Earlier this week, extreme anti-choice activist Randall Terry launched a contest to encourage people to make videos burning House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) in effigy. “Who Can make the best ‘Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid BURN IN HELL!‘ video?” said Terry’s press release. At the Democratic rally yesterday announcing the House’s health care reform bill, a heckler called out, “Nancy Pelosi, you’ll burn in hell for this.” Apparently, this violent rhetoric and claims of damnation was funny to the folks at Fox and Friends, who laughingly re-enacted the heckling on their show this morning. Watch it:
Previously on Fox News, Glenn Beck joked about putting poison in Pelosi’s wine.
CroxNews is God’s “Christian” network, full of the publicly pious who revel in the misfortunes of others, without a shred of dignity or charity for the unfortunate.
These sorts of people are symptoms of an incredibly ailing, sick and twisted form of evangelicalism run rampant in this nation.
October 30th, 2009 at 11:44 amSure, burning in hell is funny to Fox and Friends now……
October 30th, 2009 at 11:46 amSo, comparing this situation to the Christian reaction to the hate crimes bill: Doing good things for people (like getting everyone health coverage) will cause you to burn in hell. Not being allowed to beat people is preventing you from doing Jesus’ work.
I’m sensing a pattern here.
October 30th, 2009 at 11:47 amHuh Huh Huh. That heckler made a veiled threat about the Speaker of the House.
It’s funny ’cause she’s a Liberal.
Huh Huh Huh.
Will they still be laughing if one of their deranged viewers actually attacks Pelosi?
October 30th, 2009 at 11:47 amPreviously on Fox News, Glenn Beck joked about putting poison in Pelosi’s wine.
I blame this seeming desensitization of authoritarian mindsets on television. This eliminationist fantasy sounds like something from a Murder She Wrote episode, or a Matlock case.

Got to love how it says not a scientific poll. How fitting for a movement that doesn’t believe in science.
October 30th, 2009 at 12:03 pmWhile I admit that the ever-escalating ridiculousness of the wingnuts’ efforts to discredit this presidency and this Congress has a certain laughable quality to it, it takes some really sick minds to get a lot of ha-has out of the idea of people burning.
But then, this is the mindset that jokes about poisoning people, killing off Supreme Court justices, and wishing that terrorists fly into the New York Times building — all real knee-slappers to them.
October 30th, 2009 at 12:03 pmOh Yeah, Ha Ha, really hysterical! WTF Is wrong with these people. Heaven FORBID if you uttered a word about King George! Heaven FORBID you said anything negative about his policies. These people would have called you a traitor or worse, a terrorist sympathizer! God Damn. They don’t even try anymore. October 30th, 2009 at 12:15 pmIt would appear that if you are a Christian today, you embrace violence towards women and anyone who is not like you, with hate, intolerance and hypocrisy.
The teachings of Jesus these Christians are said to be so deeply devoted to? Not so much.
At first blush it would appear that there is a conflict between Jesus teachings as recorded in the 4 Gospels and the beliefs in those teachings by his followers today. But, no worries.
Christians are fixing that little problem busily rewriting the bible to take out the “liberal bios” from that pesky Jesus making safe the world for “real Christians” like Randall Terry and everyone at Fox.
Need more proof? Where is the outcry and condemnation from the larger Christian world at the outrage of rewriting the bible or the murders of people in their churches?

October 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pmI dont like airing any facet of my life in a public forum but sometimes current discourse twists my arm that I have to say something.
My younger brother, in NM, went thru a divorce recently, he went the depression route and began using abusing his psyche meds and doing other hard drugs [cocaine, speed] and went a bit nutso and lost his visitation rights with his three children because of his actions. He didnt, nor did I, have the money to send him to rehab, he ended up in state run rehab for a bit but had lost, by his actions, his apartment and everything he owned. He nearly died and frittered away all he owned.
He eventually found help with a christian group who put him into a year long program, they have helped him turn his life around and got his visitation with his kids reinstated. He is doing much better now. If he finds the church to his liking and it helps him cope, so be it.
There are many good people put there and so I ask that people dont paint christians into the same corner as these cynical biased and spiteful people who use religion as a rational for their predjudices.
Thanks.

Thank you for sharing that painful story, and I’m glad that it has a happy ending.
I’m a Christian, and I almost hesitate to mention it because of the fear people will assume that bigots like Pat Robertson and Terry Randall speak for me. They most definitely do not.
I believe there are far more Christians out there like those who helped your brother — those who are far more interested in following the teachings of Jesus than warping the bible to fit their bigotry. Jimmy Carter, for example, is this kind of Christian.
The problem is that we don’t have too many microphones, and are usually drowned out by the shrillness of the Robertsons of the world. And we resent that our faith has been hijacked by those who only use it to hate.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:04 pmMiss Molly, with respect, I have to say I’m getting tired of that old excuse. Christians have been sitting around on their asses quietly nodding now for decades as their leaders have cheapened and destroyed civil public discourse in this country and I’m sick of them. At any time, Christians could have risen up and publicly denounced any of these demagogues who have been shooting their mouths off. But you don’t do it. You sit in your pews and pray as if that’s going to do anything at all.
If Christians really cared about the un-Christian behavior of their Christian leaders, they’d get the hell up out of their pews and walk out on these charlatans. They would publicly denounce their pastors for taking un-Christ-like political opinions and spreading them from the alter.
Yeah, yeah, they don’t represent you…. we’ve heard that before.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:14 pmIs anyone really surprised at the reaction of FOX regarding the threat to Pelosi? Or Glennbeck’s comment? FOX is a cesspool of hatred and ridicule of the “other”. The “other” being anyone who is not a FOX REPUBLICAN. The only way to combat this hatred is to shine light on it and see if the cockroaches scramble.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:26 pmThis from a group of people who are hell-bound themselves because of their hate, smearing, lies, & ridiculing of others.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:27 pmFox Bimbo: Oh my God…!
Can you imagine if this happened to Boehner, McConnell or former speaker of the house Dennis Hastert? Fox and fiends would be wailing, weeping and gnashing their teeth over it.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:28 pmXisithrus @ 32 says:
“Beck does not follow the christian religion but the mormon one.”
Technically true. Christianity is well marketed and has many “brand names” and Mormonism is but one of hundreds but the question is:
Who would Beck as a Mormon Christian say he’s more in league with? Randall Terry and what he stands for or Jesus? His actions say the former.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pmPlain and simply put, there is a large group of people in our country who claim to be Christians but are in name only, these people much like the Islamic extremists give the rest of the Christians and Muslims a bad name.
The Christian leaders like Robertson, Hagee and Van Impe to me are the false prophets which the bible warns about. These peddlers of hate and fear twist the words of God around to fit and push their agenda while making mega profits off of the word of God.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:34 pmXisithrus: “There are many good people put there and so I ask that people dont paint christians into the same corner as these cynical biased and spiteful people who use religion as a rational for their predjudices.”
Really? Why haven’t we heard them speak up? Where in the Christian community is there wide-spread support for a repudiation of people like Robertson? Christians keep whining that we shouldn’t lump them all together. Why shouldn’t we? What have liberal Christians done to mitigate this heretical religious/political message?
October 30th, 2009 at 1:35 pmNinerFan @ 62says: What have liberal Christians done to mitigate this heretical religious/political message?
————————————————————–
First of all you are witnessing some liberal Christians here at TP who are denouncing the heretical/political message of the religious right.
Second of all, perhaps the ‘normal’ Christians out there face the wrath and ridicule of their Christian peers if they take a stand and don’t believe it’s worth it knowing that people see these people for what they really are.
Yeah, I know a true Christian isn’t suppose to care what others think when it comes to fighting for what is right but do you honestly believe that if all the sudden liberal Christians all over the country stood up and spoke up against the nutjobs in the religious right will really change anything?
October 30th, 2009 at 1:42 pmTo all my Christian friends here:
When I speak of these hateful, hate-spewing, mouth-breathing morons, I always use “Christians” – i.e., I use quotation marks to indicate my firm belief that these haters are NOT in any way real, authentic Christians.
Just as I use quotation marks when I refer to FOX “News”…
MissMolly, PLC – please rest easy.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pmIn my world I try to stay as far away from these so called Christians of the religious right. You can’t debate them, you can’t persuade them to see the error in their thinking. You can’t get them to see that they are not following the teachings of Jesus Christ, so what is the point, you can only talk to a brick wall for so long.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:46 pmThank you, Leftside Annie!
October 30th, 2009 at 1:48 pmUncle Fester: “Second of all, perhaps the ‘normal’ Christians out there face the wrath and ridicule of their Christian peers if they take a stand and don’t believe it’s worth it knowing that people see these people for what they really are.”
Right. Peer pressure. Whatever. I left the church over crap like this. If they don’t think their peers are following the word of Jesus, they’re free to leave as well. Sitting there quietly is what they’ve done up to now. What? Do they think God would punish them for leaving an institution that is daily sullying his name?
October 30th, 2009 at 1:59 pmmissmolly: “I’m a Christian, and I almost hesitate to mention it because of the fear people will assume that bigots like Pat Robertson and Terry Randall speak for me. They most definitely do not.”
I’m pretty sure that’s true. But tell me please why more Christians don’t stand up and protest in real time. It’s one thing to complain to a bunch of progressives, but the real action is in those churches on Sunday morning. When the pastor spews hate, why don’t people get up and walk out?
October 30th, 2009 at 2:02 pmRead up on Doocy. He’s a member of the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, for God’s sake!

October 30th, 2009 at 3:37 pmReally? Why haven’t we heard them speak up? Where in the Christian community is there wide-spread support for a repudiation of people like Robertson?
Thats a good question but I dont attend any churches of any deomination. I was not speaking of my belief system but that of my brothers and he/they certainly dont act make statements like Robertson or these pundits.
Why would the entire christian community with many denomnations watch Robertson to even know what he is saying to repudiate?
October 30th, 2009 at 3:45 pmDid this happen during the supposed “news” portion of Fox’s broadcast, or during the supposed “entertainment” portion?
October 30th, 2009 at 3:50 pmXisithrus: “Why would the entire christian community with many denomnations watch Robertson to even know what he is saying to repudiate?”
Robertson’s views are no secret. Nobody has to go to church to know what kind of crap he’s dishing out. But, many times, the media has presented him as the political and social voice of Christianity. Every time he vomits out some new outrage, all I hear is “well, I’m a Christian and I don’t agree.” I’m just saying stand up and say it in real time. If your pastor spreads hate, get up and walk out. And how about some public statements repudiating Robertson.
Ted Turner once outraged everyone by saying that Christians were wimps. This is the kind of thing he was talking about.
October 30th, 2009 at 3:53 pmThe only reason I know ludicrous things Robertson said recently is because of this site and I am repudiating his persecution of others.
October 30th, 2009 at 3:53 pmRobertson’s views are no secret.
Of course not but I have no desire to go turn on the TV to find out what he is saying.
October 30th, 2009 at 3:54 pmEvery time he vomits out some new outrage, all I hear is “well, I’m a Christian and I don’t agree.” I’m just saying stand up and say it in real time
I did, just like you have here.
October 30th, 2009 at 3:57 pmWhen the pastor spews hate, why don’t people get up and walk out?
Your asking the wrong person here, I agree with what you say but somehow, because of something I wrote about my brother and his church you seem to assume I attend that church or some other on a regular basis. I dont.
October 30th, 2009 at 4:00 pmHell is a “pagan” concept, it’s not Jewish or “Christian” in origin. Hell doesn’t exist, never did, never will.

_____________________________________________________________
Funny you should mention that — I have actually left TWO churches under those exact circumstances. The first one was when the pastor went into a diatribe against gays, how “evil” their lifestyle was, how they could be “delivered”, and how we should shun them until that happened. My walkout was obvious to everyone, because I sang in the choir and was in full view of everyone. This was followed by an open letter to the entire church, where I resigned my membership and gave a detailed explanation of why.
The second time I left a Sunday School class because the teacher chose to illustrate the enemies of the Israelites by comparing them to modern day Democrats (naturally, modern-day Republicans represented God’s Chosen People). This time, I stood up and told the teacher how un-Christian and hateful I thought his teaching methods were before I walked out.
I’m not alone. I now attend a church that focuses on what I consider to be Christian values. And it’s full of people who have become disenchanted with the stranglehold the televangelists and megachurch pastors have on the faith. We do speak out. But it’s kind of hard when nobody listens.
My best friend is a Muslim who lived in New York at the time of 9/11. As you can imagine, she has endured a great deal of anti-Muslim sentiment since then. Right after that horrible event, she joined a “Muslims Against Terrorism” group in NYC, whose mission was to publicly denounce the acts of the terrorists and educate people about Islam. Guess what? Despite holding many public events, they never got any press. She still seethes when she hears people claim “I don’t hear Muslims denouncing the 9/11 terrorists.” They do. Constantly. But you never hear about it.
It’s the same thing on my side of the fence. What am I supposed to do — walk the streets with a bullhorn 24/7?
October 30th, 2009 at 5:43 pmIt seems so long ago when AMERICANS could debate and argue policy like adults and in the end, do what was right for the entire country. Today, not so much. Both the Democrats and what seems to represent the GOP seem bitter, politics driven, idiots. The dems because they have no backbone nor courage as evidenced by the Iraq War votes, and now the seeming inability to enact anything meaningful to correct the crimes of the prior administration. THe GOP has sold thier soul to idiot radio talk show hosts and thier uneductated listeners. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2010. As for me, I give up.
