Joe Lieberman is afraid to debate Rachel Maddow on health reform.

For the past couple of nights on her MSNBC show, Rachel Maddow has skewered Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) for his stated willingness to filibuster health reform. Decrying his “demonstrably and obviously untrue arguments” about the public option, Maddow told her audience last night that Lieberman could end up being “the reason we won’t get health reform if we don’t get health reform.” For his part, Lieberman appears afraid of defending his views to Maddow’s face. Last night, Maddow reported:

I also want to tell our viewers that we invited Senator Lieberman to come onto this show tonight. His office did not even bother to respond to our requests.

Senator Lieberman, you should know you have an open invitation — as you long have had — to come on this show. I promise you will get a fair shake. Actually, at this point, I promise to not only buy you a shake, I will buy you a cookie if you come on this show.

Rachel is both – rolled into one wicked smart package. She makes me *very* proud.

  5. EnnuiDivine says:

All snake-like politicians and industry leaders fear facing a tough, but fair, interview from one of the best in the business. If it didn’t mean her having to give up the primetime slot, Rachel should be hosting Meet the Press.

Joe the Bummer and his wife are major shills for the health insurance cabal.

There is no need for debate, as far as they are concerned.

They have made a huge pile of money from their health insurance buddies.

CroxNews is a crock of lies, and I am so sick of good blog space wasted by GOPshite trolls peddling their lines.

Senator Joe “Aetna” Lieberman doesn’t have a view. He just does what he is told by those who own him.

Senator Joe “Aetna” Lieberman is the senator from the “Insurance” state of Connecticut. 160 insurance companies are headquarted there.

[sigh] Ask a troll a question and they just vote you down.

    USNclerk,

Watching Rachel debate a guest is glorious. She actually presses them on their background (be it shady financial dealings, links to lobbys, et.al.) and won’t give up until she gets an answer (or she physically runs out of time).

And STORM is about as threatening as a mist. I’d say DRIZZLE is more apt a name.

  18. Dave N says:

Yet, LIEberman will go on FAUX News (aka, the GOP Network) to tell “his side”.

This leopard is now showing his true spots. He’s lumped in with all the cowardly Repiggies who are afraid to face the facts and get their lunch handed to them by the likes of Rachel Maddow.

Dump his arse out of the caucus and strip him of his subcommittee chairmanship.

  22. Democrat Soldier says:

Fromer Pres. Bush (God, how I LOVE saying that!) has ALWAYS been afraid of any news agency that would report the news, like MSNBC and CNN. Dubya only liked Faux News because they refused to report the truth, and only repoorted the pro-right-whiner news!

Sen. Lieberman is afraid to debate anyone who is well read about the subject to be debated. Sen. Lieberman should be given a pair of flip-flops to go along with his shake & cookies. Sen. Lieberman is exactly like the Republican majority party: flip-flopers on just about every subject for which they “claim” to stand. Republicans are the masters at hypocrisy, as they’ve spent decades in “bait & switch” and “flip-flop” policies. The best and most notorious example is they “claim” to be the party of fiscal responsibility and they are the ones who doubled the national debt in 8 years and increased deficit spending with not one word of complaint from the then-Republican leadership!

Sen. Lieberman, just throw off your charade of being anything other than what you truly are: a political whore who will bow down to anyone for another 15 minutes of press time. You will NOT be missed when you lose your re-election in 2010!

Rachel Maddow’s show is one of the very few places on tv where people with differing views can have a fair and balanced debate. Her debate with Tommy Ridge is a great example of this.

Jellyfish Joe would have a fair chance to voice his side and Rachel would politely express her side.

  29. makete says:

Rachel is sooo cute! I love her and would tell her but she would probaly think that I was a stocker. But if she is reading this (and she does come on here some) I just want her to know that I am also proud of her and so glad that she got her show and love the way she handles the people who come on her show whether they be Dems or Reps.

  30. P.D. says:

LIEberman an Liz Cheney would NEVER go on Rachel or Keith’s shows. They would rather stick with Faux News or CNN Lite. That way they can spout thier Bullsh*t and won’t get called on it. Disgraceful ain’t it?

  31. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

It seems to me that once Lieberman felt the spotlight and special status of being a VP candidate that he became addicted to standing out (”palinization”?. In his recent FOX interview he justified not voting for cloture with his Democratic caucus by stating that the Senate rules are there for his use to block what he sees as bad for the country. He now has a special status once again.

    _____________________________________________________________

And if Lieberman could come up with a compelling argument that Rachel Maddow “doesn’t want to engage in the truth,” he might have a valid point.

However, Maddow would probably question Lieberman on his assertion that a public option would cause private insurance companies to raise their premiums, as she has a low tolerance for empty soundbites with no convincing backup. And this is what Lieberman wants to avoid.

Not quite the same thing as President Obama being fed up with the FNC lie machine.

The difference is that Ms. Maddow truly wants to debate and will give Sen. Lieberman time to talk. Mr. O’Rielly will yet “Shut up!” and refust to let Rep Grayson the chance to talk.

Faux news is right-whiner controlled, so they’ll refuse to let anyone else get a rational word in edge-wise.

One thing you will see on Rachael’s show is, Lieberman would be treated with respect and given a chance to make his points. What you won’t see is, being yelled at, talked over, having quotes taken out of context, belittled or having your mike cut. You would not be called a pin head, un-american or a commie, nazi or a teabagger.

For all you Fox trolls out there, this is the difference from a real news show and that three ring circus you folks watch.

  65. mary lacewing says:

Not sure why O’Reilly’s name came up but Thank You Rachel!

We certainly need as many people as possible to use their platforms to help shine the light on the obstacles in the way of TRUE health care reform.

And Joe L. certainly seems to be one of those obstacles. I imagine that it’s possible that he’s concerned about job losses in CT due to the possibility of health insurance companies downsizing if they can’t figure out how to compete effectively (i.e. evolve), but I think that it’s more probable that he’s looking at his nice fat bank account due to insurance company contributions.

And if he decided to really do the right thing he would represent ALL of his constituents in CT (like myself) by helping pass health care reform instead of hindering it.

I would like to watch it to see if she really does give him a fair shake. I kind of doubt it though–she’s the mirror reflection of Bill O’Reilly. This country is way too polarized. I can’t stand Keith Olbermann but so far Maddow is interesting to watch even though her perspective is tilted 85 degrees to the left.

Bill O’reilly does the same thing. He dares people to come on his show and, if they don’t immediately stand to attention, he concludes that they are afraid of him. This is just part of the media circus.

Oh yeah, Olbermann is fun to watch, and his stuff is generally tabloid-ish, but he’s basically a foil to fox’ lying and misreporting. Tweety (Chris Matthews) is like jell-o, you can mold him to any shape or form that happens to fit the mood in Foggy Bottom.

The rest of the putative journalists are pikers compared to Rachel.

  93. MapleStreet says:

Based on his recent “media” interviews, it seems like he has gone exclusively to talking in Faux.

  94. clodale says:

Lieberman is the poster boy for political bribery. Unless we find a way to stop politicians from accepting money from companies or individuals who would benefit from legislation the politicians can write or not write, we’re in a losing battle. Recall that Sens. Baucus and Lieberman are two of the recipients of the largest amounts of bribery from the insurance/health care industry. And until Democrats start referencing this form of bribery, I won’t be voting for them either.
