Hoekstra campaigns against detention facility that Michiganders actually want.

bilde-12Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), who is currently running for governor, has been fighting the Obama administration over its plans to close Guantanamo Bay. The Michigan Republican, who believes waterboarding is legal, is concerned that terrorism suspects from Guantanamo “could be moved to Michigan.” Indeed, it has been rumored that the administration is considering moving some detainees to a maximum security facility in Standish, MI which is slated to shut down at the end of October. As Hoekstra raises unwarranted fears about the U.S.’s ability to maintain a secure facility, the residents of Standish aren’t buying it. The Standish City Council voted 6-0 this week in support of a resolution telling the administration to relocate detainees to their prison facility:

Mayor pro-tem and council member Jerry Nelson, who wrote the resolution, said its purpose was to signal to the federal government his town’s readiness to continue discussing the possibility of transferring prisoners — whether state, federal or international — to Standish.

“We’re leaving all doors open; we don’t want to take the Gitmo option away,” Nelson told POLITICO. “This letter says we’re open to anything that keeps the prison running: It could be a federal prison for Gitmo detainees, it could house prisoners from other states, it could be sold to private ownership. We’re keeping all options on the table.”

The residents of Standish want to protect against “the loss of the 350 jobs provided by the prison.”

I should think Hoekstra would be focused on unemployment in Michigan rather than Gitmo detainees. Unless, of course, he is using the detainees as a political issue so that voters are distracted from the jobs issue.

  2. The Shadow says:

I’ve got news for Mr. Hoeskstra, he’s lose the town of standish in the governors race which is normally 100 percent Republican. Why? Because I’m from Michigan and the prison is the only employer in town and everything else depends on it. If this idiot opposes this town’s effort to say it’s prison jobs, then he’s lose Standish because either they will vote against him or the it will be a ghost town. The local media has been reporting the fact that Standish will remain in name only because over 90 percent of the resident work for the Prison system in one way or another.

This show how stupid the idiot is, rather than support a town that has gone Republican for decades, he’d rather play politics with their lives. What will happen to Standish if he’s elected? I recently drove through the town, and it’s looking pretty rough right now. The town is divided over this issue, but they all have to depend on the Prison because before it came, Standish was just a few homes along a road to somewhere up noth.

I guess the terrorists won with these people that are terrified of detainees in their prisons. I thought the whole idea behind terrorist was just to ignore them and get on with your lives.

    Hi beefeater
Thanks for sharing what you “think”. Can I give you some fishing advice?

  8. pags2 says:

This is all about opposing Obama no matter what he does. Republicans just keep playing politics with every issue. I would bet that the 2010 elections are going to finish with Republicans having no gains and maybe even more losses in Congress. The voters are going to take out their wrath on the party of No just like they did when the Republicans shut down the federal government under Clinton.

  9. tom says:

The real conundrum for me is that the republicans are largely fish out of water — no public approval, no alternate ideas, no capacity to lead or legislate and no competence.

Yet, even though they are out of water, they persist in trying to swim upstream. How the heck does that work?

  10. kasinca says:

These ass clowns still think that they will win by opposing everything that the current administration does and using fear tactics. It seems they still haven’t realized that the public is more informed today than they were fifteen years ago. The rethugs still haven’t caught on to the information age and think that FAUX noise is the place everyone gets information. The GOP is a dead party walking.

Ralph, I would say when the “Avoided WWII Balsa Wood Cockpit Pilot” Reagan was elected. That showed the repugs that cowards who talk tough (but aren’t) could get elected.

These people are unlawfully detained, so why is there never a discussion about doing the only legal and right thing in this case and releasing everyone at Gitmo from custody?

Standing for something requires more thought than being opposed to ideas.

There comes a time when pragmatism overrules justice. Yes, these people ARE unlawfully detained and most are probably there do to mistaken identity or just plain bad luck. But there are also those like Khalid Sheihk Mohammed, Hambali, Ramzi Binalshibh, et.al who CANNOT be released. These people are directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, Indonesians, and others…release them and they’ll flee into the wind, only to be responsible for more attacks.

Beefeater, if we do away with constitutional rights like right to a fair trial, jury, presentation of evidence, defense, etc.——then YOU, or someone who believes as you, could be renditioned to a secret site, tortured and held there forever—-if we should ever have a socialistic/communist government———wait, we do now——-the Obama administration!!!!!!

And, Beefeater, I have talked to real Beefeaters at the Tower of London, and you, sir, are no Beefeater!

It amazes me that wingnuts and FAUX use communism and socialism as if they are one in the same. Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) is irrationally fearful and apprehensive about detainees that would be held in a Federal supermaximum security prison. Hoekstra doesn’t have what it takes to govern the State of Michigan. He’s too weak and timid.

  32. tanglewood says:

Hoekstra is another moron and a pathological liar—-he is up to his ass in what went on with the CIA for the last 8 years and he was their biggest cheerleader. If the people in Michigan are suffering now, they will know what real agony is if they elect this clown.

  33. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Pete Hoekstra has never given me a reason to respect him or his opinions. Personally, I consider him to be just one example of the many things wrong with our government.

I honestly can’t figure out why somebody would be afraid to have these foreign national “terrorists” housed in a nearby prison anyway. Is the idea that they will break out of prison and go rampaging around the countryside or something? Surely they’d be more likely to break out of prison and then attempt to flee the country.

  37. peterjkraus says:

Lordy, lordy, lord. Hoekstra represents an area that is dependent on a fresh batch of prisoners every now and then to feed itself. Is this the Soviet Union all over again? 1939 in the Gulags?

Hoekstra might want to pray harder for Obama to fail. Then he and his cronies can resume the interrupted Third-Worldization of this once promising nation. Prisons, hamburgers and bank scams: we’re great at that.
