.
The repeal threat is actually good in that it serves as a motivation for our leadership to produce the best, most affordable plan they can; in order to withstand any future attempts at repeal.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:29 pmwishing to repeal something that you disagree with is evil!

October 20th, 2009 at 1:39 pmWrong again, b-kup. If any of these creeps had the interests of the country in their hearts they would go and knock on Nancy Pelosi’s door with ideas. Talking about repealing legislation that isn’t even final is asinine. Essentially it’s an admission that they have no role in any legislation as long as the Dems are in control. They might as well all go home and start campaigning now.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:41 pmThis is why we need to lobby to make sure the bill is a good one so that it stays popular and GOP opposition to it won’t help them in the elections.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:44 pmMaybe if Newt because President in 2012 or maybe Morning Joe the Health Care for Americans can be dropped and we can go back to giving Iraq and Afghanistan billions. I know the Banks and Contractors will be glad to get back to being paid free taxpayers money. Oh and the Churches will be back in business just in time for Jack Abramoff to get back to work on K Street. Invading countries will be started up again and you can bet Republicans will blame Obama/Biden.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:44 pmThis exactly why they shouldn’t wait until 2013. Once people get health coverage, they aren’t going to vote it away. Gingrich knows this, and it terrifies him.
October 20th, 2009 at 1:45 pmbackup says:
“If, however, the program is established and people subsequently find that the program doesn’t provide what was promised or is too expensive or not worth it; repeal would be appropriate and a winning strategy.”
As usual b-cup there is a fatal flaw in your reasoning. If a Bill passes and it looks like it won’t do enough to force true reform (bring down costs / insure more people) I don’t think the people will be looking to the Party of No to fix it. The Repubs (if they were in charge) would no doubt scrap the whole thing, enact tort reform and offer the insurance companies more tax breaks. They would force every American to buy insurance from the for-profits. The Republican Party has not done ONE thing in the last century or so that has benefitted the average American (at least without benefitting the upper class ten times more). They are incapable of leading and have proved it at every opportunity. If this piece of legislation is flawed I would predict a wave of MORE liberal and progressive candidates winning elections in the next few cycles. Republicans fixing healthcare legislation…now THAT’S funny!

October 20th, 2009 at 4:41 pmShame on most of you. Attacking the individual and not his/her position does not an argument make. Let’s review:
“A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent’s position. To “attack a straw man” is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by substituting a superficially similar proposition (the “straw man”), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.” –Straight from Wiki
An argument pro: I believe that once the people understand the legislation, they will return the majority party back to office and this issue will be mute.
An argument con: I believe that once the people understand the legislation, they will replace the majority party and this legislation will be repealed.
Coincidentally, repealing legislation/constitutional amendments has been a hallmark of our government…

Not by much. Gallup will not release the data behind their polls so we have no way of knowing what percentage of Democrats they polled vs. the percentage of Republicans. They were caught, during the Presidential Election, polling equal numbers of Democrats as Republicans even though at that time the Democrats had a 12 point advantage over Republicans. The only way you can know if a poll is really representative of the American public is if you can actually see the data they use to compose the poll. All polling outfits to that except for Gallup and Rasmussen. I wonder why?

Aaron is getting exactly what he wants – your ire, your bile, and your attention.
And you get exactly what YOU want out of the relationship, the opportunity to shout at someone you disagree with without having to have a physical confrontation, affording yourself the luxury to vent your spleen in a safe zone.
Aaron’s feelings about any given issue being discussed on this website is only as deep as knowing what to write that’ll press your buttons.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I’m telling you to stop. In a way, I find busting trolls to be a good exercise in flexing your mental muscles, knowing what to say when a REAL bona fide Aaron crosses your path. Knowing the arguments, and the counter arguments before you leave the hom just makes you that much better a debater in the real world, if you’re the sort that’s paying attention and not just cybershouting doen rhetoric to which you disagree. It even benefits the passive reader, absorbing the info for potential use later
But seriously, never, for a second, think that there’s some miracle phrase you or anyone else can utter that’ll make Aaron or any other troll stop. They’ll stop when they’re bored, or when their moms cut off their internet until they get a job.
Mock them, point out the flaws in their logic, make sure no one else takes them seriously. But while you’re at it make sure YOU don’t take them seriously either. Because I’ll guarantee you, they don’t take you seriously. At all.
October 20th, 2009 at 10:29 pmWow. This is fruckin’ HILARIOUS.
This means only one thing: Gingrich knows reform is coming. He’s already moving on to post-reform strategies.
Sick frucks.

I agree except I would say the same to their faces. I am not afraid of physical confrontations. Been there. Done that. I am not trying to convince anyone. Just let the trolls and wingnuts know that some progressives are tired of being punching bags and are ready to fight back
October 20th, 2009 at 11:11 pmIf I have to rise up from my two jobs, work 16 hours a day to “pay the banks” existance, it will be to strangle the life from you and your traitorous, prick, friends. Newty. I would love to shove you back under the rock you crawled out of.
Push me muddafugga, yeah, push me.
October 20th, 2009 at 11:20 pmGingrich’s threat to repeal the healthcare bill demonstrates his complete disregard for the public, the majority wanting a public option, and is typical of the demented right-wing collection of greedy basta*ds that have no qualms raping the people they are supposed to represent in favor of lining their pockets from insurance industry lobbyists. May they all burn in hell.
October 21st, 2009 at 12:50 pmThe Newt is SO concerned about health care that when his first wife was hospitalized and dying from cancer he divorced her.
Always wondered why he kept that nickname which is a salamander, just like Gingrich, himself!
October 21st, 2009 at 7:00 pmIf we get healthcare reform that makes it possible for you to afford to go to the doctor for the first time in 10 years, I want you to join with me in making it impossible for you to do that again.
