Conservatives Mock 72-Hour Window That They Requested To Review Health Care Reform Legislation

In September, Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) organized a discharge petition in order to force a vote on a resolution that would “require that legislation and conference reports be available on the Internet for 72-hours before consideration by the House.” “It’s just common sense: Americans should be allowed to read the text of major bills before Congress votes on them,” said House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH).

The House Democratic leadership eventually agreed to post health care legislation online for 72-hours before bringing it up for a vote. But once they got what they wanted, conservatives started to complain that 72-hours wasn’t enough. “They are only giving you 72-hours to read it,” said Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) on Glenn Beck’s radio show today. “So they obviously are embarrassed of their own bill.”

On WorldNetDaily’s radio show today, Rep. John Linder (R-GA) claimed that Democrats were only including the 72-hour waiting period because they needed more time to twist arms for votes:

LINDER: I would not be surprised if they sent us home Friday and bring us back a week or so later to see if they can get the votes because I do not believe they have the votes now.

HOST: What makes you think that?

LINDER: If they had the votes, they’d have voted on it already. They would not have worried about the 72-hours. That 72-hours is for them to beat up their own members, not for the public to read the bill. If they had those votes, they’d cram it down now and they clearly do not.

Listen here:

Despite their current complaints about the 72-hour time period, both Bachmann and Linder signed the discharge petition seeking the 72-hours.

Repugs are so predictable and redundant.
It’s always the same with them — first complain about something, get a result, and then complain again.
When will the Democrats learn — the next time repugs complain, tell them to go Cheney theselves.

  2. Virtual Pebble says:

    Choose one of the following;

    A) We want 72 hours.

    B) We don’t care if there’s 72 hours.

    C) You Democrats forced 72 hours.

    D) You Democrats gotta have 72 hours to whip your members.

“All of the above” is available only to Republipimp members who’ve neglected their meds today. I smell a certain giddiness in the air; probably just Batshit Shelley gargling patchouli oil again…

  3. missmolly says:

The Republicans would complain about this if they were given 72 YEARS to mull it over.

It’s time to stand up to the obstructionists and forge ahead — knocking them down if need be.

  4. The Dogfather says:

“So they obviously are embarrassed of their own bill.”

Exactly what language is this that Ms. Bachmann (R-Batshittia) is speaking? She obviously was absent in 4th grade when they taught proper use of prepositions…

  5. Badger says:

    Cmon,

These Bills will be presented to the house and Senate…and Amendments will be voted on..

and they they will undergo reconcilliation…and be voted on again…

plenty of time to “read the Bills”….except some parts are hardly in English.

  6. 5th Estate says:

I think want the Republicans really wanted was for the entire 1,900 page bill to be posted on Twitter.

  7. LibertyLover says:

Twisting arms for votes? Calling Tom Delay!!!

Keeping votes open past time? Calling Republicans!

Projecting much? Sheesh, these Repubs have a short memory.

  8. 5th Estate says:

Or how about having the entire bill included in the plot of the most favorite right wing show, “24″?

  9. Marie says:

The aide who helped turn Rep. Michele Bachmann into a controversial mainstay of cable news has informed colleagues that she’s quitting – just as the firebrand Republican congresswoman prepares for her biggest media moment yet.
Multiple sources have confirmed that Michelle Marston, a veteran Hill aide, is leaving Bachmann’s office.

One republican lawmaker said (paraphrased), “when your captain’s crazy, you jump ship.”

  10. RUCerious says:

Yes, children we know you want 72 weeks to dither over this.
You still have to go to bed at 8:30 PM…

  11. MadasHelinVA says:

It doesn’t matter whenever you give pugs what they want because they are NEVER SATISFIED with anything even when it is something they ‘setup‘. Nothing pleases them so progressives need to quit trying to please them by telling them to STFU!

  12. Marie says:

Officials are telling The Associated Press that AARP–the seniors’ lobby–will endorse the health care overhaul bill that House Democrats are preparing to take to the floor.

  15. WillWrite4Food says:

This was a farce from the start; these right-wingers can’t be intelligent enough to be able to read, c’mon.

  16. 5th Estate says:

Oh, well done Matt Corley for this exemplary post that is so illustrative of the mendacity and bankruptcy of both the GOP and it’s enabling media flunkies.

I think Matt deserves an award for his sharp eyes and ears. May I suggest it take the form of a “Golden Petard”—as-in “hung by his own petard” ?

It could be a monthly award.

  17. Rab says:

Bachmann and most of the repug knuckle draggers have a reading comprehension of a grape nut so what would it matter if they were given an eternity to read it. Hey repugs, if you were gonna enter heaven, would you stop God and demand to see the rules of heaven before entering…..thought so.

  18. Above the Clouds says:

What difference does it make how many hours Bachmann’s staff spends with the bill? She’s never going to agree to ANYTHING with a “D” attached to it.

  19. RUCerious says:

    mlknez says: …
Then write your congressperson and ask them to email it to you.

  20. 5th Estate says:

Michelle Bachmann! Is that you secretly voting me down? You little minx! :D

  21. Rab says:

Who is the chickendung troll voting down, man up for once in your life.

  22. Pennsylvanianne says:

“they are embarassed of their own bill.”
I hate when people interchange words like “embarassed” and “ashamed” and think they take the same prepositions. Bachman, certainly not the shining light of her party, shows her lack of intelligence, but not just in terms of English grammar but with the actual facts of this bill’s conception. Perhaps SHE is ashamed of her inability to sit down with this bill and read it in three days. Clueless in Minnesota.

  23. dbadass says:

Hasn’t she slit her wrists yet?

  24. dbadass says:

Not bloody likely. Still the pussy’s votes have no legs…

  25. 5th Estate says:

mlknez says: 72 hours would be plenty for a 200 page concise bill. Nobody would complain about that. The fact that it is 1990 pages with references all over the place including to documents outside of the 1990 pages makes 72 hours not enough. I would like more time to be able to understand all of the salient points to consider.

    mlknez,

    1) are you saying that you could understand the entire bill if given enough time to read every single piece of it including all its references?

    2) are you saying that the bill ( or any other bill for that matter) should be presented as a summary of immediately relevant points in plain English that anyone can basically understand given a few hours to read it?

    3) Are you proposing that, as the bill isn’t in a 200 page format, the rest of the nation needs to wait until you personally have dully digested the bill as it is and given it your approvall/disapproval?

    4) all of tha baive?
    5) some of th above)
    6) you’d like to rephrase or expand /clarify your comment?

  26. Powkat says:

Sorry about Greg Walden. He’s the only Republican congress critter in the state. And we can’t get rid of him because he represents Eastern Oregon which is more like Idaho than Oregon.

  27. dbadass says:

  28. MapleStreet says:

So what’s the problem here? I just wanted to give Georgie some BatSh!t Skull!

  30. missmolly says:

Seventy-two hours is plenty of time. Especially since virtually every incarnation of the bill during the design process, and every proposed amendment manages to find its way to the internet now. There has been absolutely no shortage of time for us to dissect, parse, and argue over every little detail while Congress does the same thing.

I am generally not in favor of mandating “waiting periods” for legislation. The lawmaking process is already about as efficient as sucking a salami through a straw. Requiring that wheels come to a grinding halt for every piece of legislation so the public can look at it and give their approval just slows everything down further.

We should be able to trust the people we elect to make decisions for us. And if we can’t trust them, we need to elect people we DO trust.

  31. ralph the wonder llama says:

    mlknez says:
72 hours would be plenty for a 200 page concise bill.

6 hours would be plenty for a 200-page concise bill.

If Republicans figured 72 hours wasn’t enough time, they should have asked for however much time their lobbyists needed.

  32. majii says:

#13– A copy of the entire bill is online, and according to Rachel Maddow, no reading is required, only listening.
    Psst! It’s on audio!

  33. Purple State says:

    Stop complaining, ConservaSens.

You asked for a 72-hour window.

Dems gave you a 72-hour window.

Now you complain that the 72 hours aren’t enough AND that the 72 hours are TOO much.

You know what that makes you?

    LAWYERS.

And we know how popular they are.

  34. okie dokie says:

    Does Bachmann need more time
so she can twitter the entire text of the Health Care bill,
or just time enough to to spin it to her disliking?

  36. dixie blood says:

Typically a bill of this size (and this ain’t the first) is divided up among different staff members and then they report back on their section to the sitting member they work for.

  37. Lefty Liberal says:

This from the party that spawned Joe “You Lie” Wilson, who had to look up the word “dithering” in a dictionary. If you gave these morons 72 years, they still couldn’t read a bill because they would have to spend all of their time looking up words that have more than one syllable.

How can we keep electing morons to congress like the ones we have now?

  38. sscncturn64 says:

She is one skinney ass ugly btch.

  39. pete says:

The sad fact is that none of the GOoPers have any intention of reading anything sponsored by Democrats. And the bits they do read always seem to say the exact opposite of what they claim.

  40. Marie says:

Did I hear there will be a House vote on health care on Sturday?

  41. pete says:

It’s also fair to note that the bill needs to be this long in order to address every paranoid, xenophobic, conspiracy theory that’s thrown at it.

  42. sscncturn64 says:

You repugs keep asking for more time. You losers had eight years with bush, look how fcked up our country is because of the repugs and bush. Sorry, you are out of time. The adults are in charge of the clock now. STFU, and watch our country prosper.

  43. okie dokie says:

(I was eating, and kind of trying to ignore it)
making a tally of Obama’s kept and broken promises during his first “year”
(I guess nine months is a year in 21st century talking head time).
One of his broken promises, they said, was signing a bill into law within less than five days. They only mentioned two of 14 supposedly broken promises, and something like 54 kept, out of 500.
This should keep the trolls occupied for a while, anyway.

Nah, you’re talking real high quality attention deficit disorder with our trolls; give them a minute or two trying to understand two adjacent word in a sentence, they get bored and wander off to jack someone else’s thread. Try to give them an example of broken promises, and if the first one isn’t their favorite pseudo-promise from Fux Noise, off they go. The only thing they seem to really go for is abuse. They seem to like EugeneD; suits their little masochistic souls to a tee to have Eugene dump on them.

  48. Buckie Boy says:

There weren’t enough pictures and too many big words for the Republicans.

    Linder = Ignorant liar

Maybe you don’t define green power the same way I do. Green power has to be renewable and non-polluting. Nuclear power plants are not renewable and are polluting.

    USPS/IRS Health Care
If health care is the problem, insurance is not the cause and government is not the answer.
    .
Of those “50 million,” that lack insurance there were 45,000 who died without health care.
    .
WITH health care, 98,000 died FROM health care because of malpractice.
    .
The question is do we want to trust that largest corporation in the world, the U.S. Government. Do not expect house calls anytime soon.
    .
We have seen how well the government delivers on its promises and its bureaucracies pursue the money without giving us benefits on so many levels.
    .
Imagine another 111 bureacracies that only ultimately must listen to the Secretary of the Treasury – another “service” of which is the IRS.

If you cannot use the link, google “Progressive Capitalist H.R. 3962.”
    .
If you believe the promises of this bill, you have to deal with the lie that it fosters competition with a government option called the “Public Option” and establishes the government as a monopoly making its own rules. Don’t worry. You’ll run out of “rich” soon enough.
    .
We have at least a $12 trillion economy of which at least $1.8 trillion is spent on health care.
    .
If you read the bill, there are plenty of opportunities to soak the middle class, if you do not mind the 1.6 million made jobless.

I do not know about Linder, but alas, I know far too much about Bachmann. She is a Republican ditz that our party could well do without. Amazing that she is in a constant dither about things and that she simply changes positions when called out about her inconsistency. Of course, perhaps Bachmann is truly not up to understanding a bill in the usual alloted time. I do not doubt the entire thing is too complicated for her to get in such a short time. However, She needs to whip up her reading skills a bit, maybe. OR, she is just blabbing so she can complain. Both ways, she looks grossly incompetent to me, a life long Republican.
