Fox And Friends Muse About ‘Special Screenings’ And ‘Special Debriefings’ For Muslims In The Military

After news broke yesterday that the suspected gunman responsible for the “horrific outburst of violence” at Fort Hood, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, was Muslim, some commentators began assigning “collective responsibility for the actions of one man” to the Muslim community as a whole. On Fox and Friends this morning, Geraldo Rivera warned against casting “a gloomy cloud of suspicion over all the Muslim G.I.s who serve with great honor”:

RIVERA: I think that the great tragedy of this incident is that it will cast a gloomy cloud of suspicion over all the Muslim G.I.s who serve with great honor and who are an amazing assist to the United States in this conflict we’re having with radical Islam. This will, and also, I remember my dad, just very briefly. When we were growing up there would be a notorious crime and my dad used to gather the family. We used to say, like a little prayer, “please God” that it’s not a Puerto Rican. You know because we had, dealing with so many social pressures and prejudices, dealing with all the rest of it, we didn’t want one of these awful examples to cast aspersion and negativity on our group. And this is the same thing with American Muslims now, specifically American Muslim G.I.s.

But, as both Raw Story and Media Matters have noted, later in the segment the hosts of Fox and Friends suggested that “special debriefings” and “special screenings” of Muslim soldiers should be considered. “If I’m going to be sticking in an outpost, I got to know the guy next to me is not going to want to kill me,” said Brian Kilmeade. Gretchen Carlson pondered whether the military had been “exercising political correctness in not approaching” Hasan “as seriously as they would have had he not been a Muslim.” Watch it:

Muslim- and Arab-American organizations have loudly spoken against Hasan’s attack. “We condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms possible and ask that the perpetrators be punished to the full extent of the law,” said a Council on American-Islamic Relations statement. In a statement, the Association of Patriotic Arab Americans in Military urged “the media, government officials and all of our fellow Americans to recognize that the actions of Hasan are those of a deranged gunman, and are in no way representative of the wider Arab American or American Muslim community.”

Update The Hill reports, "A top Republican congressional recruit said on Friday that the shooting at Ft. Hood, Texas yesterday by a solider allegedly sympathetic to suicide bombers shows that the 'enemy is infiltrating our military.'" Spencer Ackerman notes that the candidate -- Allen West -- "was disciplined in the Army in Iraq for actually firing his weapon near a detainee’s head during an interrogation."

  8. EnnuiDivine says:

These gutless chickenhawks should speak with Daniel Inouye. Inouye was a 2nd gen Japanese citizen, who enlisted in the army after Japan attacked America. His heroism during a battle in Italy saved his platoon, cost him an arm, and earned him the highest military decoration our country can bestow. If FoxNews was around back then, they would’ve recommeded “special screenings and debriefings” for him, too.

I’m sure there were Japanese-American soldiers who attacked their fellow troops. They were absolutely in the minority. To whine and scream about how Muslims pose a “special” situation in the American military is disgraceful.

Hasan did not go on a rampage because he was a member of a sleeper cell. He snapped, he lost his mind, and he committed a horrible act of violence.

    ” . . . enemy infiltrating our military”

What utter fear mongering BS; appropriate to the source I imagine. Like the alleged shooter, let’s just call him that, goes to med school, and works for 5 years at Walter Reed and at Ft. Hood dealing with traumatized and damaged GI’s because his real aim is to one day go beserk, snap and blow away a bunch of people.

These a**holes who masquerade as patriots, from the Limbaughs and Becks on down to this unnamed republican congressional recruit really need to be called out in the strongest possible terms. There doesn’t seem to be a bigoted or racially charged possibility that they don’t relish pouring gas on and waiting for someone to throw a match.

I watched Faux News this morning just to see how they would handle the Muslim angle. In the segment following this one, Brian had two psychologists and they did not agree with the Muslim theory. The military psych. said it was more of a “mass murderer”situation . When they both disagreed with Brian, his face fell like a little kid having his candy snatched from him.

They so obviously wanted reinforcement of their theories they ended the segment with “breaking news”.

  21. missmolly says:

Rivera has it right. Kilmeade and Carlson are full of crap.

Kilmeade’s worrying that every Muslim might want to kill him reminds me of decades of white Southern women worrying that every black man wants to rape them.

And Carlson thinking that “political correctness” allows Muslims to slip through various safety nets? Give me a break. If you’re a Muslim in this country (or even if you have a “Muslim” sounding name), you’re watched. And if you do anything remotely suspicious, you’re watched very closely. And if you do anything against the law, the authorities are on you right away. Believe me, if Major Hasan had been doing anything that would arouse any suspicion that he had terrorist leanings, no amount of concern for political correctness would prevent authorities from approaching him and questioning him. The idea that non-Muslims are more closely scrutinized is laughable.

And so many people are reporting that it was Major Hasan the Fort Hood gunman who was the same “Hasan” who made posts in support of suicide bombers. It has not been determined that is so.

No one speculated about any religious motivations. No one suggested he was part of an enemy “infiltration,” or suggested that U.S. troops have been “brainwashed.” Everyone understood that Russell was a deranged lunatic, not an advance scout for a conspiracy to subvert the military internally. If I was Stuck with Brian Kilmeade.
Come on this is to easy. You are with Kilmeade and you have a loaded weapon. I mean the least I would do is make him put on a dress and dance like the little bi**h he is.

Brian Kilmead sitting in a fox hole…what a joke. That chicken hawk coward would wet his pants before he would even go close to any war torn area. Ant the brainless blond…..a narrow minded unshameful bigot.

  99. Leftside Annie says:

I’m sure this has already been said, but frankly, *I’D* feel safer if we screened and debriefed extremist riechwingnuts like Beck, Kilmeade, Limbaugh et. al…

  100. schwartzie says:

The girls at Fox have no business ever commenting about anything military. None of these wusses have ever been on a military reservation.

Amazing isn’t it? The same people who scream that they are being persecuted every time a Reichwing freak snaps and sheds a little light on their extremism now scream for witch hunts whenever someone with a “funny name” snaps.

  106. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Brian Kilmeade: If I’m going to be sticking in an outpost, I got to know the guy next to me is not going to want to kill me.

Don’t worry Brian, you are a coward who will never set foot in a military outpost let alone a military boot

Gretchen Carlson pondered whether the military had been “exercising political correctness in not approaching” Hasan “as seriously as they would have had he not been a Muslim.”

Gee I don’t know Gretchen, you embarrassment to Anoka, Minnesota, perhaps they use the same political correctness on Muslims as they do on Christians? I suppose you would have to do some research on that though you stupid bimbo and researching facts isn’t exactly Freaks & Fiends MO

That’s because these Reichwing freaks think that they’ve been empowered by God to do what they do and if it entails shooting Liberals at Church or killing a doctor who performs abortions, well they are just doing the work of God.

  108. LibertyLover says:

“If I’m going to be sticking in an outpost, I got to know the guy next to me is not going to want to kill me,” said Brian Kilmeade.

As if this man would have the courage to be anywhere near an outpost.

  109. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Do you think Kilmeade or Carlson would have the same concerns had Hasan been a white Christian soldier? I think not.

Have they mentioned these concerns about the white soldiers who’ve committed murdered of their fellow soldiers and some civilians in Ft Collins?

  110. dasm says:

How about special screenings for white blondes at Fox “news”, screening them for sexism & stupidity? (I consider women who promote their sexuality- legs, low-cut tops, etc. in order to get $$$ or ratings” – sexists.) They are blatant sexists, using their sex to promote themselves & demean others.

Racism and bigotry on a morning cable news show. Reminiscent of Father Charles Coughlin, isn’t it?

  114. majii says:

Far right religiologist Rick Scarborough is trying to tie the president to Hassan by saying that because Hassan attended a conference related to military affairs, he was an advisor to the president’s transition team. It is pitiful when a so-called christian stoops to the level of making false accusations and statements meant to smear a sitting president.

Fox and Friends suggested that “special debriefings” and “special screenings” of Muslim soldiers should be considered. “If I’m going to be sticking in an outpost, I got to know the guy next to me is not going to want to kill me,” said Brian Kilmeade.

I heard the attack was a result of the constant bullying Maj. Hasan was subjected to at the hands of his fellow soldiers because he’s Muslim (anyone remember Columbine?).

If Kilmeade is worried about the guy next to him, he should make sure it’s not a skinhead or Neo-Nazi. Or a Republican.

    It’s highly unlikely that

    Francheska Velez, 21
    Pfc. Aaron Thomas Nemelka, 19
    Pfc. Michael Pearson, 21
    Spc. Jason Dean Hunt, 22
    Sgt. Amy Krueger, 22
Russell Seager, age and rank unknown
    and others

would have bullied a US Army Medical Officer, a Major. As I remember the Army, doctors enjoyed excellent status, and the only bullying of an officer would have come from a higher ranking officer.

Did the shooter completely lose any sense of justice and proportion?

  116. pete says:

I might add that the stupid bimbos query if “political correctness” was somehow to blame, when all indications are that this sick freak was constantly harassed for being a Muslim, is downright insulting.

  117. pete says:

No one is suggesting that this act was direct revenge against specific people. Such shootings seldom are. Generally one will find that the shooter feels victimized by society as a whole, or some group, and takes out their rage on the best available targets.

On the other hand, every report I’ve seen has suggested that the shooter had been building to this for a long time.

  118. Virtual Pebble says:

I just love that Republipimp Fux Noise chickenhawk crowd. Always ready with the old ‘guilt by association’ schtick while hypocritically moaning about how everyone else is dissing the constitution, etc.

This rotten business simply ought to be a wake-up call for everyone that it isn’t just being in the combat zone that is racheting up the pressure on our military personnel. The whole deployment-redeployment cycle along with it’s horror stories has to bleed out into the military population as a whole and the military mental health professionals are getting it right in the face day after day; it has to have a long term negative effect.

I would expect that Hasan’s superiors are aware of the effect, and they’ve just been made more aware in the most horrific way possible, short of a suicide bomb. The attitude in the military of sucking it up and moving on, while admirable, isn’t helpful in correcting the problem.

  119. jwmuiyaai says:

There sure is a lot of suffering caused by idiot muslims and idiot xtians. What a compassionate lot they are.

  120. bluesunflower says:

But, as both Raw Story and Media Matters have noted, later in the segment the hosts of Fox and Friends suggested that “special debriefings” and “special screenings” of Muslim soldiers should be considered. “If I’m going to be sticking in an outpost, I got to know the guy next to me is not going to want to kill me,” said Brian Kilmeade.

Then we need to screen the NON-Muslim soldiers, not the Muslim ones. Hasan didn’t go postal on the base because of his religion, he did it because the base was full of a$$holes and he couldn’t take it anymore. It’s classic payback-to-your-bully-torturers.

On Friday, there were other reports that another soldier at Fort Hood keyed his car, causing about $1,000 in damage, and that someone removed a bumper sticker that read “Allah is Love.”

Fox and Friends are pathetic, as is anyone who agrees with them.
