Will the RNC apologize for racist Facebook photo?

Since Oct. 20, the Republican National Committee’s Facebook page has had a picture of President Obama with a caption reading “Miscegenation is a crime against American values”:

RNC Facebook Picture

As Raw Story notes, the RNC finally took the photo down today, after readers at Democratic Underground first began discussing it on Sunday. While it’s likely that the RNC “wasn’t aware the racist photo was on their page and it wasn’t produced or posted by anyone at the RNC,” the group had attacked MoveOn.org for a similar incident in 2004. As Chris Harris at Media Matters Action Network notes, when “a web user posted a self-produced web video that compared President Bush to Hitler as part of a MoveOn.org video contest, the RNC acted as if the video had been produced by MoveOn itself.” According to the National Journal:

“This is the worst and most vile form of political hate speech,” Republican National Committee spokesman Ed Gillespie proclaimed. “MoveOn.org should apologize.”

Boyd did just that, expressing “deep regret” that the ads made it through MoveOn’s filtering process, and promising to scrutinize such material in the future. Pariser emphasized that MoveOn had not produced the ads, not aired them, not endorsed them in the voting, and had removed them from the Web site –adding that the RNC had put them on its Web site to score points. Still, the damage had been done.

Will the RNC now issue a public apology?

The people in charge are simply despicable.
They will attempt anything outrageous and let it continue until it is finally forced to withdraw and then they will issue a very (in)sincere apology.

    Bastards. Hate-mongers.

How long will it take before the inbred reich-wing hicks blames the Left for the photo?

  5. EnnuiDivine says:

Man. That is IMPRESSIVELY racist, even by RNC standards. Whether or not they approved of the pic, it appeared on their page. They should apologize for its existence. Or, failing that, fall upon their wazikashis in an act of mass contrition.

I wonder if Chairman Mike has anything to say about the picture.

(I’m pretty sure Alan Keyes already agrees with the sentiment)

This statistician thinks that the hypothesis that the probability that inbred hicks can cut and paste the word miscegenation into Webster’s or any other on-line dictionary, let alone write it down and carry it to a bound-text dictionary, is vanishingly small. The hicks are out there on the distribution where the curve is asymptotic to zero.

    backup says:
The photo and caption are racist and repulsive. The RNC should apologize for the image making its way onto their website.

See was that so hard? You could just have said that, instead of whining and carrying water for the RNC that we “both” know is “full” of racists…

My god, how low can you get. The question is will Steele apologize? This tells you how desperate the RNC is getting. This will certainly backfire on the Republican Party’s recruitments for new minority members and this puts Mike Steele is really bad position as the new RNC Chairman and first black to be RNC chairman.

Now, now — all backup did was suggest the possibility that somebody on the left posted this on their Facebook site in order to sabotage it. He never said it was a certainty. And he’s right — it IS possible, but that doesn’t necessarily make it likely or even probable.

The point appears to be that this filth was up for SIX FREAKING DAYS before the RNC took it down — whether it was put up by a sick mind from the right or a sick prankster from the left. It’s that lapse they need to apologize for — that, and how something like this could wind up there in the first place.

Of course, that could be because when the left exhibits racism, it’s rare enough to be news.

When the right exhibits racism — not so much.

That would explain coverage by all the rest of the media — Fox News would only cover it to make the left look bad. Their motive for 99% of their content.

This poster was probably the product of one of those stellar minds who also bellows, “IMPEACH OBAMA!” These halfwits have absolutely no idea what “impeach” means, and they are equally clueless about what it takes to “repeal” a decision by the Supreme Court.

And, like the lady who exits the restroom with her skirt tucked into her pantyhose and proceeds straight to the dance floor, this birdbrain probably has no idea how obvious (and embarrassing) his ignorance is to everyone else, because he doesn’t see it.

I’m just going to say what everyone is thinking. ThinkProgress should clearly apologize for hosting this racist photo of Barack Obama.

I think our country could actually benefit from contemplating the notion of “miscegenation” a little bit. Something that is commonplace today was considered a crime only fifty or sixty years ago. And, even more recently has been punished by vigilante justice. The arguments used against miscegenation mirror those which are used to argue against gay marriage today. Figuring out what is so wrong with miscegenation laws might help put similar gay marriage bans into perspective.

I just listened to an old recording of Orson Welles producing and acting in a radioplay of Showboat. It was fascinating because the matriarch role was played by Edna Ferber herself, who wrote the original book.
There’s a scene in which the sheriff of a river town refuses to let the boat put on its show because he’s discovered their lead actress is of mixed blood. She leaves the company rather than impair them further.
The musical handles it more elaborately, and diminishes the impact of the fact that there were parts of America where people of mixed racial parentage could not even be seen upon the stage. At all.
As Faulkner said, the past isn’t dead. It isn’t even past.

OK, Slappy–have you ever been to Kenwood? I have friends that live there now. It’s a neighborhood with lots of trees and fine, big houses–bordered by excruciatingly hard and dangerous slums.
An awful lot of those fine houses were divvied up into student apartments and a lot more were in disrepair. And while it was and is pretty, it was and is a dangerous neighborhood.
It’s full of students, because it’s next to the University of Chicago. It’s a physically gorgeous place, but if you were at all familiar with the area, you’d know it’s neither ritzy nor exclusive.

The GOP continues to exploit the MoveOn Bush Nazi ad deception. It was almost the first thing out of Dick Armey’s mouth on the August 16 Meet The Press. This was at the height of the manufactured “tea party” hubbub, in which national GOP organizations promoted images of Obama-as-Hitler. On of the main organizations behind it was the health-care-industry-funded on run by Mr. Armey. Here is the transcript of the beginning of Armey’s appearance that day.

MR. GREGORY: Congressman Armey, FreedomWorks, your organization, advocacy organization getting together a lot of folks, coordinating a lot of the efforts to get people out for the protests. Do you bear some responsibility for the tone of the debate?

FMR. REP. DICK ARMEY (R-TX): Not, not whatsoever. Not when you see the kind of extreme thing you just saw, the—you know, I had my differences with President Bush, George W. Bush, there’s no doubt about it. They were well aware of that. But when moveon.org ran those ads that compared President Bush with, with Adolf Hitler, I thought it was despicable.

MS. RACHEL MADDOW: They never did that.

REP. ARMEY: They did do it. I’ll show you the ad.

MS. MADDOW: They didn’t do that. They never ran an ad that compared…

REP. ARMEY: All right. Anyway. All right.

MS. MADDOW: MoveOn never ran an ad that compared Bush to Hitler.

    REP. ARMEY: All right.

MR. GREGORY: Well, hold on, hold on. Finish your thought and then…

Armey returned to the MoveOn topic later on but continued to shout down Maddow’s attempt to correct the record, saying of the ad “I watched it this morning!”
