Conservatives Rally Behind Bachmann’s Call For Anti-Health Care Reform Protest In DC

Michele Bachmann and Steve KingOn Saturday, ThinkProgress reported that Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) was calling on conservatives to take time off from their jobs this week and to gather on the National Mall this Thursday for “a big party” in opposition to health care reform. In an interview with the Washington News Observer, Bachmann said that her protests would be inspired by hate radio host Mark Levin, who recently wrote a book called Liberty and Tyranny.

Now, it turns out that Levin will be at Bachmann’s rally. Promoting the right-wing gathering on WorldNetDaily’s radio show today, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) announced that Levin, along with conservative stars like Jon Voight and Betsy McCaughey, would be speaking at the event:

KING: On that day, we will have with us Jon Voight, the actor is coming in. And he’s more than an actor if you’ve seen him in the media. Mark Levin will also be here, Dr. Betsy McCaughey who has written much about this national health care in the Wall Street Journal. Tony Perkins, there will be others, but those I can announce will be here. Michele Bachmann will be here, I will be here, Tom Price, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee will be here, and we’re calling upon the American people, come defend you’re freedom. Do so politely, within the law, respectfully. But do it as emphatically as you can within those limits. That’s the only thing that is going to turn this thing around.

Listen here:

The conservative infrastructure has been rallying around Bachmann’s idea. Last Friday, Bachmann promoted her rally on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. Glenn Beck hosted her on his radio show today and endorsed her efforts. The offices of both House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) also issued their support.

For those who are unwilling to take time off from work to travel to DC, Bachmann and King are both recommending that they visit the website of the corporate front group Americans for Prosperity to find info on congressional district offices.

Update Bachmann enlisted Rush Limbaugh to promote her rally as well. In her note to Limbaugh, Bachmann said, "We'll have a meet-up at the Capitol steps and then the insurgency begins."

Ironically, roughly the same number as the Gay March. But don’t worry I’m sure Faux will inflate the numbers, yet again.

Why do I have this idea that we’re going to see a lot of teabaggers in the capital (although maybe not as many as in the past — it IS getting colder these days), most of whom will be outraged at the idea that their “freedom” is being taken away from them, but will have absolutely no clue as to which freedom, and exactly how it’s being taken away.

I anticipate we will see a few (but only a few) protesters approached by broadcast reporters on camera and asked about this. And I predict the response will be some mishmash of the words “socialist”, “Marxist”, “government takeover”, etc. that will make no sense whatsoever.

The “sweeping elections” are a result of the Democratic contender being borderline stupid or focusing their campaigns too negatively. The voters aren’t pumped for conservative ideals, they’re just annoyed by the men in particular rather than their ideologies.

20% Republican self-identification is a hard number to combat. Bachmann is representative of why a lot of moderately-minded people are backing away from the party.

“Hyperinflation” is trying to say he wants to murder the President, hates the 9/11 families and thinks the races should never intermarry. He’d also like to add that he’s completely obsessed with a certain MSNBC commentator whose name rhymes with Shmolbermann, but his real love is for Michael Weiner Savage. He knows his heroes are dummies, liars, blowhards and loons, and it makes him very angry so he hopes he can do something to make you angry too. Just don’t laugh at him, okay? Lastly, he’d love to do more than just troll but he’s too cowardly and incompetent to be anything more than be a Cheeto-munching keyboard commando, so what you see is what you get.

  47. YoungSloshee says:

I love statements like “Obama has screwed up this country. The people are fed up.” Who are “the people”? Like the 9/12 protests, conservatives like to think they speak for everyone, then inflate their numbers as a result.

Polling is done for a reason. If the people of NJ and VA and NY’s 23rd were asked specifically if Obama’s policies were influencing their voting decisions compared to the actual candidates, the results would prove the conservatives’ talking points superficial almost instantly.

But, of course, leave it to right-wingnuts to make blanket assumptions that the world is on their side.

    wiley: “Where are the Democrats?”

In congress, working on passing legislation. Where do you want them to be?

  100. wiley says:

Speaking up for the rest of us and pushing back hard against the corporate bullies that are lobbying against real reform.

  101. patmcgrowen says:

I am sick of this psychotic ignorance. I think we (pro-reform) need to have a counter protest. We should match every teabagger and be just as passionate. Let’s all gather in DC this week. We need to go and march. I think it would be very moving to have 44,000 people lying on the mall in reflection of the thousands that die each year because they can’t afford health care in America. This is an important moment in our country’s history and I think that it deserves a high profile demonstration to show the true support. It’s time to fight back.

  102. pete says:

I hadn’t scrolled up to the update. Sheesh! If inviting an “insurgency” into the halls of Congress isn’t worth formal censure? I don’t know what is.

Please good people. Contact your Congresspersons and insist on disciplinary action regarding Crazy Shelly’s constant divisive and damn-near treasonous statements. I’m not above begging the nation to help me shut this b!tch up.

  103. Game of Life says:

These racist rallies would be empty if it weren’t for the first of the month checks.

  104. Game of Life says:

    What are you saying Pete?

We should let the loonies loon.

  106. patmcgrowen says:

I just wonder what old Michelle would do if a bunch of public option loving Americans were roaming the halls with her. Pushing reps to support reform. I think her head might explode. Every American has the right to protest as long as they agree with her. I think seeing an equally emphatic pro reform crowd would push her over the edge. That’s her kryptonite!

  107. pete says:

    I rarely acknowledge a stupid troll by name but conservative4ever, deserves a response. Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers the stupid troll claims we need to study, said;

The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.
“To the Republican Citizens of Washington County, Maryland” (March 31, 1809)

  108. pete says:

Drat! I hit the button too soon!

It seems that President Jefferson would have stood for most measures to protect public health and ease suffering. And I’m damn sure that he would have objected to cancer patients, or other sufferers of chronic disease, being denied treatment because their VISA is maxed out.

On the other hand he, and most of the other Founding Fathers, were pretty unanimous that there was no justification for invading foreign lands. That particular evil came much later.

In fact, they weren’t much for standing armies. That particular expense was left to the states. I think that one could make a case that the Founding Fathers would have disbanded the U.S. armed services and given state guards and “militias” more autonomy.

  109. conservative4ever says:

I rarely acknowledge idiots by name (like you pete), but you don’t ruin an entire healthcare industry, bankrupt the country, destroy personal liberties, expand government, give the government more control of your life, and destroy your children’s futures, to help a relatively small percentage of citizens when there are much better, more economically-sound solutions.

It seems to me there is no hope here, with such brain-washed morons who can’t think for themselves.

  110. e_to_the_p says:

wow you take a lot of words to say nothing true conservative4ever.

    wait, not words, …crying.

  111. patmcgrowen says:

The republican regime doubled the national debt, ran huge deficits, lied to the American people…WMD..mental recession, illegally wiretapped our conversations. Is selective amnesia a pre-existing condition? I’m sure dementia is.

  112. sawyer says:

conservative4ever, I’m with you. This is a bad bill with the purpose of giving more power to the government and less freedom to the people, freedom to control our money and choose our healthcare providers. Maybe the liberals could explain which government run program was ever more efficient and cost effective than private industry. (stand in line at the DMV lately?) The republican regime doubled the national debt, I agree, but Obama doubled it again in 6 months. We are out of money, wake up!

  113. green says:

Wow, and more wow. Typically I don’t respond to the trolls but this conservative4gettingscrewed is beyond the pale. He doesn’t know what our country is and where we came from. He has no information about our founders and their struggles to create a just society.

I have a job and health insurance that goes away when my job goes away. Get it? Freedom? Perhaps I would like to start a business creating jobs for Americans to create things again, I can’t because the health insurance companies would make that impossible. How do you like knowing that everthing crappy piece of shit you buy is made in China? Freedom? Blow me!

  114. pete says:

I’m afraid that I would need links to the sections of the bill that would cause all these calamities the stupid trolls are so afraid of. Though I’ve only skimmed a summary I haven’t seen anything resembling the calamities they claim.

Plus, Medicare, the VA, and some state’s Medicaid programs are all more efficient than private insurers.

BTW, I’m on Medicare and I still pay a premium and co-pays, they are just lower than any of the private insurers who refused to cover me. Medicare literally saved my life, like countless others who suffered with non-insurable conditions without it.

  115. sawyer says:

Question: Which government run program was ever more efficient and cost effective than private industry?

    Liberal response: Blow me!

    Very Intelligent

  116. sawyer says:

Of course medicare is less expensive for you, because it’s subsidized by 3% of every paycheck everyone else earns (1/2 employee, 1/2 employer). Nothing is free.

  117. green says:

Good evening Pete.. I agree. Medicare for all is the way to go. And I would be quite happy to pay more into Medicare knowing that my fellow citizens and myself and my children could be covered….and get the health care we all need. It’s simple.

  118. OutstandingInMyField says:

Why do these pro-insurance lobby folks get trying to scare us with the “government will bankrupt our children” stuff? Do they think that the health insurance folks deserve some sort of monopoly on bankrupting our children?

  119. sawyer says:

By the way, the health care bill cuts medicare.

  120. patmcgrowen says:

The national debt was 5.73 trillion at the beginning of the Republican regime then doubled to 10.7 trillion when the tyranny was lifted. In order for Obama to “double it” then you are saying the national debt is over 20 trillion. Wrong. The current national debt is 11.9 trillion, not double by any kind of standard. It was the disastrous and failed policies of the republican regime that is the heart of all of this madness. It will be future generations paying for the Right’s wrongs. If only instead of republicans sailing down the river of denial in the S.S. Mental Recession, they used their superior brain power to stave off the Great Recession when it started in Dec 2007.

BTW, the health care bills reduce the deficit, but I guess you’re against that too.

Please clarify..are you against Medicare, Medicaid, VA, and every single “government run health care”. Do you believe ALL of these should be abolished?

  121. patmcgrowen says:

    sawyer says:

By the way, the health care bill cuts medicare.

It cuts taxpayer subsidies to expensive Humana plans for seniors. But I guess you prefer taxpayers get gouged by paying 14% more so someone over 65 can have a Humana card in their pocket.

  122. pete says:

I paid my share and now I’m collecting. That’s how it works.

I might also mention an old friend of mine, a Nam vet, who developed a degenerative disorder that his private insurer wouldn’t treat and, because he had always done the “right thing” and carried private insurance, he didn’t go to the VA until he was nearly wheel-chair bound. They arrested it in a couple visits and he’s shown dramatic improvement under their care.

I might add that, as someone who has spent a lot of time in clinics and hospitals, I’ve been impressed with the efficiency of the local VA hospital/clinic. I’ve taken my old friend to many visits and, to mention just one impression, if he arrives early for an appointment he goes in, and finishes, early. The whole place seems to run with military precision.

  123. sawyer says:

Do you honestly believe the health care bill will reduce the deficit? I have some land I would like to sell you. Medicare and Medicaid aren’t going anyhwere until they go bankrupt. I am in favor of helping hose who need it, but not by creating disincentives for people to help themselves. I stand corrected on the deficit. The federal budget deficit for fiscal 2009 tripled to a record $1.4 trillion, according to a Congressional Budget Office.

  124. sawyer says:

Pete, that’s good you have a good health provider. I believe we should keep the freedom to choose the best of them. That’s why I am afraid that a government option would lead to a goverment only plan and to worse overall care (e.g Canada, Great Britain).

  125. flight says:

    conservative4ever @ 112

Your eloquent words were quite moving.
(Every American feels this in their heart, no monopoly for the conservatives.)
    “BUT”
What is your definition of freedom and liberty?

This is where we get to the sticking points.
You have used a broad brush and stated nothing of any relevance to healthcare.

There is a very big probelm with healthcare!
Who’s healthcare system do we have presently?

Typical rhetoric; no action; standard Republican response.

  126. Virtual Pebble says:

I agree heartily with you, conservative4ever. You’ve written a perfect description of the outcome of 8 years of Shrub policies; Shrub and Darth Cheney did all of those things, with the possible exception of ‘ruin an entire healthcare industry’. Healthcare has been headed for the ditch and a rollover since about 1946, when Congress passed the anti-trust exemption for healthcare insurance corporations; that exemption allows that particular set of corporations to engage in collusive and other anti-competitive activities that would put other corporations into a fedreral court. Those insurance corporations are going to wreck our entire economy and society and no one, let alone Shrub and Darth Cheney, has done squat about it since the collapse of the Clinton initiative, until the present administration.

Every other thing you list can be directly attributed to, and shown to be, Bush #43 policy.

  127. humbug72 says:

    pete says:

“I paid my share and now I’m collecting. That’s how it works.”

I agree, Pete. Medicare has been in place for roughly 42 years. I paid into it as a full-time worker for probably 35 of those years. As a part-timer employee since 2004, I’m still paying into it, albeit not a whole lot.

My total contributions and my current monthly premiums may not add up to a great amount, but it isn’t exactly a government hand-out, either.
