Armey Meets With Author Of Town Hall Harassment Strategy Memo To Plan Purge Of Moderates From GOP

In late July, ThinkProgress first reported on a memo detailing how conservative activists can successfully disrupt Democratic health care town halls. The memo, authored by a Tea Party Patriots volunteer named Bob MacGuffie, was distributed on a listserv controlled by FreedomWorks — the corporate front group run by Dick Armey that is dedicated to organizing tea parties and other anti-Obama efforts around the country. A member of the listserv, Jenny Beth Martin, blasted out the memo on June 13th, declaring, “We here in CT have developed a strategy for holding our elected officials accountable. We show up en mass at the ‘town hall’ meetings they have!” The tactics included:

– Artificially Inflate Your Numbers: “Spread out in the hall and try to be in the front half. The objective is to put the Rep on the defensive with your questions and follow-up. The Rep should be made to feel that a majority, and if not, a significant portion of at least the audience, opposes the socialist agenda of Washington.”

– Be Disruptive Early And Often: “You need to rock-the-boat early in the Rep’s presentation, Watch for an opportunity to yell out and challenge the Rep’s statements early.”

– Try To “Rattle Him,” Not Have An Intelligent Debate: “The goal is to rattle him, get him off his prepared script and agenda. If he says something outrageous, stand up and shout out and sit right back down. Look for these opportunities before he even takes questions.”

In town hall after town hall during August, the strategy was used to target members of Congress who are considering support of health care reform. Although Armey disputes his relation to the memo, both Rolling Stone and Talking Points Memo have verified that FreedomWorks staffers, like FreedomWorks Florida coordinator Tom Gaitens, control the Tea Party Patriots listserv which distributed the memo. Armey has gone so far as denying even knowing Gaitens, who has worked for FreedomWorks for years and can be seen in the last ten seconds of this ABC News segment handing a microphone to Armey.

Now, the Courant is reporting that Armey plans to go to Fairfield, CT on November 11th for a “strategy session” with conservative activists and MacGuffie, the original author of the town hall harassment strategy.

An announcement sent out by MacGuffie proclaimed that he, like Armey, has actively supported Doug Hoffman’s bid to rid the NY-23 special election of moderate Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava (R-NY). Now, both Armey and MacGuffie are planning to purge the Republican Party of more moderate politicians.

MacGuffie has declared that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) are RINOs (Republicans in name only) who “have routinely abandoned or betrayed us.” Similarly, the next step of Armey’s agenda appears to be an intensified crusade to challenge moderate Republicans in primaries. The Politico reports that Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC), Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL), former Rep. Rob Simmons (R-CT) and other Republicans who have strayed from rigid party-line positions face primaries from candidates inspired by the tea parties and town hall disruption type tactics.

Dick Armey is destroying the Repug Party. When you toss out the Moderate who do you have left? The 20% who are truly nuts? The old, white dudes? Man, talk about a VERY small tent. Good Luck with that Dick. You’ll need it.

  2. Hoodathunk says:

It seems the Republicans are bound and determined to have a purge. Maybe they should study Uncle Joe Stalin. He really liked purges.

Nothing says American like a good old fashioned purge.

  3. The Dogfather says:

This is great news, campers! Let them continue to drink the Palin/Armey kool-aid and purge the more moderate members of the republic party from their increasingly smaller tent — that will ensure that they stay in the minority for years (or decades) to come…

Yer doin’ a heckuva job, Armey…

  4. USNclerk says:

    – Try To “Rattle Him,” Not Have An Intelligent Debate
Wow, someone’s getting desperate. Encouraging shouting matches instead of debate, the GOP follows this advice and I give them total party destruction in about 12 months.

  5. Dave N says:

Similarly, the next step of Armey’s agenda appears to be an intensified crusade to challenge moderate Republicans in primaries.

Wow…Rethug vs. Cancervative in the primaries?? Those could get very nasty…

Nothing like letting them do our work for us.

    [snicker]

  6. raynman says:

and so it begins… the further disintegration of the Republican Party

  7. flavorino says:

stand up and shout out and sit right back down

They are not interested in other people’s thought and ideas.
They are not interested in intelligent discussions.

  8. mike from Arlington says:

So much for loyal opposition. Now all we will have left is a bunch of raving maniacs.

  9. P.D. says:

I already read that the police were called in a few distubances in the NY election. Turns out Hoffman supporters are getting agressive. They had some broad who didn’t even live in the STATE heckling voters. This is what the Repug Party has become. A bunch of irrational bullies who would deny citizens the right to vote. And they call Obama a dictator? WTF?

  10. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

OMG! Whatever in world will Joe Scarborg do now?

  11. Zimzone says:

Dick Armey now has an Army of Dicks?

Q: What’s the difference between Dick Armey & Dick Morris?

A: One sucks toes, the other just blows.

  12. pete says:

It’s been so long since we’ve witnessed the death of a party in this country that it’s hard to be certain but, I don’t see any way the GOP survives after the purge.

Wait. I dont owe shareholders anything. I didnt take their money.

Why do they want to make a debt peon out of me?

  14. Buckie Boy says:

Well, one has to think by all of this that Armey is a Dick.

  15. EnnuiDivine says:

So, they’ve deemed Rob Simmons a RINO? I guess that’s how Dodd will win re-election: Simmons is rejected by the insane CT GOP in favour of a teabagger.

It’s very unlikely to happen, though. Unlike in the NY Congressional races, primaries are actually voted on by the people, rather than the parties. Still, it’s an entertaining thought.

As far as the GOP shedding Graham and Inglis…that’s just sad. It’s SC, so you KNOW the voters are capable of going to the reactionary right. If Graham is primaried out in 2014, you’ll have DeMint and someone who, quite possibly, is so far to the right that DeMint comes off as sane and rational by comparison. Yikes.

  16. Dr. Hussein Matt says:

Great plan!! Purge the moderates and make the GOPigs an even greater minority!! BRILLIANT!

  17. dasm says:

It’s the lying bullies like Armey & McGuffie who have abandoned & betrayed the U.S. They are hateful, ignorant throwbacks to everything that was bad about the 1950s.

Shortere Dick: Act like a whacko!!

  21. Hoodathunk says:

The Republicans are counting on the fact that most Americans have no real idea of what it means to have a single Party claiming ideological supremacy. Where only one party stands for a country and that party sets the rules for what reality is.

If they keep it up, they are going to have to pick a state to house the gulags. Maybe North Dakota, its kind of like Siberia.

  22. Xisithrus says:

    Shortest Dick: Be the whacko!

  23. P.D. says:

This situation in NY is getting uglier. Turns out there are a lot of disturbances. Now Hoffman supporters are claiming Owen’s supporters are the hecklers. I find that odd, don’t you? A bunch of hippie loving, Liberal, Democrats turning towards violence? I’m sure Glen Beck and Limpballs will have a huge segment on THAT.

  24. Yeoman Warder says:

Very clever these Republicans, amazing they could come up with

RULES FOR DISRUPTING A TOWN MEETING,

    all on their own!

Rule 1: Power is not only what you have, but what an opponent thinks you have. If your organization is small, hide your numbers in the dark and raise a din that will make everyone think you have many more people than you do.

Rule 2: Never go outside the experience of your people.
The result is confusion, fear, and retreat.

Rule 3: Whenever possible, go outside the experience of an opponent. Here you want to cause confusion, fear, and retreat.

Rule 4: Make opponents live up to their own book of rules. “You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.”

Rule 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.

Rule 6: A good tactic is one your people enjoy. “If your people aren’t having a ball doing it, there is something very wrong with the tactic.”

Rule 7: A tactic that drags on for too long becomes a drag. Commitment may become ritualistic as people turn to other issues.

Rule 8: Keep the pressure on. Use different tactics and actions and use all events of the period for your purpose. “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this that will cause the opposition to react to your advantage.”

Rule 9: The threat is more terrifying than the thing itself. When Alinsky leaked word that large numbers of poor people were going to tie up the washrooms of O’Hare Airport, Chicago city authorities quickly agreed to act on a longstanding commitment to a ghetto organization. They imagined the mayhem as thousands of passengers poured off airplanes to discover every washroom occupied. Then they imagined the international embarrassment and the damage to the city’s reputation.

Rule 10: The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative. Avoid being trapped by an opponent or an interviewer who says, “Okay, what would you do?”

Rule 11: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it. Don’t try to attack abstract corporations or bureaucracies. Identify a responsible individual. Ignore attempts to shift or spread the blame.

  30. delafield says:

If I was a moderate Republican who was targeted by Dick Armey, I would ask the FBI for protection. Extreme, right wing rhetoric, similar to Dick Armey’s, caused Timothy McVeigh to kill over 300 innocent Americans in Oklahoma.

  31. P.D. says:

OMG! Hundreds of Hoffman supporters were bused in. Also a anti-abortion group that is literally shouting down voters on their way to vote. I wonder how the people of this district feel about these tactics? These people hijacked this district. Absolutely amazing.

  32. RUCerious says:

YES! Hey! Dumbass DICK! If you need a place to meet, you can use my garage! Please, kick all those moderates, women, hispanics, blacks, gays and non-troglodytic humans out of your irrelvant party. Purge Party!

  38. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

    Let’s relabel these tactics:

    1. Lie (”artificially inflate” sounds too innocent)
    2. Act like a braying ass
    3. Be stupid

Armey needs to be asked if these tactics are supported by our American history and foundation – from the Founding Fathers to the Bible. Make him justify these tactics, if he can.

  39. Xisithrus says:

All this effort to get one representative who cant change health insurance reform [the bill is in the senate duh]

  40. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Campaign signs, buttons, literature, and other forms of political speech are prohibited (at least here in Ohio) 100 feet from a polling area. If any of Hoffman’s bussed in stooges violated this ban in NY they should be arrested and villified in the media. What are the chances of that? I continue to dream of a “more perfect union”.

  41. Mark701 says:

The following is a description of tactics used by Hitler’s Brownshirts. It bears a striking resemblance to what is going on inside the crazy wing of the GOP.

The term brownshirt tactics refers to the usage of fear, terror, and images thereof to make people vote for a specific party, notably the populist demagoguery party that promises to be tough on terror, while in reality being the one clandestinely instilling the fear in the first place. The name comes from the color of the uniforms of the Nazi members of the SA.
As with all propaganda, for it to be maximally effective the link between the message and the one benefiting from the action must not be revealed. It is a risky strategy for a party to employ their own violent party members. It is safer to provoke or incite others to carry out acts that scare people (e.g., baiting terrorists, or using hate speech to manipulate mentally disturbed persons to commit crimes), as long as this provocation or incitement is not generally understood by the electorate. In either case it may be expected that an electorate not trained in critical thinking will vote in higher numbers for the more hawkish party.

  42. P.D. says:

I wonder why MSM isn’t reporting the incidents in NY.? You know they have a ton of press up there. Could it be the MSM is a little leary of letting the public know about the GOP tactics? After all, the MSM helped create them. By labling these clowns as ‘Mainstream’ they help create the image that these people are average citizens. Not the 20% fringe group they are.

  43. Hoodathunk says:

We are finally seeing what a certain element of our country has been exporting for decades. Coordinated political disruption targeted on replacing moderate to liberal governments in order to further the economic gains of a small, but influential group with no loyalty to anything but profit.

Evidently the Republicans figure what is good enough for every other third world country is finally good enough for the US.

  44. kasinca says:

The implosion of the rethuglican party is so much fun. The race to the bottom by the knuckle dragging, bottom feeding, troglodytes. Hang on to that base. What is the average age? 65+? Wingnuts.

Rather than PARTICIPATE in our democratic traditions, the party of no is only able to obstruct and destroy the fabric of our society.
Beef up the security, and arrest these foul nazi-like authority craving lunatics.

  47. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

These are scary times in our country and I’m not talking about unemployment, loss of jobs overseas or affordable health care.

I’m talking about the republican party and what they have become. Never before in the history of our political system has one party been so infested with such a vast number of crazy people, liars, nutjobs, extremists, corporatists, religious zealots, Anti-Americans, conspiracy theorists, fascists, racists and war mongers at one time.

I hope by 2010 & 2012 the American people haven’t forgotten how/why and who got our country into the mess we are in today. The Democrats aren’t perfect but they do care more for the average American. I hope all of the independent voters out there aren’t fooled by the right wing tea bag stunts, the repeated republican lies and distortions.

Perhaps the end is really near when people like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity, Michele Bachmann, Steve King become the leaders and insane, twisted vocal mouthpieces of one of our political parties.

  48. missmolly says:

Now, both Armey and MacGuffie are planning to purge the Republican Party of more moderate politicians.
    _____________________________________________________________

Meaning they will challenge any moderate Republican candidate in the GOP primary with a wingnut. This will be good for the Democrats, since a moderate Republican would grab far more of the political middle than the wingnut would, which would normally be a problem for the Dems.

Who knew that Dick Armey and Bob MacGuffie would expend so much energy helping the Democrats?

  55. Bob says:

How do you regain the majority if you purge anyone from your minority party?

It’s so stupid, it’s sad, and yet still funny. Kick out the moderates then they’ll be independents, and you’re left with people who vote in crayon according to the voices in their heads.

It’s the moderates who should be purging.

  58. Hoodathunk says:

Evidently it is difficult for Republicans to talk with anyone who doesn’t parrot the same way they do. They are just following the KISS principle.

The 2012 Republican National Convention is looking for venues. It appears to be between Rosie’s Roadside Diner in Nashville and the defunct Dollar Store outside Chattanooga. By the first of the year, just about any phone booth will probably do.

  66. the orj says:

This is great news. The more moderates the Republicans kick out of their party the more they shift to the lunatic fringe of the right. That means they will continue to alienate themselves from independent and moderate voters across the country. So long GOP, it was nice knowing you!

Majority of Republicans are uncompromising people who want the whole country to be run their way, from religion,to marriage to health and many other issues.

Scenario #2: The Conservative Wins …encouraging the Radical Right to continue its purging of Moderation …which won’t win many other elections out side of the South.

Either Way… I believe Americans are a lot more in the Purple/middle that the teabaggers and Dick Armey think.

    2) Peter Schiff, (who served as an economic adviser to Ron Paul, not that he bothered to actually vote for Paul in 2008, and whom is the darling of a fringe group of tea baggers who admire his perceived economic prowess by railing against taxes and making gobs of money).

I think that they’ll go with McMahon. She’s blond, she’s pretty tough and she just hired a very connected campaign manager (David Cappiello, who although he lost in his bid for a seat in Congress last year, was honored with a fundraiser hosted by Kissinger at his house in Kent, CT, and whose attendees included G.H.W. I agree but lets take a closer look at this so called, alleged liberal media which the right wing cries about:

During the eight years of Bush did the ‘liberal media’ give a 24/7 national platform to 9/11 truthers? To those concerned about Bush’s former alcohol and cocaine abuse? To those who questioned Bush’s Texas and Alabama Air National Guard duty…or lack of? Did they cover Bush’s screwing of stockholders in Harken Oil? Did they bring up Neil Bush’s involvement in the S&L scandal?

Yet during Barack Obama’s first 10 months into his presidency the same alleged ‘liberal media’ has given a 24/7 national platform to birthers, to those claiming Obama is a Muslim not a Christian, they’ve covered his ties to William Ayers and Reverend Wright, they’ve questioned on programs whether President Obama is the anti-Christ, they have people on their programs who call Obama a socialist, a fascist and a communist, they have bobbleheads who are more critical of Obama in his first 10 months then they were in Bush’s full 8 years as president.

The liberal media myth is just that, a myth by right wing radicals and whiners. Now shall we talk about the extreme right wing controlled AM Hate radio….any trolls out there??

  100. marlow says:

Owens takes the NY 23rd… How’s that workin out for ya, D-baggers?

  101. A Patriot Acting says:

OWENS WINS! DICK’S ARMEY CAN’T SHOOT STRAIGHT! NEWS AT ELEVEN!

  102. DMC says:

Just so I’m clear, “moderate” and “tolerant” are inter-changable here, right?

  103. www.fikrinne.blogspot.com says:

If I was a moderate Republican who was targeted by Dick Armey, I would ask the FBI for protection. Extreme, right wing rhetoric, similar to Dick Armey’s, caused Timothy McVeigh to kill over 300 innocent Americans in Oklahoma.

  104. marlow says:

    Fight on, dewshbaggers, fight on…

  105. skyreader7 says:

So the republicans have purged the “too liberal” republicans, now they are purging the “too moderate” republicans, then it will be the “not conservative enough” republicans, then the not “far enough to the right” republicans, and so on, and so on until they are a party of One. Now that’s a brilliant election strategy. I’d like the meet the One. What a perfect little republican he or she will be. Palin or Bachmann come to mind.
