Gingrich Expresses Concern With Identifying Beck And Limbaugh As Leaders Of The GOP

coverLast week, Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) — the chairman of the House Republican Conference — defended the influence of right-wing talk shows over the Republican Party. Pence claimed that it’s “hogwash” to suggest that pundits like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck “only speak for a small group of activists.” In a similar vein, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) defended the influence of Limbaugh, Beck, and other commentators because, she claimed, they represent a “critical mass.”

Reflecting the emerging stranglehold over the Republican Party that Limbaugh and Beck now exert, the new cover of The Weekly Standard identifies Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin as the faces of the GOP (see image to the right). Yesterday morning on C-Span, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich expressed concern with the cover:

Well, I just think it’s interesting that two of the three people on the cover are talk radio hosts — Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. And they’re fine people, and they have big audiences, and that’s terrific. But you have a party that has Gov. Haley Barbour, it has Gov. Mitch Daniels, it has Gov. Tim Pawlenty. [...] You know, you can have a very, very intense movement of 20 percent. You can’t govern. To govern, you got to get 50 percent plus one after the recount.

Watch it:

Gingrich has been taking heat from right-wing activists for endorsing the Republican candidate in New York’s upcoming 23rd congressional district race. The right-wing base — i.e. tea party activists — are rallying behind Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman, who has earned the endorsement of Sarah Palin, Dick Armey, and Michele Bachmann, among others.

Gingrich’s comments reflect an ongoing tension in the Republican Party between their tea party activist base and those who want to embrace more moderate candidates. After Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said he didn’t want to belong to shrinking party full of “angry white guys,” Beck shot back that he’s “going to stick with the angry people…because they’re only angry about you.”

On PBS last Friday, conservative commentator David Brooks said “the Republican Party has a terrible problem of who its spokespeople are.” He expressed concern the influence of Beck and Limbaugh is “part of a larger problem” that the GOP has.

Update Also in the interview, Newt indicated he was interested in running for President in 2012.
Update On Saturday morning on Fox News, Gingrich ripped Hoffman’s leading supporters (like Palin) for trying to “impose national values on a local race.” He accused Hoffman’s endorsers of hypocrisy by not respecting state/local decisions. He then admonished his conservative opponents for wrecking the Republican Party:

If some people in the Republican Party want to go around the country purging everyone they disagree with, they’re going to rapidly make this a minority party for a generation and they’re going to guarantee the re-election of President Obama and they’re going to guarantee Nancy Pelosi stays as Speaker for the rest of her life.

You GOP morons enjoy the bed you’ve made for yourselves!

Some people in your party are just plain dumber than a sack of hair clippings.

Maintaining pride in the face of one’s ignorance is extremely ignoble.

  6. DRxJ says:

Well of course you have concern, when the chosen leaders of the GOP exude hate and bigotry.
    And when Oxybreath gets pwned!!!

  7. EnnuiDivine says:

Of COURSE an establishment pol like Gingrich is concerned about the influence of talkshow hosts and crazy bigots. Beck, Limbaugh, and Palin are free to express whatever views they want, whip enough enough hatred, and create enough frenzy to drive their listeners (further) insane with little reprocussion. Gingrich, as someone with an aspiring political career, knows he still has to play by certain rules. And, since he’s supposedly kicking off his presidential campaign after the 112th Congress is sworn in, he has to be very politic about his image.

Which really can’t get much more tained. I mean, c’mon, this is the same guy who divorced his wife while she was recovering from cancer surgery, all the while claiming to be a family values politician who believes the country should be ruled by “judeo”-Christian values. Limbaugh and Beck frighten Gingrich, because they are free in ways he is not.

And it wouldn’t surprise at all if Beck decided to run as an “Independent” in 2012. Oh, man. An Obama-Gingrich-Beck Presidential debate. Gingrich and Beck start screaming at each other about FEMA concentration camps and ACORN while Obama actually answers the question about job creation.

Personally, I’d rather see Speaker Kucinich. But that’s kind of a long shot, yah?

  10. raynman says:

Well, Newt, when you decided to get in bed with the rabid right wing to ’solidify’ the Republican base, this was the ultimate outcome that everyone in the Republican Party feared, that the rabid right wing would become THE defacto leadership of the Republican Party.

    You reap what you sow…

He won’t run, he can go on Fox and shoot his mouth off, but that is all he is going to do, and suck up a lot of GOP cash with his PAC.

    Hmmm.

Beck might tease his audience about running, but he’d never actually do it because even running for office let alone holding office demands taking responsibility and a degree of coherence. Besides, why would he take such a massive pay cut?

Never forget that hypocritical, anti-American, scumbag Gingrich’s witch hunt against Clinton is the single most important reason why we were attacked on 9/11. Thia ia classic example of the criminal blaming the victim.

Newtie is concerned that Limpballs and BeckyBoy are “speaking for the GnOPe party. The seeds for this sad state of affairs was largely sown by Newtie himself and his “Contract on America”. It was then that these rant-radio snake-oil salesmen first realized how gullible and foolish the right-wing base is.

Over the years, Limpballs, BeckyBoy, Little Seanie Vanity and the rest have morphed into charicatures of themselves . . . comic, short-hand versions of themselves packaged for easy consumption by the least-intelligent, most biased, most easily persuadable, frightened lemmings in the country.

Kucinich is a hard left liberal with real integrity. He is smart and principled. When he was mayor of Cleveland he stopped the privitization of the municipal power company and enraged the business community like he knew it would. They sent Cleveland into bankrupcy and their constant attacks denied him re-election but after a decade or so even THEY admitted it was the right move and the people of his district LOVE him to death so he doesnt HAVE to play any games he is just unbeatable there. Dennis main problem is he looks like one of the seven dwarfs and frankly in the age of television I cant see him getting elected to the White House.

Dennis Kucinich, 10th district of Ohio, first elected in 1996:

    Pro-Choice
    Vegan
    Voted Against Iraq War
    Proposed closing down Guantanamo
    Abolish death penalty
Lower drinking age to 18/voting age to 16
Instant runoff voting for all elections
    Decriminalize cannabis
    Ban handguns
    Extremely envrionmentally friendly
    Single payer healthcare
And introduced the bill to impeach Bush and Cheney

So, yeah. Little too progressive for the plains states and the deep south.

  33. EugeneDebs says:

The GOP is lucky they have been able to dance on this razors edge for so long. It was always risky and tricky to throw red meat to the troglydites and get them all lathered up while denying them the power in the party. At some point they HAD to get tired of being USED and nothing else. For a couple of decades they have done the wink and nod thing with people like Coulter and Limbaugh. They express a bit of condescending criticism of their divisive hateful rhetoric while taking FULL advantage of it. The fragility of that tactic was always apparant. NOW Limbaugh at least wont put up with it anymore. The GOP now has to decide are they the party of hatefulness, denial of reality, racism and lies or are they going to come up with some ideas and principles. Either they cut the Limbaughs, Coulters and Becks off at the knees and show they are reasoned adults or they embrace the horror. At this point I think they dont believe they can win WITHOUT turning out the neandrathals

  37. EugeneDebs says:

Ennui he is also a deeply religious man who GETS the idea of a seperation of Church and State. I actually think a hardcore liberal CAN be sold to the plains states with a populist message IF the Democratic party finds a spine and SUPPORTS them fully. Dennis however isnt TV friendly. The guy may have to be a Fiengold. I think the idea America wont elect someone who is truly liberal is that kind of conventional wisdom that everyone hears but really isnt based on anything OTHER than everyone hears it. America doesnt mind electing REALLY far RIGHT candidates. I think they are tired of THAT and want a change. I always thought Americans want politicians to be the guy who takes care of things the way a mechanic takes care of their car. They dont want to GET deeply into the nuts and bolts of the policy issues. They want to know you CARE about your issues and are willing to fight. Then its well we tried THOSE guys, it didnt work, lets try THESE guys. The BIGGEST hurdle electing a TRUE liberal isnt convincing the people. Look at how well the message of a change worked. The biggest hurdle is beating that conventional wisdom which will be ridden HARD by the MEDIA

I also note that he says of Beck and Rush “they’re fine people“, so he’s covering his ass by kissing theirs.

Ergo he tacitly concedes that they are the closest thing to leaders that the GOP has.

Ah, well, I guess they’re forced to depend on it for a national electoral victory, being a shrinking minority party and all. After all, recounts can be stopped by SCOTUS if they look like they may not go your way, right?

A conservative would not allow the government to police the private practices of consenting adults. A conservative would respect the sanctity of marriage. A conservative would never have supported a federal law overturning a state court that decided to uphold the considered decision made by the husband of a brain dead wife to allow her to die in private with dignity. The Republican Congressmen and the Republican President denied Terri Schiavo the basic human rights a true conservative would have fought to protect. How can true conservatives support spending taxpayer dollars to enforce the puritanical laws the Republican Party seeks to enact?

You need accompaniment for a congressional campaign swing? Was Armey’s hand up Hoffman’s back?

And yes, regional issues are indeed issues that should be addressed in a congressional campaign, you ideologist nit-wit..

But, wouldn’t that be some kind of entertaining campaign when the Dems started showing clips of the cra-a-a-zy rants and antics from his TV show. Those commercials would get better ratings than NCIS.

Condemn it? Certainly not. The Newtster wants Republipimps to run in every district. But especially in that upstate NY district that is about to have a blowout between a Republipimp and a Conservaturd which will probably fracture the right and put a Democrat in office in that district for the first time since the Civil War.

Of course, Newt is just getting ahead of himself. He’s trying to pick up the pieces of the Republipimp before he even knows how much worse the fracturing is going to be. He sees it falling to pieces before his eyes and can’t do squat, because Pudge Blimpo and Glenda Blech have more control of the party base than any of the pols do.

And he’s up against Rupert “Murder” Murdoch and Roger Ailes who are determined to use Fux Noise to ramrod the nomination of Sarahcuda for President and all the other Republipimp and right wing politics be damned. They want the top office as prize and screw the rest of it.
