ThinkFast: October 30, 2009

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Rep. Pete Sessions (TX) said yesterday that the GOP would “welcome” Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman into its ranks. Hoffman is slated to face off with Republican Dede Scozzafava and Democrat Bill Owens in a special election in New York’s 23rd congressional district next week.

In a speech at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Legal Reform Summit on Wednesday, former Florida governor Jeb Bush claimed that “President Obama has used the bully pulpit as a way to attack capitalism.” “That’ll make the news,” added Bush after he uttered his criticism of Obama in response to a question from the audience.

Iran told the IAEA yesterday that it will reject a plan to send its stockpile of low enriched uranium to Russia to be processed and then returned for use in a reactor in Tehran. The decision came only “hours after Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, insisted that ‘we are ready to cooperate‘ with the West.”

According to a report that “appears to have been inadvertently placed on a publicly accessible computer network,” House ethics investigators “have been scrutinizing the activities of more than 30 lawmakers and several aides in inquiries about issues including defense lobbying and corporate influence peddling.” Committee chair Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) said “no inference should be made as to any member.”

A report released by the Obama administration today says that “the largest stimulus program in the nation’s history has created or saved at least 650,000 state and local jobs.” The White House says that “the actual number of jobs created so far is likely closer to 1 million, since its report on stimulus job creation only focused on $150 billion of the $339 billion” spent so far.

Approximately 530,000 Americans filed for unemployment insurance last week, reflecting little change from the week before. The Senate is currently considering a bill to extend unemployment benefits by up to 20 weeks, but Republicans have been holding it up.

The Senate unanimously confirmed Dr. Regina Benjamin yesterday to serve as the nation’s surgeon general. For nearly a month, Senate Republicans had delayed a vote on Benjamin as part of the fight over health care reform. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) took the GOP to task yesterday for blocking the vote on Benjamin while concern over H1N1 grows.

After months of negotiations, Honduran and American officials came to an agreement yesterday that would pave the way for the restoration of ousted President Manuel Zelaya. “We are satisfied,” Zelaya told Reuters. “We are optimistic that my reinstatement is imminent.

And finally: “These sweet potatoes are huge! They’re huge,” Michelle Obama told a group of elementary school kids yesterday, as they harvested vegetables from the White House garden. At one point, the First Lady held up one of the larger orange-colored spuds and said: “This can feed an army.” Obama was also photographed eying an earth worm. The Fall Harvest yesterday collected 223 pounds of huge sweet potatoes, carrots, fennel, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, turnips, eggplant, peppers, tomatillos and greens.

Well, jeepers, JEB, why don’t you just say that the President is a n******? That’ll “make the news”, you infantile twat.

  2. EnnuiDivine says:

It’s no surprise that the man who said the GOP needs to follow the path of the Taliban would back a clueless extremist like Hoffman. I think the bigger question would be: would Scozzafava be welcomed into the GOP ranks if, by some miracle, she won? With reactionaries, bigots, and the downright idiotic (i.e., Pete Sessions) leading the House GOP…I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Jeb Bush uses the bully pulpit to maliciously attack President Obama. Hooray for Hypocrisy! There’s no doubt he’ll at least form an exploratory committee for 2012, though even the most ardent Republicans won’t go near the Bush name.

Ahmadinejad and Khameni back out of an internationally negotiated settlement. What a shock. If they’re so intent on cooperation, what is their plan? The one they just rejected allows them to keep their nuclear program and drastically reduce their dependence on domestic oil supplies…and they still reject it. Sadly, this regime isn’t going anywhere for awhile.

Finally. An ethics investigation on the Hill. Democrat. Republican. Doesn’t matter. If you’re abusing taxpayer money for personal expense or accepting massive gifts from lobbyists in exchange for favourable legislation, you deserve the full wrath of…a Congressional ethics investigation.

Even in spite of the report that the gov’t overstated the amount of jobs saved or created by the stimulus (by thousands), it CLEARLY is working. Unemployment rates will drop soon enough.

At last: a surgeon general. The obstructionists in the GOP finally realized they can only play politics with the nation’s health for so long. I mean, really…they criticize the administration for inaction on the flu, while simultaneously blocking a government post directly responsible for the handling of a flu outbreak. Wankers. All of them.

    Mmm, presidential sweet potatoes…

    Jeb, Jeb, Jeb,

We were told that you were the smart one.

Capitalism is fine, as long as it strictly regulated so criminals don’t make off with all of our 401k money.

Or are you for that kind of capitalism Jeb?

    _____________________________________________________________

The Republicans don’t seem to understand that unemployed people don’t just go away when you don’t pay them. They also don’t just magically get jobs when you don’t pay them.

I guess they LIKE the idea of homeless people begging in the street. I guess they WANT more foreclosures in their neighborhoods. I guess they think more uninsured people in our emergency rooms driving up premiums for the rest of us is a GOOD thing. And I guess they’re WILD about what empty homes and homeless people do to their property values.

We know Republicans aren’t compassionate people, and won’t help people because it’s morally right. But you’d think they’d lift a finger because it’s practical and would help their bottom line.

Like it or not, it comes down to this — when one of our people doesn’t have enough income to live on, we’re going to pay for that, one way or another. At least unemployment benefits are conditional on trying to find employment. And while it doesn’t permit a lavish lifestyle, it allows people to stay in their homes, feed themselves, and meet their basic needs.

Of course. The GOP believes it should be up to business (ahahahaha) and religious organizations to provide “charity” to those who’ve lost their benefits/salary/homes. Funny how the rightists are adamant against the seperation of church and state…unless it’s when the state tells the church it can’t incite hatred of gays.

  10. flavorino says:

Jeb Bush claimed that “President Obama has used the bully pulpit as a way to attack capitalism.”

As opposed to the Bush family policy of “attack economics”
where legislation is passed and regulations not enforced which enables the wealthy to suck every available dollar out of the economy and from the middle class and working stiffs.

  11. flavorino says:

Jeb Bush claimed that “President Obama has used the bully pulpit as a way to attack capitalism.”

As opposed to his defective brother’s stellar Presidency in which New York City and Washington D.C. we’re attacked, along with the American middle class and the American Constitution.

    Never forget.

  12. P.D. says:

The GOP is insane. Do they honestly believe by purging their Party of Moderates is going to be beneficial? By supporting people like Hoffman, they are closing their tent to women, gays and minorities. If they keep doing this, They will be finished in a couple of decades, if not sooner.

    12. P.D.

The troubling thing about a Hoffman victory is that it COULD spark a larger trend of far-right politicians with little experience and fewer wits winning elections due to their connections with very well-funded out of state types. All the more reason for stricter campaign finance laws.

If, hypothetically, a Hoffman win kills the GOP, we’d be left with a national Conservative party, which would still garner at least 45% of the vote in every major election to act as a foil to the Dems. As long as the Dems keep botching legislation and caving to corporate interests, there will be some kind of heinously conservative opposition to them.

What we need to to scrap our current legislative branch. Create multi-party democracy based on proportional representation (sort of like a nation-wide version of what Nebraska does for the electoral college). Screw first-past-the-post; truly representative democracy would have the Democratic Party, the GOP, the conservatives, the Greens and whoever else actually getting some form of representation and you would’ve have the inane shit the attention whore office seekers backing Hoffman are doing right now

Has it occured to people that inflation is driving prices up? How are home prices going up when there are foreclosures out the yingyangy.

The Shell oil is saying their profits are down 60%+ [IIRC]

Really? They were artificially inflated and are going down to where they should have been. They are not losing money they are just not making as much. Supply and demand are out the broken window and some yayhoo will clamor “Our profits are down, we must raise fuel prices!” even though demand is down. Supply and demand the right side of my left testicle.

Not this year but last year my wife and I got dressed up and went to a house party for the first time in 15 years. I was a mad scientist and my wife was a witch. We only knew the hosts and don’t go out to parties much so it was very much out of our comfort zone. We were the oldest party goers by a good margin. Had a very good time, lots of halloween jello shooters and far too many funny cigarettes. Took 3 days to recover. LOL

  37. Mr.Peepers says:

  39. Xisithrus says:

Why would Iran nuke Israel? It would be suicidal and they would be utterly destroyed although I am thinking that some of our more fervent religious folks would see that goshawful disaster as the coming of the return of Yeschu.

Nukes are more of a weapon of deterrent from attack, I think, than anything else.

  43. Levi the Oracle says:

Is your Halloween candy prayed over by WITCHES???

To the Wicca, All Hallows Eve is a religious holiday, similar to Christmas, except it celebrates it during the autumnal festival instead of the solstice.

Most Wicca really don’t pray over things, like candy, unless you include casting spells upon that candy. The Wicca believe that their power is vested in them by Nature itself. One does not pray to Nature, at least not in the Christian sense, because Nature has no human characteristics.

One might pray to God that one’s wife not die. Christians believe that there is something personified that might intervene on your behalf if you pray (and believe). Wiccans don’t really believe that Nature is some kind of “super person” that reasons or thinks. Nature simply is, and they attempt to bend its power to their will.

Unless of course, I have no idea what I am talking about.

  51. Mr.Peepers says:

dbadass asked a question as to why Israel has these weapons….answer, deterrent.

Xisthrus…the logic was that just as the Jews were persecuted by Germany, they are persecuted and attacked on a regular basis by their Islamic neighbors thus the need for a deterrent.

  52. Levi the Oracle says:

I find it perplexing that Wiccans (and Druids) do not believe in Christian mythology, but they are accused of being followers of Satan. Satan is part of the Christian mythos, yet those that do not follow Christianity are lumped into the category of followers of the Christian’s evil deity. How can one be a follower of Satan if one doesn’t believe that Satan even exists?

Christianity frightens me simply because they worship the graven image of a man being tortured to death, even though their book says not to worship graven images. More evil has been done in the name of the Christian God, than all the rest of the Gods throughout history, combined.

  54. dbadass says:

And why does the US have these weapons? Are the neighbors of the US always trying to nuke the US? So if you like the nation they are a deterrent and if you don’t they are not a deterrent. Is this how this works?

About witch’s and all living things….There are as many different fractions in the wiccan ideas as there are different relegions all over the world…Let me just add quickly, ” no war has ever been started by witch’s”….Wiccans as a rule are not like the one’s portrayed by Hollywood and the movies, nor like the satan worshipers…There is no hell in my opinion and this witch works for Peace, Mother Earth and all living things…Most I have met are like me, they work to dispell evil and create harmony…No I do not mix up eye of newt and feed it to the unwary, I would be more likely to bake a pie or cake and give it away with my Blessings….Sending out healing wish’s and good thought’s for a friend are my speed….I also send out healing thoughts for evil doer’s hard heart’s, to change their war like way’s to Peace….I would never take another persons life except in self defence..

All of our Sabbots were taken by the christian’s hundreds of years ago to convince new converts to their church way’s…All over the world witch’s were killed for having a birth mark, cat, broom or what ever the papal judges made up for the day…Samhain/Halloween is the fall harvest time and a time when the veil between the living and dead is suposto be the thinnest…Many believe it is a time to honor the dead and speak to them…I think much like native american clans and believe I can do this festival any time I choose and often…Celebrate and be grateful for what I have.

How do’s a witch handle evil doer’s…By exposing them for what they are and shining light on all their evil for the world to see…Sorry for the length…Time to go hug some trees and walk to Bear….Blessings

  64. dbadass says:

I am not making either argument. I am simply pointing out the holes in the logic that has been offered. Are you suggesting that the nation of Iran is uncivilized?

And who do you believe runs the Iranian government?

  70. dbadass says:

dbadass says, There is strategic benefit however to an Iranian deterrent and negotiating chip.

I don’t think that sounds like deterrent

    —-
Why not? Incidently would you have argued that the US was run by a madman under Bush? Afterall he did start a war in Iraq under odd pretenses and claimed all that Magog weird shit? Madness indeed!

  71. dbadass says:

It seems pretty simple, I agree with most of the rest of the civilized world that Iran doesn’t need nukes.

    — But you believe the US, Israel, the UK, India, China, Pakistan, and all do? What about Canada do you think they should? What about Costa Rica? Iceland? How do you decide?

  72. dbadass says:

I am a little confused by this civilized deal. Can I get a list of the place you deem civilized and those you do not. Is torture civilized?

  73. Mr.Peepers says:

    dbad says:

But you believe the US, Israel, the UK, India, China, Pakistan, and all do? What about Canada do you think they should? What about Costa Rica? Iceland? How do you decide?

As I pointed out earlier, I get that you are making an all or none nuclear argument, and I understand that.

In 71, you took the argument out of context….I quoted Ahmadinijead, and said that he did not have “deterrent” in mind for his nuclear weapons program according to his words.

Yes, I do understand he answers to the clerics/ mullahs, but he is the mouthpiece for the country.

Are you really defending Iran and Ahmadinijead’s proliferation of nuclear weapons?

    @73 Don’t be patronizing

  74. Mr.Peepers says:

Also, @71 I would answer your question with a question for you to get a baseline on you before I answer….Was Kennedy a mad man for going into Vietnam, or Truman for going into Korea, or Bush 1 for Perian Gulf War?

  75. dbadass says:

One would have to ask the reasons those presidents did so and if they actually thought fantasy biblical characters had something to do with their reasoning.

  76. Mr.Peepers says:

    76. It is disingenuous to think that he REALLY went into Iraq for fantasy bibilical reasons. Oil, settle a score for Daddy, CIA misinformation….check, check, and check.

  77. Mr.Duke says:

A report released by the Obama administration today says that “the largest stimulus program in the nation’s history has created or saved at least 650,000 state and local jobs.” The White House says that “the actual number of jobs created so far is likely closer to 1 million, since its report on stimulus job creation only focused on $150 billion of the $339 billion” spent so far.

Did you really think they would say anything different? They have been pulling numbers out of their arse for 10 months now. This stimulus nonsense is a con that Bernie Madoff would be proud of.

  78. Mr.Duke says:

In a speech at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Legal Reform Summit on Wednesday, former Florida governor Jeb Bush claimed that “President Obama has used the bully pulpit as a way to attack capitalism.” “That’ll make the news,” added Bush after he uttered his criticism of Obama in response to a question from the audience.

Michael Moore, Sean Penn, Harry Belfonte, Danny Glover and Oliver Stone all approve.

  79. Crazy Cat Lady says:

My man and I are going to our first H party together – as Hugh Hefner and his Bunny. I can’t wait! Usually we just take his kids around the neighborhood. This year he told them “get invited overnight to a friend’s house, or it’s Granny Chris’s!!” We are staying overnight ourselves, as much booze and funny cigs will be there.

    Have a great one everybody!

  80. jwmuiyaai says:

    Mr.Peepers says:
    dbadass,

Is your argument an everybody has them or nobody has them argument? If so, you think that nations and leaders that have proven to be homicidal maniacs and committed atrocities against their own people should have nuclear weapons just like more developed and civilized society’s?

    October 30th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
That homicidal maniac we just got rid of means we shouldn’t have nukes either, then.

  81. Mr.Duke says:

More economic madness from the White House.

In a report for home buyer tax credit wrangling, it seems GMAC is looking to the Treasury for yet another handout:
    GMAC Asks for Fresh Lifeline
Lender in Advanced Talks for Third Slug of Taxpayer Cash — at Least $2.8 Billion More
When you are in for over 15 Billion already, what’s another 3 Billion right?

I am unclear as to if the handout of about 3 Billion is in addition to a TLGP issue just made by GMAC, or if this was the deal they wanted:
Cash Sink Hole GMAC Catches Last TLGP Train Out Of The Station With $2.9 Billion Free Issue
Anybody know? Does it matter? Can anything be done to stop the government from doing these things non stop?

  82. Mr.Duke says:

More economic madness from the White House.

Bear in mind it is impossible to prove how many jobs were created and it is beyond preposterous to think one can estimate the number of jobs saved.

However, let’s take the administration’s estimates at face value.

Obama creates 640,329 jobs at a cost of $323,739.83 per job
