Right-wing protesters at GOP rally display prominent sign tying health care to the Holocaust.

ThinkProgress’ Lee Fang snapped this photograph of a prominent sign being displayed at today’s GOP anti-health care rally. It’s unclear whether this sign is one of the many being handed out by Americans for Prosperity, the corporate front group sponsoring today’s rally. The sign reads “National Socialist Health Care: Dachau, Germany – 1945”:

holocaust1

Matt Yglesias observes, “There are all kinds of nutty people in the world, but these kinds of things are the wages of a conservative leadership and media that’s consistently tried to drum-up opposition to health care reform not by opposing things that are actually in the bill, but with demagogic opposition to completely fabricated provisions.”

So Doug Hoffman has quit politics to become a sign maker. Interesting career choice.

Yes, the astroturf handlers are demagogs but the fact remains that some feeble minded individual who probably couldn’t find Germany on a map and who probably could not tell you who fought with the allies in the second world war had no problem waving that sign. On one level I am fine with this because that kind of sign exposes the opposition as fools. On the other hand, the fact that these weak-willed sheep live among us makes you recognize how easy it is for the demagogs to attract followers.

Enough already with this dangerous rhetoric! Talk about invoking fear. Beck is still using 9/11 to invoke fear over healthcare reform, and now this!
Basically, old white people, all on medicare no doubt, being bussed into our nations capital to claim their freedom is being denied. These are a shameless bunch of old white bigots! How horribly clueless, shameful, and frightening

  25. pbeeg says:

these people are simply in the bubble. Their only real message has been and continues to be “We hate liberals.”
They have no idea how to deal with the health care crisis. Their own situations may be precarious, and if they get sick, it may ruin them. They might be on Social Security and Medicare.
    None of that matters.
Liberals are in charge (by their lights) and they hate liberals. It’s the only thing that drives them. Their own can screw them six ways from Sunday (and they have) and they’ll smile and cheer. Liberals may save the economy, the country, and their own sorry keisters, and they’ll hate them for it.

Well, the people who have jobs, and subsequently health care through those jobs, cannot take the time off to protest because they need their jobs and cannot leave their jobs on a whim to parade around the Capitol on their own dime.

And since Corporate sponsorship (Dick Armey’s Freedomworks Organization is picking up the tab and busing people in) has allowed these people to transport themselves to DC for a little fun at little or not cost to themselves, I can’t see that the two situations are equivalent.

Most of the rest of us are calling our Senators and Representatives, though, to get this thing done even for those people on the Capitol Steps that don’t even know what they are protesting.

From the NY Times story about Crazy Shelly’s little shin-dig (re-posted from the Think Fast thread):

Many of the demonstrators, like Judith Garloch of Newark, Ohio, said they were opposed to an increasing government role in the health care. Many said they feared cuts to the Medicare program for Americans 65 and over. Many described themselves as conservative and opposed to higher taxes.

“We support our country and we’re patriots,” Ms. Garloch said. “And I don’t want my health care to be changed.”

Ms. Garloch, who has a combination of Medicare and private coverage, said insurance should be sold across state lines to increase competition.

But Ms. Garloch, like many in the crowd who while visibly angry. could not articulate the main problems in the health care system or how they should be solved.

Some of the same people warning of too much government spending also complained that Medicare does not provide sufficient coverage.

aka, “Keep your government hands off my Medicare!!”

As a Texan, I would probably not even have access to a public option even if one passes, because I’m certain the state would opt out if given a choice.

Please keep the families of the shooting at Ft. Hood in your thoughts.

It’s called a “straw man”, and it’s the oldest political trick in the book. Here’s a DIY.

________________________________ (write in your target bill/candidate/program) will: (pick all that apply)
    a) destroy the country.
    b) kill old people.
    c) take all your money.
    d) take all your guns.
    e) take all your property.
    f) enslave your children.
    g) force you to worship ___________ (enter your least favorite object of worship).
    h) help the terrorists.
    etc.

This is beyond the pale. It’s because of these creeps that we aren’t able to accomplish anything meaningful in this country.

  121. kristenmchugh22 says:

This kind of xenophobic hyperbole is what the Nazis used to exploit the economic fears of post-WWI Germany. It’s the kind of fear-based, frenzied paranoia that allowed Hitler and the SS to implement the, “Final Solution.” Only now, it’s lobbyists and corporations exploiting the fearful and ill-informed. There’s a sort of repugnant and ironic symmetry to it. More than 10 Million Jews, Gypsies, Catholics, Homosexuals, Developmentally Challenged and other, “Undesirables,” were slaughtered in the Holocaust. Comparing a plan for health care reform to Dachau so morally abhorrent that I hope these SOBs keep doing it. It shows them for the venal muckrakers they are.

  123. Game of Life says:

    Here goes:

Ok, here is the levin story.

I was listening to him rattle on and on about typical repugs lies (long story to why I was listening to him) I believed it happened this week. It seemed he wasn’t getting any calls. Then a logical progressive was on the line and called him out on his lies. Of course levin when crazy.

I wish I had the feed. Anyway, levin ends the call and declares the caller a “real” “marxist” meaning President Obama and his administration aren’t really marxist. I mean he’s going off, it sounded like he was going to have a heart attack. He was having a cow. I thought this episode was weird.

In the matter of seconds, the nut talks to some one off mic and comes back on mic and tells his audience that a caller just killed his dog. levin’s voice is now dolorous and and his voice is decibels lower. It was so odd it seemed surreal. ( this story is better when the nut does it)

Then nuts got on air and was consoling levin, saying it wasn’t his fault, and it he shouldn’t feel sad, shet like that.

It was a matter of minutes he turned on hatred then sadness.
It was so fake it was unbelievable. The actual program reveled his nuttiness.

    CRAZY

  124. willpen says:

I grew up with too many people around me that lived with both the physical and mental scars of the Holocaust. I remember as a child asking my Mother why some of these people had numbers on their arms and all I got was a “shush” from her. As a child of the mid 50’s I grew up only slightly removed from these atrocities. Now, to see some vile people using these images to make a useless point, and simply to incite others to violence. makes me physically ill. God help us all. We are all going to hell…..

  125. richard729 says:

In a 2007 Supreme Court case, Morse v. Frederick, also known as Bong Hits 4 Jesus, five partisan, right-wing ideologues, Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia (RATS) + one so-called swing vote, Anthony Kennedy, ruled that student Frederick’s sign,
Bong Hits 4 Jesus, could cause “substantial disruption.”

Therefore, said the Roberts majority, Joseph Frederick’s free
speech should be suppressed. Though Frederick, a student at Juneau, Alaska Douglas High School, displayed the sign off campus on a public street the court concluded that he was engaged in student activity which allowed Morse, the school principal, to restrict Frederick’s free speech.

Contrast Bong Hits 4 Jesus with the recent assailing of President Barack Obama by the radical right-wing Republicans led by Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and others who are whipping up hatred and insurrection against our democracy and hoping to incite a “lone wolf” lunatic to assassinate Barack Obama.

Their messages of hate against Barack Obama hoisted by the apartheid element of the Republican Party in front of the Capitol today displayed the corpses of murdered Jews at Dachau concentration camp during World War 2, with a caption, “National Socialist Health Care: Dachau, Germany – 1945″ inferring that socialized health care will result in a similar holocaust against American citizens.

I ask you, if Bong Hits 4 Jesus causes “substantial disruption” then what do you call the Bachmann-led attempts to overthrow our government and our democratically-elected president? I call it substantially disruptive, treasonous and traitorous.

  126. flight says:

The most frightening aspect of the Dachau poster is the lack of any reverence concerning the atrocities.

    Where is our country headed?

So went you get around to actually being a human you then might make it closer enough to be able to say with any honesty that you are a american.

I’m American enough to at least be able to spell, and I think it would be really hard to “enplane” anything to you. Seriously, dude, the “X” and the “N” aren’t any where near each other.

    #130 Popatop,

If all you have is spelling errors to point out…
… Then you ain’t got much, do you?

    p.s.
Yes, the freedom to speak IS limited.
Try going into a crowded theatre and yelling FIRE!
The trampled bodies would be YOUR responsibility.
The Law is clear on that.
Not that you can’t say what ever you wish…
… It’s just the responsibility of consequences that you don’t agree with, is it?
What then is “PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY” anyway?
To you, it seems to be non-existent.

Freaking sickening. The worst teabagger sign by far. These people need to take a walk, if their sclerotic arteries allow (otherwise, use the communist Metro), down to the nearby Holocaust Museum and learn what Dacau was and what it stood for and why it should never be trivilized. Fricking reprehensible.

  133. PinUrT says:

#98 “At least these protesters acknowledged the Holocaust; I’ve met a few Holocaust-deniers…and they ain’t pretty; if you know what I mean…”

You’ve got to be kidding me. Exploitation of a horrific image of the piled bodies of victims of the Nazi camps to protest health care reform is not really “acknowledging” the Holocaust because it ignores how reprehensible the Holocaust was and uses this comparison so lightly, so thoughtlessly with not an ounce of recognition of how offensive and ignorant such an action is, and thus they really are no better than deniers.

Hear, hear to post #106. These teabaggers are so eager to paint themselves as helpless victims and martyrs on the same level with such folk which is shameful and then they add hypocrisy to it by screaming about personal responsibility and “rugged individualism” in their whiny protests.

  134. EdgeOnIt says:

The dearth of historical literature, involving personal criticisms of Hitler, may have been in part, responsible for that tyrant’s almost mythological ascent to the status of historical villainhood; IMO, others have similarly attained ‘realistic demonization’, subsequent to their terrestrial lives, with the effect of elevating their simple, ordinary humanness to a sort of fabricated evilness which at its minimum, was unlikely to have been directly perceived by those who had known and worked with them.

Otherwise, more resource should be provided to build additional libraries, and to replenish existing shelves with literature, which would accomplish: a) removing the sources of dis-information, by supplying new alternatives; b) creating realistic images of the normal balance of the human intellect, in the minds of youth, and college students; c) spur mature attitudes toward diversity, which will eventually guide businesses and individuals toward providing needed goods and services!

  135. Sal says:

I think those repulsed by this use of Holocaust as propaganda should resist the temptation to vilify ALL REPUBLICANS and instead use this as an opportunity to further marginalize the right wing. This could help a lot of moderate republicans realize that they are being courted by extremists.
