Former Fox News contributor: I left the network because I was ‘uncomfortable’ with Glenn Beck.

Today on CNN’s Reliable Sources segment, Washington Post reporter Howie Kurtz hosted Jane Hall, associate professor in the School of Communication at American University, to discuss the Obama administration’s criticisms of Fox News. Hall was a contributor to the network for 11 years and a frequent guest on The O’Reilly Factor and Fox News Watch. Kurtz asked Hall why she left Fox and whether she felt like she was “being used to give Fox a certain degree of legitimacy.” Hall replied that part of the reason she left was because of how “scary” Glenn Beck is:

HALL: No, I didn’t. The reason I left was in part because they’ve had less debates than they used to. It is a fair point to say how much debate is there on MSNBC? How many Republican strategists? We have a bifurcation of the media.

KURTZ: Wait a second. The reason you left is because you feel they have less debate than they used to. In other words, it used to be Hannity and Colmes, now it’s just Hannity. It used to be Bernie and Jane. Now it’s just Bernie.

HALL: I think there’s less debate than there was. And I’m also, frankly, uncomfortable with Beck, who I think should be called out as somebody whose language is way over the top. And it’s scary.

KURTZ: Was that a factor in your decision to leave Fox?

HALL: Yes, it was.

Never mind that Joe Scarborough has his own show, and every time I turn on MSNBC they have racist Pat Buchanan up there spewing his venom. And Rachel has said on air that she has been trying to get Liz Cheney on to give her a chance to respond to their criticism. But no, you’re right. MSNBC never has any republicans on.

Or more so, maybe Glen Beck can explain how Mr. Steele is out

If you don’t like Beck threads, why do you comment on them? No one is forcing you to participate.

Personally I avoided commenting on health care insurance reform threads for some time. I prefer threads regarding the war crimes of Bush and Cheney. I admit, I lurked on the health care insurance reform threads and learned enough that I felt confident to comment.

You indicated you don’t watch Beck, so why do you feel confident enough to comment on the subject? Do you feel it is necessary to defend someone you don’t watch? Are you defending conservatism or the Republicans? Why are you here? What purpose do you serve?

Has CNN ever PROMOTED a pro-health care reform rally?

Has CNN ever PROMOTED a pro-gay marriage rally?

    I didn’t think so.

THAT is the difference between a “real” news organization and a fake one, between one that covers the news and one that makes the news.

I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that, and any of these so-called “objective” journalists like Howard Kurtz who can’t seem to see the difference are either completely stupid or completely disingenuous.

  50. Roland says:

It seems to me that all these people from CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC etc. who are racing to FOX’s defense are actually insulting their own journalistic integrity. What they’re saying, essentially, is that WE wouldn’t promote rallies because that’s not what journalists do, but we don’t mind if FOX does so while still calling itself “journalism.”

It’s pretty sad when they won’t even defend the integrity of their own profession.

I’m actually quite disappointed in the media’s continual CONSERVATIVE bias… something I’ve noticed for many months.. no matter whether it’s CNN, ABC, NBC or even C-SPAN I tend to see conservative wackos wherever I go – paraded as ‘constructive criticism’ of the president. Headlines like ‘is Obama tough enough?’, ‘Is Obama being indecisive?, ‘Is health reform failing?’, ‘Is the stimulus working?’, ‘Are the Democrats in for a beating?’, ‘Is the Obama honeymoon over?’……

Is this the so called ‘liberal bias?’ I’ve heard so much about… bull$hit… there’s no damn liberal bias.. the ‘liberal’ bias is that they only attack the presidency half as much as FOX does… Myself I’d like to see some decent news stories for a change… why is it that everyone jumps on the FOX bandwagon – continuing their talking points.. just like this one, ‘Has the war on Fox backfired on Obama?’… give me a fricken break! These types of titles are ‘leading the witness’.. you have implied the answer in the title.. they’ve taken their angle mind before the segment starts.. it’s bull, it’s not impartial – and even the so called ‘fair’ media actually has a CONSERVATIVE bias.. and I’m very tired of it.

Blech should be so lucky as to have a staffer who’d suck up to him. And Letterman has better writers and the advantage of a sense of the absurd, instead of just being fracking weird.

Blech has Letterman beat hands down on stupid cliches though, like the old “just wait ’til you see what’s behind the curtain, kiddies, no wait, maybe tomorrow” schtik. Blech makes Howdy Doody look like a genius and Alfred E. Neumann look like a statesman.

  65. okie dokie says:

    What a ridiculous debate.
Roger Ailes, the founding CEO of foxnews, was media consultant for Nixon, Reagan, H.W. Bush and Giuliani’s campaigns. The network was created as a vehicle for the republican party to influence the American public to favor their political agenda. For 13 years, their manipulation of facts, and strategies of brainwashing by way of paranoia, have been delivered in the sheep’s clothing of a 24/7 “fair and balanced” access to world events.
Objective journalists and honest holders of public office should not validate fox’s propaganda, or their deceptive news format facade, by appearing there, much less acknowledge it as a possibly objective source of information.

I didn’t choose my name. It was given to me by my parents before Olbermann was born. You, on the otherhand, chose “Beefeater” and you do not know what a Beefeater is. As I said before, go to the Hoekstra-Standish thread for the links.

  112. Quizmos says:

It is so great to see an administration with balls! That is the point here. The right screams foul by setting up the mainstream (corporate) media as a left leaning straw man, and thereby justifies anything and everything that it wants to say (no bars hold) as though defending America with a “fair and balanced”. American’s perceiving themselves as perverbial victims (especially since 911) act like “good Germans” and defend fascists like Beck as being legit.

Then they point to MSNBC like it is comparable to their antics. Give me a TV NEWS outlet that aires Mike Malloy, Bill Maher, Michael Moore, Stephen Cobert, and John Daily; and see if ABC wants to claim them as a sister news organization. That, or move Beck (who claims himself to be a clown) to Comedy Central.

Keith Olbermann doesn’t drive because of a loss of depth perception caused by a head injury. In 1980, he hit his head on the top of a subway door while running into the waiting car.

Don’t know if this is reliable it’s from IMDB.com, but I have also heard Keith talk about this injury in an interview. He wasn’t brain damaged as is mistakenly said by trolls and the like.

Ya, the Grumpy Old Perverts like to whine about “moral absolutes” while they spend their time on moral relativism and pettiness.

Thank you, har5125. That’s more helpful than what that idiot posted earlier. Appreciate the info.

    Quizmos says:

Even though MSNBC is “left” leaning, they do not organize political rallies against the administration as Fox did with the tea parties. Despite all the claims about the liberal media, none of the news organizations gets its talking points from a political party. Fox has promoted tea parties and gets its talking points from the Republican party.

Immagine failing to capitalize American, but remembering to captialize North Korea. What kind of American can’t remember to capitalize the name of his own country?

Beefeater you ignorant piece of filth my TOEJAM is more intellegent than you will EVER BE so STFU. You are far too stupid to be wasting the time of actual adults. You arent fit to lick Olbermans shower fungus

  121. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Beefeater,

You’ve been caught exaggerating and distorting. You must have something more useful to do with your time than to come to a liberal political blog and cast groundless aspersions.

Much as I hate to say it, if anyone here has brain damage, it’s probably you. You appear delusional.

    And hate-filled.

  122. EugeneDebs says:

Yeah beefy is ignorant, hatefilled, delusional, a punk. All that. Maggots look down on him

  123. Marie says:

Apparently we have a troll here who thinks that because Beck is a dangerous fomenter of hate and violence, not to mention outright lies, that makes Keith Olbermann fair game.
    Sorry – no contest.
    1) Keith Olbermann has often spoken of his visual problems as the reason why he does not drive a car.
    2) The troll is gathering his “facts” from undocumented, unsubstantiated, unproven hearsay accounts from others like himself who are desperate to retaliate against those who point out the fallacy and insanity of Glenn Beck.
    3) As for Olbermann’s prowess in the boudoir — how the hell would the troll know anything factual, except for a ginormous jump to a conclusion in his demented and delusional mind.

  125. Gregor Samsa says:

The reason I left was in part because they’ve had less debates than they used to.

What “debates” is this woman talking about?

She doesn’t really think that Hannity and Colmes were actually debating anything, does she?

On the other hand, it is mind blowing that even faithful ringhtwingers like her can no longer stand the stench coming out of FauxNews.

  126. Wayne A. Schneider says:

She doesn’t really think that Hannity and Colmes were actually debating anything, does she?

I hope not, Gregor, because as Colmes often said, “That’s not the format of our show.” Colmes was never there to “debate” Hannity (who would never have won anyway, if both of them were required to base their arguments in fact-based reality.) He was there so Hannity could look at him and say nasty, false things about liberals. And Colmes was required to take it.

Beck is only confirming what I knew in during the summer of 2006.

Glenn Beck, by all reliable accounts, is insane. Well, the character he plays on TV is insane.

Another “new” stupid troll? I knew that not going to church and not praying would bring results.

  131. wreckingcrew says:

ok..so a former employee..probably jaded for whatever reason..goes on a show for the network she now works for…and blast the competition..blasting the face of the network..and that is suppose to convince people beck is a loon how exactly???

  133. pete says:

She wasn’t trying to “convince people Beck is a loon”. She doesn’t need to because he does that all by himself. She was merely acknowledging that his widely accepted looniness makes her uncomfortable.

  134. labman57 says:

Glenn Beck picks up headlines about political statements, proposals, events, etc. and then rather than performing some basic journalistic investigating (determining the 5 W’s, story validity, etc.), he fills in the details with his own delusional fantasies and then proceeds to present them to his audience as fact.

Of course, Beck is on the record explaining his role in the world of cable news.  Because, in his words, he along with Hannity and O’Reilly are neither investigative reporters nor journalists (”I’m a commentator”), he implies that they are therefore not beholden to guidelines of journalistic integrity and ethics and are free to make crap up.  They couldn’t care less whether what they espouse is factually accurate.  All that matters is whether or not they can SELL it to their viewers and listeners.

If these 3 propaganda peddlers were required be truthful in their “commentaries”, they would be speechless.

  135. EugeneDebs says:

Well FranklinSmith If you think Fox is actually news and Beck reinforces your delusions then seek the help of a mental health professional. FAST.

  136. maxamillion says:

Ms. Hall was a kiss-ass suck up on the O’Reilly show. Bill pushed her arouns and got her to agree with just about every thing he said. Fox IS NOT a legit new station nor is it fair and balanced. Question, MSNBC has Joe and Mika, both conservative right-wingers, where is the left-wing show on Fox if their so Fair and Balanced???

  137. ThatsNotFunny says:

Am I the only one who heard the other guests try to stifle a giggle as Amanda Carpenter listed her first argument as “A” her second argument as “Two”?
