Colbert signs petition to ‘Close Gitmo Now.’

Last week, a group of international musicians that includes Trent Reznor, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, and others joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo and filed Freedom of Information Act requests seeking to declassify all secret government records pertaining to how music was used in detainee interrogations in Guantanamo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Last night, Roseanne Cash promoted the cause on The Colbert Report, where she successfully got the host to sign a petition calling for the closing of the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Watch it:

Johnny Cash was a personal hero of mine. I’m going to need a minute.

  3. hellinabucket says:

need a minute? How about a clue? or a sense of community? or how about a lesson in fact finding. You are going to need a lot more than a minute.

The man in black is proud of his daughter. Hell, he spoke out about social injustice long before the best part of you dribbled down your mother’s leg.

  4. po says:

10 days . . . that’s all it would take to close it down. 10 days.

We’re going on 10 months. Close Gitmo Now.

Gee, Doug Hoffman, if only you lived your and Toby Keith’s cowboy fantasies in 2002-2003 we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

But you and your team didn’t (just like they didn’t do squat to prepare for the “sucker punch” telegraphed years before), so here we are. You should go back and swig your PBR, cry in your sleeve because your “Mother Freedom” was really Karl Rove’s whore wrapped in the flag and while your pants were down he got you to salute.

And you should really shut the hell up about lighting things up. Didn’t you hear, this month was the worst month for deaths of Americans in Afghanistan. All because you and yours prefer fiction to reality. And I bet you think yourself a patriot.

  7. hellinabucket says:

    No, theres not Toby Keith.

  8. Virtual Pebble says:

Hm. Is it possible that trolldom will finally understand that Colbert is a satirist, that he’s a faux-conservative, not a Fox-conservative? Ah, probably not. That takes at least half a wit more than our troll buddies possess, individually and en masse.

I’d say post an on-line petition but the idiots would tag it and slather it with neo-nutzi grafitti, So I’ll just write my President, Senators and Congresscritter.

    John Lennon said . . .

    Imagine there’s no countries
    It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion, too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

You may say I’m a dreamer
but I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
and the world will live as one

  10. Doug Hoffman says:

John Lennon had the same last name as the commie dictator of Russia. Case closed.

  11. NinerFan says:

Doug Hoffman: “John Lennon had the same last name as the commie dictator of Russia. Case closed.”

Well, yes, for morons, cased closed.

  12. NinerFan says:

John Lennon (note to morons: “Lennon”, not “Lenin”):

“And if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow.”

  13. NinerFan says:

Doug Hoffman: “Johnny Cash was a personal hero of mine.”

You do know that he thought of himself as a liberal, right? Do you remember his publicly stated reason for wearing black? (Hint: It wasn’t because he had gained weight.)

  14. NinerFan says:

One of the funniest things about Steven Colbert: when told that a significant percentage of his viewers are conservatives who don’t get the “meta-joke,” he’s absolutely delighted.

Bonus Steven Colbert fun-fact: He teaches Sunday School.

  15. livelongandprosper says:

note to morons: “Lennon”, not “Lenin

But, but, it sounds the same!

LOL. Great display of prejudices that predominate Republican thought.

  16. Ape-Man says:

    I thought they closed Gitmo!

  17. Doug Hoffman says:

NinerFan, he wore black because he was stuck in Folsom prison. Try another one wise guy.

  19. NinerFan says:

Hoffman, wise up. He wrote a song explaining himself called “The Man in Black.” It was also one of his greatest albums. Here you go in the man’s own words.

“Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there’s a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he’s a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you’d think He’s talking straight to you and me.

Well, we’re doin’ mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin’ cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we’re reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought ‘a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin’ for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen’ that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen’ that we all were on their side.

Well, there’s things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin’ everywhere you go,
But ’til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You’ll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I’d love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything’s OK,
But I’ll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
‘Till things are brighter, I’m the Man In Black.”

Now, please, Hoffman, know when to just give it up and shut up.

  20. NinerFan says:

Hey Duke. That’s what people say about you around here:

    “Mr. Duke? BFD.”

  21. muntaba says:

    Doug Hoffman says:

NinerFan, he wore black because he was stuck in Folsom prison. Try another one wise guy.

    Wrong answer.

You may want to check out the lyrics in a certain song about wearing black

  22. Doug Hoffman says:

He was stuck in Folsom prison and time kept dragging on.

  23. wldj says:

Expecting any troll to truly understand any artist is futile. They only understand soundbites, they truly don’t even understand what they are told to understand. Words or song lyrics are taken out of context so the simple minded trolls have something to talk about among themselves. John Lennon a communist? Give me a freaking break! Not just John Lennon but The Beatles to this day still inspire millions of people all across our world to think… not react, kinda a big difference at least in my opinion.

  24. muntaba says:

doug hoffman, Folsom Prison Blues is not about wearing black. It’s not an autobiographical song either. The song you should refer to is man in black. And he was your personal hero you say?

  25. 1984 says:

Hah hah, I’m glad I read the comments.
I’m surprised no one complained about the Marx brothers.

  26. EugeneDebs says:

    Doug

    STFU you ignorant punkass troll
