GOP Communications Arm In Action: Republican Senator Takes Up Fox News’ ‘Enemies List’ Attack On Obama

For the past couple of weeks, Fox News’ Sean Hannity has been aggressively pushing the talking point that the Obama White House is compiling an “enemies list.” That wild accusation came in response to Obama communications director Anita Dunn’s suggestion that Fox News operates as a “communications arm” of the GOP.

“I mean, is this an enemies list? Seems like it to me,” Hannity said on his program last Wednesday. “They want to come after the Fox News Channel,” the right-wing pundit complained. Almost every night in recent weeks, Hannity has badgered his guests, demanding that they take up his talking point. Last night, Liz Cheney took the bait:

HANNITY: It seems to me, it’s almost like an enemies list. Is that a fair description?

CHENEY: Well, uhh, yeah.

On Fox News Sunday this past weekend, Karl Rove propagated the talking point. “Let’s not kid ourselves — this is the White House engaging in its own version of a media enemies list,” Rove said.

Yesterday, Hannity won his biggest convert yet. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) took to the Senate floor and read Sean Hannity’s talking points into the congressional record:

ALEXANDER: I want to make what I hope will be a friendly suggestion to President Obama and his White House, and it is this: don’t create an enemies list. […]

So in conclusion Mr. President, here’s my point. These are unusually difficult times with plenty of forces encouraging us to disagree. Let’s not start calling people out and compiling an enemies list.

Watch a compilation:

The irony is rich, of course. In attempting to debunk Anita Dunn’s argument about Fox News, Sean Hannity has instead validated it — proving just how effective Fox News can serve as the “communications arm of the Republican Party.”

Update As ThinkProgress previously documented, Fox News hosts have also taken up and disseminated the GOP mantra, “Where are the jobs?

I’m willing to bet that Obama would LOVE to debate Cheney/Rove/Hannity/Beck/O’Reilly/et al… if he thought it would really move this healthcare thing forward.

Should we call those guys about doing a live debate on PBS?

  29. Rosencrantz says:

Uhmmmm…doesn’t O’Reilly have an enemies list? I list of people and organizations that he encourages his audience to boycott because he doesn’t like what they say? Doesn’t O’Reilly send goons to stalk these people in their private lives instead of inviting them on for interviews?

Doesn’t Beck have an list of “enemies” that he openly says should be poisoned or beaten to death with a shovel?

Doesn’t Fox have an enemies list which includes things like Acorn, NBC, CNN, homosexuals, seculars, muslims, foreigners, etc? People and groups it routinely parades out whenever it needs a scapegoat or someone to demonize?

Seems to me that if Fox was so opposed to enemies lists, they wouldn’t have anything to talk about.

No, the cannot be more creative because they have always go into reruns. You can add Reaganomics to the list of reruns. The problem with reruns is that you always know how it is going to end so there is no point in watching them.

  38. DarkKnight76 says:

RATINGS!!! Just because you’ve duped more people into watching you “news” channel, doesn’t mean you are practicing any kind of responsible journalism.

  39. Rosencrantz says:

Bush? Cheney? Those guys have been gone for almost a year now. Fact is your president is a coward and not willing to debate.

Last I checked, Obama is a public figure who has made a number of public appearances and speeches that the media, including Fox, is invited to cover. They can also debate and rebut his comments as they see fit. They are also invited to ask questions during question period and Fox has been called upon somewhat regularly during briefings.

If you’re view of cowardise is how willing someone is to debate…then why are you a Fox fan in the first place. Fox news routinely cuts the mic of anyone who says things they don’t like. Fox news and it’s figureheads like O’Reilly and Beck and Hannity flat out REFUSE to debate their opponents including Mediamatters and Olbermann if those debates aren’t totally under Fox’s control and conditions. Olberman has stated he will debate O’Reilly any day any time as long as it BOTH sides are allowed cameramen to tape the interview (to avoid misleading editing from one party) and as long as both sides get to air the debate. O’Reilly REFUSES. Hell, O’Reilly even refused to do an interview with Canadian Broadcaster CBC who wanted to have the same sort of debate on things he has said and covered. Again, he refused…but he always welcomes people to come on HIS show, with HIS rules, to “debate”….and then misleads after the fact with one-sided attacks, selective editing, etc.

FOX is the party who does NOT want a debate. They are perfectly comfortable throwing stones from their little glass house…just so long as nobody dares try to throw stones back.

Just goes to show how thin skinned reporters are.

  44. Bozo The Neoclown says:

“Is that why they get more views than any other cable news channel?”

  45. Rosencrantz says:

RATINGS!!! Just because you’ve duped more people into watching you “news” channel, doesn’t mean you are practicing any kind of responsible journalism.

Lol. I would add that on the health care issue, Limbaugh recently said on air that he doesn’t “believe anyone has ever died from lack of health insurance”. Well, what Rush choses to BELIEVE is irrelevant. It is a fact that people die all the time for lack of health insurance. Presenting your warped beliefs as if they were fact is idiotic, but the dittoheads will repeat it as fact anyway.
