Few Republican congressional members have served as a greater fount for hyperbolic and uninformed ranting about health care reform as has Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC). As ThinkProgress previously documented, Foxx has claimed Democratic reforms would mean seniors are “put to death by their government,” that health reform is a “distraction,” and that “there are no Americans who don’t have health care.” She was at it again today on the House floor, arguing that health reform is a greater threat to our country than “any terrorist right now in any country”:
Everywhere I go in my district, people tell me they are frightened. … I share that fear, and I believe they should be fearful. And I believe the greatest fear that we all should have to our freedom comes from this room — this very room — and what may happen later this week in terms of a tax increase bill masquerading as a health care bill. I believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.
Watch it:
What is it with politicians from the Carolinas? Perhaps if they and the good folks from Oklahoma would hook up and relocate to Alaska we could get something accomplished here in the lower 48…
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:51 pmI believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.
In a way, she’s right. When the bills passes and the United States doesn’t collapse into a black hole, the Republicans will stand revealed for the hypocrites that they are… again. At some point, the mainstream media is going to stop running interference for them and that might be the straw that breaks the back….
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:51 pmI believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.
She’s speaking of republicans’ electoral chances, if a healthcare bill passes.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:53 pmI believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.
And that is why you are unfit to lead, Rep. Foxx…
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 pmKeep it classy, Foxx.
In her warped little mind, Matthew Shepard was “askin’ for it”, the Democrats want to kill all senior citizens, and healthcare reform hijacked 4 airplanes on 9/11/01 and killed close to 3,000 people.
It’s clear she’s channelling her inner Jesse Helms.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 pmIgnorance is bliss. Its not health care reform, its health insurance reform stop transfering the issue to something it isnt.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:54 pmWhy is everything with the name “Fox(x)” attached to it so utterly crazy these days?
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:56 pmHealth insurance reform also caused Katrina and forest fires in California and the SF bridge to crack. It also cause rape, incest, drug abuse and mortgage fraud

Close, but I think she’s going more for the Bachmann wannabe persona. And she’s probably frustrated that she’s not telegenic enough to land the teevee interviews that Michelle gets.
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:59 pmRep. Foxx: Health care reform is a bigger threat than ‘any terrorist right now in any country.’
– - FDR: “We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Oh yeah, and health reform.”
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:00 pmShe’s quite obviously an idiot. So the big question is, how did she get elected? I mean, do some folks feel better by voting for someone with an IQ lower than a snake’s ass? It’s the only reason I can think of for people like her, Palin, and Dumbya to get anywhere in politics. [not counting blatant nepotism of course]
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:00 pmThis is an insult to every victim of 9/11.
The Republican party never considered the pursuit of Bin Laden or the iraq War as anything but leverage points for their domestic political power.
They avoided capturing Bin Laden because of his use as a boogeyman. They kept the Iraq ear going so they could play the trason card domestically.
And now? Who cares about Islamofascism when Aetna and Wellpoint are in danger?
Some of us still remember, Rep. Fox.

Oh, republicans are ignorant, forgot.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:00 pm“I believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.”
Terrorist: a person who terrorizes or frightens others.
Ms. Foxx seems to have forgotten about her party when she made this statement…
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:01 pmConservatism is a bigger threat than any terrorist right now in any country.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:01 pmStopping poor suffering shareholders from profiting from healh care and rescission is terrorism!!!
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:02 pmWithout the money for Iraq, we’d have healthcare; thus, healthcare is more dangerous than fighting terrorism! NOT.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:03 pmGOP platform = Groundhog day
“I believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.”
She must mean that President Obama is doing a great job protecting us from terrorists right now; since this bill is really nothing to be afraid of.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:04 pm“And I believe the greatest fear that we all should have to our freedom comes from this room…”
Why doesn’t anyone ever make these people explain exactly what freedom is threatened and why.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:04 pmI believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.
And in any rational deliberative body, a statement such as this would render the source an object of ridicule.
Among the Republican House caucus, however, it elicits a round of “high fives”.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:05 pmWhose afraid of Virginia Foxx???
Correct answer: No one with a lick of sense
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:06 pmWhen will Americans start electing representatives who see themselves as problem solvers and not paid lap dogs for big corporations? Well past time for change.

I realize the odds are against it, but I’m willing to keep an open mind, just in case she does.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:06 pmWith things like the Patriot Act and retro-active immunity, torture, stripping down the Bill of Rights, suspending habeas corpus, and on, Congress has been more of a threat to our freedom than any terrorist.
She wants to retain the freedom to go bankrupt due to medical bills? We may not be free to be denied coverage? We may be sick, but g.d. we’re free?

Um, free from what? And why haven’t we demanded that these things be stopped?
Why does the quote “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself” suddenly pop into my head? If people weren’t afraid of their own shadows, then maybe we wouldn’t have representatives such as Foxx in Congress.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:09 pmI’ve lived in the South all of my life, and believe me, there are millions of these escapees from insane asylums running around down here.
It’s akin to an ongoing, never-ending Invasion of the Body Snatchers movie.
Here, reality and the truth do not matter to people like Congressman Foxx.

November 2nd, 2009 at 2:10 pmFoxx manages to reference “fear” 10 times in that one-minute clip. Not bad. That’s an average of one “fear” every 6 seconds. C’mon, Virginia, surely you can do better than that. Let’s see if your next little screed can break the 5-second mark.

November 2nd, 2009 at 2:14 pm“…I believe the greatest fear that we all should have to our freedom comes from this room — this very room — and what may happen later this week in terms of a tax increase bill masquerading as a health care bill.”
So is her district made up of only single taxpayers earning more than $500,000 and couples earning more than $1,000,000?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:14 pmIf so, then she is correct and her constituents will see more taxes (a miniscule amount mind you, but increases none the less). If her constituents are not earning this kind of money then she is just another typical lying and fear mongering Republiscumbag.
I’d like to know what Rep. Virginia Foxx’s (R-NC) motivation is to lie. Is it greed, racism, hatred, or revenge for losing the Civil War?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:15 pmIs she really the original ‘FoxxSucker’?

November 2nd, 2009 at 2:16 pmShouldn’t there be mandatory sanity checks for Congresspeople? I think we ought to get together a movement to pass a constitutional amendment to that effect. The Goopers couldn’t possibly object, could they? After all, it wouldn’t affect them….
Cheers,

November 2nd, 2009 at 2:18 pmWeak minded individuals cease to look at what they fear, and instead begin to perpetually look for things to fear, real or imaginary.
Well, isn’t that awesome news! Foxx says Obama is keeping us safe from terrorists! I guess that means we don’t actually need to spend the whole $650 billion we just got on the defense bill, and can afford the relatively small $90 billion it’ll take to insure America’s needy.

Her district (not the one I live in, thank heavens) is in the northwestern part of North Carolina, and is heavily Republican (it’s R+15 on the Cook PVI). Therefore, victory generally goes to the candidate who wins the GOP primary.
When Foxx first ran in 2004, her competitor for the nomination, Vernon Robinson, was even more batsh!t crazy than she was.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_Robinson
And after he got beaten by Foxx in the fifth district in 2004, he tried running for the 13th district in 2006 — with one of the most outrageous campaigns ever. If you want some laughs, check this out:

Ryan White was not the individual selected for more hate. It was Matthew Shepard.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:32 pmOk, I am almost entirely everyone at this site is better informed than I am. Are there any initiatives out there to repeal the Patriot Act? Or maybe one to re-instate Habeas Corpus? I might be off topic here, but it seems like the best way to take away some more power from the right is to re-establish some of the freedoms they stole.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:34 pm@59: *Almost entirely sure…..
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:35 pmrep foxx, you are the biggest terrorist threat to the US right now.

November 2nd, 2009 at 2:39 pmOh my Grandma, what little crossed eyes you have!
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:41 pmI would also like to thank Ms. Foxx. For today, at least, we actually have a candidate for craziest/stupidest Representative who isn’t Crazy Shelly (InsaneR-MN.). Though I suppose that batscat Bachmann still has time to reclaim the title since she usually gets the floor after everyone else has left and might show up on FAUX or Larry King.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:44 pmIt has been said that humans:
1. Kill what they hate.
2. Hate what they fear.
3. Fear what they don’t understand.
Since the GOoPers don’t seem to understand much of anything? I think that makes them the most dangerous group in the U.S. today.
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:47 pmImportant clarification for roxsteady.
However, we should recognize that this doesn’t mean Rep. Foxx is not capable of expressing hatred toward Ryan White, just that she hasn’t had the opportunity yet.

Way to support the troops Foxx call them terrorists.
And she is also basically calling those doctors and nurses and other medical personnel, trained by the military, terrorists.
What is wrong with this womans views?
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:23 pmI guess Republicans don’t keep Mirrors in there houses.
Otherwise they would see the evil that the rest of us hate.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:28 pmWhat health care bill is she talking about? The only health reform I see is a handout to the insurance companies, with a weak public option that takes all the poor and sick off the hands of the insurance companies.
The Republicans who oppose this bill are completely blind. This bill as written is nothing more than the status quo to a whole new level. The Congressional Budget Office confirmed what all progressives knew, that the public option as currently written is crap, and that this bill does little or nothing to help people without insurance, or who are unhappy with their insurance.
If I were a Progressive in congress I would vote against this lame bill.Give me single payer, not this handout to private insurance.

After 9/11 and Iraq.. and afghanistan.. and the economic crash.. and bank bailouts.. and the virtual shit storm we’ve watched over the last 8 years… you could throw anything in front of me labeled ‘health care reform’ and I vote yes. The US continues to be the country with the highest proportion of uninsured people in the developed world. It also has the distinction of spending a greater portion of its total economic output on healthcare than any other developed country – just over 17 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) last year.
On average, the US spends twice as much as other developed countries on healthcare.
But even though US citizens pay more for healthcare, they get less of it, resulting in a lowly 37th place ranking among healthcare systems in the world, according to a study by the World Health Organization based on quality and fairness.

November 2nd, 2009 at 7:13 pmTerrists? Hmm. We were attacked by Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush and fifteen Saudi dupes. Osama BL passed away of natural causes in early December 2001. Most of his alleged A and V tapes since then have been Made in USA. See http://www.whatreallyhappened.com for details.
Cheers.
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:22 pmIt is offensive to compare political action with mass murdurers. I think Foxx owes apologies to 3000 in NY, 300 in Madrid… How can this woman be allowed to hold office.
What’s more dangerous than my insurance premium increasing 30% to 100% per year?
What is more dangerous than ignorant national politions?
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:07 pmEarly on in American, should a dignified ‘escape’ from a public forum become necessary, due to an emergency, democrats and republicans may have shared gentlemanly, opposing views?! “Ladies, first!”, could have resounded, from democrats! Whereas, “Men, exit together!”, might have been the rally, from republicans!
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:15 pmThe worst bill ever — OMG

November 2nd, 2009 at 9:03 pmI would love to see Palin, Bachmann, and Foxx compete in a few rounds of the JayWalking All-Stars quiz game on Leno’s new show.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:17 pmFoxx: I believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country.
I call shenanigans. Ten bucks says she would have voted for the Patriot Act if she’d been a legislator in 2002. That’s a bigger threat to the country than any healthcare reform bill.
And seriously, healthcare is more harmful than Osama bin Laden? Really? Or people like Timothy McVeigh? Somehow I think not.

The STUPIDEST POSTER EVER. OMG
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:21 amOIC repugs opinions are lies and they have a right to spread lies.
GMAFB
No she doesn’t have a right to her opinion if it’s based on a lie or lies.
It’s not called opinions it’s call willful ignorance and deceit. It doesn’t a place in civil discord, dummies.
repugs don’t have opinions instead they have a sling shyte mentality because they can’t argue with facts.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:19 amI guess Foxx has to compete with the likes of Bachmann.
Oh, BTW, I thought the LGBT folks were a bigger threat than terrorists to this country?
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:07 amFear is the thought of lunatics like this lady, Michele Bachmann, Palin, Inhofe and the rest of the Limbaugh Beck tea bagging birther nut jobs taking over this country. Now that you should really fear!
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:49 pmShe’s nuttier than a Payday candy bar. Why do those poor misguided people in her district keep her in office…Oh, I forgot: They keep voting her in, and are as nutty as her, too.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:03 pmShe’s delirious. Check her for a bladder infection.
