At the outset of Senate hearings on clean energy and climate legislation today, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), ranking member of the Environment and Public Works Commitee, mockingly praised chair Barbara Boxer (D-CA) for mentioning “global warming” in a YouTube video about the bill. Inhofe claimed that people “have been running from that term” once “that natural warming cycle” ended “nine years ago”:
I do want to congratulate you on your Youtube, the fact you’re using the term global warming again, I appreciate that. People have been running from that term ever since we went out of that natural warming cycle about nine years ago.
Watch it:
Inhofe’s dangerous nonsense has been debunked repeatedly by scientists, from the UK Met Office and NOAA to independent statisticians. 2005 is the hottest year on record, and the last ten years have been the hottest decade on record. Furthermore, it is clear that fossil fuel emissions are responsible.

if the decade from 2006 to 2016 continues to be cool, will that be the “trend” necessary to reverse the global warming theory?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:21 pmMr. Inhofe has a problem with science…
And facts
And reality
While that makes him feel right at home in Oklahoma, this guy is a complete and utter joke.
A clown, if you will
October 27th, 2009 at 4:21 pmThis is more GOPshite from a leading GOPshite congress critter.
He doesn’t know jacksh** about science or anything else.
Morons like that clown are the face today of the repiggie party, a vile swamp creature which belches its ignorance and its bigotry throughout the bog, leaving its mating scent for similar antediluvian monsters.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:22 pmSpeaking of clowns…

Sorry, Senator, but 8 years ago the world went into a massive cycle of warming. Things heated up nicely for you and your troglodyte buddies.
Oh, you were talking about climate?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:24 pminhoff’s only source of research is his “bible” What a pathetic excuse for a government official.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:24 pmWhat in the everloving Hell are you talking about?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:24 pmIf it ended nine years ago, how could the past decade be the hottest on record? Stupid fcuk.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:25 pmInhofe, Lieberman, Boehner, Terry, the RNC, the FRC, are subjects of recent topics here at TP — I think I should go out to purchase a gas mask before I read any further.
BTW — OT, but did you all know that the wonderful repugs are also holding up the seating of the surgeon general, appointed in July!!?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:25 pmWe are in the midst of a flu epidemic and the surgeon general is still locked out of her office by intransigent repugs.
Why they did change the name to “Climate Change”?
Same reason most Republicans now call themselves conservative. A bit of distance from the uneducated morons.

If I was dumb as a stump and ignored all scientific reasoning and fact. And did so as well in my daily life disdaining others who didn’t share my christain beliefs – could I be as blissfully happy as this moron?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:27 pmWith questions like that, you sound like a product of the Oklahoma educational system.
It’s the same topic, troll. You do realize you live in the United States and America?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:28 pmI’m afraid to ask this. I’m trying to assume that Inhofe has at least some basis in reality for his statement. So what is he relying on that happened 9 years ago that there was some thought that the cycle ended ?
All I can think of is 9 years ago, Bush became president and squelched the scientists.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:28 pmhe represents OK accurately.

Crayon time for Stormy. They changed it because while the globe is in a warming cycle certain people don”t realize that this causes many different types of climate change as opposed to the dim who look out the window and say, its snowing, that don’t seem warm to me.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:29 pmThis guy is such an embarassment! Other Countries must think we are insane. This is as bad as Sen. Stevens infamous ‘Tubes’ remark. It makes me cringe.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:30 pmThe first decisive National Academy of Science study of carbon dioxide’s impact on climate, published in 1979, abandoned “inadvertent climate modification.” Often called the Charney Report for its chairman, Jule Charney of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, declared: “if carbon dioxide continues to increase, [we find] no reason to doubt that climate changes will result and no reason to believe that these changes will be negligible.”
In place of inadvertent climate modification, Charney adopted Broecker’s usage. When referring to surface temperature change, Charney used “global warming.” When discussing the many other changes that would be induced by increasing carbon dioxide, Charney used “climate change.”
Within scientific journals, this is still how the two terms are used. Global warming refers to surface temperature increases, while climate change includes global warming and everything else that increasing greenhouse gas amounts will affect.

I give Boxer permission to kick Inhofe’s little tiny balls out the top of his head.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:30 pmPeople like Senator Inhofe who deny scientific concepts like Climate Change should be required to forgo everything that has been provided to them by science. Such as electricity, cars, phones, medicine, etc….
October 27th, 2009 at 4:32 pmaw man! you ended that clip too soon!
the look on boxer’s face as her head shot up!
what did she say after that?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:33 pmThe reason why they changed from ‘global warming’ to ‘climate change’ was climate change is a more accurate statement. Climate change speaks to a massive, and probably catastrophic, re-ordering of the climate of the entire planet.
And everytime there was a cold day in July, ignorant yahoos who don’t understand the concept of climate vs. weather would sarcastically repeat the mantra, ‘global warming but its cold out’ to try and derail the process.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:34 pmInhofe: ‘Natural warming cycle’ ended ‘about nine years ago.’
And unfortunately for the good folk of OK and America, Inhofe’s ‘Natural stupidity’ has continued on unabated for close to 75 years.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:35 pmCan you believe this? These old white guys are making a laughing stock out of us. It boggles my mind. These guys have no ideas, no Independant thought. I makes me so depressed that these guys have so much power. It speaks volumes about how ill-educated and uninformed our citizens are.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:36 pmOnce again Jimmy proves that those who Believe in an imminent Rapture should have no place in discussions about future plans. How can one make informed decisions about the future when one doesn’t Believe there is a future? These insane freaks actually Believe God will take them away before they starve, drown, or die of thirst.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:38 pmInhofe and the rest of the teabaggers are classic examples of what happens when you get your facts from op-eds instead of science.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:38 pmI do want to congratulate you on your Youtube, the fact you’re using the term global warming again, I appreciate that. People have been running from that term ever since we went out of that natural warming cycle about nine years ago.
You , of course , being a climatologist , and can readily make that type of absurd and completely unsubstantiated claim ……………………………..

First off, who the hell is they? Is there a secret group out there that has control over what some people call something? You really are one dense tool.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:42 pmAwk. Awk. I think that I’ll go back to watching Sponge Bob on TV; that show makes more sense than Republicans do…
October 27th, 2009 at 4:43 pmHey Storm, where’s that health care proposal you owe us? Your deadline ended a couple of hours ago, but I’m willing to extend it for the next 15 minutes.
Give us your solution to the health care problem since you claim that the public option is the worst possible option. Or are you going to struggle with this argument because Limbaugh and Beck aren’t on to feed you talking points?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:46 pm@SMARM : Why did the name change from “Global Warming” to “Climate Change”?
Because too many morons out there, mislead by bible-thumping idiots who believe the world is only 6000 years old, and by politicians who’s pockets have been stuffed by oil-industry lobbyists, kept thinking that “global warming” meant a constant and smooth increase in temperature. They’d show their ignorance with statements like “It’s cold today in Wagga Wagga”.
So the scientists started using the phrase “climate change”, to help keep those Republicans with puny minds from getting confused.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:46 pmWell, well, well… It turns out that SC isn’t going to impeach Gov. Sanford. Funny. This guy ditches his state for five friggin days to cuddle up to his lover, and they decide to let him stay? What he did was break the law. What if there was a National Emergency? Hurricane? Meanwhile Sptizer and McGreevy were thrown under the bus. Unreal.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:48 pmInhofe 1865: “The Ford Theatre is prefectly safe, Mr Lincoln”
October 27th, 2009 at 4:49 pmWell lets see…Should I believe the scientists of the world or, should I believe some Senator who thinks the world is only 6000 years old and humans walked with dinosaurs. Boy, its really a tough call.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:49 pmP.D.
It’s quite simple, really. The Reichwhiners NEVER take responsibility for their own failings.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:52 pmNewton’s basic principal of “for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction” in terms of the equilibrium of our ecosystem’s with respect to it’s momentum/inertia is simply too much for the troglodyte.
All the weather across the Globe is inter-connected and it’s variations all related:
The last decade has witnessed colder/milder winters in the Northern Hemisphere during hotter than usual Summers in the Southern Hemi, and vice versa.
Our planet is reflexive, and “trying to cool itself” – a reaction to the increase in temperature. Most of the melted ice has to evaporate before if can be re-deposited elsewhere.) The exponential increase in CO2 and Methane will only continue to exacerbate the situation.
Any troll reading up to know just earned a cookie.
A shit-sandwich-cookie.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:52 pmit must be true if perfesser Inhofe says so.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:53 pmGotta wonder how well this clown will be received in Copenhagen. They probably never even heard of this guy and if they do they will wish they didn’t.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:55 pmnothing funnier than a science-denier invoking science to prop up his own, wantonly-prostituted point of view…
poor, dumb, mr. inhofe.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:55 pmI wonder when someone is going to call out Sen. Inhofe on his climate “knowledge.” You know, something like, what peer reviewed research he’s done or what, if any, research or studies he’s commissioned to prove him right. My guess would be zero. Just another bought and paid for tool.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:55 pmSen. James Inhofe (R-OK), ranking member of the Environment and Public Works Commitee
Simply another example that our government needs an overhaul .
How in the hell does an ignorant , bible-tumping rube like this yokel , end up on ANY committee , much less as a ranking member dealing with the enviroment ?
Sheesh ………….Isn’t McCrappyPilot’s existence proof-positive that with age , wisdom isn’t always a constant companion ????????????????
October 27th, 2009 at 4:56 pmpete@44, Yeah, I know. But Ensign and Sanford really tick me off. Vitter too. They were all over Clinton during the ‘Monica’ scandal, acting so self-rightous and they are just as bad, NO they are worse! These holier than thou types make me seethe.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:56 pmThe reason that Inhofe and his ilk cling desperately to the claim that “a warming trend ended nine years ago” is that 1998 is generally regarded as the warmest climatological year on record. Since no one year has surpassed it since then, they claim that the planet is cooling, even though the 11 warmest years on record had all occurred in the last 13 as of last year.
It takes a deliberate mis-reading of the data to convince oneself of that claim, and exposes anyone who trumpets it as a fraud. Coincidentally, I’ve found that making this claim is also a reliable indicator of one’s politics — invariably right-wing, even though politics should have nothing to do with science.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:59 pmIf he won’t tell you, I will. Don’t get sick, but if you do, die fast.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:59 pmVote for me, and I’ll set you free
October 27th, 2009 at 5:00 pmRap on brother, rap on!
Why they did change the name to “Climate Change”?
Because global warming causes unusual climate activity in unexpected places…
October 27th, 2009 at 5:02 pmThe dumbasses cannot conceive of the difference between weather and climate.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:02 pmDoug Hoffman may I introduce you to Borgen?

October 27th, 2009 at 5:24 pmkwsventures offers what is for him a very cogent argument: repeating words that eh wishes to ridicule, then affirming that he is “LMAO” at them.
Well crafted, kwsventures.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:29 pmI think Inhofe majored in business administration and he completed his bachelors degree when he was thirty eight years old. He served as President of Quaker Life Insurance company and it went into receivership while he was running it. I do not see anything that qualifies him in science but I see that he is a religious nut.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:31 pmGlobal warming? Climate change? B.S.? LMAO
—
October 27th, 2009 at 5:32 pmAnd you base this opinion upon what? Are you now going to claim that in addition to be a business owner you are also trained in climate science?
The following quote rings so true with wingnuts like Inhofe and the other troglodytes with (R)associated with their names.
“There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance – that principle is contempt prior to investigation”
Herbert Spencer

Methinks kws indulged in that one thin mint. You know, the one in the urinal in the men’s room.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:37 pmThere have been times when Mankind followed the best minds. This has led to things like the Classical Greek era, the Renaissance, the defeat of the Axis powers, and the eradication of smallpox.
There have also been times when our best minds have been ignored or even persecuted. This has led to things like the Inquisition, the Dark Ages, the Great Depression, the invasion of an innocent Iraq, and the Great Collapse of 2008.
It’s long past time to start listening to the smartest people among us, again.
October 27th, 2009 at 5:39 pmBTW. Jimmy Inhofe could be in a room full of insects and still wouldn’t be the smartest one in the room. Heck! He could be in a room full of plants, appliances, or lumber and wouldn’t be the smartest one in the room.

October 27th, 2009 at 6:18 pmRight Outhoffe, and that lobbyist isn’t a wall street whore. etc etc.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:21 pmWhat ‘natural warming cycle’? Can the senator or his supporters be a little more specific, or less vague? Meterologists and climatologists (and statisticians) can tell us that there aren’t any cycles, per se. The raw data on a year to year basis just looks like noise; it’s up, it’s down, it’s somewhere in between. If you strip out a cyclic driver, like the insolation quantity due to the sunspot cycle, the remainder still looks like noise. There are so many factors that climate trends are not easy to pull out; if they were, it would be over and done with by now.
It’s certainly not so simple that an idiot Senator has anything useful to say, although his comments do indicate that he’s been well heeled by various energy establishments, like “Big Oil”.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:51 pmWhy doesn’t Ivanhoe do his job, and leave the science to scientists?
October 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pmJebus. Look up “fossil” in the dictionary – you see that moron’s picture.

October 27th, 2009 at 9:17 pmI think Barbara Boxer would just love to thump his soft pointy head.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:25 pmHere’s what I want to know about this jaq off Inhofe–why does he believe that the earth came out of a natural warming cycle 9 years ago??? Let me guess. He checked WITH A SCIENTIST!!!
Did he then ask that scientist, because obviously he believes in the scientific evidence produced by scientists, what that scientist though about the SCIENCE of human exacerbated global warming?
Of course not. Because I can give him a list of dozens and dozens of scientists, tops in the field of climate science, who will give him their opinion. NO, he’d rather listen to a scientist who will tell him, “No Jim, smoking can’t hurt your health. Trust me, I work for the tobacco industry.”
Why do I live in a world where such stupid, small-minded, fricking, *&$#$, %*%&$, people have power?
October 27th, 2009 at 9:30 pmInhofe, being the climate scientist that he is, clearly believes that if he didn’t receive a note from wither Tom Coburn OR the “family” (of “C” street fame) about new data he could use in his public pronouncements, then he would have to stick with his own factual scientific findings… So he stuck with his own data.
Having been debunked so many times by REAL scientists, he seems to be living on his own cartoon show where his data is the only data (kinda like Beck), he just plows ahead despite everyone around the world with an IQ high than an orange laughing themselves silly…
Hopefully, he will be summarily DISMISSED when he and his ‘team’ go to Scandinavia as an expert team to fight against climatic action – any action to help the rest of the world is BAD in his perspective…
Yikes, it sure took a lot of venting here to get to the point, sorry SO straight to the point – Inhofe is an idiot. He should be dismissed from every forum he tries to interject himself into and laughed out of every forum where he appears.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:56 pmAnother Beck disciple turned murderer:
October 27th, 2009 at 10:53 pmA man stabbed and bludgeoned his sister and her husband to death in El Cerrito in 2006 because he thought the couple were too liberal, were raising their children wrong and because they hadn’t invited him over for Christmas, a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday.
Inhofe will understand global warming when he enters Hell.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:55 amIs this guy a natural idiot or did he have to practice? Look what we elect :..
October 28th, 2009 at 9:15 amInHOfe is a tool for the energy industry. His words and actions should be taught in every school as an example of what happens when government officials are bought off by corporations. In essence this man is now an employee of the energy industry. Don’t expect anything more from him than a regurgitation of energy lobby lies. He is beneath contempt.
October 28th, 2009 at 9:58 amInhofe: ‘Natural warming cycle’ ended ‘about nine years ago.’
About the time W took office. World leaders can attest to the chill.
Has the thaw begun?
October 28th, 2009 at 10:04 amThey want to call it climate change because dumbasses like Storm think global warming means their neighborhood is always going to be hot from now on.
Illinois had a cool summer because El Nino in the Pacific made the water very warm there. Such a concept is far too complex for the puny knot of ganglia which passes for a brain in the typical right-wing drone.
October 28th, 2009 at 11:50 amInhofe got his data from balloon boy’s dad.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:22 pmThis man is too stupid to live.
