Vitter dodges question about interracial marriage in Louisiana.

Although both Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) have publicly condemned Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell for refusing to issue marriage licenses to interracial couples, Sen. David Vitter (R) has stayed noticeably silent. (ThinkProgress contacted his office, but we did not receive a response.) Blogger-activist Mike Stark caught up with Vitter and asked him about his position. “Have you commented? What did you have to say about it?” asked Stark. Vitter simply smiled, stepped into the elevator, and allowed the doors to close. Watch it:

Update Greg Sargent finally received a response from Vitter's spokesman, but the senator still refuses to condemn Bardwell's actions: "First, Sen. Vitter thinks that all judges should follow the law as written and not make it up as they go along. Second, it would be amazing for anyone to do a story based on this fringe, left-wing political hack’s blog — he’s been handcuffed and detained in the past over his guerrilla tactics."

    – - Vitter has a call in to Rush and is still waiting for instructions on what to say.

He ran away!!? What a coward! And he’s leading in the friggin polls! WTF is wrong with the people in Louisiana?

  6. LeftisRight says:

I think he agrees with that unholy judge’s decision.

  7. tom says:

He’s awaiting Little Mikey Steele’s daily RNC Tip Sheet so that he knows how to respond (like that’s going to help him).

In the meantime, he’s being Palin-esque — “I’ll get back to ya on that”.

  8. EnnuiDivine says:

Nothing screams “Family Values!” like a sanctimonious hypocrite politician who enjoys the company of prostitutes and endorses anti-miscegenation laws.

And, yeah. He’ll win re-election. Now that SC doesn’t seem as hopeless (they’re starting impeachment proceedings, after all), LA now seems like the most backwards state in the country.

  9. Zimzone says:

    Diaper Dave.

    Lies & Bigger Lies.

Why would his opinion on anything matter?

  10. roxsteady says:

What I don’t get is why he’s even still in office. Prostitution is still illegal. Shouldn’t he be in jail right now, showering with his back to the wall? Also, why haven’t they fired this justice of the peace? He’s discriminating against people. It’s not his place to tell anyone they shouldn’t get married and this bullshit about him being concerned for the children is more BS! I guess he hasn’t heard yet but, our current president is biracial. Now, that’s a pretty impressive job for a person of mixed race. Strip this douchbag of his justice of the peace status and send his ass to the unemployment office. He should be fired!

  11. Lunaluz says:

Surprise, surprise.. another closet, err I mean elevator racist speaks. Be proud Louisiana.

  12. Frugalchariot says:

I have it on good authority that the first thing Vitter considers in any marriage or relationship question is whether or not there’s some hidden provision embedded somewhere that places arbitrary limits on diaper usage. Apparently he hasn’t looked closely enough at the current issue — yet — to speak intelligently (erm, freely?) on the matter.

  13. BuckarooBanzai says:

Actually that smile was just him making a poopie in his diaper…

  14. P.D. says:

roxs@10, The Repugs believe they are above the law. Just look and Ensign and Sanford. Not only were they busted, what they did WAS illegal under the law. Meanwhile, people had no problem throwing Spizter and McGreevey under the bus.

  15. Purple State says:

I wouldn’t say that his silence speaks volumes of the issue, but “no comment” in this case shouldn’t mean that he’s agreeing with Bardwell.

Let’s just keep an eye on this and file it under “Needs Answer At Some Point”.

  16. Fred says:

vitter is basically an out in the open racist. Nothing more can be taken from this.

Keep them on the ropes. Eventually they will trip on their own bigotry.

    Bravely bold Sir Robin
    Rode forth from Camelot.
He was not afraid to die,
    Oh brave Sir Robin.
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in nasty ways.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin.

He was not in the least bit scared
To be mashed into a pulp.
Or to have his eyes gouged out,
    And his elbows broken.
    To have his kneecaps split
    And his body burned away,
And his limbs all hacked and mangled
    Brave Sir Robin.

    His head smashed in
    And his heart cut out
    And his liver removed
    And his bowls unplugged
    And his nostrils raped
    And his bottom burnt off
    And his pen–

“That’s… that’s enough music for now lads,
    *** there’s dirty work afoot*** ???.”

    Brave Sir Robin ran away.
    (”No!”)
    Bravely ran away away.
    (”I didn’t!”)
When danger reared it’s ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
    (”no!”)
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
    (”I didn’t!”)
    And gallantly he chickened out.

****Bravely**** taking (”I never did!”) to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
    (”all lies!”)
Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Robin!
    (”I never!”)

  20. missmolly says:

I can think of a few possibilities for Vitter’s behavior:

    1. He owes Bardwell money.

    2. He agrees with Bardwell, but recognizes that it would be political suicide to say so.

    3. He has sold his soul to special interests, and now can’t even answer no-brainer questions without first getting marching orders from them.

    4. He is English language impaired (or deaf), and didn’t understand the question.

    5. Vitter truly believes his constituents agree with Bardwell, and he’s afraid of offending them.

    6. Bardwell has in his possession incriminating pictures or other evidence of Vitter’s sexcapades.

My money’s on number 3, although his behavior is going to suggest to many that number 2 is true. The media is hoping it’s number 6, because that’s great for ratings.

Although racism is clearly a latent, underlying issue still in the U.S., I am beginning to think that the more clear and present danger is “Beckism” and “Rushism” and “Seanism”.

I have no problem whatsoever with the supposed “War on Fox”. I think it has already forced them on the defensive, caused them to basically admit to their editorial/opinion slant and brought the obvious out in the open where it can be dealt with. At some point, I do hope that these other “isms” will be publicly discredited and discounted for what they are . . . hate-mongering, divisive, deceitful, pathetic piles of steaming crapola.

  24. Xisithrus says:

  25. shoeless says:

Vitter was in too much of a hurry to answer questions. Bardwell had just given him the phone number of a black prostitute who would change his diaper.

  26. Marie says:

    Sanctity of marriage?
    Fidelity?
This jerk made a fool of himself, exhibited his own lack of morality as well as his hypocrisy, humiliated his wife and still has the gall to stand in judgment of others, preferring not to oppose the ignorant and racist Bardwell.

  27. P.D. says:

Marie@26, Yeah, Vitter had no problem hauling his wife in front of the camera and share in his humilation. I don’t get these wives who stand by their sleazeball husbands, if it were me, I would have kicked him in the balls.

  28. Marie says:

Do you think answering the question the way you wanted would have helped the cause of peace and the furthering of nuclear disarmament? . or is it you – like the press – are just seeking some sort of political scandal? Would you sacrifice the goal of peace for some ideological argument?

I should be outraged, but sadly I am not. Nixon, Reagan, and more recently Rove, made the decision to lay down with the proverbial dogs that are racists and religious zealots and have become over-run with fleas.

One would think after the blanket rejections in 2006 and 2008 of all their party stands for that perhaps a new strategy would be a sound idea. But even when one of their own expresses a mainstream opinion they shout them down or run them out of the party. The world has passed these people by and as they retire/die, they will be replaced with more progressive representatives on the whole and we all will be better for it.

Save for the trolls, most everyone blogging here gets it.

    The big picture.

Today’s GOP “leaders” have their GOD in their pocket and only THEY know his will. Everyone else be damned.

And if that is not good enough, these same Christian-right GOP thugs are feverishly RE-WRITING their Bible that they pretend to hold so dear to rid it of “liberal tendencies and liberal bias”. Bye Bye Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. “We’re today’s GOP! Good Christians all! – just ask us! And you boys are toast”.

That is the big picture when it comes to the GOP.

Lesson: Self proclaimed Christian GOP “leaders” like Vitter
haven’t any shame what-so-ever. He/they have no sense of the abject hypocrisy they represent and absolutely no empathy for anyone who is not like them.

Because of their twisted and perverse understanding of GOD, they have the rational to commit acts of devastating depravity, hate, intolerance, hypocrisy and vice. All with a smarmy, greasy smile on their faces and a gun in their hands.

What remains is to ask how long it will take reasoned peoples everywhere to understand this?

  85. Sammiesoo says:

Thank you for the opportunity to comment,

I was saddened, hurt and above all, ‘embarrassed’ by Justice Bardwell’s understanding of what is acceptable and unacceptable. Never the less, I think I can understand what helped to put his thinking so far out of the ball park. As well, I fully understand that there’s going to be those out there who strongly disagree with what I’m about to say.

I think Justice Bardwell and I were raised to feel secure in the notion that we were ‘good people’; free of any racial prejudice what so ever. In Bardwell’s case the proof is shown in his totally unapologetic reasoning concerning interracial marriage, set side by side with his bold proclamation, “I have piles and piles of black friends.” (Associated Press quote)

I suspect that Bardwell like myself, was raised by parents who said one thing (all races are equal) and clearly exhibited another (not one real friend or acquaintance of another race to be seen). In other words, instructed in a very subtly, very subliminal form of racism.

So that would be the ‘parental’ conditioning; but as we all know, as a child grows up there are others in a position of trust who have an opportunity to ‘confirm’ or ‘challenge’ the teachings of the child’s parents. In my case the most influential would have to be the clergy and laity of the many different churches I attended. My father was Baptist, my mother was Catholic and I was encouraged to attend both of their churches and allowed to spend as much time as I cared to with any other recognized Christian base denomination. Thus during my adolescents, I was a ‘card carrying member’ of not only my parent’s churches but Methodist, Presbyterian and Lutheran as well (somehow missed Episcopalians).

And what ‘confirmation or ‘challenge’ of my parent’s subtle teachings of racial bias did I get from these varied denomination? My personal experience was: Seldom if ever did I see a person of another race at a religious service. I ‘never’ saw a person of another race at a social function such as a young people’s dance, pot luck dinner, bingo game or church picnic. Thus, everything I was subtly taught at home was just as subtly reinforced at every church I named above. “We’re all equal in God’s eyes”—yes, I heard that from one and all but when I looked around I only saw white faces. I see that as the subtly, subliminal reinforcement of my parent’s subtle, subliminal racism.

So then, as an adult do I still see all Christian denominations as allowing subtle racial prejudice to exist within their congregations? Again, using personal experience as a standard of measure, I would have to say the only internationally recognized religious organization that I have found to ‘openly insist’ that racial prejudice is totally unacceptable in the eyes of God and therefore totally unacceptable among His worshipers has been Jehovah’s Witnesses. You only have to attend one of their meetings or look through one of their magazines to see for yourself to what extent they truly practice interracial blending.

Race would never be a factor in accepting a marriage partner among Jehovah’s Witnesses. If the couple later chose to have children the parent’s, grandparents and congregation as well, would consider the children a wonderful blessing to be enjoyed by one and all.

So then, if you’d care to check yourself for the existence of the subtle, subliminal racial bias that Justice Bardwell is so obviously influenced by you might choose to ask yourself how happy you would or would not be with racially mixed grandchildren to cuddle. If in your heart of hearts you find ‘not happy’ as your honest answer, that would be a serious problem.
