Bachmann Calls For Health Care Protest Rally In DC Next Week: ‘We’re Going To Have A Big Party’

In an interview with the Washington News Observer, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) revealed that, next week in Washington, D.C., the right wing is trying to galvanize yet another mass protest rally against health reform.

Following in the spirit of the “tea party” protests in April and the Glenn Beck-inspired 9/12 rally, Bachmann announced, “We’re going to have a ‘house call’ and a big party out on the National Mall [next week], and we’re going to tell Congress what they can do with their health care bill.”

Fashioning herself as the leader of this mass protest, Bachmann exhorted everyone to “get off the couch, get in your car, get a van together, get a bus together, but get here! We’re going to have a ‘house call’ next week, and we need every American to be here.” She then issued this dire warning (infused with pop culture references):

The American people realize this is it. Just like that brand new Michael Jackson movie came out, ‘This Is It.’ This is it for freedom. If you believe in liberty, and if you’re rejecting tyranny, this is it. Dr. Mark Levin wrote a seminal book that really swept this country called Liberty and Tyranny. And that’s what this debate is about next week. Liberty and tyranny.

Watch it:

Update Bachmann's "house call" is scheduled to take place this Thursday at noon, and it is being organized by the corporate front group Americans for Prosperity.

What does she mean by “next week”? I’m going to be right by the Mall around the 12th and 13th and I would hate to miss such a golden opportunity. If I need to watch the video to find out, I’ll never know.

    Mr.Duke says:

For profit health care is what spurs innovation in the medical field. No profit motive. No motivation to develop medical innovation. Pretty simple concept. Do you work for free? To do give your service or product for free?

Funny that it doesn’t work like that in real life.

We can find no convincing evidence to support the view that the lower prices in affluent countries outside the United States do not pay for research and development costs. The latest report from the UK Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme documents that drug companies in the United Kingdom invest proportionately more of their revenues from domestic sales in research and development than do companies in the US. Prices in the UK are much lower than those in the US yet profits remain robust.9,10

Companies in other countries also fully recover their research and development costs, maintain high profits, and sell drugs at substantially lower prices than in the US. For example, in Canada the 35 companies that are members of the brand name industry association report that income from domestic sales is, on average, about 10 times greater than research and development costs.11 They have profits higher than makers of computer equipment and telecommunications carriers12 despite prices being about 40% lower than in the US.11

  30. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Mr Duke says:

For profit health care is what spurs innovation in the medical field. No profit motive. No motivation to develop medical innovation. Pretty simple concept.

With all due respect, I would say that’s a “pretty simple-minded view”. You have clearly proven yourself to be someone who feels that if you can’t make a profit off it, it isn’t worth doing. Are profits the only thing that you believe capable of motivating innovation?

What about necessity? If astronomers discover that an asteroid capable of wipiong out life on Earth were headed our weay, and an expensive but vitally necessary solution was possible, would you say that it was only worth doing of someone could make a profit off it? Wouldn’t saving the planet be motivation enough?

What about altruism? What about a humane concern for those less fortunate than ourselves? Are you one of those “compassionate conservatives” (a term which refers to someone who is normally neither “compassionate” nor “conservative”)? Do you believe those less fortunate than you deserve to be that way?

I think that’s one of the differences between you and me, Mr. Duke. To be driven solely by profits is selfish and greedy. I believe that there are people out there who are driven by altruism, by their concern for the benefit of their fellow human beings, by their belief that we are all in this together, and that there can be enough, even more than enough in some cases, for everyone if we did away with encouraging greed and selfishness.

And if either of us ever need help from the either, I don’t get the idea that I could count on your willingness to help me, let alone your actual help. But do understand that if I was ever in a situation where sacrificing my life could save yours, I would. Because that’s just the kind of person I am.

  31. pwayne says:

Most of the medical research in this country is done by not-for-profit universities, actually. The big drug companies favor creating drugs you don’t really need, for conditions and diseases that haven’t been invented yet, because for profit businesses must forever be growing or they are dying. In other words, logically speaking, for profit healthcare relies upon the deteriorating health of Americans for a healthy bottom line.

Asking “Do you work for free?” is beyond disingenuous. People who work for non-profits do not work for free. People who work in socialized medicine in other countries do not work for free. The real question is why can so many of us not see the inhumanity of profiting from the suffering of others?

  32. Shayne says:

In addition nobody is saying medical companies shouldn’t make profits. That’s just more right wing nonsense.

My feeling is, if you can’t take it, don’t dish it out. It’s a two way street. But the discussion here is about healthcare. That comment wasn’t.

  38. Wayne A. Schneider says:

What about all those government grants that publically fund research, which is then used by the pharmaceutical companies to develop products for which they can get patents? Without the publically-funded research, many of the new drugs would never be invented.

For example, publically-funded research might discover that certain types of plants help with certain medical conditions. Pharmaceutical companies would then build on that research to develop new drugs. They wouldn’t have spent the money that discovered this trait of certain plants on their own in the first place, because the results were too uncertain to risk the R&D money. So they wait to find out what publically-funded research learns and narrows their research accordingly.

At least, that’s how I understand it to usually work. Phamraceuticals rarely do all the research from beginning to end. They relie heavily on publicly-funded science to narrow their own R&D focus. And they reap all the financial benefits.

  43. Shayne says:

Yeah, they’re in it for the money:
    Bureau of Labor Statistic

Median annual earnings of wage and salary medical scientists, except epidemiologists, were $61,680 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent of these workers earned between $44,830 and $88,130. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,490, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $117,520. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of medical scientists were:

    Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing $82,640
Research and development in the physical, engineering, and life sciences 71,490
    Offices of physicians 70,000
General medical and surgical hospitals 64,700
Colleges, universities, and professional schools 44,600

Median annual earnings of wage and salary epidemiologists were $56,670 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $45,220 and $71,0

  44. progress thought says:

Its all about making money off of the suckers.

  45. Shayne says:

    Oh I forgot this:

Most medical scientists need a Ph.D. in a biological science; some hold a medical degree.
    # Epidemiologists typically need a master’s degree in public health or, in some cases, a Ph.D. or medical degree.
    # Competition is expected for most positions; however, those with both a Ph.D. and M.D. are likely to have very good opportunities

One rationalization of the anti-public option folks, is to say :We have the best medical system in the world (without offering any supporting evidence) BECAUSE it is so expensive.”

In their philosophy anything expensive = high quality.

The second part of their thesis is: “If our medical system is made available to everyone, it will no longer be “the best”.”

To them a pubic health system would be the equivalent of rip-off or bootleg designer fashion items. If I carry a ‘fake’ Coach handbag bought at a flea mart, I devalue the rich person’s $400.00 Coach handbag. And they don’t want that! They highly value their access to our Wonderful Best Healthcare In The World; it is a status symbol. Sharing it would make it ordinary. They would have to think up (or have invented for them) a NEW exclusionary Status Symbol.

Remember, this is the same woman who claims she’s heard “nothing but support” for her batscat agenda. I think that’s because she’s so far around the bend that communications from the world of cause and effect don’t even reach her. She’s utterly oblivious to the reality we sane people share.

So that is why they advertise all their wonder drugs that have side effects like killing your liver to cure skin rashes? I only saw one tourbus out that day, but that’s not unusual (we get a lot of school groups or whatever almost all the time and they always have to stay here in Fairfax, since it’s cheaper for them to stay here than it is for them to stay in DC).
The Inaguration, ontoh, created massive chaos and confusion every where, especially on the roads and highways leading to the ceremony, so I could easily see it reaching over 1 million people…

And even if we were debating government health care, like the military uses, which does train medical professionals who enter the private medical field, do get actual paychecks just like the enlisted.

Unfortunately illness and injury spurs innovation and without that there would be no need for health care or any of the products, equipment and supplies that businesses do create and profit from. Again this issue is about lowering health insurance and thereby health care costs. No one is denying the medical field should profit from health care to pay salaries and expand the medical field the peoples needs

  149. Death Counselor says:

And most “medical advances” that an industray can use is made with PUBLIC money THROUGH Government consortiums and/or Unviersities. Corporate “Inventions or findings” remain just that…private property. The patnet laws should be changed such that any patent that is assigned to a corporation, the corporation has X years (maybe 5) to bring the patent to market or it goes public. This would bring invention out of the backrooms and portfolios of these corporate greedy pricks, and advance intellecutal discovery.

KILL THE CORPORATION, ALL OF THEM.

  150. Hoodathunk says:

I have also noticed that big pharma, given we know pretty much what drugs/chemicals do what, will take an old medicine and re-engineer it and create a ‘new’ drug by making some not signifcant molecular change then make TV commercials for it so people will ask their doctors for that medication which the big drug folks have given many samples of to the doctors.

Too big to fail must be protected, including the establishment that grew 35% under George W. Bush.

Well, you do need a big government so more cronies can feed off the public trough. Big government is to big too fail thanks to Dubyah

  193. Xisithrus says:

NY-23 is only the beginning -DB

Silly, the republicans have held that district for decades their is nothing ‘neo-blood’ about a republican in office there.

Obiwan, the delusion is strong in this one.

  195. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

Women have it too good these days and need to be returned to their traditional roles for willing men. That includes looking good for the working man after he comes in after a long day and keeping herself sensual. Young women today are being indoctrinated by liberals that its ok to be extremely choosy when looking for a man, preferring bad boys over well-mannered, humble men. What the liberals do is encourage women to dress provocatively as a way to taunt good men that you can’t touch this. They are wrecking the natural course of humanity.

Hallow PD!. We are waiting for D Bunk to shut down the thread with there clever overly repetitive use of the word shit.

    Heh,

  203. Levi the Oracle says:

    dr debunk said (emphasis mine),

Only then will new blood emerge.
It shouldn’t be long before new blood takes root.

New blood is so important to this troll. I guess subconscious bloodlust rises to the surface on Halloween. You might call it a Freudian slip of a desire for blood.

  204. Hoodathunk says:

It shouldn’t be long before new blood takes root.

So now plants are smarter than trolls?

  205. Fred says:

speaking of that, maybe you could list some of the major successful programs that the gop can lay claim to. Better just shoot for one and “freedom” don’t count.

  206. Xisithrus says:

that’s the problem when everybody engages in one big circle jerk.

  207. sscncturn64 says:

Hey bunk, you spent the day on firedoglake disrupting the threads and now your here to try and do the same thing.
Thats the problem with repugs and wingnuts like you.
You have no ideas on how to better our country, and you dont give a rats ass about helping out your fellow Americans.
You clowns just disrupt everything that Obama is trying to do.
The fcked up thing about it is that people like you who are disrupting everything are the ones who will benifit the most by his policies. Support for the repug party is shrinking everyday. Repugs and their leaders(beck, limpo, hannity, orielly, savage) hurt the party everyday with their lies and crap they just make up as they go along.
Its freakin hilarious that they are so stupid that they dont even realize the damage they are causing. Good riddance!

    thanks bunk.

  213. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

Paging dr bunk, paging dr. bunk

Aren’t we the party of local control?

Hoff got most of his money from outside the district, and apparently doesn’t even reside in the district.

Our party just sent a signal that we’ll be purifying the landscape. Because we haven’t tried that in 2006 and 2008, apparently.

Too bad that doesn’t take majorities.

When folks complain that our product is too much, what that means is they can’t get enough.

Would you admit Newt is right on this one, dr? Because if you knew any beter, you’d admit our party is a bunch of whiny baby hypocrits. GOP, the big government party.

  214. Xisithrus says:

Actually you self identified as a troll when you first posted seeing as your intent was to stir the shit as you say. The time? O minutes and O seconds to qualify yourself as a troll.

  227. Fred says:

zooey, how long do you think before he starts whining about how intolerant we are?

I got to tell ya, my little girls were tougher than this whimp when they were 5 years old.

  228. Levi the Oracle says:

I wonder if it has ever occured to our enon-cons that chess is actually represents the old order.

You have the King, the Queen, the Bishop and the Pawns who represent the ignorant who are used to go and die for the pseudo aretes

  231. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

dr. cobb, our party is descending into a dictatorship because they can’t get what they want. We have no business poking our nose like this in a local election if we are to be the party of decentralized control. You’re getting what you didn’t pay for. The folks of NY-23 aren’t getting what they paid for. Doesn’t that make you a teat-sucking freeloader?

Well, we’re pretty good at screwing people out of the healthcare they paid for. What’s an election?

  232. Xisithrus says:

Who wants to be a powerless ignorant pawn in the game of life?

Dr Dbunker: I do I do pick me pick me!!

  233. Hoodathunk says:

It seems debunker didn’t pay close enough attention when he used to watch Dragnet. He thinks Joe Friday said “All brag, ma’am, no facts.”

Now now, its not a cobb when its missing kernels.

  235. P.D. says:

First off Mrs. Bachamann is batsh#t crazy. She has no credibility in the real world.
The majority of Americans want and NEED health care reform. So if MB wants to continue to pander to her ever shrinking base, let her. Hopefully the fool who doesn’t want any of her constituents to fill out the census form…..then maybe her distict will those their “representative.”
What an ignorant fool…..but hey the GNOP keeps throwing her out there because she supposedly is attractive……in a nutty sort of way.
Yes, as you can tell I do NOT like this woman….she in no way helps in a system that depends on deliberation and discussion of important issues…. She is actually anti democracy. What an idiot.

  240. Zooey says:

    Well, that was embarrassing.

  241. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

    did I say dr. cobb?

My apology, you f ucking intelligent liberal.

    I meant dr. bunk.

Pratt Medical is well staffed, I see. If I can choose between cobb and bunk, it means competition is alive tand our health care woes are a false alarm.

  242. Levi the Oracle says:

  244. sscncturn64 says:

Bunk, Its quite obvious to everyone here that you are a troll.

  245. Fred says:

    dr dbunk says:
It is giving and not taking.

It is not allowing re probates who have lived their lives irresponsibly to take my last apple so that they may not go hungry.

Obviously nothing but platitudes. Your actions and your words belie your pretense at civility.

This is why you fail, every time. You don’t learn from your mistakes.

  246. Zooey says:

    dr dbunk says:

Conservatism, to me is living within your means. Check!

It is not passing checks our grandchildren will have to pay. Well, you’ll have to dig up Ronnie Raygun to discuss that, but you might get somewhere with W. Maybe.

It is not coddling our enemies and making enemies out of our allies. Again, talk to the W.

It is giving and not taking. Check!

It is being responsible for yourself and yours. Check!

It is not allowing re probates (sic) who have lived their lives irresponsibly to take my last apple so that they may not go hungry. Who are these people?

It is not making everyone else pay for my indifference in taking responsibility for myself. We pay already.

    Well, that WAS refreshing.

  247. Xisithrus says:

Good one X, enon conservative. Now that’s clever!

Conservatism, to me is living within your means.

Then you should use the word frugal. As for the rest of your finger pointing and demonization of others, which isnt a definition but blame game, isnt what I asked you. Thats what is hurting the conservative brand. GWB grew government, increased debt by trillions. Yet I cant find any ‘conservative’ [your definition of it] that takes any responsibility for voting GWB into office.

  248. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

conservatism is anything we want it to be. But when it comes time to put the principles in play, we’ll leave that to democrats while we bang our assistants and start four more wars.

I’ll ask again, why did you guys interfere in a local election? Every repub seems to be avoiding that one with hubris.

  257. Xisithrus says:

Not one of you “enlightened” libs, with the possible exception of X, has given me any reason to believe I was wrong in my original asessment of this cesspool.

If you would stop projecting pre-concieved notions you would likely find that you have alot in common with people here. The main difference being that instead of supporting a band of corrupt politicians who have sold their office to the highest bidder and creating legislation to protect greed we would rather see those funds spent on things our people instead of imperialist adventures rationalized thru exceptionalism

  258. Fred says:

hey bunk, maybe you can tell us why the American people elected a black man with a Muslim name over any republican.

  260. Fred says:

I dont self identify as a liberal Dr Dbunker but as a moderate and the reason I lean left [whatever that socio-political compass is] is because these people here care more about other people than many of the right leaning sites I have read. I am not for communism, I find it, historically, to be another false aristocratic fib and Marx, I think, was a scholarly fraud who meant to decieve the people. Just look at North Korea. The has made himself a King. A bad king. You wont see ‘liberals’ roaming the street there its a rather dismal and poor society of brainwashed pepole.

  265. Fred says:

  270. Fred says:

I don’t know about you guys but I’m always awed by the intelligence of someone who uses the word splooge…

  271. sscncturn64 says:

Bunk, I need to know. How can anyone who is at least capable of reading and writing defend bush/cheney?
Bush was warned that OBL was determind to strike on American soil. Bush/cheney ignored those warnings from the clinton administration. So 8 months into bushes presidency he is responsible for over 3 thousand Americans being murdered. Then the idiot doesnt stay the course(sound familiar) and finish the job in afghanistan. Nope, bushy wants to invade a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Where tens of thousands of innocents have been killed. Bush/cheney are war criminals who should be treated as such. That means a fair trial. Unlike the people who have been locked up in prisons by bush without access to the courts.

  272. Larry Craig says:

Hon, are you coming back again or are you really gone this time? Are you going over to Firedog Lake to be “bored”?

    ???

    20% and falling Dr. Bunk.

Keep pretending.. keep lying.. keep spinning.. you’ll never gain any ‘recruits’ when you operate from a platform based on nothing but lies, but the last thing I want you to do is change. I encourage your party to do more of the same.. for the world’s sake.

If the principles you have listed are your principles, you are among many friends. What ever you want to call them, no Party owns them. For the sake of argument, explain to me the attributes of the Cheney/Bush years that demonstrates these principles. Second, what actions of the Republican Party during the last 8 years demonstrate these core principles?

Actions speak louder than words. Knowing these principles is one thing; living by them is something else.

Demonstrate your core value of honesty and give me some examples!

and as far as Bush/Cheney and 9/11… at the very least they had foreknowledge.. but allowed it to happen.

Although I’m one of those who thinks it was far worse than that.. I believe they orchestrated it – and there’s strong precedent for such an action. Look up Operation North Woods – they proposed shooting down a plain full of American students to support their political agenda.

Look up the details leading up to Vietnam.. or look up the facts of Pearl Harbor. The Kennedy Assassination. Look up Prescott Bush.
Project for a New American Century and ‘a new pearl harbor’.

At the least they thought about causing something like 9/11 and conveniently were granted it.. at worst – they were responsible. Either one is not a revelation.. no surprise.
Cheney and crew are war criminals.. there’s no debate.

I dont think so. The guy has intentionally cherry picked intelligence [Feiths alternative intelligence] and as a Straussian has engaged in many a noble lie because they thik themselves elites whose job it is to mislead the ignorant masses while profiteering mightily from his actions.

His goals, whatever they are, remain shrouded in deception and that I cannot abide by.

Or Hell, I’ll just give myself an injection of the wonderful heart medicine Private Enterprise invented, even tho it costs @20,000. I can afford it because I don ‘t pay taxes, ha ha. (even tho my taxes would be less than $20K)

Conservatism is not helping your neighbor because what the hell did he ever do for you? Conservatism is getting your neighbor’s help in an emergency and flipping him the bird, laughing loudly. SUCKER!

  306. Xisithrus says:

Cheney, if he has been misportrayed, is because of his inability to speak truthfully and engaging in underhanded manuevers to center more and more power in the exectuive office which abrogates the balance of powers. While we can argue infinitely about what we disagree on lets start first with what we do agree on Dr D.

We agree that people should live within their means. Great.

However the capitalist system, which has also become difficult to define because of the abuse of language, is problematic to frugality as capitalism is, when reduced to its simplest form, the replacement of currency with credit and debt. Its a major cause of the recent financial Chernobyl.

And not just because people are living beyond their means but because of overleveraging and outright fraud motivated by greed.

I expect its the “hipocrazy” to quote our newest troll-toy. And forced abstinence’ too, considering the sex habits of your average Repug male, sans Viagra that is. And even with Viagra…

I would like to be a reporter at Bichmanns protest of Government sponsored health care which NO ONE has to buy in to, or pay for if they DON’T WANT TO.

I would ask the “crowd” which of them had insurance and which did not, then divide the ‘haves’ into the ’secure health insurance’ and the ‘might loose it any days’

I would ask M if she refused to accept HER Government insurance, since it is so bad and a bureaucrat death panel is probably discussing her “case” right now.

For profit health care is what spurs innovation

Until the 1940s, health care was considered a national social obligation, not something that generated profits for the private sector.

“For profit” health insurance didn’t become widespread in this country until the late 70’s to early 1980’s … we were pretty innovative in medicine way before then…

I personally remember when you went to the doctor then insurance paid the bill and that was it…and there weren’t all these stupid bills that come in the mail now telling you how much the “patient portion” of the bill is. Pre-existing conditions didn’t exist. And you couldn’t be refused insurance for your health.

What changed? Corporations were allowed to get greedy and regulations were relaxed allowing corporations to make money off of the illness of others…

  361. lux says:

Dr Bunk says in his high school dissertation on conservatism:

It is not passing checks our grandchildren will have to pay.

Dr Bunk fails to understand that an economy based entirely on capitalism lends itself to an ever widening gap between the classes.. eventually leading to complete disfunction. Soon the rich have no base to suck money from.. and without some government means to compensate for this failure in the capitalistic model, huge inefficiencies and eventual collapse of the system ensues. Dr Bunk also fails to understand that though he touts some regard for conservatism as being a responsible view and not one that leads to overspending and debt – all the examples of conservative presidents show the exact opposite as far as their policies. They spend and create deficits more than any liberal – and then the Democrats are left to fix the mess.. and often the only way is by further spending. In your own life you have been in these situations.. if you have no money, then you often have to take out a loan, buy new clothes – maybe a new car, to find some means to increase your income. Simply halting all spending is not a logical fix.

Conservatism is not coddling our enemies and making enemies out of our allies.

Coddling your enemies is not the same as SPEAKING to them. Conservatives view any diplomacy at all as ‘coddling’ or approving of the enemies behavior.. but this is pure bull. Our recent approach to diplomacy is a radical departure to George W’s version.. which was NO diplomacy. Our new path to foreign policy has made us respected the world over and is helping us achieve all our diplomatic goals.

Conservatism is not allowing re probates who have lived their lives irresponsibly to take my last apple so that they may not go hungry.

No one’s taking your last apple.. asshat, we are speaking more of the richest ones who are sitting on a mountain of apples.. with their arms wrapped tightly around them going ‘MINE. MINE. MINE’ as they pay the tiniest wage possible to illegal immigrants to collect those apples.. yet refuse to even contribute one tiny portion to the masses they’ve robbed. In contrast if Republicans had their way they most surely would take my last penny.. and call it ‘fair’ in a very similar way to Faux news being ‘Fair’.. it seems they have a far different dictionary than the one the rest of us use.

Anyway.. sorry for the length of this – It would be easier I suppose, to just say to you.. Mr. Bunk – you are full of shit.

We need every American to come out and tell the government that 45,000 Americans have the right to die every year because they lack healthcare access. We need to let the government know that 50 million Americans without healthcare coverage is just not enough. Let the government know that For-profit healthcare corporation ceos have the right to bankrupt Americans.

As Obama pointed out, that for-profit health insurance companies have employees with jobs. So do banks that repossess Americans homes. Also those who lost their homes use to have jobs, but the number of employees of the for-profit insurance corporations and investment banks outnumber that one American they just screwed out of their American dream.

Just make sure you consider each case individually so you don’t realize that the number of Americans hurt by these parasites greatly outnumber the jobs they provide.

We need to continue what works. Ridiculous profits work to increase stock prices and thus millionaire dividends.

That is an interesting point Reggie. 406. dbadass says:

Once organized the task of removing K Street will most likely not take long as the denial of the attention they seek is something they can not handle

  407. dbadass says:

  408. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    dbadass,

I understand your point. I agree that voting down just encourages them even more, rather than making them think they’re not welcome here (which was the main point). I will try to help you by not commenting to the trolls directly, just about what they say. (You know, my usual, “People who believe x…”). I will leave engaging them directly to you. Besides, they don’t respond to me anyway, no matter how polite I am to them. And, in support of you, I have not been voting anyone down for the past few days.

Is it okay to copy what they say (without using their names) in order to refute the things they say? Or should I tailor my comments to raise the point I want to raise without directly indicating what was said that inspired it? (I can write them as if I just showed up and commented without reading any of the other comments. ;) )

  409. dbadass says:

    Morning Wayne.
I am not sure as to the copying and pasting of their crap. I think the community as a whole might want to have a discussion of how best to handle that dimension. My feeling is no but I can see why others would not want to let bullshit go unaddressed.

  410. Game of Life says:

dbad, why leave them at zero when I use zero to express my disagreement with a poster? I prefer to vote the dummy down. I don’t want their brand of thought to be seen by my eyes, let alone understood.

  411. brando says:

you know what would be awesome: getting some friends together and going to this protest. Create a bunch of signs that say variations on the theme of “END GOVERNMENT RUN MEDICARE NOW.” The signs are sure to get on the news somewhere, and definitely in blogsphere. Then sit back and watch the undies of the republiscum pundits get into a serious knot. They’ll have to explain why exactly they don’t want to end the popular GOVERNMENT RUN program Medicare? Anybody with me?

  412. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    brando,

I believe that a Republican congressman plans to introduce a bill to privatize Medicare. So they’ll say that they aren’t trying to end it, just turn it over to the private sector “because they can always do things better than the federal government can.” This view is, of course, not simply wrong, it’s delusional.

Capitalists believe that anything that makes a profit is “good” no matter how much bad it creates, while anything that doesn’t make a profit must be “bad” no matter how much good it does. I call this kind of thinking “inhumane”.

  413. ralph the wonder llama says:

I will generally join a “talk about but not to” campaign once a troll has earned it, and I’ll go along with a “Flag n Forget” program when that’s called for, too.

I understand the appeal of keeping a troll at zero, but I don’t think it’s a practical goal. As dbadass notes, it requires universal participation, and we’re never gonna get that here.

As for quoting the troll in a rebuttal post, I often find it a more effective way to deliver a smack down than simply referring to the original post number, or even more obliquely that, by just naming the troll, for instance. I recognize the impulse to feed the troll nothing at all, but sometimes it just doesn’t work for me.

IMO these basic, social elements uniformly benefit from proposed health plans:

    * all businesses will function on a level playing field, and should have more options when at last, businesses ‘morph’ or are sold for other reasons;

    * individuals may rely on a new updated ’safety net’ including such recent health conditions as STD’s, and seasonal flu strains;

    * states can depend on a ‘big stick’ approach to health care, to work against communicable disease, because non-coverage is minimized;

But I have to say from what I’ve witnessed in the last 11 months, Obama, the Democrats and his witless fans have proven themselves devoid of any understanding how the health system works or the economics supporting it. I can say the same of all the posters here who support Public Option but HASN’T read a SINGLE line of the Healthcare Bill and taken the time to understand its economic consequences. Most of you DON’T EVEN KNOW what a Public Option is until Obama made an issue of it.

You talk SANCTIMONIOUSLY about how HMO CEOs make millions in salary in the open market but you have NO QUALMS about the government FORCIBLY APPROPRIATING and WASTING TRILLIONS from middleclass taxpayers. This is the same the bureaucracy who has been unable (or unwilling) to control the existing BILLIONS of medical waste and fraudulent billings that is so RAMPANT in Medicare and Medicaid. Do some of my fellow posters even know what MEDICAID is and how it works?! How can you claim that our government is qualified to adminsiter a Public Option when Medicare and Social Security is already projected by the CBO to go BANKRUPT by 2017 and 2047?!!! How is a PUBLIC OPTION even fiscally possible when the TREASURY IS ALREADY FLAT BROKE and the government is ALREADY $12tRILLIONS in DEBT?!!! Christ! And just because people call out this government’s HYPOCRISY, YOU DENIGRATE them as ‘teabaggers’ or ‘KKKonservanazi’?

And the person who wrote this earlier …

“…We need every American to come out and tell the government that 45,000 Americans have the right to die every year because they lack healthcare access. We need to let the government know that 50 million Americans without healthcare coverage is just not enough. Get your facts straight: We hear constantly about the “47 million uninsured.” These figures include 10 to 25 million illegal immigrants, 14 million people who are already eligible for medical benefits but haven’t availed themselves, and 10 million people earning $75,000 or more who could presumably afford their own insurance if they chose to. Even assuming the lowest estimate for illegal immigrants, the true number of uninsured would be only 13 million. Yet Democrats want to nationalize the entire industry, currently 17 percent of GDP, to provide benefits to 4 percent of the U.S. population. Not gonna’ happen.

HANDS OFF MY HEALTH CARE. I agree with Michele. The health care reform bill is not about lowering premiums or covering the uninsured. It is flat out a government takeover of the health care industry. Apparently government isn’t big enough just controlling the banks and auto industry. Real health care reform would have addressed tort reform, but the lawyers pay for reelection campaigns. Real reform would have included competition between insurance companies by allowing us to purchase insurance across state lines. Common sense tells me that our government cannot run an entire health care program. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are going bankrupt. I don’t trust any more bills after the disastrous stimulus bill. It was rushed through because there was a “crisis” and we had to keep unemployment from going above 8%. There

Wait a sec, where exactly did u read that social security and medicare are flat broke? I know that they are having their problems right now, but it’s not that dire, at least compared to the healthcare crisis right now. BTW, it’s not the government’s fault that these are going bankrupt; people are kiving longer today than they were when these programs were created, and if people are living into their 80’s and beyond, naturally their medical costs will go up and they will draw more from social security than is being put in the system now. Oh and BTW, I personally feel that letting people buy insurance across state lines would be a disaster, because the insurance companies would naturally gravitate toward the state with the least regualtions and we’d have a repeat of what’s happening in Delaware right now with the credit card industry (they had so much of their economy based on credit cards, since they had more relaxed rules about usury than most other states, so when credit card companies started failing, people were laid off like crazy over there and their economy is struggling). Oh yeah, one more thing: I don’t know where exactly you heard that the stimulus was a failure, but I can assure you that it has actually done a lot of good things for the economy, like keeping the unemployment rate stable at 9.5%, when it would have been much higher without the stimulus, and it’s pumping money back into the economy as well as repairing our broken infrastructure.

Actually, my dad’s Jewish ( reform Jew), but he also happens to be a Glenn Beck worshipper. And I shouldn’t have called him an idiot, because he’s actually really smart, especially since he works for Lockheed Martin designing planes and stuff ( mainly works with radar) for the military. He’s been working for a long time, so I’m pretty sure he’s aware that he’s putting money aside in Social Security; I just find it funny when I hear him complain about how evil the “big” governemnt is and how much he is “taxed” one minute as well as the evils of “government-run” healthcare, and then the next minute talking about retiring in a few years, I guess as soon as my younger sister and I graduate from college, and collecting Social Security, and horror of horrors….MEDICARE! (which is, “government run” healthcare)

  433. Crash Delivers says:

I’m curious as to if the vast majority of Americans are as altruistic as claimed here, then why must we go to the government to get this done? Couldn’t there be a charity to help provide those in need of health care financial help? I’m certain there are many out there, why isn’t that working?

Instead we go to the government, and make everyone pay for it. We call anyone who doesn’t want to help pay for things greedy for wanting to keep the money they earn. I think it could be easily argued that anyone who wants money from someone else to pay for their things is greedy as well.

There are plenty of ways to lower health care costs, and with them insurance premium costs without turning over more things to the government.

Allowing people more freedom to choose what specifically they want in their policy is a start. If you’re not an alcoholic or a drug addict, you probably don’t need to being paying for state mandated rehab policies as an example.

I’m not completely convinced that insurance itself doesn’t actually cause more problems than it solves. I don’t know of a single insured person who shops around to get the best service for the lowest price. Why bother? You pay for your insurance, (well part of it, if it’s supplied by employer or government aid) so long as it’s billed to the insurance company who cares what that bill is? At very least insurance companies should be making doctors compete for business.

  434. linzloo08 says:

What are these idiots even protesting about? I haven’t seen anything remotely “socialist” or “marxist” about Obama’s agenda, especially healthcare reform. What’s so eveil about making sure that those of us who aren’t as lucky as the rest of us to have good health insurance get good health insurance?
