One of the most disturbing images from yesterday’s Tea Party rally against health care reform on Capitol Hill was a protester’s gruesome sign showing a pile of dead Holocaust victims. The banner — captured by ThinkProgress here — read: “National Socialist Health Care: Dachau, Germany – 1945.” Another sign said that “Obama takes his orders from the Rothchilds [sic],” a reference to the famous Jewish banking family often implicated in conspiracy theories. Today, Nobel Prize winner and Holoacaust survivor Elie Wiesel strongly condemned the signs, calling them “indecent and disgusting.” From his foundation’s Twitter page:

The National Jewish Democratic Council also criticized the “vile invocations of Nazi and Holocaust rhetoric” and called out GOP leaders who stood in plain view of the signs but ignored them. The Simon Wiesenthal Center demanded that the rally organizers “publicly repudiate the use of Nazi and Holocaust imagery.” Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) made similar comments in a video he posted on YouTube, singling out the rally’s organizer, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN):
I can’t believe that Congresswoman Bachmann would stand where she stood, and see those images, and not have the common decency to say, “I disagree with the use of those images.” I think that she owes the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust an apology. She owes us all an apology. And I’m waiting. We’re all waiting.
Watch it:
When Politico asked House Minority Leader John Boehner’s (R-OH) spokesman for comment on these signs, he simply replied, “Leader Boehner did not see any such sign. Obviously, it would be grossly inappropriate.” Today, Rep. Eric Cantor’s (R-VA) spokesman called the photograph “inappropriate.”
Mr. Wiesel must not be familiar with Crazy Shelly’s work. She has no reason or decency to which one may appeal.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:31 pmwho’s going to hbe the first to call elie wiesel a nazi? my money’s on lardass limpballs
November 6th, 2009 at 6:32 pmI know of conservatives of the Jewish faith. These actions will further splinter and destroy the already decaying GOP.
Is there a group they won’t attack… other than white Christians?
November 6th, 2009 at 6:38 pmschuster was subbing on the ed show and they again — inexplicably — had on tom tancredo.
this insipid shouter kept yelling that they did it to bush too, so, y’know, it’s okay then i guess.
this will most likely be the response; they’ll say it was done to bush so there’s no legitimate criticism of them doing this to obama, pelosi, et al.
they really don’t get how bad this makes them look, just like they really don’t quite get how ‘barack the magic negro’ and limbaugh’s other bigoted comments could be racist.
in their world, that wasn’t racist and this isn’t anti semetic. they really believe this and don’t understand how anyone could genuinely believe otherwise.
the more they shout and jump up and down about everything progressive, the more they expose themselves as the out of touch reactionary bigots 99% of them are.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:38 pmThe kind of fundie Christian who would attend a Bachmann event hates Jews the same as all other groups beside their own. Their only reason for pretending to tolerate Jews is that they think Jews are necessary for Jesus to return.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:39 pmof course, i didn’t mean to say that tancredo and the others are correct in their attempt to create a false equivalency between bush protest signs and this kind of crap.
of course there were people who made dumb and insensitive and outright offensive comments about bush. but they weren’t endorsed by the democratic party…
November 6th, 2009 at 6:41 pmTo that bunch of GOOPers, if you aren’t a white rich member of the Jeebus Club, you ain’t $hit.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:48 pmThis type of rhetoric is disgraceful. Everyone at that event should be ashamed that they did not denounce such blatant hatred. This has gone beyond the bounds of civil political discourse. What is the Republican party turning into and why are they allowing it to happen?
November 6th, 2009 at 6:49 pm.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) thank you!
Elie Wiesel, thank you!
.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:49 pmhow ’bout that, lebowski, when tancredo walked of the set…
i missed what kos said to him, but he demanded an apology and kos ignored him and the next second he was pulling off the mics…
tancredo is extremely annoying… always with the “they did it too” whine…
and later, bill press told ron? to show him the code pink posters that were so bad depicting bush…
cantor should be especially ashamed…
November 6th, 2009 at 6:49 pm.
Q U E S T I O N:
I asked yesterday and yet, the ADL is silent. WHY?
The Simon Wiesenthal Center, thank you!

November 6th, 2009 at 6:51 pmThat Boehner is such a Boehner. First he says he hadn’t heard from anybody in his district in favor of health reform; and, now he says he didn’t see any nasty signs.
Hear no evil
See no evil
Speak no evil
Well, 2 out of three is what I would’ve expected of him.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:52 pmI saw Tancredo walk off the set as well when Markos called his cowardly draft dodging @ss out.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:53 pmThe argument that people did this to Bu$h too! can easily be debunked.
Simply state that Bu$h lied us into a war that has destroyed tens of thousands of American lives and who knows how many other untold lives, and Obama is simply trying to allow Americans to afford healthcare should they get sick.
Sadly, LIEbermann agrees with the signs.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:53 pmThe Republican Party has evolved into an entity that is vile and disgusting.
The image of Dachau, the repeated references to Nazi Germany and Hitler have condensed into a reflection of the Republican Party; corrupt and calloused.
Bachmann is nothing more that willing player.
I hope the present Republican Party’s days are numbered, for decency’s sake.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:54 pmThese are the same folks who boycott a business for a “Happy Holidays” sign because it doesn’t say “Merry Christmas” and yet they find nothing offensive in the signs the demented teabaggers carry. Argh!
November 6th, 2009 at 6:56 pmBachmann is too far gone to disagree with the use of the images.
And isn’t her name Jewish? What is wrong with her?
November 6th, 2009 at 6:56 pmkaty, i missed it too because i skipped over it. but i just rewound the dvr and, after tancredo dissed the vet admin health care, kos said he was a vet and ‘didn’t get a deferment because i was too depressed to support a war i supported in vietnam…’
tancredo demanded an apology, didn’t get it and walked off the set like the watb he is.
like all right wing authoritarians, he can dish it out but can’t take it, especially when it’s true.
and ron christie is also a pitiful little baby as well. watbs the lot of them…
November 6th, 2009 at 6:59 pmI admit I stole this from a post at Huffpo, but this is the queen bee of the teabaggers… these fools are her spawn… God Warrior!!
November 6th, 2009 at 6:59 pmhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3mDLsyn6ns
How much is the GOP helping its image as a party of all Americans by allowing every aberrant behavior imaginable?
November 6th, 2009 at 6:59 pmThey are difficult to get ones head around.
They arent for health insurance reform but consider health insurance reform like death even though its about getting medical care which is about saving life but they dont care about that life after its born or helping with cheaper insurance after they are born.
After a while I think even they give up and just go with with the hypocrisy.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:00 pmFrom my point of view, Bush deserved little bit of crap he was dealt by the opposition. He instituted cages called “free speech zones” and had people arrested and removed for wearing tee shirts. The vile teabaggers are short on facts and long on delusion, but get plenty of MSM exposure.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:03 pmRepresentative Israel is waiting.
I hope he’s not holding his breath waiting on Batsh^t Bachmann, too. She’s the poster girl for the GOP right now, and they don’t apologize for anything that they do, particularly when it regards offensive imagiary or rhetoric. After all, its thier right under the first amendment.
Let a Liberal describe them in images or terms regarding Nazism, and that’s grounds for having said Liberal arrested, shot, or both. The modern GOP: The defenders of Freedom?
I don’t effin think so.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:03 pmThese Repugs made a huge mistake. Don’t they realize how powerful the Jewish Lobby is? I think with that one photograph, the Repugs may have lost the Jewish vote. And the fact they didn’t denounce it right away was ANOTHER huge mistake. On lighter note, Did anyone see Tom Tancredo have a hissy fit and walk off the Ed Shultz show? I worth watching.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:04 pmthanks lebowski… i do remember hearing markos say the he was a vet… i must have tuned out with the talking over each other – which tancredo excels at… such a rude ignorant chump…
that’s funny, to call out the deferment wielding hawks…
November 6th, 2009 at 7:06 pmHe instituted cages called “free speech zones” and had people arrested and removed for wearing tee shirts
Yeh, today they were heckling the police whe they arrested Bachmann protestors in Pelosis office saying they didnt do anything wrong.
Bizarro people world
November 6th, 2009 at 7:07 pmBachmann and common decency should not be used in the same sentence.
And don’t hold your breath Mr. Wiesel for an apology.
Republicans are immoral, unethical scum bags and the depth of their disgusting behavior knows no bounds.

Well, to be honest…
… The “TENT” looks huge when those it covers shrinks.
.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:11 pmSadly at the same time the Israeli government is allowed to get away with the very same tactics against Palestinians that the Nazis used against the Polish Jews.
The distinctions of course are that the Israeli government hasn’t set up an industrial complex to methodically exterminate Palestinians en-masse (or use them for experiments), and that German and Polish Jews didn’t go around hijacking Lufthansa flights or bomb German buses.
But then the European Jews were also the diaspora of region that they had abandoned and/or been forced to abandon.
When handed by selective international agreement, a portion of the land that they had shared with Palestinians and basically given-up due to exigency for some 1500 years ago, they immediately claimed more than that which was given by umoerial largess.
Having been rescued, however belatedly by efforts of the British and the US from a most terrible fate under the Nazis, a politically ambitious element didn’t hesitate to then treat their benefactors as their enemy for their lack of total concession to their ultimate goal which was the re-establishment. more or less of the geo-political reach of the ancient kingdom of Judea, which was justified in significant part as being their inalienable right according to Jehovah’s edict.
I’m not sure if Rothschild was actually as adamant as the early Israeli activists about ‘God-sanctioned land reclamation’ when he appealed to the British for the establishment of a new “Zion” and once the gates were opened for all his influence the Baron may have been overwhelmed by the consequences of his advocacy and unable to temper the results.
Concomitant to this conundrum of recent history is the present day relationship between the Christian and Jewish conservatives in Israel and the US. Both support each other and yet both rail against each other too.
Jews are the Christ-killers, but their continued existence is necessary for the End-Time prophecies, so the American fundamentalist religious base has to tread a fine line between their parochial white European-sourced xenophobia and the history of their sacred texts.
The most orthodox Jews obviously despise western Christians for their own historical and generally cultural parochial reasons. but just as American Christians lie down with the whore of secular Babylon with the intent to purify it by figurative murder or conversion. so the orthodox Jews make use of American WASPS, playing an expedient game of duplicity for their own ultimate ends.
Where the Jewish Democratic Council fits in this toxic relationship I don’t know as yet, but they sound classically liberal.
Are they being joined in their condemnation by the Jewish Defense League or AIPAC?
We’ll have to see–they have to be given some time to consider the if the issue raised is worth their involvement.
It would appear to be a tough call. If AIPAC or the JDL were to speak up in condemnation, they’d be criticizing the base of their favored political ally, the Republicans.

November 6th, 2009 at 7:24 pmThe whole Nazi / holocaust imagery justs shows how weak their arguments are. Comparing healthcare to Dachau is just so far of the map it’s incredible.
Why are the organising not torn a new one for this sort of shit?

November 6th, 2009 at 7:32 pmWhen Christians wake up and realise that Christ was born a Jew and worshiped as a Jew and will want to go to His Father’s Temple and NOT to the house dedicated to Himself, THEN society will be able to move forward.
UKBristolDave01 says:
“Why are the organising not torn a new one for this sort of shit?”
The organizers are feeding it. There’s no one left in the whole damn movement with the sense or sensitivity to realize how disgusting they are. And all criticism, no matter how measured, is simply passed off as an “attack from the far left”. As for anyone on the inside who may think it’s going too far? If they dare to speak they are immediately ejected for betrayal of the “pure message”.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:35 pmWhy are the Republicans so offensive?
November 6th, 2009 at 7:36 pmThe GOP party and reputation are now on serious life support. Now, the shoveling of dirt on the GOP cemetary plot is coming soon in 2010 and 2012. With this major blunder of allowing the wingnuts to leave the barn, run wild, and insult the Jewish organizations with their anti-healthcare reform sign and whines, this adds another nail in the GOP coffin. Also add, that the GOP were a no-show added no support to the climate bill voting which passed on Thursday and now the GOP blew off the Patriot Act bill voting for the teabagging whinefest event!
From TPM:
Several Republican members of Congress yesterday blew off votes on the signature anti-terror legislation of the post 9/11 era to attend Michele Bachmann’s Tea Party rally against health-care reform.
Reps. Steve King of Iowa, Trent Franks of Arizona, Randy Forbes of Virginia, Jim Jordan of Ohio, and Louie Gohmert and Ted Poe of Texas all took time out yesterday for the “Super Bowl of Freedom,” as Bachmann has called it. And all missed votes in the House Judiciary committee on Republican-sponsored amendments to the reauthorization of the Patriot Act — measures that would have toughened the Act, but narrowly failed. Those votes took place, a committee staffer confirmed, between noon and two — the very time when Republican lawmakers were rallying the Tea Party troops on the Capitol steps.
One measure, offered by Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the ranking Republican on the committee, would have extended the “lone wolf” provisions of the Act, which would allow the FBI to surveil or search foreign nationals even if it can’t be shown that the person is an agent of a foreign power. Many believe that had this been in effect before 9/11, the FBI might have caught Zacarias Moussaoui. And Republicans had said that extending the lone wolf provision this time around was crucial to protecting national security. Even some Democrats supported the measure, giving it a good chance of passage. But it failed by a single vote, 15-15. Reps. King and Gohmert were absent.
Another measure, offered by Rep. Dan Lundgren (R-CA), failed by a vote of 11 to 8. Reps. King, Gohmert, Jordan, and Poe were all missing.
Choosing non-sense issue over important issues. Stay classy…

November 6th, 2009 at 7:42 pmUKBristolDave01,
Yes it is disgraceful and shameful. Though, as consolation, it does seem like their numbers shrink as they get louder and more unhinged.
It’s been a very long time since we watched a party die in this country but I don’t see the GOP successfully coming back from the fringe. Future sane “conservatives” may continue to try and use the unhinged masses but I don’t think they’ll ever have control to match what they once had.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:49 pmIt should not take media attention to get Republicans to condemn the use of Nazi symbolism. They should have condemned this early on when the first tea parties were held. Boehner, Cantor, et al, don’t want to see the signs because they think it is a legitimate form of protest. It is not and they know it. Their hatred for Obama far outweighs their good sense of decency.

Oooh! (Seriously!) I really appreciate the above nugget of information, I man now better informed—that makes sense to me.
Just as an orthodox Christian would hew to unconditional tolerance and empathy for other, an orthodox Jew would hew to much the same ideal as I understand the ideals of Judaism (intellectualism an inquiry being one such ideal as I’ve heard often propounded as a major characteristic of the faith–hence all the arguing!)
On the other hand their Orthodox with a capital ‘O’ as it were, which is determined by religious leadership at the time, and it is that which I referred-to pr implied.
There’s the ‘orthodoxy’ of Christianity that might be described as “don’t be a vindictive dick and giver every a break” and then there’s the ‘Orthodoxy’ that ‘God’ hates fags and librulz and scientists.
Every religion has this problem–its subscribers who find and employ the positive and those who find the employ the negative.
Thanks for reminding me of that.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:06 pmSo, what does Sen. Joe LIEberman think about some of his, and his Republican pal’s, teabagging supporters using Holocaust images, implying that healthcare reform, meant to save more American lives, will end up killing people like the Nazis killed Jews in World War Two?
November 6th, 2009 at 8:08 pmBachmann doesn’t know any better, which is not amusing in one who has reached her level of government, and Boehner does but agrees with the anti-Semites, the creep… anything to keep power…
November 6th, 2009 at 8:09 pmUKBristolDave01,
Heh! A real Marxist would be burned at the stake in the present political culture.
But, to be serious, I think we are just catching the truly delusional ones. I don’t foresee them gaining many converts and it’s most likely the last, loud, tantrum of people who can’t cope.

BristolDave, when I arrived in the US from the UK in the early 80’s I laughed at the supposed distinction between the Republicans and the Democrats–it looked to me like a choice between a Tory from Surrey or a Tory from Hampshire, Rover or Jaguar, scones or crumpets?

I stopped ‘following’ when I came to the US–no affordable way to to be a fan for many years.
I also spent a lot of my youth playing in the West Surrey Boy’s League so as the professional and our season’s coincided I never got to go to any ;eague matches as I was training or playing in my own league, so I never get steeped in ‘fandom’.
Hence I love the game itself more than any particular team.

Saying that, the greatest team in the world is Bristol City.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:30 pmI hear that Yulia Lopukhova left her new hubby over internet porn as well
November 6th, 2009 at 9:31 pmKarma is a beyatch
November 6th, 2009 at 9:32 pmHF,
I’m watching Keith make fun of the doltish Republican teabaggers — he doesn’t look eviscerated.
Leave the meth alone, I’m telling ya.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:32 pmThanks for reading olbermannwatch.com!
I scanned over it. Pffft. Not ever again.

Nobody else does.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:33 pm89, Zoo, you’re heterosexually welcome. It’s in honor of my brother Jim. He despised phonies like HF too.

First you say we read it now you say we don’t. Your meth is rough tonight, eh?
November 6th, 2009 at 9:39 pmLet me get this straight — HF needs a blog dedicated to KO to get his rocks off?
Poor dear.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:45 pmLet’s go to olbermannwatch!
Did you say “read” HF?
It’s all YouTube.
Oh wait, there is some writing:
“Greg Gutfeld and Andy Levy were filling in for John Gibson on the radio today. They got in some good shots at the infamous, deplorable one, then kicked it up a notch by bringing in Ann Coulter. It’s perfect Friday fun listening, so listen up, listen-uppers.”
“listen up, listen-uppers”?
You didn’t write that, did you?

Your desperation is showing, again…..
Pulling your strings and pushing your buttons. It’s so easy.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:47 pmListen-upper.
:)
November 6th, 2009 at 9:48 pmSo many loons, so little time.
I notice that Cantor was forced to say something about these outrageous signs. Shamed, I am sure. What have we become? Do you all hate so much you would deny basic health care to your neighbor? I guess that is the case.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:49 pmThe Republicans keep falling back on the excuse that maybe some left wing persons infiltrated their group and wer holding the offensive signs. That’s a possibility, but if you saw a sign like this and thought it was an infiltrator then you would surely confront them! The fact that the people holding the signs were not confronted shows that the politicians did not disagree with the messages on the signs to any degree.
November 6th, 2009 at 10:04 pmfletcher – that’s one of the points that markos made tonight,
November 6th, 2009 at 10:19 pmwhen tancredo tried the “it could’ve been a democrat’s sign” bullshit…
regardless of WHO had the signs, it was the responsibility of the officials to get them removed and admonish the offenders…
Teabaggers seem to be more interested in advertising their own ignorance and narrow minds than any kind of genuine concerns.
November 6th, 2009 at 10:47 pmTeabaggers waging a WAR ON REASON.

Bush was much better at cutting brush than Hitler.
November 6th, 2009 at 11:45 pmLet’s hear more laughable right wing outrage over “Happy Holidays” signs.
November 6th, 2009 at 11:49 pmThe irony in this is that the teabaggers have displayed
November 6th, 2009 at 11:50 pma disregard for the pain of others not dissimilar to that of the Nazis’.
Who’s Armajidian?
November 6th, 2009 at 11:54 pm119, Londra’s wife?
November 7th, 2009 at 12:26 amPoor spelling is your fault not ours. Take responsibility for your mistakes.
November 7th, 2009 at 1:07 amGood a guess as any, Harold Melvin @120.
November 7th, 2009 at 1:43 amMy search came up with nothing at all.
That’s rare.

So you’re agreeing with the right wing president of Iran? Of course you are – bigoted piece of sh!t.

I know, I know, the difference is that “progressives” tell the truth.
Wow, and honest statement wrapped in a sh!tty remark. You told the truth even though you didn’t meant to – you piece of sh!t bigot! Good on you!

Liberal hypocrisy is off the charts, tonight….
Project much hypocrite?
HF says:
You mean like when the liberals were marching around with their Bush/hitler signs? Jeezus Christ, think before you post!
Those signs were anti-semitic and bigoted? Really? LOL!
Follow your own advice patsy, and “think before you post”! Now you just look “retarded” in addition to being bigoted! LOL!
And tell me, how “common” were those signs again? Because teabaggers “all” (you especially) seem to be bigots! ;)
November 7th, 2009 at 2:40 amHF says:
Olbermannwatch gets more hits than olby’s own blog! :)
Not likely! But even if it did, that just shows you that you “lunatic stalkers” all flock together! ;)
HF says:

LOL! Says the “Olbermann” obsessed “desperate” hack of a loser! LOL! You’re so “retarded” it’s almost not fun making fun of you my little patsy d**chebag! lOL!
November 7th, 2009 at 2:42 amHi, Olby Sucks.
November 7th, 2009 at 10:46 amFrom the post;
“When Politico asked House Minority Leader John Boehner’s (R-OH) spokesman for comment on these signs, he simply replied, “Leader Boehner did not see any such sign. Obviously, it would be grossly inappropriate.”“
Well, of course he didn’t see it; he had it pasted on his back like some sort of sandwich sign bumper sticker. Boner isn’t a leader, he’s just an animal that follows polls and wanders into box traps of his own making. The man is a dolt.
I’d like to encourage him in continuing to take his congressional party on their current path. After they’ve gone over the edge, maybe someone with some sense can create a moderate center-right party that is capable of something other than BS and insanity, but I wouldn’t bet on it happening anytime soon.
I wouldn’t expect any serious moves on Boner’s part to stop his party from indulging in the kind of propaganda stunt, combined with morally and ethically damaged thinking, that has characterized a lot of what they’ve been doing since the election of President Obama.
November 7th, 2009 at 11:17 amI am a Jew and found the holocaust image horrendous. Cantor is a Jew and found it inappropriate. Cantor should be ashamed of himself. To my mind he is an apostate.
November 7th, 2009 at 4:51 pmI wonder how much money Mr. Wiesel has made off the Holocaust Industry? I understand it offers great opportunities for anyone willing to yell, cry, and feel sorry for yourself.
