Gorbachev: Bush once told me that ‘blockheads and dummies’ were supporting the ‘extreme’ Reagan.

bush-gorbachev-webDuring a recent interview with The Nation editors Katrina vanden Heuvel and her husband Stephan Cohen, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev credited President Reagan for helping end the Cold War, but he argued that instituting democratic reforms in his country was the true catalyst. “Without perestroika, the cold war simply would not have ended,” he said. Gorbachev later described a private conversation he had with then Vice President Bush about Reagan:

By the way, in 1987, after my first visit to the United States, Vice President Bush accompanied me to the airport, and told me: “Reagan is a conservative. An extreme conservative. All the blockheads and dummies are for him, and when he says that something is necessary, they trust him. But if some Democrat had proposed what Reagan did, with you, they might not have trusted him.”

When asked what lessons he learned “that President Obama should heed in making his decisions about Afghanistan,” Gorbachev – who ended the Soviet Union’s 10 year war there in 1989 — replied, “One was that problems there could not be solved with the use of force. Such attempts inside someone else’s country end badly.”

Somebody is screaming out to be acknowledged. What is up with that? Doug don’t you get that it is lame and annoying or is that the goal?

Was he talking about the political blockheads, the religious blockheads, or both?

  9. flight says:

Wow, what a revelation! Who would have thought!
    St. Regan’s secret is out.

The Republicans are disintegrating before our very eyes.
    What a shame!

  10. laur says:

The Bush Crime family never much respected Reagan. I’m not surprised that Gorbachev can make this credible statement. I didn’t vote for Reagan either time (history has proven my judgment correct), but I never liked GWH Bush, either.

Gorbachev is right about not wasting force. Afghanistan is know to be the graveyard of empires.

  11. Briseadh na Faire says:

“Reagan is a conservative. An extreme conservative. All the blockheads and dummies are for him,

Today, Reagan’s policies would be too moderate for what is left of the Republican Party.

“One was that problems there could not be solved with the use of force. Such attempts inside someone else’s country end badly.”

    PRESIDENT OBAMA, ARE YOU LISTENING?

  13. Marie says:

    OT
Republicans play hard ball and they play it dirty, too.
Scozzafava has suspended her campaign in upstate NY and told her supporters to stand behind Hoffman.

  14. Hoodathunk says:

“One was that problems there could not be solved with the use of force. Such attempts inside someone else’s country end badly.”

This assumes the invader is there to ’solve problems’. When the goal is to set up a US friendly puppet regime that the populace doesn’t want, it magnifies the probability of failure on an exponential scale.

But if one is there to make money and lives lost isn’t a factor, it works pretty well.

  15. Marie says:

The blockheads and dummies still adore Ronnie Raygun.

  16. flight says:

Marie, I think the country is in for some dark times.

  18. Marie says:

    flight,
if you are referring to upstate NY, and extrapolating that to 2010 – I agree that the repugs are nasty players in the field, and unfortunately, the good guy only wins in the movies.
This is going to be a very ugly year, and Dems do not have what it takes to fight dirty.

  19. Shayne says:

GHW Bush is more like Dick Cheney than he is like his son. He has been creating chaos for decades and you can bet he is still orchestrating the Fox assault on President Obama through “his man” Ailes.

  20. Marie says:

Afghanistan is not going to end pretty – no matter if we stay or go – it will be bad for the administration – second guessers will opine every hour. The military have put Obama in an even worse spot for declaring their position in public – McChrystal should be fired for insubordination.
If Obama does that, though, he will be pilloried for it.
It seems like so many are determined to see the administration fail that they will stop at nothing to accomplish that.

  21. Shayne says:

The same dim wits who accepted Reagan’s inability to answer a question during Iran contra hearings find Palin’s ignorance a plus. The “elite intellectuals” in this country need to realize that these idiots are particularly dumb sheep that need to be protected from the corporate evil doers that are manipulating them and destroying this country.

  22. Shayne says:

The “great Ronnie Reagan”? These people are just pretending to be stupid.

  23. sscncturn64 says:

Marie @20, Excellent piont, The repugs will stop at nothing just to see Obamas adminstration fail. These same people called us traitors if we spoke out asgainst bush and his cronies.

  24. Marie says:

Referring to Ronald Reagan as “great” tells us more about you than it does about Reagan…and it is not flattering.

  25. angels81 says:

Ah, poor little K Street, were talking about his dead god Ronnie the Raygun. Whats a poor troll to do, he’s so sad.

    Bhahahahahahahahahaha!!!

  26. Tawdry says:

K Street Whore an apt name. It’s the only thing you’ve had right. Excuse me, mean correct. You are a K Street Right Wing Whore. The Right Wing nuts feed it to you and you eat it up. But you know where it usually comes out.

  27. dbadass says:

    Hi K Street Whore.
    Sucks to be you.
Ready to discuss my idea yet?

  28. dbadass says:

    Reagan supported terrorism….

  29. Marie says:

The race in NY will probably go to Hoffman (it’s pretty republican up there, so the Dem is still a long shot) but this foretells that the RNC is going to have to acknowledge that their party has been hijacked by the birthers, tenthers, teabaggers, and other extremists — the moderate repug is further marginalized by the likes of those who worship at the altar of Palin, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, and even Dobbs. The brainwashed and brain-dead are taking over the GOP.
Fox Noise will foment this division and encourage the extremists and the liars, and they have the media outlet to do so.

  30. ForTruth says:

I like learning new things about Reagan. I’m finding more and more that Reagan placed into motion, some of the largest problems we have in America today.

  31. kasinca says:

Raygun was a failure and a fraud.

  33. Virtual Pebble says:

That danged Poppy Shrub. What a kidder. I bet he meant to tell that Mr. Gorbachev Comrade Fella that the supporters of the Sainted Ronnie Ray Gun were “brain-dead zombies”, not blockheads and dummies.

  34. flight says:

    Marie,
The Republicans are expending political capital for Party alone. The returns on this political investment are minimum.
Bush left this party a legacy they have to run from. Senior Republican “bright boys” are trying to steer but are being ignored.
The Democrats on the otherhand are expending political capital on the countries affairs. This is how you achieve a return on capital investment. Obama is running the country and the Party, and he is smart.

The voter will have to decide in the end, the contest hasn’t started yet, and the Republicans are eating their own.

Who do you want running the country? An obvious answer.

  35. NinerFan says:

Hey Doug Hoffman. I would have thought that after you vomited out your opinion that John Lennon had the same name as Vladimir Lenin, you would have slinked away in shame. Evidently morons have no shame.

  36. Marie says:

The election in Afghanistan is up for grabs now – Karzai will surely remain in power, and he does not have a lot of respect and trust in the populace.
We are supposed to support a corrupt and ineffective government with our soldiers?
Obama is looking to find a way to send fewer troops than McChrystal wants – I wish he were looking for a way to start taking them out – but I suppose that cannot be done too abruptly – we still have to get out of Iraq as well.

  37. dbadass says:

Watch this K Street Whore. I am gonna keep you alive a little longer. See I told you I only vote up…

  38. ncbrickhome says:

Even though HW Bush was the BIGGEST TRAITOR of all (Iran/Contra, Orlando Bosch, Saddam, Osama, etc.)

he WAS right about the BLOCKHEADS and DUMMIES.

Which after 30 years, and 13 years of Fox “news”,

    are STUPIDER than ever…

  39. Marie says:

    flight,
I agree with you — I think you have more faith in the people than I do, however.
I know Obama is the best guy to have as president in this very dangerous and perilous era, but too many people who don’t think do vote.
I shudder to think of the complex issues of the day being managed by McCain/Palin and the repugs.
As it is, I trust Obama, I have faith in him, but I see him in some untenable positions with no good solutions.

  40. tom says:

The republican party will never be able to redeem itself until it does two things:

    1. admits that Ronnie RayGun was the genesis of the failed ideology that it still clings to today; and

    2. owns up to and apologizes for GDumbya and Darth Cheney’s total incompetence

Unless and until it does these things, it will be condemned to wander around in the barren desert that is the “minority party of NO”.

  41. NinerFan says:

K Street Heretic: “Wow. A hit piece on the great Ronnie Reagan.”

He promised to limit the size of government and then grew it.
He promised to cut taxes and enacted the largest tax increase in history.
He promised to balance the budget and ran the deficit up to triple what it was when he arrived.
He sent a brigade of Marines to Lebanon as a “show of force,” and when 233 of them were killed, he quickly pulled them out and attacked the Caribbean Island of Granada.
He sent shoulder-mounted missiles to Iran and then used the money to send arms to terrorists in Central America.
He allowed the same government planes used to ship arms to be used by those same terrorists to run cocaine back into the country (ok, maybe he didn’t actually know about that one, but it happened on his watch).
He ignored AIDS until it turned into a full-blown health problem because he didn’t want to think about gays.
He fell asleep in cabinet meetings, lied to the public and then apologized to the public for lying.
He busted the air traffic controllers union and made air travel much less safe in the process.
He began the process of lending money to the wealthy through treasury bonds rather than taxing them and now, we are the largest debtor nation in the world.
He armed the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and even sold them the chemical weapons they used to gas that famous Kurd village.
He armed the Afghan rebels and trained them to become what they are today – al Qaeda.
He presided over the most corrupt administration of the 20th century – 135 members indicted, investigated, prosecuted, etc.

Thanks Reagan. You really screwed things up big time… and conservatives worship your name!

  42. dbadass says:

  44. ncbrickhome says:

    Reagan is DEAD and BURNING.

The TREASONOUS Bushes, Cheneys and their SUPPORTERS will be there SOON.

    For ETERNITY!!!

  45. NinerFan says:

They say Reagan was a visionary.

His first official act upon moving into the White House was to have the solar panels Carter had put on the roof removed.

    Veeeerrrrry visionary!

  46. galmud says:

    K Street Whore says:

Wow. A hit piece on the great Ronnie Reagan. Think Propoganda desperation is front and center. Sad.

You are a dummy and a blockhead

  47. NinerFan says:

It’s ironic that so many seniors seem to love Reagan. Evidently, they’ve absentmindedly forgotten about how he fought against Medicare tooth and nail. He went on country-wide speaking tours trying to garner public opinion against Medicare. He warned that Medicare would be the beginning of a vast government takeover. Sound familiar?

Seniors! If Reagan had had his way, you’d be screwed! Wise up!

  48. Marie says:

Our troll today cannot win the arguments, cannot effectively defend Raygun, so she is having her jollies by voting down our comments.

  49. NinerFan says:

In the last few posts there has been an avalanche of reasons why people should consider Reagan’s presidency a complete disaster.

Surely, one of his stalwart followers like the K Street Heretic could offer of something (other than he was popular and spoke well) of substance on what Reagan did that was good for the country. You’ve always got the fictional novel of how he “Ended the Cold War!” Lots of people still believe that little yarn. There must be something you can post in defense of your demigod.

  50. Marie says:

    Ninerfan,
I think the short memory of seniors has distorted their opinion of Raygun and what he did to start us on the path toward destruction – they can only remember the nice guy who made Bonzo movies.

  51. Hoodathunk says:

There must be something you can post in defense of your demigod.

He was the first bobble head doll elected to the Presidency?

  52. NinerFan says:

Marie: “they can only remember the nice guy who made Bonzo movies.”

Right. That was when he was still a Democrat. Then, Nancy and her ultra-wealthy father got a hold of him and the rest is history. Seniors love their Medicare. Would it be too much to ask them to remember that if Reagan had had his way, they wouldn’t get it?

  53. LiberalVoter says:

    “Tear down that wall!”

    A great moment in history.

Yeah, who was Reagan’s speechwriter? Reagan did not have enough brain power to think this one up, just use his acting skills to read it off the paper in front of him. Great way to take false credit.

  54. Fred says:

    “Tear down that wall!”

    The “great” opportunist at work.

  55. Shayne says:

Actually I watched part of Sicko this morning and it was Nixon who started destroying the health care systm. Reagan just destroyed everything else.

  56. dbadass says:

    K Street Whore:
Ignoring it is not going to make it go away. You might as well just change names now. We all know how this is going to end. Why continue to humiliate yourself?

  57. Bobwurst says:

Since you brought that up dougie, why do you support the only president in our history to have never received an honorable discharge from the military?

  58. Bobwurst says:

Reagan was so out of it he once referred to military uniforms as costumes.

  59. Doug Hoffman says:

Bob, there’s no shame in that. Many men have “discharge” problems. It’s just a matter of shrinking the prostrate. I wear a yellow ribbon to help spread “discharge awareness”.

  60. Doug Hoffman says:

    Bobwurst says:
Reagan was so out of it he once referred to military uniforms as costumes.

    Aren’t they?

  61. NinerFan says:

Classic. The only thing the K Street Heretic can think of is a throw-away line written for him by one of his speechwriters challenging the Soviet reformers to do something they had already decided to do.

Perfect Reagan – all show, no substance. They had already decided to remove the wall and Reagan gets to yell “tear down that wall.” That’s really all you’ve got, conservatives – words and show.

  62. Bobwurst says:

    Doug,
there is shame in deserting during a time of war or in behaving so poorly that he was kicked out the the national guard.

There is shame in him lying about it.

There is shame in him strutting around on that aircraft carrier, delaying the homecoming of real patriots, for political reasons.

There is shame in him attacking a real war hero’s military record when his is so checkered.

And there is shame in lying about this. If Bush was a democrat you would be all over him for this, and you know it.

  63. ncbrickhome says:

    Bobwurst says:

Exactly. Bush WAS an AWOL coward, and IS a TREASONOUS LITTLE PUNK.

Cheney needs his FACE SMASHED IN by his MASTER Satan when he gets to hell.

    TRAITOR Ronnie is ALREADY THERE.

  64. ncbrickhome says:

    Doug Hoffman says:

    Bobwurst says:
Reagan was so out of it he once referred to military uniforms as costumes.

    Aren’t they?

To YOU and AWOL pansies like TRAITOR Bush,

    YES.

    To REAL Americans, NO.

  65. Bobwurst says:

    ncbrickhome,

We don’t know for sure that he is awol. He have been dishonorably discharged. he was certainly capable of behavior unbecoming to an officer. We do know that he had complete access to the the pentagon for 8 looong years and he did nothing to produce his discharge papers, which would have been easy and would have put this issue to rest.

You’d think the patriotic tea-baggers who are so concerned about President Obama’s birth cert would be just as interested in this little bit of paperwork…

  66. Doug Hoffman says:

Bob, as my friend backup would say, you have a point. ncbrickhome I understand your point of view but you’re a little crazy.

I’m giving out candy corn and gummi bears tonight, what about you guys?

  67. ebbAndflow says:

NinerFan you have RR pegged. Hope I’m not being too forward but do you reside in the Golden State? Are you old enough or were you a resident during Regan’s Reign and destruction of CA?

  68. Bobwurst says:

So are you retracting your statement that there is no shame in bush’s behavior?

  69. Bobwurst says:

JImmy Stewart, Clarke Gable, Glenn Ford, Charlatan Hesten, Charles Bronson, Julia Child, are among the Actors and TV personalities who risked their lives durning WWII, Ronnie Reagan, chose to stay in hollywood and make crappy movies.

  70. NinerFan says:

Bobwurst: “We don’t know for sure that he is awol.”

At the time, the military code referred to anyone who had been out of contact from superiors or fellow servicemen for 30 days or longer. There is no record of Bush communicating with anyone for at least a couple months so technically, yes, he was AWOL at the time. Remember, there was a huge problem with that kind of thing at the time because they had been literally pulling kids out of their lives with the draft and forcing them into service, something young people today can’t seem to quite fathom and I understand why.

  71. NinerFan says:

ebbandflow, sure, I was around for Reagan Part I, The Governor! I’m sure you remember one of his better moments:

Governor Reagan: “If you’ve seen one redwood, you’ve seen em all.”

  72. Fred says:

    ronald raygun…..zap

  73. NinerFan says:

I can’t believe that in my long list of Reagan disasters above, I somehow forgot the Savings and Loan Collapse of the late 80’s. In a precursor to what Republican zealots would do in congress in the late 90’s and Bush in the 00′’s, Reagan deregulated the industry, it exploded with fraud and greed and the taxpayers had to bail it out to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.

Legitimate question: where was the “liberal” media to remind the public when this started coming down again in the late 90’s? Had the media also forgotten the results of deregulation in the 80’s?

  74. NinerFan says:

    So, quick review:

    - Sold arms to terrorists/gave arms to terrorists
    - Got 233 Marines killed and then quietly withdrew
    - Broke every single fiscal campaign promise spectacularly (tripled the deficit, tripled the debt, increased the size of government, enacted huge tax increases)
    - Deregulation policies caused Savings and Loan Disaster
    - Most corrupt administration of the 20th century (138 members)
    - Lied to the public about the Contras and then apologized
    - Consistently confused real events with events in movies

And this guy is the one they all exalt as the most successful conservative President ever! That’s the modern conservative movement for you right there.

  75. krazeeinjun says:

Why does it not surprise me to see these four words together in the same sentence?:

Ninerfan & Marie, Not all seniors are either stupid or conservative. Back when Reagan was President I knew and my kids knew that he was a disaster (though I hate to say it, my Mom thought he was wonderful).

Yep, love those welfare/nanny state entitlements. Made to keep losers happy and under government control.

  80. ebbAndflow says:

Reagan’s destructive ways began as Gov. of CA.
De-funding Mental Health causing closures of facilities. Under the guise of ‘compassionate conservatism’ (although that phrase wasn’t used then) – his grand idea: Mental Health patients should be re-introduced to ’society’ – yet he had no plan in place. There were few, if any, clinics for patients to seek help or have needed medications re-filled. Thus leaving them to wander the streets virtually homeless.

In the Spring of ‘69 he let loose the National Guard on the Cal (Berkeley) campus – where they occupied for over two weeks. Tear gas and bayonets to break up a student strike. Yeah, Ronnie’s a real hero. (drolly spoken).

  83. Jackie says:

George H.W. Bush passed on his language to his dummy son George W. Now most of us know Reagan brought back the lack business system done before the Great Depression. He openly gave free dealings to the Bank and Wall Street as they funded his campaigns. Daddy Bush was nothing but a VP who brought Reagan his coffee. The Cold War brought and made billionairs. Obama will have to deal directly with the Taliban just as Govenor Bush did in the late 90’s. As for Al Quada well how long has it been since anyone has actually seen Bin Laden. Yes the Pentagon put out that funny fake video tape of Bin Laden as they used a cheap beard and fake background which the Media/Press passed as true. Osama Bin Laden is dead and has been for a long time but his name was used to continue to put fear in Americans and it worked very well.

  84. NinerFan says:

Mr. Duke: “Obama=LBJ … Vietnam all over again.”

Same old story. If he commits more troops, conservatives will say he’s LBJ. If he draws down the conflict, they’ll say he doesn’t have the stomach to fight a war; that he’s “timid.”

Doesn’t matter. People like you will complain no matter what he does.

  85. NinerFan says:

Mr. Kwsventures, could you be more specific? How exactly are the senior citizens under government control as a function of the fact that they enjoy universal health care?

  86. humbug72 says:

“Yep, love those welfare/nanny state entitlements. Made to keep losers happy and under government control.”
