Rep. Mark Kirk begs for Sarah Palin endorsement, but scoffs at Glenn Beck: ‘He’s a very interesting guy.’

Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL), who is seeking the Senate in 2010, has been running to the far right to appease his base and win the Republican primary. Kirk has been actively seeking Sarah Palin’s endorsement, hoping she will burnish his right-wing credentials. However, when ThinkProgress interviewed Kirk yesterday, he seemed tepid about accepting an endorsement from popular hate radio talker Glenn Beck:

TP: How about Sarah Palin? How close are you to getting her endorsement?

KIRK: We sent a memo detailing the race, and she’ll be coming in to Chicago shortly.

TP: How about Glenn Beck, if he offered you his endorsement, would you accept that?

KIRK: Uhh, he’s a very interesting guy. I don’t think he’s endorsing any candidate though.

TP: He endorsed Hoffman, you don’t want him to endorse you?

KIRK: So, it’s been nice seeing you.

Watch it:

Earlier this year, Kirk suggested shooting Gov. Pat Quinn (D-IL) because of higher taxes. After voting in support for clean energy legislation, Kirk was hounded by angry tea party protesters. Kirk then bowed to pressure, withdrawing his support for cap and trade. Despite Kirk’s lurch to the right, apparently vitriolic talkers like Beck are a bridge too far.

But seriously, if he doesn’t get Rush’s endorsement then he’s done for.

Ah, yes — gun violence. Always at the top of the hit parade for the rabid right. This kind of talk may well get Kirk the GOP nod.

But taking the whacko line will just make it easier for any Democrat to clean Kirk’s clock in the general.

  3. Dave N says:

It’s going to be very entertaining to watch these GOP moderates trying to seduce Caribou Barbie and that ilk into an endorsement by “burnishing their conservative credentials”.

Congressional prostitution at its best. “Look at me!! Anti-abortion!! Drill, baby, drill!! Socialism!! Dirty liberals!! So do I have your endorsement?”

Give him time – he’ll come around. Beckerhead is, after all, one of the leaders of the republican party.

Rep. Kirk will wish he hadn’t ask for Palin’s support it might end up just like Hoffman. Sarah is comedy relief and for men she is looked at as a sex object with no brains. Alaska saw when they needed a Govenor Sarah resigned.

  11. Xisithrus says:

Kirk accepted $1000 from Tony Rezko,[36][37] who has been convicted on federal charges of attempted extortion, money laundering, and fraud.[38]

Mark Kirk received a donation from Congressman Bob Ney, who pled guilty to bribery. [39] Kirk was called upon to return the tainted money. [40] Kirk refunded the Ney contribution in the 2nd quarter of 2006.[citation needed]

FEC records show Kirk received financial support from Americans for a Republican Majority, a PAC formed by Tom DeLay.[41]

    .

It says a lot when one waits for the endorsement of a V.P. running mate that helped loose the election of a decorated War Vet running for President.

It says even more when one waits for an endorsement of a State Governor who could NOT finish her term as Governor due to too much paparazzi coverage.

But it says tons when one waits for the endorsement of a person who slandered the POTUS on National T.V. in a blatant attempt to draw coverage from her own involvement in a Separatist organization that seeks to undermine the Government of the USA.

    .

  15. paleolib says:

Recognizing that Beck’s endorsement didn’t exactly help Hoffman at least makes Kirk a little bit brighter than the idiots at Red State and other winger blogs who think losing a seat that went Republican for over a century is a good thing. Then again, the Snowbilly make the same endorsement and Kirk can’t figure out that she is as toxic to independent voters as Beck.

    “hiking the Appalachian Trail.”

Not to pick a fight, but being a distance hiker myself, it takes a good measure of fortitude and commitment to accomplish such a feat.

Something the average tenderfooted politician highly unlikely to attempt, much less complete.

The Campaign Trail is the only footpath they know, and they sit on their asses most of the time to travel that.

    ;)

Early last month, Caldwell’s office issued subpoenas for records from ACORN’s New Orleans office, where the organization — now moving its national headquarters to Washington — has long been based.

Today’s search is an outgrowth of those subpoenas, which stemmed from an investigation by Caldwell’s office into the embezellement of ACORN funds by Dale Rathke, a brother of the organization’s founder, Wade Rathke, Herring said.

Oops. Nothing to do with Beck.

  24. EnnuiDivine says:

Unless they really wise up and realize ideological purity will ensure a permanent Democratic majority…

The teabaggers/Beck/Palin/Limbaugh would NEVER endorse Kirk. He’s pro-choice and voted for ACES, hate-crimes legislation, against the Federal Marriage Amendment, in favour of gun control legislation, voted to raise minimum wage…

In other words, he’s the kind of Republican who could win statewide election in a state like Illinois. And the kind of Republican that the teabaggers/Beck/Palin/Limbaugh seek to destroy. Who knows, maybe a “True Conservative” will enter the race.

I’m talking to you, Alan Keyes.

  25. missmolly says:

Republicans are now between a rock and a hard place. They have to do two things to get elected — win the GOP primary and win the general election. And it’s difficult to use the same persona to do both, unless you live in a bright red district (or state, if you’re running for governor or senator).

Charlie Crist is finding out that he can’t win the GOP primary in Florida by being a moderate. But he’s going to have a bigger problem winning the general by being a Palin/Bachmann type loon.

Kirk can burnish his wingnut credentials all he wants, but after winning the primary he’ll have to spin away from them so fast he’s going to get whiplash, if he wants any chance of winning the general election.

It’s fairly common for the party NOT in the White House to make gains in both houses of Congress at the midterms. Especially if one party controls both the WH and Congress. For this reason, I was expecting the GOP to make some modest gains. But just observing the way the Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot, I’m starting to wonder if they will lose even more seats in 2010.

  28. 5th Estate says:

I can see some sense in Kirk’s preferences.

Beck is a Teabagger (or “Guy-Fawker” as Colbert coined it las night) with no practical political clout.

Palin on the other hand has some functional allies in the Republican establishment.

However, Palin is obviously an undeclared Teabagger, consistent with her modus-operandi of sheer self-serving opportunism and her revulsion of doing any actual original work.
Of course Kirk’s biggest problem is that hwilst the GOP/RNC has the organizational wherewithal to support a candidate, the Teabaggers have become the most active GOP base upon which votes will depend, but they lack coherence and are an unreasonably demanding lot who hold up noisy irrationality as power–their platform and philosophy is mindless anti-establishment interference.

Kirk’s choice is to have run with the present GOP establishment ( of which Palin is presently considered a member) or run with the Teabaggers/Guy Fawkers who are spoiled ungrateful dependents who refuse to share or behave or appreciate the toys they’ve been given.

There’s nothing new or special about any of this. Candidates always run towards their partisan base during midterm and off-year elections, and toward the middle on presidential election years. Hence we shouldn’t be surprised to see a bunch of Republicans acting like whacko-wing-nuts over the next 12 months. Don’t be surprised to see liberal Democrats lurching to the left, too. It will be very difficult to get anything done in Washington when primary season starts up in a couple of months.

  39. 5th Estate says:

P.D. says: Why would anyone want Sarah Palin to endose them? Didn’t this idiot learn anything from the whole NY23 fiasco?

Learn anything from a fiasco? Surely you jest? :D

Dems are horribly slow learners, but GOPers actively oppose learning anything!

  40. P.D. says:

5th@39, LOL! Very true. But at least Dems have learning cabability. Repugs believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old and Global Warming is just God’s way of giving you a big hug!

  41. pags2 says:

If Kirk is endorsed by Palin, he may as well write off most of Cook County and Chicago. The city is heavily Dem and the suburbs are mostly independents who tend to vote Dem. Kirk will have to carry the rest of the state by a large margin or a lot of Dems will have to stay home on election day. Otherwise, Quinn seems to be doing a good job and Blago is a distant memory. It will be difficult for Republicans to run against Blago. Off year elections are usually low voter turn out here in Illinois but there is a hotly contested election for the County Board which may bring out a lot of Dems in the primary and the general election. That would make it a close election.

I got a three-season tent, -15 sleeping coffin, big ass survival knife, 550 cord, titanium cooking gear, firelighter, water purification tablets, MRR’s, military medical kit et cetera et cetera.
