Lieberman Says He’ll Filibuster Health Care Reform If Public Option Remains

liebEarlier this month, when blogger-activist Mike Stark asked Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) if his opposition to the public option meant that he would filibuster a health care reform bill that included one, Lieberman was non-committal, saying “we’ll see” while also warning that there’s a “danger in doing too much.”

In remarks to reporters today, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) moved closer to siding with Republicans and actively blocking reform. Lieberman gave a wishy-washy response, stating that while he was “inclined” to vote to allow health care reform legislation to be debated on the Senate floor, he would “vote against cloture” if “the bill stays as it is now.” TPMDC has Lieberman’s comments:

“I told Senator Reid that I’m strongly inclined — I haven’t totally decided, but I’m strongly inclined — to vote to proceed to the health care debate, even though I don’t support the bill that he’s bringing together because it’s important that we start the debate on health care reform because I want to vote for health care reform this year. But I also told him that if the bill remains what it is now, I will not be able to support a cloture motion before final passage. Therefore I will try to stop the passage of the bill.

Lieberman claims that he wants to “vote for health care reform this year” and that the public option is a sticking point for him. But he also opposed the Baucus bill, which did not contain a public option. Last week, he told NPR, “If I decide in the end the bill that is about to leave the Senate is gonna do more harm than good, then I won’t vote for cloture at that point.”

ThinkProgress previously produced a report titled “Joe Lieberman: The Progressive Who Lost His Way.” View it here.

Update Reid responded to Lieberman's announcement by saying, "Joe Lieberman is the least of Harry Reid's problem[s]."

And LIEberman will continue to wonder why he was booted from the Democratic Party ………..

  2. EnnuiDivine says:

Screw subtlety. If Liberman supports the filibuster, come down on him like the Hammer of Johnson. Kick his ass out of the Caucus, force him to join the GOP. Scrap plans to pass the bill through a typical vote, ram it down with reconciliation.

    Destroy him.

  3. SkepticRising says:

Is anyone actually surprised by this?

  4. zxbe says:

Reid needs to force them into the chamber to debate then. They can filibuster all they like so long as they stand there and debate the bill.

I frequently wondered over the past eight years about how different our country would be today if Al Gore’s 2000 victory had not been stolen out from under him.

. . . . . . . then, I remember that Smokin’ Joe would have been vice president. That really sets up a conflict for me. But, still, Smokin’ Joe would have been marginally better than Darth Cheney I suppose.

It is sad to see that Joey has become a pivotal player in this debate. What a sad legacy he is creating for himself here in his last term in office.

  10. Dave N says:

Anyone who votes against cloture on this is a chickensh*t who is afraid to get their vote recorded, plain and simple.

Playing politics with American lives. It’s the Republican Way.

  11. lm945 says:

The GOP keeps threatening to filibuster, and the Democrats always cave.

If the GOP is so adamant about prevent Americans from having access to quality, affordable health care, then Reid should call their bluff, and make them filibuster. Let America see just who is for the people, and who is for the insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

It’s time to call these jerkwads on their threats. Let Lieberman filibuster. And let his GOP buddies join him.

An actual filibuster will make news. All the media will cover this. And the Americans will see who is holding up the process.

Americans want health care reform. They want an affordable public option. They’re tired of greedheads getting all the money. And they will get fed up enough that they will let their Senators know it. If Lieberman can’t be swayed by his constituents, there may be at least one Republican Senator who can — especially one who’s up for re-election next year.

That’s not your decision to make, Sen Lieberman. That’s the president’s decision. If you want to caucus with the Democrats (as you promised the voters of your state), then you have to not stand in their way. Vote against passage of the bill if you want to remain a Congressional Prostitute for the insurance companies, but don’t you dare vote against cloture. You’ll find yourself kicked off several committees if you keep acting against the Democrats.

  58. David Volsky says:

The public option is the compromise, so the answer to your question is “no.” There has been enough compromise, and they aren’t going to get any Republican votes anyway. The best thing they could do right now is to load up a bill with everything they want and then vote on it, as they will get just as much bipartisanship out of that bill as they are getting out of this one.

I’d rather have none at all, and here’s why – because by allowing states to opt out, which they would do for purely political reasons, they are punishing those who have no say in the opt out. Seeing as the entire plan is optional from the get go, all that having an opt-out accomplishes is the further oppression of the poor (which tend to be from the South and Republican). I will not get behind such a discriminating bill. No opt-out.

    ____________________________________________________________

Right now the sticking point appears to be Lieberman’s vote. And he opposed the Baucus bill WITHOUT a public option of any kind, and now he opposes it WITH a public option — even a public option with an opt-out feature.

Lieberman has made it pretty clear he will oppose any kind of health care reform. There’s really no way to “compromise” with him.

And we’ve already seen how many Republicans are willing to work in a bipartisan fashion.

The public option was a compromise from those who wanted a single payer system for those who didn’t. The opt-out feature is a compromise for the tenthers. The pharmaceutical companies were brought on board with the compromise that their profits weren’t going to be eliminated under the new system, and doctors were brought on board with the compromise that their fees wouldn’t be cut to the bone.

This is plenty of compromise, and it still isn’t enough. When President Obama tried to meet with Republican leaders and offered to put tort reform on the table, he got nothing but crickets chirping when he asked what the Republicans would put on the table in return. The Republicans aren’t interested in compromise. They haven’t given an inch. They are far more interested in destroying the Obama presidency, and they’ve made this crystal clear.

The only thing left to do at this point is to put forth a bill the American people will accept and let the opposition commit political suicide filibustering it.

  139. Wayne A. Schneider says:

It appears that he is one of those few that LIMITS the email to people from Connecticut.

He wants to raise taxes and we’re already in two wars and the economys in the tank…I think there’s so many other more important issues to worry about. And he wants to give healthcare to all the people on welfare and are too lazy to work.”

So I said to him, “well, the people on welfare already have healthcare, he’s just trying to provide for others who don’t have any. I don’t have any, do you?”

Then he says, “I’m over 65 so I’m on medicare” then he looks at me a little disdainfully and departs.

    ____________________________________________________________

I’m not wild about an opt-out feature, but if that’s the only to get a public option, I can live with it.

Because I know that any reform will take some time to implement, it will cause a fair amount of discussion at the state level during the interim about opting out or not. Citizens will demand their governor and state legislators make public their stand on the issue, and elections will be determined by it. I predict a lot of the pompous posturing we’re seeing now will diminish in the glare of glaring voters, although there will still be some who will fit the scenario you describe above.

Even those states who manage to successfully opt out of the public option will be wanting to opt back in once they see how other states are better off with it.

The MediChoice pools will be open to all workers who currently fall through insurance cracks. This includes self-employed, part-time, seasonal and temporary workers. It also will give stay-at-home moms, early retirees over 55 and workers in small companies with less than 50 employees access to affordable health benefits.”

  179. Fred says:

Pipefitter. We worked the crude unit.

I was a superintendent for CTS. Do you know an old timer named Crawford?

  180. smidget says:

One more side note for Fred and then I’m gone for the day – the town I live in has a population roughly equivalent to the number of employees Ashland Oil has on payroll at any given time. Yeah. We also have a Christian college and at least 25 churches. Just to give a little insight into the state of things around here.

The elderly are at diametric odds with the younger of us when it comes to politics. Frankly, they’re THE reason we’re still a dry county. We’re just biding our time. We’re younger than them, we’ll outlive ‘em. :)

  181. Fred says:

    How about Rodney Barbour?

  182. Keith says:

    condour,
couldn’t speak to staff—just busy signal
and could not leave message—mailbox was full

  183. cosmosis says:

In 2006 candidate Lieberman was for national health insurance. But now he’s against it. My guess is that in 2012 Traitor Joe will be for it again.

  184. smidget says:

I don’t personally know him, but I bet a bunch of guys I know do. My ex-boss’ husband has been at the refinery for nearly 30 years, and he’s worked his way up to superintendent. Now he’s about to retire.

Anywho. I’ve got to get going. I’m sure my puppies need to go outside. It was great talking to you. It’s so crazy that you’re familiar with my little corner of the world. Surreal. Take it easy, Fred!

  185. Rich H says:

3,000 people and 25 churches, did I read that right?

  186. smidget says:

Yes Rich, you did. That’s not entirely fair, of course. Some of those churches are outside of the city limits, and when you include all of Carter County and not just Grayson, you’re looking at close to 15,000 people, but that also includes Olive Hill. Of course, if you include all of Carter County, you’re looking at closer to 50 churches. Bible Belt man. It sucks.

    Later taters!

  187. smidget says:

No one more to clarify that – there is a LOT of country around here. A lot of these churches are tiny little places out in the middle of nowhere and will have a congregation of 20 or 30. The church I got married in (more about why an atheist would get married in a church on another day – it wasn’t a religious ceremony, I promise!) only has 80 members and about 40 show up on any given Sunday.

It sounds like a lot, but when you consider the size of most of them, it’s not really. Most people my age don’t go to church on Sundays now that they have grown up and their parents don’t make them anymore.

Okay, I really do have to go now, guys. I’ll talk to you later.

  188. Rich H says:

    Have a good day smidget.

That many churches just boggles the mind. The town I grew up in also had about 3,000 people, but I think we only had three churches.

I guess we must have been pretty godless.

  189. zuch says:

    #164 Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Send Lieberman an e-mail at:

    http://lieberman.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm?regarding=issue

It’s really simple. He even gives you the zip code for Hartford in the upper right hand corner when you are on his contact page.

Holy Joe doesn’t listen to people from Hartford (or New Haven or Bridgeport or New London). They’re those kind of people. Use a West Simsbury or Greenwich or Wilton ZIP code. That’s Joe’s kind of people.

    Cheers,

  190. Whenwillthisnightmareend says:

    Who’s Paying Lieberman? SCUM BAG!

  191. Ape-Man says:

Lieberman needs to grow a soul. Tiny Tim would not approve of this man.

  192. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Lieberman needs to grow a soul. Tiny Tim would not approve of this man.

“God bless us, everyone. Except Joe Lieberman.”

I remember when Tiny Tim said that. How prescient of him. :)

  193. The Dogfather says:

Screw Loserman. Let him try his little attention-grabbing power play — and then shove it up his a$$ by passing healthcare reform by budget reconciliation.

The time for playing is OVER. Kick Loserman to the curb, get Reid off his fence, and let’s get the real leaders of this country to finally get real healthcare reform passed…

  194. Kenneth says:

    LizCoro says:

    ——————————————————————————–

Jeez, what kind people would deny health care to a human being . .

    (shaking my head)

While vacationing in Italy my g/f broke her toe. Hospital treated her and gave her medication. No one asked us for a dime. I asked ‘no bill’ they said, no, senora, go have a good time, be well . .

Socialist bastards!! I’m still in shock . .

So, what you’re saying is you want free stuff wherever you go? AND, who pays for that?

  195. Kenneth says:

You Progressives accuse FoxNews of lying but never back it up with facts or proof.

Here are 7 lies in 2 minutes to think about.

    http://www.theospark.net/2009/09/video-7-lies-in-under-2-minutes.html

  196. Reedroid says:

I hope you guys or another progressive activist group will quickly produce an ad like this to air across Connecticut:

A dark city street; a stretch limo drives along, slows, rolls down a window, a hand beckons to a prostitute hanging on the corner. The hooker approaches the car and leans down; the hand flashes big wads of money. As the hooker gets in, we finally see “her” face: it’s Joe Lieberman. The car drives away and we see logos plastered across it: Aetna, Hartford Life, and all the other big insurance companies (especially those based in Connecticut) that have given him more than a million bucks in the past five years. The license plate reads “Joe.Inc.” As the car drives away, people (maybe identified as Connecticut towns?) try to follow it, calling “Joe.” “Senator Lieberman.” “What about us?” “What about the voters?” etc. The tag line: SUPPORT A PUBLIC OPTION FOR ALL CITIZENS, JOE. Or something of the sort.

If anyone out there is connected to an ad agency or a public policy group that can put together an ad like this, PLEASE go for it!!! It should start running the day Senate debate begins on a health care bill.

  197. humbug72 says:

Kenneth 204 – per the video you referenced – 6 of the supposed ‘lies’ have to do with government transparency. The 7th ‘lie’ is that Justice Brandeis said that ’sunlight is the best disinfectant’.

According to the first few sites I Googled, Brandeis did make that statement. If Brandeis was not the originator of that remark, this is a mis-attribution, not a lie.

Even if every single thing on that video regarding future government transparency turned out not to be true, there are not 6 separate ‘lies’ as the website implies; there are 6 remarks on one subject.

  198. blue state bob says:

I grew up in Connecticut and lived there when Lieberman ran for senate the same year he ran for VP, always knew this piece of fecal matter was a snake in the grass and 2000 proved it to me. He truly is one of the most vile, disgusting piece of trash ever to reside in that state. And to think he represents CT in the senate. Really glad I moved.

But is anyone surprised?? This vain little man can’t stand to see himself out of the spotlight and not on television, which is strange when you look at how truly ugly he is, on the inside and out.

  199. tojby_2000 says:

The approach to Lieberman has been all wrong. The White House should send Hillary to have a sit-down with the Israeli ambassador and promise him another advanced jet fighter in return for Joe’s cooperation.

  200. EdgeOnIt says:

Health care reform will help doctors, who man the most complicated machines, and who are ostensibly the most highly educated population in society. An American education always functions to embed democratic ideas and principles, within those traditional academic subjects that are taught. In addition, medical professionals are popularly rated as one of the most highly valued heterogeneous groups, in our society!

IMO, our higher education system may yet be the finest avenue available after highschool, there are ample useful materials, and high quality library staffers. Those lucky students who successfully graduate with a degree, will have completed the study of a particularized ‘circle of knowledge’, whereas intellectually, they will reside within those curricular boundaries, which provide safety and security to each and every degree-holder, and which expand that safety and security toward each and every community. Let’s support our highly educated doctors! Support health care reforms, now TP!!

  201. Crazy Cat Lady says:

smidget – You are completely credible. You state your opinion as such, you smack down trolls hard but gracefully, usually after you give them a chance to actually SAY something, you are not arrogant or just pushing one point 24/7! Now if you were only 22 we might have a problem…

    ;-)

  202. EugeneDebs says:

Kenneth is brainwashed and VERY stupid. Kenneth is also a LIAR. Why do you lie so much Kenneth? What part of being a liar, a moron, and a punkass troll excites you so much?
