A group led by Alliance Coal CEO Joseph Craft recently proposed donating $7 million to the University of Kentucky for a new dorm for the men’s basketball team. The catch, however, is that the dorm would have to be named after Craft’s true love: coal. The proposed change sparked intense protests from local environmentalists and students. One professor said that as universities become “models for new energy sources,” putting “coal” on a prominent building could “make it difficult to attract top students and faculty members to the university.” Last night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation, discussed the controversy. Watch it:
This afternoon, the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees voted 16-3 to approve the proposal for the new dorm, which will be named the “Wildcat Coal Lodge.” Significantly, two of the “no” votes were from faculty representative Ernie Yanarella and Student Government President Ryan Smith, who said he opposed the motion “as a voice for the student body.”
Students in the audience were reportedly not allowed to speak at the meeting. After the vote, people began chanting, “Move forward, not backward,” forcing the trustees to temporarily recess. More on the events at the meeting:
The vote set off shouts from about 30 protesters, mostly students, who attended the meeting.
“Big Coal is about to go down, and the university’s going down with them,” said Cor de Jong, who described himself as “a Lexingtonian and a basketball fan.”
A statement from students was passed out to board members moments before the vote. “They did not read our statement,” said Katie Goldey, a senior majoring in international studies. “They weren’t even given a chance to read it.”
Ironically, because the building costs more than $5 million, it is required to “meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards.”
The coal industry has been taking a greater “public role” in the University of Kentucky lately. While Craft has already donated millions of dollars and has a basketball practice facility named in his honor, this is the first time that coal is being specifically recognized. Last weekend, however, there was a “students only” basketball practice “sponsored by Joe Craft and the Friends of Coal.”
The battle over America’s clean energy future is increasingly being fought on college campuses. As Greenwire reported recently, environmentalists are turning to student activists to get the word out about dirty coal, while American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity — the coal industry’s biggest lobbying group — “spent the summer sending activists to 264 cities in eight states, where they attended community events and visited college campuses.” More here and here on efforts to get dirty coal off U.S. campuses.
Could be worse. Could have been endowed by the fertilizer industry.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:34 pmWell, I can pretty much guess a new tradition of dorm pranks could be in the future for this hall.
My guess is any signage gets constantly stolen or vandalized.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:35 pmUniversity Of Kentucky Approves New $7 Million Industry-Funded Dorm Named After ‘Coal’
– - I wish upon the Wildcats basketball program another Billy Gillispie. And nice job of throwing legendary Wildcat coach Joe B. Hall under the bus and the dorm.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:38 pm$7 million for a dorm to house basketball players?
And just the men?
What a waste.
Maybe they can use coal ash in the concrete.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:41 pmWill the building be heated with dirty coal so that the basketball team and entire student body can choke and cough every day?
October 27th, 2009 at 6:41 pmA dorm for just basketball players probably violates the Equal Protection clause.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:43 pmThey should name the building the “Wildcat Coalition Lodge”.
That way it still has the word “coal” in it, but won’t look like it’s promoting a filthy, unhealthy source of energy.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:45 pmThis dorm may also be a violation of Title IX.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:47 pmShould have just called it “Black Lung Disease”…more to the point.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:49 pmUltimately it will be just another embarrassing anecdote to relate on campus tours. Our university is so starved for cash they let this one be named after “coal”.
October 27th, 2009 at 6:59 pmGreat point.
Or “Black Lung Dorm”

Why do this at all? Does the dorm they are using now need to be replaced? Or is this just some excuse for a rich coal exec to spread his personal ideology?

October 27th, 2009 at 7:11 pmHi, armand! How are you?

October 27th, 2009 at 7:18 pmMakes me ashamed to have grown up in Lexington and gotten my undergrad from there! Basketball there is like the Holy Grail — this sponsor is untouchable by helping to sponsor the team.

It’s not all so bad. Just think, the coal to heat the dorm could come from a mountaintop removal. The rock and other debris could be used to make the concrete and the tree’s could be used for the frameing.
Just make sure the mountaintop is level and the university can have a new practice field.
All the contaiminents that flow downstream are gifts to the town for free.
October 27th, 2009 at 7:26 pmI just watched an Aussie science show called catalyst which
showed how coal is being gasified without digging it up.
A seam of coal is injected with oxygen and water, and ignited. This produces a hydrocarbon which is then burned to
produce electrity.
The water forces out the gas, and the burning coal will extinguish by shutting off the oxygen.
This method produces half the GH gas than traditional coal
plants, and no mining.
It’s no solution, but something developing countries like China could try.
October 27th, 2009 at 7:28 pmI see now, armand. You just want to be a dickhead. Okay, I get it.
Have you ever heard any variation of the adage “Treat other people the way you would want them to treat you?”
You appear to want people to treat you like a dickhead, since that’s how you’re treating others.
I’ll try to remember that. Have a nice life. Good luck in prison.

October 27th, 2009 at 7:29 pmAs my father used to say, “money talks.”
One would think that the academia at an instution for higher learning would find a way to negotiate a deal on this, giving the donor the recognition he wants, without alienating their students and defying intelligent people across the country.
October 27th, 2009 at 7:32 pmThe states with a reputation for being backward continue to prove that reputation is valid.
mathazar,
Though I haven’t heard of it recently. I remember some time ago about an underground coal fire that covered dozens of square miles (perhaps hundreds) throughout the south that had been burning for somewhere around twenty years and they couldn’t put it out.
I’ll have to see if I can dig up some information on that, does it sound familiar to you?

They should call the dorm and team Green Backs or Moolah.

Sleazy!
October 28th, 2009 at 1:13 amLet’s see, now, the P.E. majors get a dorm named for coal, while the science majors get the shaft?
Can you picture future prospective students on the campus tour, with the tour guide pointing out the basketball dorm, “And this is our famous Coal Hole, home of the newly named Kentucky Bituminous Anthracites basketball team.” It’s sure to draw top-notch students from all over.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:33 amIf this tactic catches on I can predict the University of Iowa naming their athletes dorm the Corn Hole.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:34 amSince the Army Mule is the mascot of West Point, their new athletic dorm would naturally be called the Ass Hole.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:36 amA few points, since unlike the vast majority I actually live in Kentucky.
1) We have some of the cheapest energy in the country thanks to coal.
2) Coal is awful. It is dirty, it has caused the raping of our landscape, illness in the people, and the oppression of generations of mountaineers.
3) This one is to fergus – UK has one of the best science departments in the country as far as public universities. Don’t even try to touch their medical school. You know nothing of what you speak. Best to keep your mouth closed if you don’t want your foot in there, dear.
4) UK had to lay off 80 faculty members this year, and freeze pay (yes, even for the administrators) because of budget cuts. Do you think, under those circumstances, that a donation wouldn’t be accepted no matter who it was coming from?
5) Lexington is solid blue. Good luck finding a Republican in Lexington. The University doesn’t give a damn about politics. They give a damn about keeping their school running and providing support to one of the biggest money and tourism draws in the state – basketball.
Bottom line – I have zero love for coal. I don’t care if there’s a clean way to use it, there’s no safe or environmentally sound way to mine it. But most of you here have managed to do little more than prove that you are completely ignorant of this state, the way coal is used, and how public universities function. Instead of a random knee-jerk attack on that of which you know nothing, try making some sense and speaking from a place of learning and experience.
October 28th, 2009 at 8:33 amIt is a sad commentary when a University needs to take money from a filthy rich, grandiose jerk who makes his money at the expense of our planet and future. He sits all fat and sassy, while doing his part to contribute to climate change.

I don’t know what crowd you run with, but I can’t swing a cat by the tail without hitting one.
October 28th, 2009 at 9:34 amJeez, Smidget, don’t get your panties in a bunch. All I said was that once again the jocks get the cream while the serious learning departments get the curds. I said nothing disparaging about UK’s science dept. Chill.

No, what you said was that PE majors get the goods and the science majors get the shaft.
First of all, the basketball players aren’t, for the most part, PE majors. Most of them have an actual degree program that they are working on such as, oh I don’t know….PHYSICS. A large chunk of them are going into a medical field. You know how I know that? They publish information on the players because the community finds it interesting. Most kids are there to get an education, not to wind up in the NBA. This is the reality of all university athletics.
Second of all, just because the basketball players get a dorm doesn’t mean that the science department, or any other academic department gets the shaft. When someone donates money in the form of an endowment to a university, they don’t get to spend it however they want, they have to spend it as the donor specifies. That is out of the control of the university.
So excuse me for feeling the need to tell you just how pathetically wrong you are, and whether you felt like you insulted the university or not, you did.
October 28th, 2009 at 3:58 pmThis is nothing less than disgusting. Everyone on the planet knows at this point the damage that coal and other fossil fuels are causing to the environment, and yet we’re erecting buildings in its honor?! It just goes to show you that everybody has a price, even if their willing to show how unintelligent they are in the process.
They’ve done themselves a huge disservice by allowing themselves to sell out to the coal industry. Future students and faculty will no doubt take these actions into account before considering to becomes a part of this institution an it’s backwards policies. Way to join the going green movement guys.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:03 pmHello. Lighten up there. The University of Kentucky received a new dorm without using taxpayer funds. People ought to be happy. Who cares what the name is?
