Michael Steele Takes On Palin, Limbaugh: ‘Your Opinion Really Doesn’t Matter Much’

RNC Chairman Michael Steele endorsed moderate Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava (R-NY) in the NY-23 special election before national conservative leaders — like Dick Armey, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin — forced Scozzafava out in favor of right-wing candidate Doug Hoffman. Following Hoffman’s defeat, Steele struck back at firebrands within his party, telling reporters earlier today that the opinion of conservative outsiders “really doesn’t matter much”:

STEELE: If you don’t live in the district, don’t vote there, your opinion really doesn’t matter much.

Later this afternoon, CNN host Wolf Blitzer asked Steele specifically about outsiders like Palin and Limbaugh, who loudly pushed the nominated Republican Scozzafava out of the race. Steele affirmed that he “hopes” those right-wing voices do not continue to meddle in Republican primaries:

BLITZER: Are you worried Mr. Chairman that Sarah Palin for example, or Rush Limbaugh or others in the conservative movement are going to go into some of these contests and go after the more moderate Republicans who might actually have a better chance at winning in the general election.

STEELE: Well, I hope not. [...] So I’m hoping not, and that’s not in their nature.

Watch it:

Of course, right-wing leaders are actually emboldened by their successful purging of Scozzafava, even despite the results of the election yesterday. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) is actively backing Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, a friend of the anti-Obama tea party movement, against more moderate Carly Fiorina in the California Senate race. DeMint explained that DeVore will “stand against his own party leaders” and that conservatives need to continue to “shake up the Republican Party.”

You can tell Tuesday night was a big loss for Democrats by the way the Republicans are blaming each other for the results.

STEELE: If you don’t live in the district, don’t vote there, your opinion really doesn’t matter much.

Well apparently you’re wrong about that. Their opinion mattered enough to shit-can a moderate candidate who actually lived in the district and cost you guys what had been a safe seat for over a century.

  3. barfly says:

and that conservatives need to continue to “shake up the Republican Party.”

Any more shaking, and all that will be left is the janitor.

Keep shaking up that repug party Mike.

    Mr. Steele,
I beg to differ. The proof is in the pudding. Their opinions matter a whole lot. Look at NY-23.

“STEELE: If you don’t live in the district, don’t vote there, your opinion really doesn’t matter much.”
That didn’t stop 95% of Hoffman’s money from coming from outside the district

Good work, Comarades DeMint, Palin, and Blimpo – and an honorable mention for you, Commissar Glendabeck.

Yes, the Republipimp Party MUST be purged of all moderate and pragmatic elements before the 2012 election; the Graft-ridden Obfuscating Paranoids MUST become the choice of conspiracy freaks worldwide whilst being completely unacceptable to anyone found in a voting booth in a rational state of mind.

  20. missmolly says:

These opinions of these conservative mouthpieces SHOULDN’T matter much when it comes to a district that isn’t theirs. Ideally, the only opinions that should matter are those of the voters in that district.

But, apparently, the opinions of the talking wingnuts DO matter, whether they should or not. But only because they are listened to do they have an impact. And it’s obvious that in this district, there are a lot of Republicans who look toward Limbaugh, Palin, Beck, etc. to find out what they should think and how they should vote.

Steele has his work cut out for him if he wants to make them irrelevant.

And when Steele says it’s “not in their nature” to interfere in local elections and purge moderate candidates in favor of their preferred extremists, I beg to differ. That’s EXACTLY their nature.

TWO guaranteed districts lost in one state in exactly one year!.

It’s Steele’s job to help candidates get elected/re-elected.
Steele was in charge of the Republican candidate in NY-20,and lost the guaranteed win. (70,000 registered Republican majority)

Steele’s candidate was usurped by the Teabaggers in NY-23, and together they lost another guaranteed win. (40,000 registered Republican majority)

The Teabaggers are taking over; the GOP is seriously split, it’s ‘leaders’ are just media gasbags with no political or practical qualifications, the teabag base is incoherent and can’t organize itself without the welfare of FreedomWorks and FOX, Steele is a bigger joke than he was last year.

The Republican financiers (like Koch for example) are going to get stuck paying for lunatic idiot candidates like Hoffman, Palin, and/or the current cretinous GOPers still hanging on to their seats.
They’ll be lucky if they can hold on to some of those incumbents, and those incumbents may well be obliged to pander to the teabaggers to keep their seats.

Conservative Democrats are at risk in 2010, but more from new Progressive Democratic candidates than from Republicans.
The Teabaggers are starting to tear the GOP apart.

    conservative guy

We did it to ourselves, thank you very much. We’re the ones insinuating that if Virginia elects a governor for the ninth time in a row opposite the party in the WH, the dems should fear for their lives. If we’re the party of local control, local governance, local issues, why are we insisting last night’s gubernatorial races are a federal referendum? Exit polling had only 25% of CONSERVATIVES voting for McDonnell as a rejection of Obama.

By the way, we lost both federal elections. We won’t be forcing Obami’s hand anytime soon.

  56. P.D. says:

  61. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

The voters rejected far-right conservatism last night.

    Wait – they’re sending a message!

If heard right, they want us to be far-rad-right, truly true to the core, hardcore.

They want a guy named Vicious Meat to run in the next election and make a full-grown lion his chief of staff, and to install a shark tank in his congressional office.

Poor people will be taxed and jailed.

If you cannot afford an attorney, a loan shark will be provided to you at no cost a 400% consultation fee.

Not only that, the Dems knew that Corzine was hugely unpopular and Deeds ran an awful campaign. The fact that the GOP is screaming how great this is, is very short sighted. Although, I bet the NY race gave the GOPers a pause. The districr in NY was in GOP hands for more than a century. Way to go Palin and Armey!

I don’t fell all that bad about last night. A little history lesson puts it in perspevtive.
In the off year election cycle, NJ, and Va. go opposite the party in power (holding the WH) on a fairly consistent bassis. Besides that, Deeds ran one of the worst campaigns I’ve ever seen and Corzine is almost universally disliked around the state of NJ. That said, if I was a member of the GOP, I would be VERY concerned about what happened in NY23 and in CA.
In my mind, that was the “litmus test” last night and the GOP failed miserably.

    Hi WTG.

I’ve enjoyed many of your translations but they don’t always ’scan’ very well (for want of a better word) so the effect is sometimes diluted or lost in parts.

About 18 months ago (maybe more)I’d take the morning ThinkFast news summary post and re-write it as ‘SpinFast’, written from a Republican perspective.

It got a good response from the regulars here but after a couple of weeks it just got harder and harder to satirize the Republicans as they sunk increasingly into self-parody.

Making fun of people who would make fun of serious issues like rape and murder and war and torture became a sick joke. so I stopped doing it.

Like the GOP itself you may be looking at a dead-end with the schtick.

  80. Jane E. Schneider says:

  86. P.D. says:

One thing besides the Dems win in NY and CA has made me smile. CNN has finished last in the ratings war. Oh, you know Faux News won because the old geezers and racist losers flock to them. But MSNBC kicked CNN’s ass. Could it be a man named Lou Dobbs is a negative influence? Or the fact Jon Stewart skewers them on a weekly basis for their biased reporting? You know, the fact the Repugs numbers are never checked and the fact they ALWAYS cut off the Dems? It seems the ‘Most Trusted Name in News’ is as bad as ‘Fair and Balanced’

  87. 5th Estate says:

  88. Jim Wolf359 says:

A big part of Deed’s problem was that he gave the base nothing to get excited about. He ran as a Republican Light Candidate and as a result people stayed home. Those we’re the same people who came out in droves last year to vote for Obama. Why? Because he got them excited with the message of change, that a Progressive Agenda could win. He proved that we are, indeed, a center left leaning electorate. Any Democrat who believes otherwise and runs away from it is going to get whacked come election time.
Given the choice of voting for a faux republican or a real one, the voters in Va went with the genuine article.

An Italian court sentenced 23 former CIA agents to up to eight years in prison yesterday for their role in the abduction of an Egyptian terror suspect in the first trial relating to “extraordinary renditions”.

The Americans were all tried in absentia, but the verdicts were hailed by human rights campaigners as a victory that could open the way to further prosecutions. Two agents of the Italian military intelligence agency Sismi were sentenced to three years each.

One of the 23 Americans convicted today by an Italian court says the United States “broke the law” in the CIA kidnapping of a Muslim cleric Abu Omar in Milan in 2003.

“And we are paying for the mistakes right now, whoever authorized and approved this,” said former CIA officer Sabrina deSousa in an interview to be broadcast tonight on ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson.

DeSousa says the U.S. “abandoned and betrayed” her and the others who were put on trial for the kidnapping. She was sentenced in absentia to five years in prison.

Former UK ambassador: CIA sent people to be ‘raped with broken bottles’

    By Daniel Tencer
    Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

    http://rawstory.com/2009/11/ambassador-cia-people-tortured/

The CIA relied on intelligence based on torture in prisons in Uzbekistan, a place where widespread torture practices include raping suspects with broken bottles and boiling them alive, says a former British ambassador to the central Asian country.

Craig Murray, the rector of the University of Dundee in Scotland and until 2004 the UK’s ambassador to Uzbekistan, said the CIA not only relied on confessions gleaned through extreme torture, it sent terror war suspects to Uzbekistan as part of its extraordinary rendition program.

“I’m talking of people being raped with broken bottles,” he said at a lecture late last month that was re-broadcast by the Real News Network. “I’m talking of people having their children tortured in front of them until they sign a confession. I’m talking of people being boiled alive. And the intelligence from these torture sessions was being received by the CIA, and was being passed on.”

Human rights groups have long been raising the alarm about the legal system in Uzbekistan. In 2007, Human Rights Watch declared that torture is “endemic” to the country’s justice system.

Murray said he only realized after his stint as ambassador that the CIA was sending people to be tortured in Uzbekistan, country he describes as a “totalitarian” state that has never moved on from its communist era, when it was a part of the Soviet Union.

@ 63. What the GOP REALLY means … says: The voters rejected far-right conservatism last night. Wait – they’re sending a message! … If heard right, they want us to be far-rad-right, truly true to the core, hardcore. They want a guy named Vicious Meat to run in the next election and make a full-grown lion his chief of staff, and to install a shark tank in his congressional office. Poor people will be taxed and jailed. If you cannot afford an attorney, a loan shark will be provided to you at … a 400% consultation fee. November 4th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

And they are sending this message via? reMorse Code? Askey (heh snark)? Simple binary with hard dualism – no grey code in between the lines and everything in black and white? Inquiring minds want to know.

And a provisional loan shark. Damn, it don’t get much better than that…

AP sources: Dem Health bill to get AARP backing

By ERICA WERNER and RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a coup for House Democrats, AARP will endorse sweeping health care overhaul legislation headed for a history-making floor vote, officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

An endorsement from the seniors’ lobby was critical when then-President George W. Bush pushed the Medicare prescription drug benefit through a closely divided Congress in 2003. House Democratic leaders are hoping it will work the same political magic for them as they strive to deliver on President Barack Obama’s signature issue.

An announcement from the 40-million member group is expected Thursday, said officials with knowledge of the group’s decision. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the endorsement is not official yet.

Backing the 10-year, $1.2 trillion House bill is a tricky move for AARP. Many retirees are concerned about cuts in Medicare payments to medical providers, which will be used to finance an expansion of health insurance coverage to millions of working families who now lack it. Also, AARP says its membership is about evenly divided among Democrats, Republicans and independents, meaning its endorsement in today’s highly politicized atmosphere could anger many members.

    Dear FOXPRAVDA viewers…

The myth of Fox News’ ratings spike
    November 03, 2009 9:32 am ET
    http://mediamatters.org/columns/200911030004

Fact: The breathless claim that Fox News’ ratings recently spiked thanks to the White House’s public critique is bogus hype — hype that Fox News and the Beltway press have relentlessly pushed.

    It’s just not true.

No matter how many times reporters and pundits made the claim, a detailed analysis of Nielsen ratings numbers clearly indicates that in the two weeks after the White House in mid-October sparked a media controversy by claiming Rupert Murdoch’s channel was not a legitimate news organization, Fox News’ ratings did not soar or go “through the roof.” In fact, not only did Fox News’ overall ratings not soar, they experienced no significant increase at all. Instead, in the two weeks following the initial verbal jousts with the White House, Fox News’ total day ratings virtually flatlined.

What a mess these folks have gotten themselves in. I love it!

  113. Pennsylvanianne says:

Actually, Steele is right. Palin’s and Limbaugh’s endorsements meant nothing in the NY-23 race: Hoffman LOST! Capt. Owens is a retired Air Force captain and attorney whose devotion to the rule of law and Constitution of the United States are implied. Palin and Limbaugh couldn’t care less about the rule of law. It is good to see that Palin and Limbaugh have no magic endorsement powers. The more the extreme right tries to push out moderate Republicans, the smaller the tent and the more likely the party is to lose even more elections of national importance. And the NY-23 race is important, because it means an additional Democrat in Congress, from a district that hasn’t elected a Democrat IN A HUNDRED YEARS!!

  114. Mark701 says:

What we are witnessing are two different reactions to the GOP losing congress and the Presidency, entrenchment and moderation. The moderates are looking to make their policies more palatable to a larger portion of the population. The crazies are doubling down on failed ideas in the hopes that doing the same stupid things twice as hard will yield a different result.

  115. eyesopen says:

    Dear Steely Mike:
I was really impressed with the way you waxed ecstatic about that couple of gubernatorial seats your party picked up yesterday. I was further impressed by the relative value you placed on those seats compared to the value you assigned to those congressional seats that your party lost. You really don’t seem to have much use for seding anyone up to the Capitol.

With that in mind, I saw an opportunity for some good old fashioned horse trading. It seems that the leadership of the Democratic party may not be much interested in negotiating these matters, but as a member of the Democratic party, I’m happy to stand in for them.

Here’s the deal. I’ll give you two governorships that are currently held by Democrats in exchange for two Senate seats in which I can place liberal Democrats. You could get another week of crowing about the gubernatorial seats, and might even be able to get one or both to threaten secession. How can you resist an opportunity like that?

I recommend accepting this deal. After all, its not like the voters are going to be sending Republicans to Washington. There isn’t any point to it. The Republican party has already made it abundantly clear that they aren’t going to do a damned thing in Washington, and it just seems silly to send anyone there when all they have on their agenda is to do nothing. They can do that from at home in the district.
