Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that he would be including a version of the public option (with a state opt-out provision) in the Senate’s final health care bill. Although all of the details of the public plan are yet to be determined, progressives cheered the move. As Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) admitted, without all the pressure that progressives in and out of Congress put on legislators, it is unlikely there would have been a public option included in Reid’s final bill.
Yet this afternoon, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) broke with the Democratic caucus that he is a member of and vowed to join a Republican-led filibuster if the public option is not removed from the bill. In response, insurance company stocks — which plummeted Monday as Reid made his announcement — shot up after Lieberman made his announcement around 1:30 pm:

Lieberman’s opposition to the public option puts him completely out of step with Connecticut voters. As this polling from 538.com’s Nate Silver shows, voters in every single one of Connecticut’s congressional districts favor the inclusion of a public option in health care legislation by wide margins. The stated reason for Lieberman’s opposition to the public option — that it would increase the debt and create another entitlement — is misplaced. As ThinkProgress has noted before, the public option would be self-sustaining and would cut the deficit.
Insurance giant Aetna, represented by the blue line above, fared the best among all of the health insurance companies. Aetna is based in Hartford, CT. It is also the tenth largest single private contributor to Lieberman’s re-election committee.
These people, I say, are morally bankrupt.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:12 pmThe Dow Jones Industrial Average: Casinos, all.
Rising and dropping at mere words from a Senator. What suckers. While they’re in such a panic, they should just sink all their money in gold, now, while the price is sky-high.
The price ROSE when Lieberman threatened to filibuster/cloture vote AGAINST this bill? Oh, really? When was the last time Lieberman WASN’T lying?
October 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pmAs Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) admitted, without all the pressure that progressives in and out of Congress put on legislators, it is unlikely there would have been a public option included in Reid’s final bill.
THAT is the message of the day.
And tomorrow.
And next week.
And…forever.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pmI think Joe just needs time to unload his health insurance stocks.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:16 pmpardon me while I email my state senator, whiny assed LIEberman. good goddamn, this stupid fcuk makes me sick.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:18 pmRich H: Ha! Good one. I hope Reid really kicks Liberman’s butt.
Of course everyone has known how worthless and corrupt Lieberman is for a long time.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:19 pmNo other evidence needs to be presented that LIEberman has always been for himself , 1st and 2nd , and the hell with everyone and everything else…………….
October 27th, 2009 at 3:19 pmIf the public option tanks from the Joementum, we can thank all the dip$hits from Connecticut who squandered their chance to kick him out of the Senate once and for all.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:22 pmConnecticut voters = Suckers
Elections have consequences, you should recall LIEberman, he is scum.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:23 pmSenator Lieberman,
October 27th, 2009 at 3:25 pmAs a member of your constituency I find it disturbing that you would go against the wishes of the people you were elected to represent. Clearly, your threatening to filibuster any bill with a public option is in direct conflict to the wishes of the people of the state of Connecticut you were elected to represent.
what an a$$hole.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:25 pmLieberman could have added… “I work for the people who bribed me, not you silly assed people who voted for me, get real”.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:27 pmThey (politicians)don’t get it??? do they????
When times get worse, people wake up!!!!
When times get bad, people get mad!!!
When times are to hard to handle, people demand change!!
This is where we are at. Do they (our reps) see that???
Elections from this point on, will have VERY BIG IMPLICATIONS on our society…today , tomorrow and the day after that.
GOOD TO SEE PEOPLE ARE WAKING UP!!!!!
October 27th, 2009 at 3:28 pmAetna: what a bunch of corporate pigs they were (from my very own personal “health insurance” experience.
We need a robust Day One (starting New Year’s Day, 2010, not in three years or thirty-three years or…), that is open to all Americans. We do not need to have tax-payers subsideries (sic) for poor folks to buy “health insurance” from greedy for-obscene-profits private insurance companies. If we have to subsidize the purchasing of health insurance, let it be for Public Option federal health insurance, not private corporate greed insurance.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:28 pmI hope they ALL GO BLIND!! Lieberman is NOT allowed to get a guide dog either! BASTARDS!!
October 27th, 2009 at 3:29 pmHoly Joe doesn’t represent the people. That much was clear when he ignored the people’s wishes and ran against the people’s candidate after he’d lost the primary.
Holy Joe represents himself … and the insurance industry money they shovel his way.
Cheers,
October 27th, 2009 at 3:30 pmSenator Lieberman,
As a member of your constituency I find it disturbing that you would go against the wishes of the people you were elected to represent. Clearly, your threatening to filibuster any bill with a public option is in direct conflict to the wishes of the people of the state of Connecticut you were elected to represent
SORRY TO SAY…YOU PEOPLE, ARE THE FOOLS WHO ELECTED THIS IDIOT!!!
SIMPLE RULE TO VOTING IN THE US….VOTE FOR ANYONE HOW CAN’T GET CAMPAINGN DONATIONS FROM CORPORATIONS!!!!!HE’S THE MAN!!!
October 27th, 2009 at 3:31 pmI am not surprised at NYSE profiting from life or the ending of it as the first securities brokered thru the Buttonwood agreement were 80 million in war bonds issued by Alexander Hamilton to pay for the revolutionary war.

October 27th, 2009 at 3:33 pmI wonder if Joe Lieberman can tell us where it is etched in stone that requires politicians to make sure that useless health insurance companies can continue to make money and maximize profits at the expense of human lives and suffering. Every person that works for a health insurance company supports their lives with money borne of blood.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:34 pmLIEberman has been in office far to long. CT voters, why didn’t you vote this guy out? He is no longer an Independant, he is a Repug.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:34 pmNOLIESPLEASE says:
“SORRY TO SAY…YOU PEOPLE, ARE THE FOOLS WHO ELECTED THIS IDIOT!!!”
well, i guess that’s the downside of living in a democracy, isn’t it? sometimes the guy you voted for (ned lamont) doesn’t win.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:36 pmI’ll bet that sanctimonious pr*ck Holy Joe’s deeeee-lighted to have stolen the spotlight from that baggy old harpy Olympia Snowe.
What a pig.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:36 pmThe insurance industry lost a boatload of money on most of their investments when the market tanked, but at least their investment in Joe Lieberman (I-CT) looks like it will pay off handsomely.
Hey, Harry, bet you’re glad you let Holy Joe keep his seniority and chairmanships, huh?

I’m sorry with the choice of words.
I just don’t understand how people get fooled.
Like the WHO says….WE WONT GET FOOLED AGAIN!!!!
PEACE MOON AND ANTWHISTLE!!!
October 27th, 2009 at 3:43 pmLieberman needs to be indicted right now for accepting bribe money. The fact that this slug is not on trial is because the law is not applied to him or Bush or Cheney or any of the Reichwing criminals.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:43 pmOh noes! What will happen to the stock market if the health insurance companies no longer have mega bucks that they bleed from people to provide health care that they can invest while denying you health care?

Bite Me!
October 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pmLobbying is basically just kickbacks legalized Beefeater.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pmIf Joe is so against public healthcare as an OPTION for the rest of us, he should be required to give up his public healthcare that he enjoys, and that we all pay for, as (a) a federal employee; and (b) an over-65 American.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pmThis is why it was important to get Olympia Snowe on board — to preserve that 60th vote on cloture.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:53 pmWe also need to imprison each and every one of these rightwing fascist trolls. How does life in prison sound Beefeater? I will be the guy with the long, start stick.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:53 pmBeefeater says:
And this is the level of intelligence found on all “progressive” sites. Make an unsubstantiated allegation and then demand and indictment. Pure genius there boy!
I take it you have proof that all progressive sites do this kind of thing.
Because otherwise you allegation is, y’know, unsubstantiated.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:53 pmBeefeater seems to support the use of bribe money to run the government of the United States. Who is paying you Beef?
October 27th, 2009 at 3:54 pmAnd this is the level of intelligence found on all “progressive” sites.
Pinning your group think imagination on others beefy?

Its called an allegation because it alleges wrongdoing…sheesh. Its how probes begin.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:55 pmYou know, if you don’t like the unsubstantiated claims, Beefy, you could always ask both sides to stop.
And yet Fox will STILL make them until the cows come home.

October 27th, 2009 at 3:56 pmBeefeater, tell me again, what was just any successful program for the gop, ever?
We don’t like to listen to losers.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:56 pmWe have evidence Lieberman has taken large sums of money from the health insurance industry. We also have evidence that Lieberman is voting against the will of his constituents. That is substantial enough if you ask me.
Holder needs to get off his lazy ass and put Liberman in a cell while he awaits trial for bribery.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:58 pmBeefeater says:
“Make an unsubstantiated allegation and then demand and indictment. Pure genius there boy!”
afternoon, ignorant beyotch. that’s kind of like the teabagging filth screaming for obama’s impeachment since the inauaguration, right?
October 27th, 2009 at 3:59 pmPresident Obama, remember last year, when you campaigned for for your good friend Joe and didn’t help the candidate the dems in Conn. chose to run as their senator? Remember that? How do you feel now about helping your good friend joe? Just askin, that’s all….
October 27th, 2009 at 3:59 pmSo let’s play a little game, Beef Jerky: let’s measure “the level of intelligence” on all progressive blogs/sites against “the level of intelligence” on all conservative blogs/sites.
Care to wager which one’s higher? We, after all, have “the Ivy League elite” and an overwhelming majority of Nobel Prize winning scientists, while you have the teabaggers and Glen Beck…
October 27th, 2009 at 4:01 pmGee, I wonder how Senator Lamont would have voted? Conn? President Obama? Either of the Clintons? VP Biden? Anybody who campaigned for him after the dems of conn threw his ass to the curb? Anybody?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:03 pmJoe seems to think exposing the people to monetary exploitation by cartels is a good thing.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:04 pmAnd what happens Joe when one entity takes all the peoples wealth and credit drys up and leaves nothing for other purchases?
Economic failure.

To be expected.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:08 pmAlso, it demonstrates why the insurance industry does not want any interference with their free reign over health care.
slappy, you can’t carry a tune much less anything else.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:09 pm“Don’t you think I have carried you long enough?”
October 27th, 2009 at 4:12 pmseriously, slappy? how much taxes do you pay being a wal-mart greeter?
If the Democrats can keep their spine this looks like it could boil over to a battle Royale. Fillibuster, reconiliation, removing Smokey Joe from the caucus and any of his Chair responsibilities.
And yet, no real republican plan.
Force their hand Democrats.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:12 pmKind of an arrogant elitist aren’t you?
When you can prove that we don’t work and pay and have a right to an opinion, you can say that. Until then, you just look desperate.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:13 pmBeefeater,
Are you going to defend Lieberman against my accusation that he has accepted bribery money? Do you have evidence that contradicts his taking large sums of money from the insurance industry? Do you have evidence that his constituents do not want a public option? I will be waiting for your evidence.
Lieberman is a criminal, just like every member of the fascist Republican crime syndicate, just like every troll that propagandizes for that crime syndicate. If our justice department wasn’t so utterly corrupted by fascist Republicans, we might actually have a chance at justice.
As it stands right now, when criminals like Lieberman, Bush and Cheney go unpunished, the entire body of law crumbles to dust. The law must apply to every equally, and when it does not, it cannot be applied to anyone.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:13 pmDon’t you think I have carried you long enough?
You think your insurance premium goes into a special account with your name on it that others dont draw from?
Why not just put your premium in a pickle jar in the backyard and see how far that goes towards paying your medical bill after an accident.

October 27th, 2009 at 4:17 pmLieberman’s phone and fax machines are overloaded at this time.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:18 pmOne can answer the age old question of “Where’s the beef?” at long last.
Its in the troll kool aid. (And it isn’t a very good cut either.)
October 27th, 2009 at 4:18 pmIt’s way past time to kick that vile corporate beast in the teeth.
They won’t be content until you are all dead, with all of your wealth having been forfeited to them and their cronies in Congress.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:19 pmAnd if your so freaking wealthy Slappy you wouldnt need to buy insurance would you? But you would because you want others to pay for your medical care, right?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:19 pmLieberman’s phone and fax machines are overloaded at this time.
Sounds like Joe himself. Maybe if someone suggested a good laxative for him.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:19 pmI can’t beelieve how the trolls are calling people a drain on society! Where’s their Christian Charity? Or the fact that these citizens are AMERICANS? WTF? I thought Americans looked out for each other? What a gruop of immoral jackas*es.

Joe Lieberman is a traitor to his former party. Kick the bastard out of the Democratic caucus and spend every penny you can to get the idiot defeated in the next Senatorial election. He had screwed every person who voted him back in. Kick him to the curb.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:26 pmSo why do millionaires buy health insurance? Because the costs are borne not from their pockets but ALL of the people that put into that pool of funds.
So dont give me this I am responsible for my own well being when everyone that has an insurance policy is in fact paying for part of their and part of every other policy holders medical bills.
Insurane is a form of socialism and so the thing we are debating then is why an insurance pool needs middlemen investors that raise the cost of running that pool?
October 27th, 2009 at 4:26 pmBeefeater,
Are you going to defend Lieberman against my accusation that he has accepted bribery money? Do you have evidence that contradicts his taking large sums of money from the insurance industry? Do you have evidence that his constituents do not want a public option?
I am still waiting for you to provide evidence to show how unsubstantiated my claim is.

October 27th, 2009 at 4:29 pmI’d equate Stupid Bastanido to something more on the level of an annoying gadfly…….
Heh.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:29 pmThat’s interesting. Not what Joe has just done; I don’t think anyone should expect anything but rank opportunism from Joe, and that’s been the case since the 2006 election. I’m sure it was true before that, as well, but when he bolted the party and set up as an Independent after his primary loss in ‘06, we all should have understood what would come next – Joe playing both sides of the fence for everything that he can get for Joe. He doesn’t give a royal rat’s arse about anything else.
The interesting part is the market moving up and down on a couple of senator’s pronouncements. Even if it’s just a few insurance company stocks that’s pretty serious; plus or minus 3%? And it’s just speculation, because neither Harry Reid nor Joe Lieberman knows what he’s going to have to do between now and the time this thing comes up for a final vote. I’m certainly happy to not be vested in insurance stocks.
OTOH, the voters of Connecticut need to give Joe a thorough reaming; he really ought to be reminded of just who he works for. It’s nice that the insurance companies headquartered in Connecticutt suck up to him with too many donations and campaign contributions, but Joe isn’t supposed to act like or be their employee; his oath is to the Constitution and his working allegiance should be to the people who elected him. I know that sounds as simplistic and naive as jr. high civics, but it really isn’t much more complicated than that (ya dance with who brung ya = ya vote the interest of who elected ya).
October 27th, 2009 at 4:30 pmBeefeater, you are allowed to post here.
We are not allowed to post at right wing sites.

October 27th, 2009 at 4:30 pmBeef Jerky: no response to any of the direct questions you’ve been asked here — just more of your non sequitur-loaded rantings, eh?
Keep up the good work, BJ — you and your teabagging buddies are ensuring a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress for a long, long time…
October 27th, 2009 at 4:32 pmI don’t often wish ill health or injury on anyone, but I wonder what kind of tune Slappy would be singing if his wife or kid came down with something like cancer and his wonderful health insurance company dropped him and his family. Would he be here telling us how its no big deal and that’s the way capitalism is supposed to work? Would he not ask for help from his government, because the government shouldn’t be in the business of helping people, because someone’s taxes would have to pay for it?
I just wonder how much he really believes the crap he spreads here.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:33 pmangels81, republicans are the biggest abusers of social systems. That’s why they think everyone is gaming it.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:35 pmslappybeef is afraid of competition. He seems content with a bean counter from the insurance company deciding whether someones illness will dip into profits. He’d rather throw up diversions than face the cold hard truth.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:36 pmSeems to me, Mr. President needs to pull Joe off to the corner again and have a little talk with him.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pmHow much proof does the American public need to realize the United States has been taken over by Wall Street and Big Business. Liebermann has proven over and over again that he is not interested in serving the public. As the public has asked all the Law Makers for Health Care and Public Option we see it’s the Insurance Companies that are getting what they want. Look for the United States to do as Repbulcian Leader Rush Limbaugh ordered yes President Obama to fail and the United States to fail.
October 27th, 2009 at 4:40 pmMCMetal,
The delicious irony about Bible Spice is that, if she actually got her wish of a “pure” Christian/conservative/extremist party? The first thing they would do is send all the uppity women, like Bible Spice, back to the kitchen. She’s so effing stupid that she doesn’t realize that realizing her dream would reduce her to the status of a maid.

October 27th, 2009 at 5:01 pmIf that graph and this experience trying to get health care reform doesn’t show us the need to publicly finance all federal elections, limit corporate lobbying, limit television advertising and force the networks to provide time for candidates, NOTHING WILL!

Didn’t find much, but I did find this: http://openleft.com/diary/15714/lieberman-threatens-to-vote-against-cloture
Apparently, Lieberman is willing to vote for cloture on the motion to bring the bill to the floor for debate, but against cloture on final passage of the bill (the more I hear about procedure in the Capitol, the more amazed I am that anything gets done at all).
October 27th, 2009 at 5:04 pmIf there is going to be a filibuster let them stand up and TV and talk and talk and talk. Go back to the old time filibuster where they have to really talk, not just some procedural vote.

That was before our manufacturing Base was Sold OUT thru Globalization.
Now it is mostly made up of FINANCIAL Stocks…which makes money by Gambling..
Insurance Stocks which make money by cherry picking and recisions..
And Energy Companies which make money by EXTRACTING and Manipulating the Markets.
No wonder it is so volatile, and subject to the political Winds
October 27th, 2009 at 5:25 pmwe should also focus on how the Dow Jones manipulates public opinion and that of the politicians…
October 27th, 2009 at 5:44 pmInsurance Stocks Plunged As Reid Announced Public Option, Spiked After Lieberman Vowed To Filibuster It
– - Reid and the rest of the Dems in the Senate really need to do something about the Senator from Aetna. In the simplest possible terms, one of the key differences between committee chairmen and backbenchers is that chairmen vote with the party on procedure. This relationship between procedural loyalty and the perks of committee chairmanship needs to be made starkly clear to Lieberman.
Just as Holy Joe wants to make the cloture vote a referendum on the bill’s passage, Democratic leaders ought to make the cloture vote a referendum on Lieberman’s seniority within the caucus.
A vote “no” on cloture should be a vote “no” on retaining seniority status, and with it not only his chairmanship but also his entire slate of committee choices. Whoever is next on the wait lists for Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Small Business gets bumped up onto those committees, and Lieberman gets whatever assignments are left after the other 59 members of the caucus have filled the resulting openings.
Presumably, that would give Lieberman the junior seats on, say, the Rules Committee, the Special Committee on Aging, and the Joint Committees on Printing and the Library. Maybe someone on Reid’s staff — or maybe Schumer’s, since this is more his style — can sort through the committee requests, run the numbers, and quietly pass on to Lieberman the list of committees he would be left with if his seniority were reset to zero as of the day of the cloture vote. Then let Joe see if the GOP is willing to kick any of its own members off of the committees he wants in order to make room for him. If he can cut that deal, fine. If not, then Holy Joe can contemplate exactly how to keep sufficient corporate money coming in to his campaign for 2012 if he has to spend the next three years sitting in the back of the room on the crappiest committees in Washington.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:33 pmReid has already publicly stated that he will strip anyone in the caucus of all leadership assignments if they vote with Repubs to deny votes on this issue.

If it comes to that, let’s _reconcile_ HR676 and its equivalent in the Senate.

We had better be prepared to hold his feet to the fire to make sure he follows through on that.
October 28th, 2009 at 12:51 amLet them filibusters all they want, but MAKE THEM FILIBUSTER, not just SAY they are gonna filibuster as the game is played now. THERE IS NO WAY JOE et al, are going to filibuster anything. They do not even have a titular head of the party. They are a corpse running amok out in the street, and the voices Beck, Newt, Rush, are the blood spouting from the arteries that have been opened by the decapitation that happened in 2006. They have no one leading them, because they all think they are too important, and all deserve to be the head. The party is dead, it is just too stupid to know to lay the fcuk down.

Badger says:
The DOW Jones USED to be made up of Corporations that Actually MADE Things. Dow Jones INDUSTRIALS was what they USED to call it.
The only words left off the truth spoken by Badger is:
AND THE DOW IS OWNED BY RUPERT MURDOCH!!!!! HOLY SHIT GET WITH THE PROGRAM PEOPLE!!!!

According to Wikipedia: “Since March 2005, Hadassah Lieberman [Joe’s wife] has worked for Hill & Knowlton, a lobbying firm based in New York City, as a senior counselor in its health and pharmaceuticals practice.”
So Lieberman’s wife works in the health and pharmaceuticals department of a lobbying firm . . . and Lieberman is so opposed to a public option (and the competition that it will generate) that he will take measures to keep it from an up or down vote in the Senate. Can you say, “conflict of interest”? Does he even know what it means?
