Obama: It’s difficult enough to lose soldiers overseas, ‘horrifying’ to see their lives taken on U.S. Army base.

A shooting at the Ft. Hood Army Base in Texas earlier this afternoon has claimed the lives of 12 people and wounded at least 31 others. The suspected gunman — Major Nidal Malik Hasanwas shot to death is alive and in stable condition, while “two other soldiers were in custody.” President Obama called the Fort Hood shootings a “horrific outburst of violence.” “It is difficult enough to lose” soldiers overseas, he said, but it is “horrifying that they should lose their lives at an Army base in the U.S.” (Watch his remarks here.)

Update On Fox News, Shep Smith reported that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) and others told him that the officer was “very upset” about a “pending deployment to the war zones in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.” A Hutchison spokesman tells a Texas newspaper the same thing.
Update Politico reports, "Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison told Fox News she had learned the dead shooter was scheduled for deployment to Iraq, and 'I think that there was some measure of being upset about that.'"
Update ABC News' Brian Ross described Major Malik Nidal Hassan as a convert to Islam. Contrary to prior reports, Hasan has "always been Muslim" and is not a recent convert. In a statement, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said:

We condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms possible and ask that the perpetrators be punished to the full extent of the law. No religious or political ideology could ever justify or excuse such wanton and indiscriminate violence. The attack was particularly heinous in that it targeted the all-volunteer army that protects our nation. American Muslims stand with our fellow citizens in offering both prayers for the victims and sincere condolences to the families of those killed or injured.

My sympathy to the loved ones of those lost in this senseless act of violence. I hope that the wounded recover. Ft. Hood may be the largest Army base in the U.S., but it’s also a community, and this has got to affect the people who work there deeply.

Men become soldiers knowing that facing death is a part of the job. I don’t think they expect to find it on their home base, however. I hope that the wounded and grieving find healing, and that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Just STFU. Not everybody exploits a tragedy to benefit their agenda of bigotry. We don’t know yet what the motive was for the shooting. So can we now just be concerned for the injured and the families of the dead until we get more information?

  10. P.D. says:

Does anyone know if it was just soldiers or civilians? My God, This is just so upsetting. They are in my prayers.

  11. missmolly says:

I remember when a crazed gunman opened fire at Virginia Tech and killed a lot of people. The wingnuts claimed that tragedy could have been avoided if the Virginia Tech students were armed to the teeth.

At Fort Hood, people have guns. Some of the dead were SWAT team members. How, pray tell, do the gun nuts think this could have been avoided with more firepower?

  12. Wayne A. Schneider says:

P.D. I believe all of the dead and wounded were soldiers.

  13. RUCerious says:

And here’s another heartbreaking story of an ex-soldier back from his third tour of Iraq getting shot by police during a violent incident involving domestic violence.
Not condoning the violence, but this guy was seriously screwed up.

    Thanks, Bush.
Lake Stevens man killed by police was Iraq veteran

  14. Marie says:

P.D. I think they were all soldiers, except for one civilian policeman. The general reported that they have their own MPs and employ contract police as well.

  15. Zooey says:

    PD,

Apparently this took place in a readiness area of the base, where soldiers were taking care of last minute things before deploying overseas.

  16. Badmoodman says:

The suspected gunman — Major Malik Nadal Hasan — was shot to death

    – - Oh geeze, the wingnuts will have a field day linking the President’s name with this guy’s.

  17. Marie says:

    Missmolly,
I absolutely forgot about that – thanks for the reminder. I do recall the number of people who said all faculty and students should be armed.
This was certainly proof that weapons for everyone would not be a deterrent – and the proponents of that asinine suggestion would have armed inexperienced and untrained individuals, who would be reacting to an incident.

  18. Marie says:

    badmoonman,
    my thoughts too.

  19. theladyorthetiger says:

Another part of the insanity of war. Peace to the families of all those dead and wounded (both physically and emotionally).

  20. Marie says:

Imagine the feeling of other soldiers who will be worried now if their fellow soldier might attack them.
The Pentagon is more worried about gays in the military!

  21. Jackie says:

Few really cared or even paid attention to the fact that our soldiers have come home with little medical care and no jobs. Yes we hear the ” We Support Our Troops” but it’s lip service. Few cared that over 8 years our troops got little supplies, no bullet proof vest, had to pay for their meals and cleaning, families living in the streets and so much more. Yes the Media gives one person or two that get help but the thousands are left out. This sitution would end quickly if President Obama open the draft and those who supporting the War had to see their love ones die based on Bush/Cheney’s lies. Look at the Protesters March Against Health Care today as they are more then willing to let our troops and their families have no Health Care. I pray Obama gives these soldiers real help and their families and not just continued lip service. I had to pay for my daughters bullet proof vest while she was sent to combat and not one Law Maker cared as other Military Families had to do the same.

  22. wiley says:

The suicide rate for the army just surpassed that of the civilian population. These multiple deployments to combat zones are not the norm, though it seems to be taken for granted as such. Rather than have the draft, I’d rather we just pulled out and resolved to solve our problems by other means.

Or how about the warmongers and their families have to be drafted in the first round and cannot leave military service until the war is over. There will be less call for military intervention then.

  27. SP Biloxi says:

And Obama is right. This should be a clue to the lawmakers to those who are less concern on what is happening to the soldiers in this country in Afghanistan or the ones that are leaving to Afghanstan that are suffering from mental and emotional problem of dealing with this war. It is time to pull out of Afghanistan and let the Afghan government take care of their country. The suicide rate for the soldiers has increased more than ever. And that is why the passing the healthcare reform is important to the American people and the soldiers as the soldiers that are coming back from these two wars need medical help.

On a side note: If Obama suggest a draft, watch how many of the GOP lawmakers oppose it as the draft would include their children to go to Afghanistan or Iraq.

( i know.. here I am taking the word of FOX.. but the idea of him working in mental health seems credible because it’s nothing that fits into their type of spin)

If he worked in some degree in psychiatry.. then the most likely motive really would be stress.. that he truly just lost it.. but details are definitely sketchy at this point.

I can’t wait for the CAIR news conference condemning this outrage!

CAIR has issued a statement of condemnation. Was it everything you expected?

  116. dbadass says:

So Hyperinflation I was wondering. Do you feel greatful toward us when we give you the attention you so so need? I mean you must really feel strongly about how kind we are toward your needs… Can we talk about that?

  117. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Hyperinflation says:

We are at war with muslim’s in case you forgot.

After learning what I have today about the futility of presenting those who will not see the truth that contradicts what they firmly believe, a decent amount of respect demands that I make at least one attempt.

We are not at war with Islam. (Or Muslims, if you prefer.)

We have deployed our troops in Afghanistan (originally) to fight against those who orchestrated the attacks of 9/11, based on the erroneous belief that this is where they were. Then, our then-Commander-in-Chief illegally diverted funds that Congress had authorized for fighting in Afghanistan to begin the eventual invasion of Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. (Another fact of which some people refuse to be convinced, according to that same study I read about.)

We were not fighting a religion, we were fighting people who committed horrific crimes against us. I personally believe that fighting them through the use of overwhelming military force is a doomed strategy, but I do not command our troops. There have been many mass murderers throughout history who were not Muslim, but their have been far, far too many murdered in the name of a religion. That does not mean that all people who practice that religion are potential enemies. Just the ones who would use their religion as an excuse to use violence to resolve their disputes. No matter what that religion was.

  118. Wayne A. Schneider says:

And thanks, dbadass. Keep up the great work. I’m enjoying it. I vote you up whenever I see you engage one in conversation.

  119. Wayne A. Schneider says:

9/11 ring any bells? They were muslims.

They were also men. Are we at war with all the men in the world?

What a stupid reason. Try again.

  120. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I have to go to bed now. Good night, everyone.

dbadass, he’s all yours. Have a good time. :)

  121. dbadass says:

    Take care Wayne.
I don’t know what it is but they seem to be willing to talk to everyone but me. I wonder why that is….

  122. dbadass says:

And what is the topic? Is it the one where you explain why you just drop by to beg for negative attention by posting random flame bs? If it isn’t please tell me what the topic is and we can discuss it. K?

  123. dbadass says:

Remember you have the power. Now see if you can find the nerve…

  124. dbadass says:

The topic is muslim terrorists killing here in America.

    – Okay so would you like to present your thesis relative to the topic?

  125. dbadass says:

No you just chose to ignore it. Mine was the one about the possibility that you might be insincere. Since I was gracious enough to allow you the choice of topic I just sort of assumed you had an opinion as to muslim terrorists killing here in America. Is it safe to assume your thesis is….

muslim terrorists killing here in America = bad

  126. dbadass says:

I can’t explain to you anyone killing anyone as a good thing. You seem to harbor inner turmoil.

  127. ncbrickhome says:

    Hyperinflation says:

    Fory Dix 6? muslims.

The potential terrorists in new york being held right now? muslims.

    Next.

George Bush’s Saudi buddies that FINANCED the Al Queda TERRORISTS.

    Muslims.

    Next.

  128. ncbrickhome says:

    Hyperinflation says:

muslim terrorists killing here in America = bad

You seemed to be disagreeing with this. Nuff said. Now, I’m done w/you because my massage therapist will be here soon and I need to get ready. ;)

George Bush’s buddies FINANCED the Al Queda TERRORISTS who did 9/11.

I hope you end up for ETERNITY with Bush, the Cheneys and TRAITOR Ronnie Reagan, along with their MASTER Satan.

Now, I’M done with YOU, TRAITOR.

  129. ncbrickhome says:

Turns out that he was HARRASSED by other soldiers for being Muslim.

If he got any of THEM, I’d say they got what they ASKED FOR.

  130. ncbrickhome says:

    BURN for ETERNITY, TRAITOR Ronnie…

  131. ncbrickhome says:

    Hyperinflation says:

    Yep, you’re a progressive!

    Yup, YOU’RE a supporter of Bush’s TREASON, including 9/11…

  132. Keith says:

    Hyperventilate,

Isn’t it true that none of the 9/11 hijackers were Iraqi, Afghan, or Iranian? We are not at war with 1.3 Billion Muslims. You certainly do not know it was premeditated.
We are not at war with Pakistan. They have nuclear weapons. That’s where al Qaeda are. They financed 9/11.
