Astroturf In Action: Right-Wing Billionaire David Koch Pays For 40 Buses To Haul In Protesters

Americans for Prosperity (AFP), the corporate front group founded in the 1980s by Koch Industries billionaire David Koch, worked closely with Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) to orchestrate the anti-health reform rally today. As ThinkProgress reported yesterday, AFP has been encouraging right-wing activists to board their buses — free of charge — to attend the rally. While AFP does not disclose all of its corporate donors, foundations controlled by David and Charles Koch provide millions in yearly funding, and David continues to chair the AFP foundation and preside over AFP’s annual convention.

ThinkProgress found at least a dozen AFP staffers standing at their designated bus drop off point near the Capitol, handing out signs, directions, talking points, petitions, and donuts to protesters. Many of the people who work at AFP are longtime Republican operatives, like Ben Marchi, the AFP Virginia director who previously worked for the National Republican Congressional Committee and for Rep. Tom Delay (R-TX). Victor Zapanta produced this video report of AFP staffers talking about their exploits at the rally today:

AFP STAFFERS: We have 25 buses just from Pennsylvania, New Jersey we probably have 5 or 6 from Maryland.

AFP STAFFERS: We have about 40 buses coming.

Watch it:

David Koch’s AFP has a long history of marshaling “grassroots” support for GOP objectives. In the early 1990s, AFP, then known as Citizens for a Sound Economy, worked secretly with then-Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-GA) to organize angry crowds following the Clintons as they touted their health reform bill. Industry money from health insurance, telecommunications, oil, and other companies has flowed freely to AFP over the years to help AFP promote an agenda of boosting the rich, stripping consumer safeguards, and maintaining corporate monopolies. Phillip Morris rented out AFP from the Koch family, contributing millions to the organization in exchange for AFP to build opposition to tobacco regulations.

AFP’s daily activities are managed by Tim Phillips, an infamous astroturf lobbyist who built a career using Christian front groups to wage stealth campaigns. For example, his work includes fighting under the radar to promote energy deregulation for Enron and helping Jack Abramoff clients continue forced abortion sweatshops in the Northern Mariana Islands.

Will the media report on the true driver of today’s rally? Or will they leave David Koch out of the equation, despite his hand-in-glove involvement.

Update This afternoon on the House GOP's live webcast, Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH) praised the anti-health reform protesters for arriving to the Capitol without any assistance paying for the buses. He also said no central organization was orchestrating the effort:

LATTA: Some stakes took over 20 buses [...] You know, they're not rabble-rousers.

KINGSTON: Who paid for them?

LATTA: They all paid for themselves. You know, these people came down on their own.

Take a good look at the people in this Protest and you’ll see the weakest Americans. Just think this is an example of how low we’ve dropped as these folks listen to Representives mislead and lie. Each one of these people will use and benefit from the Obama/Biden Health Care Plan and as true Americans they will forget all this and some will deny they were ever in Washingtion DC. As for the Law Makers they will laugh if their plan works because they have full coverage and no pre conditions.

    Americans for Prosperity

Isn’t that like human beings for oxygen

Everyone wants to be prosperous . .

But good for the RWers, they had a lovely “comped’ day in D.C. and they got to pray together; good for them!

  5. LibertyLover says:

These people belong to the “Will vote against their own best interest in exchange for a bus trip and a donut Party”

What is the opposite of a Government Control?

    Corporate control.

You think that corporations like Koch’s are going to care about YOUR health? Are they going to take care of you when YOU get cancer? Pay for YOUR medicines?

    I think not.

What is wrong with an option? It is only a choice…and we will all benefit.

  6. Purple State says:

    So let’s do some math.

    40 buses x ( ) per bus = ?

We can use this as the first step towards actual crowd size for this “protest”.

The only thing they respect is their money. They pay lip service to patriotism.

    MR. SOROS,

Where are the buses. Do not let the right wing bat-sh*t crazy, tea baggers get away with this. Protest THEM at every turn. They aren’t worried about a government takeover, they are worried that progressives might upset their status-quo. They LOVE the status-quo. Its feels safe and ya don’t have to think.

    OT on Fort Hood;

I;m just waiting for the usual suspects to explain how, if only the all the soldiers at Fort Hood had weapons, this miss shooting would have been over in no time–you know, like they suggested about Virginia Tech?.

On the ‘Dick Army’ buses, I just looked up the price of a charter in NJ. For a whole day its about $850–$1,000.
So approx $36-40,000 for buses just handed to American parrots.

  16. LibertyLover says:

    Purple State says:

Assuming (ahem) that each bus holds 50 to 75 people per bus, that would be 2000 to 3000 people at the “rally” — sound about right?

  17. P.D. says:

Are these people so stupid they don’t realize they are being used by a rich A-hole? Did they even ask WHO provides the buses? Don’t they realize they are the biggest chumps in the world? Do they even know about Fort Hood? My God, Are they inbred or what? My father said intelligence is a gift, Man was he right.

  18. 5th Estate says:

    So let’s do some math.

    40 x 47 per bus = 1,880

  19. Wayne A. Schneider says:

For example, his work includes fighting under the radar to promote energy deregulation for Enron and helping Jack Abramoff clients continue forced abortion sweatshops in the Northern Mariana Islands.

Tom DeLay helped with that one, too (Marianas Islands sweat/sex shops.) While he was Majority Whip, he promised one of the sweat shop owners that because he controlled which bills would be voted on in the House, the one that would have made the Marianas Islands subject to US Labor law “will never see the light of day.” It never did while the Republicans controlled things.

Perhaps this is one which the Democrats should be able to easily pass. Make the Republicans defend sex slaves and sweat shops.

apparently, the purchasing of these fools is cheap…a bus ride to d.c and a donut

  23. P.D. says:

Well, at least MSM isn’t focused on the ‘Loon Parade’. In fact, MSM shouldn’t have spent any time on these jack asses at all. After all, remember the Protests during the Iraq War? MSM barely covered it. But a bunch of whack-jobs get A-list coverage. Sigh.

  24. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Were the free bus rides a gift? Or do those people have to pay taxes on that “free” bus ride?

  25. Shayne says:

5th Estate, I was just thinking of the exact same incident at Virginia Tech and how they said lives would have been saved if students had guns. If soldiers couldn’t stop the shooter before 12 were killed how would students?

  26. 5th Estate says:

    LibertyLover says:

75 a bus? NO way. 47 is typical for a standard charter.

  27. Virtual Pebble says:

When it comes to people like David Koch, the MSM reporters see no weasels. They’re not paid to do anything other than report what is directly under their nose. They’re informed from the beginning of their employment that no investigations are necessary.

Please ignore the wizard behind the curtain.

  28. Shayne says:

The old coots that ended up at the rally probably didn’t even know where they were going. They were probably told they had a free bus ride to the bingo parlor or casino and they couldn’t wait to hop on.

All these retirees complain about fixed incomes and are worried about their Medicare fill up the gambling institutions and buy lottery tickets more than anybody every day.

  29. missmolly says:

Waitaminnit — if George Soros paid for 40 buses to create a “crowd” for a protest, it would be all over the wingnut blogosphere, hurling his name like it was some kind of slur.

So I’m to understand it’s OK for the rabid right to have a billionaire, and it’s not OK for progressives to have one?

  30. LibertyLover says:

    5th Estate says:
    LibertyLover says:

75 a bus? NO way. 47 is typical for a standard charter.

I figured 50 at about average, but I didn’t know for sure… when in doubt, I use a range of minimum/maximum…

But even at 50 people ( or 47) with 4 people across, that only leaves 12 rows of seats… seems like there have been more than that on the charters that I have been on…

  31. Hoodathunk says:

So all it costs to give Faux a woody is a handful of buses and some donuts?

  32. blue53 says:

Why are these organizations tax exempt? Millions of dollars from Koch, Murdoch, and the corporate rapists goes right in the tills of these bums to work for the rich against the rest of us. These “tea baggers” are tools of these corportions. You wonder if they have the common sense to realize their ride today comes from companies that get tax break after tax break, know every tax loophole, have their money offshore, and take our jobs offshore. The patriotism of these corporate men, their famlilies, and anyone who supports them is to be questioned every second of every day. As for the employees of Kock industies–how do you sleep at night, knowing that you work for this scum.

“Are the elections of 2009 precursors of the same kind of massive partisan upheaval in Congress that we experienced in 1994? The historical data says yes, they are.”
    – Not even close. What did the Republicans gain on Tuesday? A couple of gubernatorial contests where the Democrat was a weak candidate. In the meantime, the Democrats won both of the special election Congressional seats — stealing one from the GOP. You seem to be confusing “historical data” (which you don’t elaborate on) with your own delusions.

“Also, didn’t acorn bus thousands of people to voting booths? Hypocrite much?”
    – Again, not the same thing. Busing people to the polls is something many organizations do on Election Day, which is a valuable service to those who otherwise have no transportation. And there is no litmus test as to who gets transported — nobody is asked who they intend to vote for. Furthermore, driving people to the polls isn’t done in secret, and nobody lies about it. You don’t see propagandists saying, “They all paid for themselves. These people came down on their own” when ACORN or anybody else provides busing service.

But it appears you’re running on empty and you’re down to your last chew toy. It wouldn’t be fair to take that away from you, so do blither on. Just pardon me if I ignore you.

Depends on the bus, but for round numbers, I’d actually go with 40 (and I work with buses). I’d really like to know more about how they got anyone onboard at all. Did they advertise locally about where people should meet the buses? Did they simply pay everyone $20 to wave a sign? Did they just drive out to the trailer park and load up with people without jobs?

Virtually all the media refer vaguely to “thousands” and the only firm number I’ve found was “said to be 10,000″.

  63. Purple State says:

Okay, so a ceiling of 2400? I’;m assuming not every one of the buses was full, so maybe 2200?

  72. WaltTheMan says:

Let’s be charitable and say that 6000 showed up. That would be 140 per bus, if you allow for 400 on the platform from the politically elite (It looked more like about 160 – 240.) That would require that about 1500 or more seniors ride standing for 4-7 hours on the trip from NC on 25 buses. It would also cause an ecological disaster as bus holding tanks are only good for about 16-24 gallons. Is I95 in VA browntop yet?

  107. Purple State says:

    Olby Sucks, question:

Do you know he’s a Muslim?

Do you know if his partner was a Muslim?

    Do you know ANYTHING?

  108. Xisithrus says:

    Where was he born Hyperflatulation?

  109. Xisithrus says:

Hyperinflation says: crickets from the cowards….

Your grasping at straws – as always.

  110. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    crickets from the cowards….

Since you have refused to directly answer my questions in full, I would say you should count yourself among the cowards.

OTOH, maybe they’re ignoring you because you’re such an a-hole.

  111. Xisithrus says:

The spokesman, Lt. Col.Nathan Banks, said two shooters were apparently involved. There is no word yet on who they were, nor on identities of the dead, The Associated Press reported.

Banks says the second incident took place at a theater on the sprawling base.

He says it is too soon to tell whether there is any link to battle stress or repeated deployments. The Army is suffering a record high suicide rate and other signs of stress from fighting two wars.

Record high suicide rates. Thanks Dubbeh and Dickey

  112. Xisithrus says:

Doesn’t matter where he was born. He WAS a muslim terrorist.

You have no proof of anything at this time and are engaging in speculation. He committed murder but dont yet know why.

  113. gummitch says:

Lt Gen. “Cone did not speculate about a motive, but the Army released a statement saying it did not believe the shootings were an act of political terrorism.”

    From the Houston Chronicle

Killeen depends on the base for its economic survival. It’s a city where everyone seems in some way associated with the Army.

Though he had not yet learned the identity of the suspects, Killeen bicycle shop worker Wes Neveu said the shooting didn’t surprise him — not when soldiers are constantly coming in and out of combat.

“Cmon, you send these guys over there, for 13, 16 months, you let them come home for three months, six months, and send them right back,” said Neveu, a veteran himself, who survived a shooting in a mess hall while he was stationed in Germany years ago. “For the past two or three years, all these guys have known is getting shot at or shooting other people.”

    Pinto agreed.

“They’re not getting enough counseling. They’re just throwing them back into society, and I don’t think they’re getting all the help they need. Then they wait six months, and they send him back again,” Pinto said. “I think it’s just too much, too much for the families, too much for the soldiers.”

  114. Xisithrus says:

Another shooting occurred at the post Sept. 8, 2008.

In that incident, Spc. Jody Michael Wirawan, 22, of Eagle River, Ala., who was scheduled to soon be discharged, fatally shot 1st Lt. Robert Bartlett Fletcher, 24, of Jensen Beach, Fla. When Killeen police arrived, they fired shots at Wirawan. He responded by shooting himself, Fort Hood officials told The Associated Press at the time.

Guess that was a terrorists as well, Hyperflatulation?

  115. Leftside Annie says:

Good grief, these people are just …embarrassing!!!!

  117. lcdrrek says:

From the pictures I have seen and the estimate of:

“G. Gordon Liddy’s producer claims around ‘a million’ attended the GOP’s anti-health care reform rally.”

They must have packed those buses. Can’t imagine what “a million” wingnuts must smell like. I know the combined IQ must have been approaching 50.

If we remove those wingnuts >65 on Medicare then there would be far fewer.

  118. PissedOffByTheLies says:

I am amazed that a certain individual is still here only trying to stir up sh!t rather than engage in intelligent discourse. I have no problems with differing views; just present yourself in an intelligent, civil manner and give me something to really “think” about rather than useless drivel.

  119. dbadass says:

    Hi Hyperinflation
I am back. Are you still a petrified pussy?

  120. dbadass says:

Wanna discuss that? You are so outleagued…

  121. dbadass says:

If you weren’t such a f ucked up loser you would know that in fact I drove across state lines to pick up my paycheck f4rom my night job and let them know that I wasn’t going to work tonight. Does it suck to be wrong so often?

  122. dbadass says:

    Rinse, repeat….yawn…..

    — Sure that would explain why despite your many names you can’t bring yourself to engage in a simply dialogue. You fear is known by all. I can toy with you all I want because you are helpless to stop it…. Sucks to be you…

  127. dbadass says:

Let’s go lame ass. Get some nerve and have a conversation rather than a bunch of bulklshit cry for attention posts. I don’t give a shit whether you wanna by Olby Sucks or Hyperinflation or any of the many others. What I care about is helping you learn to be a man.

  128. just the bleepn facts says:

  131. dbadass says:

Notice as always when the subject becomes unnerved they flail about in an uncoordinated manner akin to a spastic pussy pos socially alienated loser too petrified to engage in a focused discussion… Everywhere you go there I am loser. Wanna know how to make it stop?

  132. dbadass says:

That’s right sissy you have the power to make it stop. What you lack is the nerve. You are weak, embarassing, and shameful. I feel for your kin.

  133. dbadass says:

Oh I am at -1 how troubling? Face it dipshit. You can’t win this. Why not just change names yet again. Won’t matter. I will just humiliate you some more. Grow a pair and stand up and defend yourself like a normal person…

  134. dbadass says:

This has nothing to do with stalking. This is about encouraging you to stop being a dipshit and grow up and have adult discussions about topics. You have been coming here for so long with no principles or values but just a desire to get attention and be a jackass. Explain to me why that is? What is your goal and why do you choose to do this? You hide what you spend your days doing from your family don’t you? You know it is messed up and abnormal don’t you?

  135. dbadass says:

I need to drop off some dvds and pick up some file’ powder. When I get back here I had better find you gone or find you actually posting intelligent discussion based ideas. See the thing is that inteeligent well articulated opposing views are welcome here. What you do isn’t that. Which is why I am forced to do the thing I do best. What do you say do you want a seat at the adult table?

  136. dasm says:

Just more proof the GOP & right-wingers have to BUY their supporters. Pathetic.

  137. dbadass says:

    Thanks, patsy!

Why does vermont love ‘em some child predators?

What the hell are you talking about and how would I know? Are you mistaking me with someone else?

  138. dbadass says:

Remember my little friend you have the power to make it stop. You only need to become a big enough person to effect that change. Till then I will continue to own you and it will continue to eat away at you since you remain utterly helpless and defenseless…

  139. dbadass says:

It pisses you off yet you have no capacity to solve your problem. You so want to cling to your bullshit need for negative attention that you can find yourself out of the paperbag I have placed you in. So tell us why do you come here? What is it that you are seeking? What is it you hope to gain?

  140. dbadass says:

can = can’t. Either way you remain my toy and I can and will do whatever I wish with you and you won’t do shit about it. Mommy must be so proud of you….

You acting like a 3rd reich brown shirt after the gypsies and jews is predictable for a nationalist fascist though patsy! LOL! ;)

  144. Tim43 says:

What do you socialist marxists have against free Americans who protest out of control government and high taxes?

I can tell who’s side you all would have been on in 1776. Er’ wait, I forgot, you actually have to pay taxes to really understand what is wrong with the current administration who, incidentally, has outspent Bush 4 to 1 and enslaved future generations with trillions in debt.

You all must either still be in community college or you are receiving free handouts from George *Schwarts” Soros the x-Nazi sympathizer. To say that you understand economic freedom would be like saying obama knows how to run a business.

  145. dbadass says:

    That was sort of kooky…

    Tim43 says:
I can tell who’s side you all would have been on in 1776.

LOL! You could, but we “both” know you’d be wrong! In 1776 they were demonstrating for the right to democracy, you teabagger nutjobs are protesting to “overthrow” democracy like a good little redcoat d*uchebag.

    Tim43 says:
Er’ wait, I forgot, you actually have to pay taxes to really understand what is wrong with the current administration who, incidentally, has outspent Bush 4 to 1 and enslaved future generations with trillions in debt.

Is that why we “blue states” subsidize you inbred rubes with our “taxes”? Outspent Bush 4 to 1? LOL! You are a complete retard? For that to be possible the “budget” would need to be 12 Billion dollars for 2009! What an ignorant lying fool you are “timmeh” the inbred!

    Tim43 says:
You all must either still be in community college or you are receiving free handouts from George *Schwarts” Soros the x-Nazi sympathizer. To say that you understand economic freedom would be like saying obama knows how to run a business.

Says the moron that can’t do simple arithmetic! As for your anti-semitism against Soros – puhlease! Could you be any more stupid? Don’t think so, that’s you you don’t believe we have the “freedom” to “democracy” and it’s “consequences”. Hitler didn’t trust “democracy” either – just like you and your anti-democratic unpatriotic teabagging terrorist buddies!

You couldn’t care less about the nine people that were murdered? Classy!

Look in the mirror and see who is the one politicizing their deaths on a partisan website to score political points…

  148. USCKitty says:

Wait, I thought you guys accused Soros of funding everything from anti-war protests to the daily gay sex Bacchanalias that TEH HOMO AGENDA is working on…

    Oh I forgot, IOKIYAR…

You can’t deny that corporate America is funding these so-called grassroots marches. These aren’t grassroots Tim, but rather astroturf. Unfortunately for you, you’re also a corporate pawn, a slave to corporate America who lets the deluded masses do their dirty work for them…just look at the front groups handing out signs that these protesters probably didn’t spend minutes reflecting on.

  149. Chicano2nd says:

LATTA: They all paid for themselves. You know, these people came down on their own

Ya know, you are an f’n liar. I bet you’re damn proud of that distinction too!

    Timmeh

You are a liar a punk and a moron. We already KNEW how stupid and pathetic you were so stopping by to spew a few lies and show once again how pitfully stupid you are really served no purpose. Just STFU. The adults are talking and you are FAR too stupid to contribute

  152. EugeneDebs says:

  154. Rodeskawler says:

Only in America do you see people fighting for the right of for-profit healthcare corporation ceos to bankrupt them.

    Ignorance abounds.

  155. linzloo08 says:

Do these people even realize that they are ’slaves’ to the corporations or do they know this but are they too proud to admit it?

  156. linzloo08 says:

Thrse idiots can’t even think for themselves! Sheesh, my parents and my younger sister would probably be at the head of the crowd if they didnt have to go to school or work, and I’d probably be right there with them holding a sign FOR healthcare reform. But, unfortunately, I was in class all day yesterday, so I couldn’t go and make fun of them.
