Pawlenty Refuses To Say That He’s ‘Glad’ Olympia Snowe Is In The Republican Party

Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) appeared today on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss the ideological direction of his party. Pawlenty, a late backer of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, has increasingly staked out a far right position within the GOP. He recently reversed his position on clean energy legislation, slamming the concept of cap-and-trade in June after calling for a regional cap-and-trade program in 2007. In September, he also flirted with the idea of embracing the fringe “tenther” movement to attempt to nullify health reform in his state.

The right-wing faction of the GOP, emboldened by its success in forcing out moderate Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava (R-NY) in the NY-23 special election, has called for more purging of politicians who do not follow an orthodox conservative voting line. After talking about the developments in NY-23, the Morning Joe hosts asked Pawlenty repeatedly if he wants Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) — also a moderate — in the Republican Party. Pawlenty refused to answer the question, and again refused to say that he is even “glad” Snowe is Republican:

SCARBOROUGH: Are you glad that Olympia Snowe is a Republican?

PAWLENTY: Well, the people of Maine–

SCARBOROUGH: I’m asking you because we’re talking about this litmus test […] Are you glad Olympia Snowe is in your party?

PAWLENTY: Well, I think Olympia Snowe is somebody who is more liberal than most Republicans would like [...]

BRZEZINSKI: Was that a ‘yes,’ Governor?

PAWLENTY: Well, you know look it the people of Maine have an open process, they selected her.

Pawlenty’s adoption of a dogmatic conservative approach to being Republican was compounded by his explanation of the “minimum standards” for being Republican in his eyes:

TODD: Governor, what is the minimum standard for being a Republican? Define minimum standard for being a moderate Republican.

PAWLENTY: Well, you can’t be for card check, you can’t get endorsed by ACORN, you can’t support the stimulus bill, you can’t be for bank bailouts, that would be a starting point, Chuck. But if you’re for all those things, you’re probably not a Republican.

Watch it:

Of course, like Pawlenty’s sudden flip flop on climate change, his own right-wing standards for being Republican might force him to purge himself. Although he says “you can’t be for bank bailouts,” Pawlenty supported the $700 billion Bush administration bank bailouts of 2008. While he has now joined the ACORN-bashing bandwagon, in 2007, Pawlenty signed an anti-predatory mortgage law crafted in part by representatives from ACORN. And while Pawlenty is eager to bash the stimulus, his top economic adviser has toured his state, touting its success and the “tangible results from this funding.”

Update Snowe responded to Pawlenty in an interview with Politico, decrying "litmus tests" and saying that national Republicans could "probably borrow" from her "in terms of being in touch with your constituents."

Keep courting those 20%er whack-a-doodles pawlewnty by throwing moderates such as yourself under the wheels of the bus. then report back to us on how well your presidential bid goes.

  3. EnnuiDivine says:

Forget it, Pawlenty. You can never be as “conservative” (read: off-the-wall fkin insane) as Palin/King/Santorum and others who have hinted at runs in 2012. You’re just embarassing yourself.

Why are the moderates in the GOP just taking the abuse? This should not be a party of arch conservatives; let them splinter off and form a Lord of the Flies party.

The reactionary right is out for blood. Let them feed on each other.

  4. raynman says:

Pawlenty is reinventing himself to become a viable candidate for President in the ‘new’ Republican Party. And the new Republican Party wants nothing to do with moderate or mildly conservative Republicans (which Pawlenty was) anymore.

So, rather than running as his own man and trying to bring the Republicans back toward the middle, he caves.

Sheeeyit, EnnuiD, you sayin’ there won’t be a Palin/Pawlenty ticket, that maybe Timmie can’t pull off a conservative enough act for Rupert “Murder” Murdoch and Roger Ailes to consider buying him a Fux Noise Conspiracy canididate. And I had such high hopes for comedy in 2012. I’m disappointed, I tell ya, disappointed…

  16. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

And you think the gummint can handle a healthcare program? What a joke!
    _____________________________________________________________

I don’t know where you live, but I find it fascinating that the black community in your area attends federally funded and and administrated public schools. I never knew there was such a thing. In my state (North Carolina), we get some federal money, but the administration and most of the funding of the public schools (what generally determines if they’re good or bad) is handled by the state and county. The one federal dictum that fouls everything up is the No Child Left Behind Act — brought to us by the GOP. I agree with you that contributes to failure.

But instead of comparing local school districts with a federal health program, why not compare a federal health program with a federal health program? If you believe a health program administered by the federal government program can lead to nothing but failure, then you must believe that Medicare has failed. And if that’s the case, why are so few seniors willing to give it up?

Yeh, if your into electroshock therapy, tainted water and unedible food and held hostage for tax dollars, sick or not.

    Kenneth says:

    ——————————————————————————–

Hitler pulled germany out of a depression just like bush was going to.

    November 3rd, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Bush put us into a depression, you numbskull ….

  99. Xisithrus says:

Kenneth says: Hitler pulled germany out of a depression just like bush was going to.

Umm, Kenneh, Bush started TWO, count them TWO wars of choice and we still slid into a recession.

  100. Kenneth says:

  101. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    You’re embarrassing yourself, Kenny.

    Please… carry on.

I’m SURE you’re convincing the undecided which side of the fight to join.

    Please carry on.

Give him some room, folks. He’s doing our job for us, and we couldn’t possibly be as persuasive as he us. You go, Kenny!

  102. gummitch says:

    Kenneth says:

    Uncle Ho,
I too have VA benefits and right now they are really jacking me around. Long story. Delays! Delays! Delays! Met another veteran at a recent town hall meeting who is refused services by the VA. So much for efficiency and service in a Gummint run program.

Because a private insurance company would never delay you, jack you around, or deny service, right?

You really do live in a tiny bubble separated from the real world.

  103. USNclerk says:

@95. Yeah, he also launched a multi-front war, just like Bush did. He ruined a nation, much like Bush very nearly did. And if memory served, he blew his own head off rather than stand up and take the consequences, much like what Bush would probably do if this country ever pushed for a war crimes tribunal. GTFO you stupid twat.

  104. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    Don’t argue with him.

Let Kenny go on and on and on.

    So… you were expounding, Kenny?

  105. Xisithrus says:

Kenneth says: bush should have declared martial law like we thought he was going to do to keep America from falling into the hands of commies.

That would have destroyed the economy and what you are promoting is rule by a King with his exclusionary communal cronys.

  106. okie dokie says:

My post got lost in space at about 1:08pm.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

  107. Zimzone says:

‘Living With Less in the Land of Pawlenty’

I had a long talk with my State Senator 2 weeks ago.

He recalled how Pawlenty will get up on a podium & make promises. Afterward, as Timmeh walks down the hallway, he was overheard saying, ‘I’m not going to do anything I just told them’.

This is the Mullet Man who would be King…

  108. dbadass says:

And you think the gummint can handle a healthcare program? What a joke!

Kenneth why do you think the “gummint” can handle protecting you from freedom haters that hate your freedom? Are you one of those selectively outraged individuals?

  109. gummitch says:

I think Kenneth has been namejacked, although it’s not clear that he has noticed.

  110. Uncle Ho says:

    Kenny-boy sez:

Did you ever consider that your health care might improve if you weren’t such a first-class shit?

  111. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Uncle Ho (110), that’s exactly what I was thinking. It’s also interesting that Kenny-boy belittled the education of people in his local (sic). Local what? Or did he mean locale?

  112. Uncle Ho says:

    PLC;
methinks Kenny-boy went off the deep-end with his latest rants. Send for the boys in their clean white coats with their butterfly nets, a nice strait-jacket, and padded cell for the schmuck.

  113. pags2 says:

This is going to be interesting to watch because Pawlenty is trying to pick up votes with the far right. If he moves to the center, he will lose those votes. Eventually, he will have to take a stand on the purging of moderates in the party. It is a no win situation, because either way he will lose support.

  114. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Uncle Ho, the “Republican crazy” makes H1N1 seem pretty benign and limited in comparison.

  115. Marie says:

    OMG
I am reading Ken’s comments — what a nut case. He thinks Hitler was smart. He doesn’t like his free health care. He thinks Halliburton is good. He thinks Bush was going to save the economy that he nearly destroyed.

What time zone does he live — it is surely too early to be that drunk!

  116. Uncle Ho says:

    Kenny-boy;

BTW- we did have a Hitler wannabe running the country, from 2001-2009, the would-be fuhrer’s name was George W. Bush.
Remember, he was the self-proclaimed “deciderer”.

  117. NinerFan says:

    Kenneth: “Ninerfan,
You keep taxing the people who provide the jobs in this country and sooner or later there will be no income for the gummint to take and you will see a real depression. You can only go to the well so often before it dries up.
    Packerfan”

HOW ‘BOUT THAT NUMBER 4, PACKERFAN?! ISN’T HE JUST FANTASTIC?! You wouldn’t believe how disappointing it was for him to beat the Niners with 10 seconds left. Oh well, that’s a Hall-of-Famer for ya. Oh right, you would believe – he’s torn your heart out twice already this season. Sucks to be you.

Now, to your ridiculous non-point – raising the top marginal rate would make it 38.5%, the lowest top marginal rate in the world. During the 50’s, the top marginal rate was 91%; 60’s – 75%. Clinton raised it by 3 points to 38%. During all of those decades, job creation was better than during the Bush era. So, what the hell are you talking about exactly?

  118. NinerFan says:

And, again Kenneth, if you advocate free market health care solutions, getting your health care from the VA is pure hypocrisy. Stand by your values, man. Refuse the VA and get into the private insurance market…. or shut up.

  119. NinerFan says:

Kenneth: “bush should have declared martial law like we thought he was going to do to keep America from falling into the hands of commies.”

Death threats on the President are 400 times higher than normal. To keep the country out of the hands of those who actually support our enemies from the last World War, maybe Obama should declare martial law. What do you think, Hitler lover?

  120. USNclerk says:

Ladies and Gentleman, I think the Hitler=Bush comparison has rendered Kenny unable contribute anymore lunacy except as a VDT.

  121. suziq says:

Do a little research on how many times the gopee voted against veteran’s funding that would have made the VA more efficient. I, too, have experience with VA benefits – 40 years ago!! Not much has changed, thanks to republicans.

  122. NinerFan says:

Kenneth, the neonazi traitor: “Hitler pulled germany out of a depression just like bush was going to.”

Hey, stupid. FDR was able to do that without slave labor from military conquest. His one mistake was the only Hitler-like thing he ever did – forced internment of Japanese Americans. But, these are historical facts. I know you are more moved by “foolish rules from ancient date, designed to make you feel great while you bend, fold and mutilate those unbelievers from the neighboring state.” Just like Hitler. He was a very good Catholic – or at least he claimed to be.

  123. USCKitty says:

Kenneth says: Halliburton could do a much better job with healthcare than the gummint.

The only thing that they would do better is unfortunately gang-rape and war crimes.

  124. NinerFan says:

The VA runs at about a 5% overhead. “Kenneth, the Neonazi traitor” would prefer the private insurance method with it’s 15 to 30% overheads because Ken wants to make sure corporate middle-men take their cuts at our expense.

But, strangely, “Kenneth, the Neonazi traitor” feels that his position is for everyone else, but not him. He uses the services of the VA. Ken, why don’t you live your convictions. If it’s good enough for the rest of us, it’s good enough for you. Refuse that socialist system and get into the free-market soup with the rest of us. I’m sure you’ll just loooovvve it!

  125. USCKitty says:

    Kenneth says:
    Ninerfan,
You keep taxing the people who provide the jobs in this country and sooner or later there will be no income for the gummint to take and you will see a real depression. You can only go to the well so often before it dries up.
    Packerfan

Right, we reduced their rates and STILL had job losses…

  126. NinerFan says:

Maybe this is why “Kenneth, the Neonazi Traitor” likes Hitler so much:

“My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice… And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and exposed.”

—Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922, published in My New Order

  127. NinerFan says:

Hey Neonazi Packerfan, how ’bout that number four! Isn’t he just adorable?!

  128. Zimzone says:

    NinerFan says:
Hey Neonazi Packerfan, how ’bout that number four! Isn’t he just adorable?!

That was very gracious of you to applaud #4 beating the ‘9ers. It was also a great game by both teams.

I didn’t know Kenneth was a Packer fan, though, but it figures.

Kenny, would you like some whine with your cheese? You Packerbackers were truly obnoxious Sunday. Get over it. Ted Thompson is the problem, not Brett Favre.

My favorite sign at that game: ‘We’ll never forget you, Brent!’

  129. NinerFan says:

Zimzone: “That was very gracious of you to applaud #4 beating the ‘9ers. It was also a great game by both teams.”

Thank you. It WAS a great game and you’ve got to give it up for the guy when he does something as spectacular as that. How many times did I see Montana or Young do that to other teams?

  130. AaronQ of Maine says:

Maine Votes most democratic on issues. The only reason we have republican senators is because they are moderates. If they decided to go hardcore conservative they would be voted out so fast. The republican party lost a ton of seats because they refuse to listen to the people. Now they are criticizing the republicans who actually won because of their connection to their constituents. Everyone said republicans are going to eat each other and that process is in full effect now.

The republican party is supposed to keep the democrats in check. Which they have totally failed at. They refuse to do their job and instead focus on lies and non-issues like birthers the death panels. Snowe is one of only a few that still lives in reality.

  131. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Kenneth,

If I believed in God, I think I might pray for your soul. But, since I don’t, you’re on your own.

  132. NinerFan says:

AaronQ: “Snowe is one of only a few that still lives in reality.”

If you don’t get universal healthcare with a legitimate public option, you can thank Snowe.

  133. Leftside Annie says:

Hurrah for the Donner Party! Better watch out, Olympia Snowe – YOU’RE ON THE MENU!!!

  134. Rab says:

I have Pawlenty as governor and remember this important fact, “he never received more than 50% of the vote in MN as governor”, if were not for third party candidates he would NOT be governor.

He is leaving our state in the worst shape it’s ever been because he took the “no new taxes” pledge.

  135. marlow says:

Pawlenty was an idiot before he was a moron.

  136. mike2 says:

“you can’t get endorsed by ACORN” so all ACORN needs to do is endorse vulnerable Republicans and get them to be abandoned by their party.

Please sir, may I have some more!

  137. Kenneth says:

    #89, 90, 92, 95 & 100.

Somebody did highjack my login name.

  138. EugeneDebs says:

    Kenneth

It looks like you were namejacked you are still a moron.
