Pat Robertson on hate crimes bill: ‘The noose has tightened around the necks of Christians.’

Yesterday on the Christian Broadcasting Network, televangelist Pat Robertson aired a segment slamming President Obama for signing the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law. Extending hate crimes protection to the gay and transgendered community, Robertson argued, was a targeted attack on homophobic Christians like himself. Robertson said the new law is the latest example of a “noose” tightening around “the necks of Christians.” Later in the segment, he implied Democrats in Congress were “opposed to many of the fundamental Christian beliefs”:

PAT ROBERTSON: The noose has tightened around the necks of Christians to keep them from speaking out on certain moral issues. And it all was embodied in something called the Hate crimes bill that President Obama said was a major victory for America. I’m not sure if America was the beneficiary. [...] We have voted into office a group of people who are opposed to many of the fundamental Christian beliefs of our nation. And they hold to radical ideology, and they are beginning put people sharing their points of view into high office. And not only that, they not only have control of both houses of Congress.

Robertson, who has a long history of preaching vitriolic homophobia, declared earlier this year that gay marriage would lead to a “legalization of polygamy, bestiality, child molestation and pedophilia.”

Matthew Shepard had a real one put aroung his neck, in part simply because of his different sexual orientation.     Hmm… I took several years of Catholic instruction and graduated from a premier Catholic university, and I don’t recall hatred of gays being a “fundamental Christian belief”.

    And I know Pat flatters himself that this is a “Christian nation” but it’s not. The underlying principles that guided the founders were those of the Enlightenment, not the Church.

    So double fail, Pat. Try again.

    Well, let’s see, this so-called “Christian” seems to be spouting heresy, since Christ distinctly said (thus commanded) that after loving God the next imperative for a follower of Christ is to “love your neighbor as your self,” and then he goes on, in the parable of the Good Samaritan, to clearly define your ‘neighbor’ as anyone you encounter.

    Recognizing that ALL people have dignity, regardless of behavior that you may not feel comfortable about, is Gospel, Mr. Robertson. No escape from the fundamentals of the Faith you claim to follow.

    Seeing as “hate crimes” laws only apply to situations where the underlying behaviour is criminal in the first instance, is Robertson saying that this law unfairly singles out some Christian criminals for additional punishment? Or is he saying that all Christians are inherently criminal? Are you allowed to drag a man a half mile behind your truck if you have good ole Cris’shun love in your heart for him? Beat someone and tie them on a fence post to die as long as you do it with Cris’shun care and concern? Hard to determine….

And, even if you are a bigot, as long as you don’t actually go and kill or harm someone you have nothing to fear from this legislation. Pat Robertson seems to be fighting for the right not just to discriminate with impunity, but also to cause bodily harm to those he hates.

    I guess it’s a slippery slope. First you couldn’t beat up people for being black. Then you couldn’t beat them up for being jewish. Now, you can’t beat them up for being gay. What’s next? You just can’t beat anyone up at all?

    I am very unclear on something regarding the Matthew Shepard Act or other hate crime legislation. What difference does it make to define a crime as a “hate crime”, which is what the Matthew Shepard Act calls for.

    Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson are serving 2 consecutive life sentences with no chance for parole. It’s not like the judge said “oh…wait…you killed a gay kid….in that case you get a lesser sentence”.

    Crime is crime regardless of the “hate” label, and should be punished accordingly.

    Hate speech should never be protected under the first amendment. Congress should amend the Matthew Shepherd Hate Crimes Prevention Act with a ban on hate speech so idiots like Pat Robertson goes where he belongs. In Prison. His hateful bile is responsible for the many hate crimes inflicted on gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals, transgenders, blacks and others the haters like himself who have fallen victim to hate crimes.

    Hate speech is a hate crime and must be treated as such.

    Hate Crimes means you can’t physically attack, torture, and/or kill. These also seem outside the teachings of Christ who ate with publicans, sinners, and harlots.

    You can still preach all you want that it is an abomination (although the scriptural evidence is questionable – as the major verse on this in Revelations includes “the effeminate” in a list of those who will not be in Heaven. But also in that list are the adulterers, liars, etc.).

    In regards to my comment at 105, I have first hand experience of republicans (religious right)who use scripture as a way to prove that the end is near and that Christians are under attack as was spoken of during the tribulation.

    My sister and her husband are huge supporters of Michele Bachmann and during a ‘debate’ over Bachmann, my sister pointed out that Bachmann is being attacked because she is a Christian just like it states in the bible.

    Evangelical Christians are in the habit of making a mockery of martyrdom. Rather than seeing the horror of it, they vicariously identify with it in the most flimsy ways. Maybe that self-crucification kit I’ve designed in my head would sell. It would have a big cardboard cross they could drag around. That would necessarily call into question their practices, personal and private. Most of these leaders could not withstand scrutiny as to how they raise money and what it is spent on. Most of the televangelists live a very high lifestyle with expensive homes, cars, etc., while many of their flock have a mediocre lifestyle.

    Marion “Pat” Robertson is a fraud. He claims to be a Christian even though one of his first adult decisions was to dishonor his parents by rejecting his given name. Since then it’s just gotten worse. The only things that are even real to this POS are his ego, his greed, and the voices in his head.

    The sad part though, is that millions buy his shtick. Until such time as we reject all the childish fantasies of religion? We live with the constant danger of falling into another dark age. In fact, one could argue that we’ve been in a dark age from the moment Ronnie Raygun legitimized these snake oil salesmen. The continuing hold that foolish dogma has upon good, though unsophisticated, people just may be the single greatest threat to human survival.

    I don’t know myself, but a two of items that certainly contributed:

    He is from a wealthy, politically endowed family (father was Absalom Robertson). I wonder if there is a connection with “The Family” of C Street fame ?

    He forged pioneered the TV church at a time when this was a novel approach. Of course, there are questions about his political connections providing access to this market.

    In the beginning, he seemed a fairly reasonable person. He then leveraged his prestige to all sorts of areas including recommending investments in gold which he reportedly may have some connections.

    Looking at the hate crime law, I would remind him that there was a time, within my lifetime, where churches were used as a point of meeting to make plans on how to string up dark-skinned people.

    Why would any Christian be concerned about limits on hate crimes? I mean, the phrase “hate crime” does have the word “crime” in it. It’s not a hate crime, unless a crime has been committed.

    So, is Pat saying that Christians are being prevented from committing a crime, and that hinders people like him?

    Don’t worry, Pat. They didn’t pass a law against “hating”, just criminal acts based on hate. So, please, feel free to continue to hate in an unrestricted fashion.

    Hm “Christian beliefs of our nation”. I did not know we were a Christian nation. Nor do I beleive they are fundamental. What’s fundmental of this nation is a thing called the Constitution and Bill of Rights. And apparently Pat’s not familiar with it.

    Pat apparently didn’t take note that a majority of our founding fathers did force practice of any religion. Actually, our founding fathers were happy because they were escaping the religious persecusion occuring in Europe at the time. Therefore, they didn’t care much if you did or didn’t practice a religion……that’s why there’s this thing called “seperation of church and state” which is evident in the First Amendment.

    So Pat. Stop projecting your ideals and misconstrued interpretation of history on others, especially your followers.

    We aren’t either. The right wing extremists are prone to revisionist history. Just like the Taliban/Al Qaeda likes to rewrite the values of Islam to mean the most heinous and distorted representation possible.

    Our founding fathers were in rejection of “Christian and Fundamentalist” ideas, being children of the “Enlightenment”. That’s why we don’t talk about “Jesus” in the founding documents, and why we have separation of church and state.

    The Christian fundies in the US are just as dangerous and radical as the Islamic and Jewish radicals of the middle east.

Pat Robertson has been an associate of theirs for many years; they use him only cautiously though because he is so wacko. All who want to know about “The Family” must read the book by that name by Jeff Sharlett. It will educate you on what this powerful organization has done to the world under the false flag of so-called Christianity. Their basic belief is that powerful men are such because God chose them and made them powerful to do his will – therefor, they believe, anything they do is God’s will and though it might be illegal or disgraceful for others, it is OK for them. And they defend each other vehemently. You may recall that G. W. Bush actually said that he believed that whatever he did was God’s will. PLEASE READ THE BOOK!

    It’s people like Pat who are causing young people to flee. Many young Evangelicals are shunning thier parents beliefs and concentrating on things THEY consider important. The Environment, Social Justice and poverty. To many young people, their elders only care about homosxuality and abortion.

    It’s not just in the evangelical church; there are many people in my own denomination (presbyterian) who say the exact same things about abortion and homosexuality, but then again, they tend to be older (50’s or 60’s ish), and they are only a small minority. The sad thing is, my denomination is one of the more liberal denominations out there. This is why I left the Republican Party…

    Actually, amazing that Robertson thinks it is fine to support any group that supports lynching or killing of someone who is gay. I think he forgets the Scripture that says, “Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.” But the problem with such doctrinaire Christians is that they totally misunderstand the Lord’s provision for free will choices and for his instructions for those of us who name his name to be loving and Christ-like and to judge not lest we be judged. Perhaps the sin of hateful attitudes may qualify for a disclaimer on that brand of Christianity.

    Actually, Robertson misses the entire command of Jesus and that is that we need to be kind to those who oppose us and to do good for them. His jaded idea of Christianity is the noose around Christiana’s neck. Jesus himself is recorded to have associated himself with sinners. all this palaver by the silly Christians who feel so superior to others is not Christ Like in the least bit. They make a mockery of the gospel. My own family had the beautiful ministry of the Church when my Stepdad got drunk and beat up my little brother. We were poor, poor, poor and as I grew up, I felt so grateful that this Salvation Army Captain could see past our undone situation ahead to what our entire family could become. Thank God that they were not the judgmental prigs that the far right are today. We would still be in the poor trough. They lovingly taught us to clean up, dress up and to speak up. Thanks Orval.

    Adams also remarked:
